ed Bud Naifeh and reported that Hugh Griffith had improved enough to go to rehab. Kirby Warnock led the Pledge of Allegiance and “The Star Spangled Banner.” Fred

His father is a PDG of Dist. 7530 of northern West Virginia.

PE Cleve Clinton gave an informative presentation on the RCPC Foundation and on how grants are made. Sgt-at-Arms Patsy Watson followed up by saying that she would be reminding members when it was their turn to make their voluntary contribution. She also explained that when each memberʼs con-tributions reached $750, he or she would be-come a Frank Monroe Fellow. For the first $750 a bronze medallion is awarded; for the second, the medallion is silver, and for the third a gold medallion is awarded.

Howard Parker reminded ever-yone that they were members of the Joys and Concerns Committee, and to

speaker today, DG Nominee, Bill Dendy. He said the story began in 1978 when he was a freshman in

college and was recruited to build a Baptist church in Nicara-gua. Last year, he and Kathy went to Nicaragua for their tenth wedding anniversary. After re-viewing the history of pirates raiding Nicaragua and the inter-vention of William Walker in a civil war in Nica-ragua, he returned to his own history in 1978. When he was working on construction, it was part of his job to walk to the hardware store for supplies. As he past the Catholic church, there were boys in one of the towers who said they were revolutionaries. He slipped out of work to interview the boys, and he noticed they had homemade hand grenades. That was the day that the military came to remove the boys from the tower. At a lull in the shooting, he quickly left and went back to his job. Soon after that, he saw that wounded were being carried to the hospital. The incident became a seminal moment in the Nicaraguan revolution.

When he was there last year, he atten-ded a Rotary meeting. They did not have pro-grams, but work on service projects at their meetings. They had already brought several water wells to rural parts of the country. They also told them about one project which was to build kitchens for schools. During Spring Break of 2013, he is taking a group of Interac-ters and Rotaracters to Nicaragua to get them involved in service. He said they will be ta-king wheelchairs and working on several pro-jects. He invited RCPC to join them as well.

THOUGHTS ON . . .

I believe that God has planted in every human heart the desire to live in freedom. And even when that desire is crushed by tyranny for decades, it will rise again. The case for trade is not just mone-tary, but moral. Economic freedom creates habits of liberty. And habits of liberty create expectations of democracy.America has never been an empire. We may be the only great power in history that had the chance, and refused – preferring greatness to power and justice to glory. The peaceful transfer of authority is rare in history, yet common in our country. With a simple oath, we affirm old traditions and make new beginnings.

VP Cleve Clinton brought us interesting details about our own RCPC Foundation last week. The Fund is administered by the Communities Foundation of Texas, under the direction of the RCPC Foundation Board. That Board meets quarterly, and is made up of Chair Ed Fjordbak. PP Phillip Bankhead, Margaret Collins, PP Doug Means, PP Rick Amsberry, PP Linda Tunnell, Ruth Alhilali, and Ex-Officio Mem-bers President Fred Brown and VP Cleve Clinton.

As of July 31, the RCPC Fund held $1,147,162.76. The amount to be distributed is determined to be 5% of the fund average for the last sixteen quarters, which was calculated to be $$19,685 for this quarter.

Of that sum, $9, 560 will go to RCPC programs,

RCPC FOUNDATION

including Vet to Vet and New Generations Projects, such as Mentoring, Interact, RYLA, and Ethics. The additional $10,125 will go to community grants.

The next meeting will be in November and is open to all RCPC members.

Donations are welcome at any time! Check the box in the left corner below to know if your voluntary donation of $50 or more is due.

Matthew Connor Heitkamp has ARRIVED! 7 lbs, 10 oz.

One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her son into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?" The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. "I can't, dear," she said. "I have to sleep in Daddy's room."  A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice, "The big sissy."
