In 2012 Sherine knew she had to make some radical changes in her life. This realisation led her to CALAT where she has been studying ever since.

Growing up in Jamaica, Sherine did not receive the kind of education we all deserve and it was not until she had two daughters of school age that her own education became a stumbling block to helping theirs.

Since enrolling with CALAT she has passed English and Maths Entry levels 1 and 2 and is currently studying for English Entry level 3.

Studying with CALAT has really improved my confidence and has made me push myself to the next level and continue improving. The staff are brilliant and have never let me give up when I have a rough day, I have made lots of friends with the other learners, we are like a little family and we all enjoying learning together. I am now able to help my daughters with their Maths and English homework and filling out forms and things is not scary anymore which gives me real joy. For that I could not recommend CALAT enough.

Next I want to go on to study more advanced courses so I can find a good job in Health and Social Care. I have to keep pushing myself so I can learn more and so my daughters can see that if you want to achieve a goal then you must work hard.

CALAT Family Learning offers a diverse and rich programme of Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy courses and workshops, sometimes referred to as Skills for Families. Adults are able to improve their own skills, whilst learning how to support their own child’s learning.

Many programmes offer the chance to work towards a nationally recognised qualification. The programmes are of a high quality and are run in partnership with schools, libraries, children’s centres, family & community centres. These programmes are largely funded through Learning Skills Council funding and are free for eligible parents and their families.

Skills for Life is the key Government strategy to improve the literacy, language and numeracy skills of adults and CALAT Family Learning has a key role to play in both work with parents/carers through skills for life and in supporting the Early Years Foundation Stage, Every Child Matters, Healthy Schools strategy, the Primary Strategy and Social Inclusion strategies.

CALAT Family Learning also offers a successful programme of short family courses (ranging from one-off workshops to a few weeks), where mums, dads, grandparents and carers can enjoy learning together with their child. Such as:

• Storytelling

Having worked in a Doctors surgery and as an Estate agent I would do anything I could to avoid working with computers. I was too embarrassed to admit to people that I had dyslexia and felt stupid because I couldn’t do even the most simple thing on a PC.

After CALAT was recommended to me I finally found the courage to sign up and I am so glad I did, it really has changed my life.

I had a bit of a wobble on my first course and nearly gave it all up but the teachers were so engaged with me as a person as opposed to just a pupil, they saw my needs without me having to express them and made me, for the first time, feel comfortable about my dyslexia which gave me the courage to truly open up and learn. I wanted to do it for my teachers as well as myself. Lesley, Maxine, Judy and Elaine were absolutely amazing.

We all worked as a team in the classes, we all had our strengths and helped each other out with the things that we didn’t understand, it was a real family unit.

After so many years of denial I realised that no matter how tough it was, and believe me it was really tough, I had to face up to my learning problems and deal with them. I used to think it was easier to fail… now I think you have to try your hardest even if it takes you out of your comfort zone.

I am so proud of how far I have come. You don’t have to write yourself off. There are places, like CALAT, where you go and learn and grow in an amazing environment and I couldn’t praise them more highly.

Kim is now applying for jobs as a receptionist or administrator and also in the Child care sector.

Yadigar came to the UK from Turkey 10 years ago to work as an au-pair. After marrying and having two children she went to university to study for an arts degree and it was here that she realised she wanted to become a teacher. To do this Yadigar was advised that she would need to improve her English and maths which is when she first came to CALAT and enrolled on an ESOL course. She studied hard to improve her English and achieved her Level 1 .

Having taken all the right steps to achieving her final goal it was necessary for her to gain a Level 2 qualification in English and maths and immediately she knew where she would go to get what she needed.

CALAT have been so helpful and understanding. They could see what I was capable of achieving where I could not and welcomed me on to the courses with open arms. I have also been working as a volunteer for the Learning Support department to get experience and develop more skills while I finish my teacher training which has been such a rewarding thing to do.

Fouzia arrived in the UK in 2009, having fled the war in Somalia. Although she had no opportunity for formal education, when her children started school Fouzia decided to enrol in an ESOL class.

My life is safe and better here. I like my class. My teacher is good and the students are good. I like speaking and writing. In Somalia, no school. Here I’m happy: I can read and write my name, address and postcode and I like speaking English outside.

Fouzia is short-sighted and is supported in class by Josephine, her LSA.

Fouzia is an absolute pleasure to support. She makes my job easy because she’s always extremely keen to learn and is equally determined to succeed. Her grasp of English has gone from strength to strength. We often enjoy lengthy conversations together in English about a range of topics and she always has a funny story or two to share with me, which makes me smile. Fouzia puts her all into her classwork which has paid off as she rapidly continues to advance to the next level. I am proud of the progress she has made in such a short space of time and I’m confident she’ll do even better next term.

The classes have boosted Fouzia’s confidence and independence. She is now able to talk to the teachers at school and to take her children to the GP without her husband.

Learning a language with CALAT opens up a world of opportunity.

Whether you are a complete beginner, a bit rusty or want to be fluent for business or pleasure, CALAT offers courses for all levels.

Speaking another language will open up your world and extend your horizons as well as enhancing your job prospects.

We run beginners’ courses in French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish with courses at higher levels in all of these except Japanese.

We have a self-assessment form available on-line which will give you an idea which level of course suits you best. For a more detailed pre-course assessment email the Languages department at [email protected] or call 020 8726 7777, extension 88120 or extension 50154. This is particularly important if you are new to learning a language with CALAT but are not a complete beginner.

ABC Awards*

In years 1 to 3 our French, German, Italian and Spanish courses are accredited by ABC Awards.

There are no formal written exams. You will work towards the Entry Level 2 or Entry Level 3 Award or Level 1 Award in Speaking & Listening and Reading & Writing skills in your chosen language as appropriate.

Accreditation involves the compilation of a small portfolio of assignments as part of normal classroom activities and assessments undertaken by your teacher, which are then moderated by ABC. These may include a short recorded speaking assessment.

All the costs of registration, assessment and certification are included in the course fee. It is expected that all students will take part in the accreditation process as a natural component of the class.

* Accreditation information is correct at today’s date but may be subject to changes due to alterations in our funding allocation.

I researched loads of potential learning venues for Spanish courses but CALAT was far and away the best choice. My tutor was excellent and I felt the course progression was really well measured with real results from the beginning.

I felt able to make mistakes knowing that if I did I would be corrected in a sensitive and diplomatic way which really made me confident in my learning.

When I first started learning Portuguese at home on my own in 2012 I found it really difficult. It was hard as many apps or websites only cater for Brazilian Portuguese and I wanted to learn European, it was also hard without a teacher there to explain things to you and other learners to practise with.

I searched around London for classes and was so delighted to find CALAT, I’ve now been studying Portuguese once a week at CALAT for almost 3 years and I absolutely love the support from my tutor as well as the comradery and support from my classmates.

It’s not just my skills that have grown, it’s my confidence too. When I was learning by myself I would be too scared to attempt to try and communicate with Portuguese speakers in case I made a mistake or wasn’t understood. My CALAT tutor has given me the confidence to always try and have a go, and it’s improved my fluency so much. It’s been really important to me to be able to have the confidence to speak and communicate in Portuguese as my husband’s family speak very little English. Being able to communicate with them has been a dream come true and I still love learning and progressing.

In June 2016 I sat my Portuguese GCSE exam and achieved an overall grade A which I am so proud of! In August of the same year, my husband and I got married in Portugal and not only was I able to communicate to the florist, the venue and the photographer in advance of the day to help organise everything, I also managed to get through the entire wedding ceremony in Portuguese!

Alex Beaufort-Cotter French tutor

At CALAT we love to celebrate the success of our learners but we do not always do the same for our brilliant tutors, until now. Alex Beaufort Cotter is one such tutor.

Alex came to the UK from France in 1993 to work as an au-pair. Fast forward to 2009 and she joined CALAT to teach French at all levels.

Continuing her own studies, in 2015 Alex began a Diploma in Education and Training at Croydon College and, out of a class of twenty, was amazed to be nominated for and win the Outstanding Professional Teaching Award for all her hard work over the course of her studies.

Of winning the award Alex said

I was really surprised as I was not expecting it…I thought there were far better candidates. Winning the award has really boosted my confidence and proved to me that I am good at what I do and know I couldn’t have done it without all the amazing students I have taught and got to know over the years. CALAT is such a good place to work, the Clocktower is an amazing building in a great location and the other staff and students make it a fun place to be. I honestly think everyone who works at CALAT does an amazing job and they all deserve awards.

• If you are 19-23 and do have a full Level 3 qualification you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan to fund the cost of certain courses.

• If you are aged 24 years or over you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan to fund the costs of certain courses.

Loans are funded from the Student Loan Company and are not means tested or subject to credit checks. The loan is available irrespective of the learner’s current employment status. The application form is simple and can be done online. For more information go to: https://www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan.

The Advanced Learning Loans are for anyone who:• is resident in the UK

• has not previously had a loan to do the same type and level of qualification.

The loan amount you will need to borrow will be for the cost of delivering the course in line with government guidance related to each individual qualification. Therefore different qualifications at Level 3 may cost differing amounts. CALAT courses that are affected include: Childcare, Health & Social Care and Schools Workforce.

If your course is funded through a loan and you withdraw before the completion of the course, CALAT reserves the right to charge you for the difference between the full fee and the payment that has been received against the loan.

Please be aware that the fees we charge for the courses which are eligible for the Advanced Learning Loans are in line with the funding rate. However, other providers may offer different options to fund a similar course.

Other help to pay for your courseIf you are on a low income paying the full fee and on a course leading to a qualification, you may be eligible to apply for the Discretionary Learner Support Fund (Access Fund). You will be required to enrol on the course and pay the full fee before applying for financial help from the Access Fund and you can only apply on-line. All submitted applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and there are no guarantees that the funds will be granted.

The fund could help pay towards the cost of course tuition fees, exam fees, course materials and childcare. Please note that the Discretionary Learner Support Fund has a limited pot of money and so we cannot guarantee funding for more than two termly courses or for any more than two children (childcare access fund). A new application will need to be submitted for courses that are one term but may have connected modules or levels over the subsequent terms.

Adults with learning difficulties or disabilities (ALDD) may be eligible to apply for support with travel costs.

If your application is successful you will receive a refund for the access fund amount. If you paid the full fee you will receive the refunded amount as soon as the application has been granted. If you are paying by standing order your refund will be granted upon completion of the course.
