RUNNING A CHURCH LIKE A BUSINESS

Page 3: The Human Resource in an Evangelical Volunteer Organization

BEGIN WITH THE SPIRIT• Pick any three of those passages. Imagine you are a CEO of

a company. For each of your three passages, list one truth… one bit of advice or piece of encouragement… inspired from that passage, that you might you be able to impart to the paid employees of your company’s leadership team.

• Go through those three passages a second time. Imagine you are a leader in the church. For each of those three passages, list one truth… one bit of advice or piece of encouragement… inspired from that passage, that you might be able to impart to the volunteers who work in your congregation.

• Take some time to list as many reasons as you can think of that people don’t volunteer at your church.

“MUGGERS” (WORSHIP VISITOR FOLLOWUP)

Why is this needed? Face-to-face worship visitor follow up has been proven statistically to make an enormous difference in leading visitors to make a repeat visit. We want our visitors to have multiple chances to hear the Gospel. Plus, it demonstrates the love the Gospel creates within us.

Page 22: The Human Resource in an Evangelical Volunteer Organization

“MUGGERS” (WORSHIP VISITOR FOLLOWUP)

What does this require? The Connection Cards from a Sunday are used to identify first time visitors. A package is assembled that includes a mug with our church name on it as well as some information about our church. All the “mugger” is required to do is stop by the home of that first-time visitor, ring the bell, and if someone answers say, “Hi, I’m _______ from Beautiful Savior. We just wanted to thank you for joining us this past Sunday. Here’s a small gift and some information. I hope to see you again soon.” If no one is home, you leave a hand written “Sorry I missed you” message on the front porch along with the gift package. This visit should be made by the Wednesday after the prospect visited. Thus, this is not a long visit. We want you to keep the visit very brief — 60 seconds at the doorstep.

“MUGGERS” (WORSHIP VISITOR FOLLOWUP)

How much time is involved? We want six muggers who would serve on a rotating basis. Typically, you can pick up the packages, drop them off, and be back home within an hour. If we have no first-time visitors, your “turn” would slide to the following week.

“MUGGERS” (WORSHIP VISITOR FOLLOWUP)

Who can serve? Anyone who can drive. You simply drive to church, pick up the gift package form the office, and drop it off at the visitor’s home

Page 25: The Human Resource in an Evangelical Volunteer Organization

“MUGGERS” (WORSHIP VISITOR FOLLOWUP)

How do you define “a win”? You win when you show that Beautiful Savior values our visitors by dropping off a care package within 48 hours of the guest visiting us.

TIME AND TALENT SURVEYSa. Be cautious with “SPIRITUAL GIFT” inventories. Is

that really what they are?b. Ask for offerings of talents and time on an

ongoing basis, as part of BIBLE INFORMATION CLASS.

c. Ask for offerings of talents and time on an annual basis, as part of your MINISTRY PLAN presentation.

Show the money or show the manpower.

Page 27: The Human Resource in an Evangelical Volunteer Organization

OFFER JOB TRAINING ON A REGULAR BASISa. Hold bi-annual SERVANT FAIRS where you provide two

weeks of intensive training in a variety of areas.b. A simple three-step method:

You watch, I SERVE. You serve, I WATCH. We both SERVE.

c. For jobs that are spiritually, such as church council or elders, have a continuing CURRICULUM as part of your Bible study program.

d. Fold job training into your SMALL GROUPS if you have them.
