Hororata Swimming Sports… The Hororata Swimming Sports will be held at the Hororata Community Pool on Thursday 13 (PP 14) March 2014. The programme will be divided into two sections i.e., Competition: 10:30am – 11:45pm; Recreation (Beginners): 12.15pm – 2.00pm. This year we will once again combine with Greendale School for both sections of the sports. A swimming programme, including rules, race times etc is available under
the Parent section of the Links & Resources space on the school’s website:
Hororata Harriers… The Hororata Harriers have been running now since the beginning of the year, with a focus on preparing children for the
upcoming local and regional multisport events.
Our focus now is on the upcoming Canterbury Triathlon, McDonalds Duathlon and City 2 Surf fun run/walk. We aim to have families and kids entered in both the McDonalds and City to Surf events and once again will be coordinating entries on behalf of families through the school… entry
information has been attached to this newsletter.
Maths Buddy… In 2013 we trialed an online resource called Maths Buddy. Maths Buddy gives students the opportunity to watch, listen and re-do maths lessons again, to stop and rewind the teacher when needed. It allows students to learn from an excellent teacher with the powerful help of
sight and sound.
The trial proved Maths Buddy to be an excellent mathematical teaching tool and as a result we have enrolled all students and families in the programme. This allows your child access to the online resource at school or at home. All students have been given individual passwords to Maths Buddy and have free access to activities set by teachers and to the speed
skills tasks available… this is not a game!
Please note that the school has invested a lot of time and money in this programme to provide you and your family access to this unique learning tool. The success of this programme is largely dependent on home and school working together to get the most from the resource. If you require any support gaining access to the programme, I will be running a short
presentation at the upcoming PTA meeting.
We recommend that all parents take the time to explore the site, and
familiarise yourself with the student/tutorial. www.mathsbuddy.co.nz
Haere mai... I would like farewell Lily and Alakai Carrothers (Piwakawaka), who leave our school and move to Rolleston. Thank you and your family
for the contribution you have made to our school during your time with us.
Finally, schools are not about bricks and mortar, library books, laptops and sandpit toys. Schools are about the people. The people of Hororata are our school’s greatest asset. Unfortunately, it is often the same small group of people doing the volunteer work, responding to surveys, or attending
meetings… Parents, teachers and kids are missing out!
Here are some ways you can help our school.
Join the team… The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) provides outstanding support for the children, teachers and families of Hororata Primary School. Our school relies heavily upon the P.T.A to supplement the school’s annual funding entitlement. Being a part of PTA not only contributes to our school, but also helps to connect you with other parents
and community members.
Share your time and your talents… Teachers often need volunteers to help with small group activities, reading to children or working with children during writing or at the computer. Do you have the time to work alongside
our teachers to make a difference in the classroom?
Get out your green thumb… Have you noticed that the school grounds could use some work? Talk to the principal about supplementing the great work undertaken by our grounds-person around the school. A little digging
here and a little weeding there will make a big difference everywhere!
Get on board … Attend a Board meeting and get an insight into how things work around here. Learn more about the challenges and rewards
associated with being on the Board of Trustees.
Thanks for supporting our school

Hi everyone
We are starting our maths topic on number this week. Each group is learning the number sequences in the following ranges: 1 to 10, 1 to 20 or 1 to 100. They need to be able to count from any number in that range, both forwards and backwards. They also are learning to say the number that comes before and after any number, and sequence random numbers (both forwards and backwards). I will write the number range in their notebooks – but I’m sure you will know which numbers they are learning. They are also learning to write the numerals correctly and clearly – many will need lots of practise with this. The school has purchased a handy maths website – www.mathsbuddy.co.nz -Your child is logged on and can access a task booked by myself. have given the children two weeks to complete the task to enable everyone plenty of time to do so. I have pasted your child’s login name and password into their notebook. Good luck and have fun!
Regards Julia
Kea (Miss Stewart)
Hello all,
Week 6 is upon us and we have started a new maths topic on place value and number naming. Maths buddy tasks have been set up to support in class learning for all students. Well done to all those who have been on Maths Buddy already and have been practising their maths skills.
A great website to look up for teaching children essential ICT skills is BBC dance mat typing. It is an online programme to support the learning of touch typing. It teaches children the basics of touch typing rewarding each completed level with a different performance from some interesting animals!
Do not forget library day is Monday and Spelling notebooks are needed daily. Some children are forgetting this and might need a reminder to pack them into their bags.
All the goals that were discussed in parent teacher meetings can be found in your child’s notebook for you to refer to.
If you have not received any e-mails from me this term please send me a message at [email protected] I look forward to seeing many of you at the swimming sports on Thursday.
Thanks Megan
Tui (Mrs Foster)
Hello Everyone
First of all I would like to congratulate all the children in Tui for the wonderful performance they put on for Assembly last week. I realise that they didn’t have a lot of time to practice but they pulled it off and a it was a fantastic item, so well done Tui.
In class this week we have started writing descriptions – the students are finding this challenging however some fantastic descriptions are being written. In the afternoon the children are busy, busy, busy learning about the weather; this is their science unit for the term and some of next. Spelling and reading are coming home with the children – keep up the great work.
