This is the very first edition ofThe Hinge which we begin anew era, it is the follow-on magazine to the Courier which Wolfgang Rösel (D) & DieterStraka, (A) Vice-President 41INTERNATIONAL, edited so successfully for many years.Thetitle comes from “May the Hin-ges of Friendship never rust”The name is not new, it hadbeen used for also many yearsby GB as title for their Ex-tablers’ magazine. It is our target to revive thisname and make this magazineinteresting and amusing so thatit will appeal to all of us. It will be published 4 times a year.We shall need the help from all mem-ber nations who should send humo-rous reports and of course pictures ( please in .jpeg format).Do not forgetto tell me who are on the pictures sothat we can give the picture a title.I want to try to issue the next magazinewith a report from each of the 19 mem-ber nations and Associates even if it isonly a short notice. The closing date forthe next edition is on 30th August.

I am Bob Parton and have become thenew editor of this magazine, joining RTin 1964 in Peterborough (GB) and aman active member of the Karlsruhe 41Club no. 46 in Germany.

The two of us were quite a showand lots of people went “oho, you should go in for competition, you women with a special vision”,but all we wanted was the fun,as to ambition, there was none.

One really jolly group of maskshad set themselves quite special tasks,as footballs they blew themselves up to advertise the great world cup, those Germans were in super formand won, failure is not their norm.!

As Sister Act the Swiss appeared, sexy they looked and slightly weird‘cause nuns use to be well-behaved,not that pushing and decently shaved.

There were, of course, still many others, originally dressed sisters and brothers,

Welcome in, Mr. President! Uwe comes!

It is an honourable obligation tothank the outgoing president - and,Big John, in your case that is veryeasy because you have done a ter-rifically good job: you went to see alot of member associations, al-though you had to fly from SouthAfrica; during the official meetingsyou were a brilliant leader andthere was always a good joke to re-lieve the stress. Thank you for yourengagement, enjoy your past presi-dent year and please don’t stopsupporting us. It is a great honourfor me to be the fourth GermanOld-Tabler to become 41 INTER-NATIONAL President and I thankvery much the members of OldTablers Germany and of the recentGerman Boards who trusted andsupported me in a fantastic way. Ihope and I am sure that it will con-tinue. I am grateful that my threepredecessors Ernst Ulrich Walter,Einhart Melzer and Wolfgang Roe-sel are here today, thank you all forcoming to this AGM I do not wantto give you a long speech, so hereare my essentials: FFiirrssttllyyI always was and I am still con-vinced that we are the best club ofelder men in the world because welive the spirit of Round Table - andthat gives us this unique feeling offellowship. Let us keep it this way! SSeeccoonnddllyyOf course we shall try to enlargeour association but it is not neces-sary to rush. Let us never forgetthat quality means more thanquantity. Our extension officerMichael Dalbo Pedersen (DK) hasstarted to contact non membercountries with few 41 Clubs. Ithink we have to do one step moreand get in touch with countrieswhere Round Table only, but noth-ing else, is. We should visit theRound Table AGMs in these coun-tries and inform the young Tablersthat “Table” life does continue withus after the age of 40.

TThhiirrddllyy

To accomplish these tasks you needmoney and that is why the budget of41 INTERNATIONAL should be in-creased. Our board proposed a modi-fication of the rules to make it easierfor the following boards to adapt thefees. Please support this proposaland try not to start a new criticalbasic discussion. Our associationneeds time to work on the compro-mises found some years ago. A newfundamental debate could be dan-gerous and may lead to a solutionmost of us will not appreciate. Following the coming football worldchampionship:“Let us keep the balllow”.FFoouurrtthhllyyYAP is going very successfully, butthere are difficulties with the newFAMEX programme. We have tocure these “growing pains” becauseFAMEX might become a most impor-tant feature for more internationalcontacts between 41ers. AAnndd LLaassttllyyAll the 41ers in the different coun-tries are highly qualified and ofcourse retain their knowledge evenwhen they retire. We owe the worldto use this advantage and to helpmore than we do at the moment.Even if it is not possible for 41 Inter-national to be a service club, thereshould be many ways to mobilize ourexperiences and abilities for actualhelp and a better future. Last year John Hudson already

mentioned this purpose in Cyprusand we should take it to heart. Per-haps an institution like the “AktiveHilfe “ (translated means “activehelp”) Old Tablers founded in Ger-many, can be an example for otherassociations.I am convinced that more engage-ment will weld us closer togetherand will make our association moreattractive even for outgoing RoundTablers because this would showthat Club 41 is, not only, a specialkind of party club (as some (dis-Ed.) engaged Round Tablers maythink). Dear friends, I ask for yoursupport during the next 12 monthsto strengthen our wonderful associ-ation. May the hinges of friendshipnever rust! Your Uwe

Dear Friends, Even though this yearhas not yet reached its endI can present a very suc-cessful story of YAP 2006.Building on the roots laiddown by my predecessorand friend Jacques Meni-val, we were able to offer 7tours during this year :- In spring one tour fromEurope to New Zealand,- In summer two tours fromEurope to India,- In autumn one tour fromEurope to South Africa.Furthermore two toursfrom India to Europe - theyhave just come to an end -and one tour for the YAPsfrom South Africa, NewZealand and Indian Ocean, who will be coming to Eu-rope at the end of June.Altogether 53 Young Am-bassadors had the chanceto represent their countries in othercultural areas. Of the 53 YAPs whomade the tours 15 came from India, 12from Austria, 8 from Belgium, 7 fromFrance, 5 from Germany and 3 as wellfrom Denmark and South Africa. For our youngsters these tours will bean unforgettable experience, which re-mains with them for a lifetime. Eventoday I receive letters from formerYAPs with information on their dailylife and personal development. Apart from that, international friend-ship has been developed among thegroup of fellow participants and be-tween the YAPs and the children of thehosting families. But I like to drawyour attention to another positive as-pect of YAP:To implement YAP we need thehelp of hosting and sponsoringclubs, which will give the accom-modation and organize the localprogramme. This year we have 58 clubs -worldwide - involved in the YAP.They were organized and coordi-nated by the 11 national Con-venors. Without their help itwould have been impossible torun YAP as successfully as it is today. Here I like to thank all national Con-venors for their good and unremittingwork. Of course, hosting YAP meansalso work and lot of arrangements, butI do realize that occasionally 41clubs

work together with the local RoundTable clubs, for example; in helpingwith the accommodation. The concertedactions often help to stimulate the rela-

tions between the two clubs, RT / OTwhich had sometimes deflated overthe years. I often get enthusiastic feedback fromhosting clubs which were happy bythe impulse the visit of YAPs hadgiven to their club life, feeling thetouch of 41 INTERNATIONAL’sworld. Finally, I like to encourage those na-tions, which have not yet participatedin YAP to join the programme. It is anexpedient and great undertaking whichenriches your own club life and helps tomake 41 INTERNATIONAL more at-tractive to everybody. We have the facil-ity to extend the programme. I have alot of idea: for instance, there could be

an

exchange between South Africa and In-dian Ocean. Or between New Zealandand India or there could be a tourwithin the European boundaries for

Europeans. There is still a lot for us to do.Last not least, I like to say manythanks to Michel Leenders, my YAP as-sistant. It is important having a man atyour side, who you can rely on. He supported me a lot in producing theprogramme, especially when I hadproblems with my health last year. Thank you, from your Ulver - 41 INTERNATIONAL YAP-Convenor

THE HINGE JULY 2006

First and foremost I would like tothank you for having made my Eu-rope tour possible. It was most defi-nitely one of the best experiencesthat I have had. I believe my groupmember Ashwin Ganesh has alreadywritten to you on behalf of the group. All the same, I would like to write toyou as well and share our experi-ences.On 25th April we left from Bombayfor Copenhagenwith a stopoverat Milan foraround 7hrs. InMilan due topaucity of time, all we couldmanage to seewas the Cathe-dral and DuomoSquare. We reachedCopenhagen inthe evening andspent a daythere. We vis-ited Tivoli, which is theoldest amuse-ment park inDenmark.Garima and I stayed at Kertmindewhile the others stayed at Odense. We visited a number of churches, thenew opera house, the Little Mer-maid, the queen’s garden and thehouse of Hans Christian Anderson. We also went to a gymnasium (highschool) and attended classes there, though we didn’t understand muchas all the subjects were taught inDanish. (Sh_T Ed.)Our next stop was Germany. Westayed in Germany for a week andour main stops were Bad Segebergand Munster. At Bad Segeberg toowe visited a gymnasium. We alsohad day trips to Hamburg andLubeck and did sight seeing there. We visited a number of churches andcathedrals. We visited a cave wherearound 15125 bats hibernate duringwinter. The evening before our departure forMunster we attended a 41 clubmeeting which was held in an oldwater mill under restoration. InMunster we visited another amuse-

ment park called The Movie Park.We also visited the harbour, anddid general sight seeing in the city.On 7th May we left for Belgium. InBelgium, Ashwin, Aditya, Divyaand I stayed in Arlon while Garimaand Rakshita were staying in Lux-embourg. We went sight seeing inLuxembourg and visited a winery. The next day we went sight seeingin Arlon. We visited a cathedral and

a fort. We then went kayaking, anexperience that none of us aregoing to forget in a lifetime! A wordof congratulations should go to ourhost Mr.Jean-luc Sion (B) for beingable to manage six inexperiencedkayakers. On 10th we left for Brus-sels. We celebrated Rakshita’sbirthday in the train. At Brusselswe visited the chocolate museumand the Parliament house. We leftfor Antwerp the same day. AtAntwerp we visited the Diamondmuseum, the house of the painterRubens, and an ancient three mastship. We also caught (saw) themovie MI III. I believe it is yet to bereleased in India. We left forTournei on the 12th. Here we sawthe Belfry (bell tower), the cathe-dral and some museums. On 13thwe went for a day trip to Brugge, where we visited another cathedral, the town hall etc. I must mentionhere that Brugge is the most beau-tiful city we visited in our onemonth in Europe ( they did not

come to Karlsruhe! Ed.) Back inTournei we visited a bird park calledParadisio. To say it was simplybreathtaking would be an under-statement. We saw many birds, pen-guins, monkeys, seals, giraffe, kangaroo, zebras etc. To call it a birdpark would therefore be injustice. We saw the bird show and a beauti-ful white peacock (the first for all ofus). On 15th we left for Lille. We wentto the coast of the North Sea. Wevisited the Arras Caves whichwere used during World War I. Wewent rafting in an artificialstream which was thoroughly en-joyed by all of us. In the eveningwe went bowling. On the 18th wewent from Lille to Paris on theTGV (world’s fastest electronictrain which supposedly travels at310 kms/hr). We then took thetrain for Troyes, where Divya, oneof our group members, partedways with us. We did the usualsight seeing. On the 22nd we visited the Eiffel

Tower. It wasmagnificent andthe view from thetop breathtaking.

We left for our last stop to the an-cient town of Reims on the 23rd. On24th we went to Euro Disney and onthe 25th we visited the Louvre andwatched The Da Vinci Code. I don’tthink too many people have seen thereal Mona Lisa and the “reel” MonaLisa on the same day! On 26th we fi-nally left Reims for our long journeyback home.AAtt tthhee eenndd aallll II ccaann ssaayy iiss tthhaatt ii hhaavveehhaadd tthhee ttrriipp ooff aa lliiffeettiimmee aanndd II wwoouullddlliikkee ttoo tthhaannkk tthhee 4411 CClluubb AAssssoocciiaattiioonnffoorr mmaakkiinngg iitt ppoossssiibbllee.

After the successful first bikers’ tourlast year in South Africa visiting Jo-hannesburg, Polokwane and Durban wedecided to offer a 2nd Bikers’ Tour againas a Pre-Tour to this year’s 41 INTER-NATIONAL AGM, that was held to-gether with the German Old TablersAGM in Dortmund. It started fromGaggenau in the Black Forest and fin-ished in Dortmund. This was organised and led by Hans Di-eter Gesch the German IRO. The 16participants from South Africa, Fin-land, Switzerland and Germany met onMonday evening in the HotelMönchshof in Gaggenau; together withOTD President Bob Parton and the 41International President JohnHudson. On Tuesday morning the 8 Motorcyclists and the Bus (for the Girlswho did not want to ride on the Bikes, the Baggage and non-alcoholic refresh-ments) on the way to Dortmund. The first day the tour took us from

Gaggenau via Karlsruhe firstly toSpeyer, where we made a short Sight-seeing break to the ancient Cathedraland grounds. From there we rodethrough the Palatinate to Bingen; herewe crossed the River Rhine with theRhine-Ferry riding then towards St.Goar. After Rüdesheim (bringing manyhappy memories for Sandy Hudson, she had been there as a Student, andas it was her 20+ Birthday we did notgo too deep into those memories) wethen stopped for Lunch at Benno’sTruck Stop. A real “Bikers meal” wasoffered.... like “half a Pig” ..which wassupposed to be a plate of spare ribs! Before riding, much heavier laden, upthe mountain to the Loreley. As we got to St. Goarshausen we againcrossed the Rhine to travel over theHunsruck hills to the River Mosel inthe direction of Cochem. After a break at „Burg Eltz“ where wehad lost Bob Parton, we reached our

day’s target -the small village of Nur-burg in the Eifel mountains. On thesecond day, the tour led by Klaus Feyenfrom the Düsseldorfer Automobil- and

Motorsport-club. Firstlywe visited thepits at theNurburgring. Here hadstood Nuvo-rali, Fangio,

Moss, Collins , Hawthorn and allthe other “Greats”. During the af-ternoon Klaus Feyen took us off ona 3 hour tour through many narrowtight „roads“ with 3.856,778,bends!OK you are correct it was 3.856.777

bends through the Eifel mountainsaround the Nurburgring. The finish ofthe day was to be a lap round the Nur-burgring Nordschleife (North Curve its22.4 km long. Lap record 6mins 59 sec)The last day of the Tour took us fromNurburg back through the Eifel to Alte-

nahr; from here we rode alongside theRiver Ahr to Sinzig, where we had totake a long (because of heavy rain)stop. We then crossed the Rhine River

for the last time on the Ferry at Linz

(Field Marshal Bluecher had leftfrom this spot in June 1815 to helpGeneral Wellington defeat BonaparteNapoleon at Waterloo, we wondered, did he also leave on his bike?) (withall this history stuff, you will be ableto increase your knowledge by read-ing “The Hinge”!) aiming for BadHonnef , Siegburg und Roesrath fromhere the Route took us through theBergische Land(that is the mountain

Land) through Engel-skirchen, Lindlar andMarienheide to Meinerzhagen.Travellingthrough Lüdenscheid wethen eventually reached the

This is certainly keeping Great Britain on the map which is more than can be said for Charles; gourd knowswhat he is up to now giving them more trouble, somethíng about the French turning up on horses in Montluçon-wanting to change the rules again, I can never understand why they bother, they ignore them anyway!, sorryabout this one Jean-Marc, please,it is meant in fun and should not be a “béte noire” for you please “nous vousprions d’agréer,Jean Marc l’assurance de nos sentiments respectueux”I did hear that an invitation is to be issued to come along to the next Garden Party in Buck House Gardens(sorry no Home hosting) with John Bellwood on July 23. Jean-Marc can come along as well, but please not onhis horse, I know you will all enjoy the Watercress and Cucumber sandwiches (no crusts) and Tea from one ofthe Colonies ( upps! sorry about that one, Commonwealth States I should have said!)Maybe you could find accommodation at John’s Bellwood’s P(a)lace and pop over to see us in the afternoon.Gongs, ribbons and all that regalia stuff will not be worn by the guests they reserve that right only to theC(l)rown Prince who should turn up with Cammi (don’t worry, you will have no trouble to recognise her)More jottings from Downstairs as I put my ear to the door again..Yours in Royal service

We reached the smallest region ofthe Club 41 français , and alsothe area direct in the middle ofthe land was chosen to be thevenue of this years AGM, it wasorganised by 41 Club in Montlu-çon 262, on Saturday 10th June2006. It was a gathering thatpulled many Foreign Guests andDelegates of course our Neigh-bours from Austria, Belgium,Germany, Great Britain, Italy,Romania and Switzerland also “our”new member from so far away asMadagascar There were two major points to theassembly, the first being the very

active AGM, perfectly organised asone would expect in France, wherebynumerous alterations to the Frenchrules and regulations were discussedand voted upon and of course themagnificent party which had beenorganised by the “small” local club, directed by our club member SergePopoff who is also President for theRegion. He was supported by othermembers of his club and their wives. They had organised a fantastic, en-tertaining for everybody present,Circus-spectacle and on the Satur-day an overwhelming evening Gala ashow that had taken us into a superbRussian atmosphere…. and into the “Daylight Nights” of Montluçon. Amazing Show spectacle, splendidphotographs always a new surpriseduring the whole evening loaded withemotion, from which the most mov-

ing was the handing over of the

Presidents Chain, made inan atmosphere like in themiddle ages with Knightsof “King Arthur” handingthe Chain on horseback. Then handing the Club 41French Flag across to thefriends from Montluçonover to the next organisingClub for the 2007 AGM in LaRochelle 2007.We thank all present for helpingto make it a memorable event and

THE HINGE JULY 2006

You know this is a bit like writing to abig family, which of course is what 41Club is all about, friendship and extend-ing those friendships na-tionally andinternationally. It’s a cold miserable Sun-day here; the forecast isfor more snow and gener-ally bad weather for thenext few days. Snow usu-ally is restricted to themountains and higherparts of New Zealand butlast Monday we had a bigdownfall of very wetsnow down to sea levelover most of the SouthIsland causing all sorts ofproblems and some peopleare still without power andphone. Of course you arehaving lovely hot weatherover there on the otherside, such a shame and having to watchall that World Cup as well!!! Every yearsince 1977 our old Round Table and now41 Club, Tapawera (near Nelson at thetop of the South Island) has held whatwe call our Safari Weekend at the end ofFebruary. In the early days this involvedpacking the whole family in the back ofour farm trucks and heading off to theback country and camping in woolshedsetc. Now days it’s just the oldies and ofcourse 4 wheel drive vehicles but we stillhead off for a weekend some where thatis usually difficult for the majority of thepopulation to get to. We have quite a fewfarmers in our club which means wehave lots of contacts to enable us to goto these places. This year we went beyond Lake Co-leridge to a farm called Glenthorne Sta-

tion which borders on to one ofour mountain national parks, oncethere had been a forest researchstation there and we used thebuildings to stay in, no power butgas for cooking. Had a wonderfultime, huge open spaces with nopeople, explored up and downrivers and hills, great weather, gotup to 36 degrees C. and naturallyterrific fellowship with our oldfriends. There must be places forall 41 Clubs to go and spend timetogether, make it a yearly outingand really get to know each other. At the beginning of May, Tina (my

wife) and I went to meet the 41 Club inPerth, Australia. They have asked to affili-

ate

with New Zealandas they are the only41 Club in Australia(the rest of Australiahas Apex and Apex40 Clubs) and thinkthat as New Zealandis their closestneighbour we wouldbe more suitablethan being affiliatedto more distantcountries. We have goodfriends in Adelaidewho have been askingus to visit, they be-long to Lions Clubbut we don’t holdthat against them. We also have a son

who lives in Fremantle so thought“there’s a drive in between that’s askingto be done and we will end up besidePerth”!!! Needless to say that’s what wedid; drove around the coast line andacross the Nullarbor Plain and over5000km’s later we met a great gang ofpeople who were delighted (they said)to see 41ers from New Zealand and wehope will come and visit us.A fantastic trip, never boring eventhough there are so many straight roads, the longest straight is 146.5kms, justsome gentle undulations, the scenerychanges gradually all the time, there is asurprising amount of wildlife, lots ofphoto stops and it was green all the way.We had expected desert but there hasbeen rains over the last couple of yearsand being close to the Southern coast itcatches that extra bit. We would recom-mend the drive to anyone.Back home in time for the AGM here inChristchurch, as usual a great time hadby all including Uwe Kerstan the now In-ternational President, he has got a lot ofenergy or is this his way of staying fit!!!Check out our website:www.41club.org.nz for the up comingtours to New Zealand over the nextcouple of years, we would like to seeyou here, “down under”.Yours in 41 CheersDerek Johns IRO New Zealand

THE HINGE JULY 2006

WWiillllyy PPoouulleett –– AAnn AApppprreecciiaattiioonnIt was with great sadnessthat we learnt of the death ofWilly Poulet on 7th April2006.

Willy who with justificationcould be called “Mr 41 Bel-gium”, was co-founder of Leu-ven-Louvain, the first 41Club in Belgium in 1972 andwho went on to become theFounder-President of theirnational association, 41 Clubs Bel-gium two years later. As was the custom for manyoverseas clubs those days, immediately it was formed,Leuven-Louvain affiliated tothe Association of Ex-TablersClubs, followed a few monthslater by Brussels. Because ofthis influx of overseas clubs, some years earlier the Associ-ation had decided to reservetwo seats on its Council foroverseas members and thefist to be elected to one ofthose seats was Be Dommer-ing (Netherlands) in 1966.Having served six years, hewas followed by EinhartMelzer (Germany) in 1972.In the following year the sec-ond seat was offered to, andaccepted by, Willy. Howeverat that time much was hap-pening on the 41 INTER-NATIONAL front and Willynever took up his seat. In-stead he resigned from theAssociation, together withLeuven-Louvain and Brus-sels, and turned his efforts tosupporting France in settingup 41 INTERNA-TIONAL.Thus 41 Clubs Belgium be-

came the fourth and youngestFounder member of 41 IN-TERNATIONAL and, in duecourse, Willy became thefourth 41 INTERNATIONALPresident. At that time, the 41 INTER-NATIONAL Rules were thatthe retiring 41 INTERNA-TIONAL President shouldhand over to the incoming 41INTERNATIONAL Presidentat the Annual General Meet-ing of the former’s Associa-tion. In this way, Willybecame 41 INTERNA-TIONAL President at theGerman Annual GeneralMeeting in May 1978. Willy’sown Association’s AnnualGeneral Meeting was due inOctober that year when, hadhe handed over to his succes-sor, he would have been 41INTERNTIONAL Presidentfor only six months. Willywas determined to have atleast a full year in office. Infact he continued for a totalof 18 months as 41 INTER-NATIONAL President, hand-ing over to Bob Oulsnam ofthe Association of Ex-Tablers’Clubs at the 41 Clubs Bel-gium’s Annual General Meet-ing in October 1979. To getthe timetable back on course,Bob proceeded to service 18months as 41 INTERNA-TIONAL President, finallyhanding over to his successorat the Association’s AnnualGeneral Meeting at Buxton inApril 1981.

During his time as 41 IN-TERNATIONAL President,Willy called the only Extraor-

dinary General Meeting(other than that held recentlyin India in 2002) of 41 IN-TERNATIONAL. It was atthe Association’s Annual Gen-eral Meeting at Poole in April1979 and it was held to allowtwo Associations, Austria andNew Zealand, to becomemembers; Denmark had towait until the 41 INTERNA-TIONAL Annual GeneralMeeting in October that yearbefore joining 41 INTERNA-TIONAL.For his services to interna-tional co-operation, Willy waselected an Honorary Memberof 41 INTERNATIONAL in1978.EJMiller (GB)20.04.2006

Report of the Archivist Club 41 International

Dear Mr. President, dear delegates and dear friends. On Sunday, the 19th of March 2006, I had the pleasure to welcome Gerhard and Christine Wirth from Club 41 Austria at our home. Gerhard had some business to attend to in Switzerland and volunteered to act as “Club 41Forwarder”

and bring me the contents of the archive. He went to collect the goods (we both thought 2 – 3 “Banana-boxes”) from Peter Poech and brought it to my place in Bertschikon. What a surprise: The volume was double! Gerhard, I thank you very much for your help and assistance to get the stuff to my place. Now I can confirm that I received everything Peter Poech took over from Otto Adlhofer and that the archive materials of Club 41 International are at my place:

Im Mueselacher 19, 8614 Bertschikon

Switzerland.

Unfortunately, there is no inventory of all the goods! I will have to go through all the papers and I will issue one. Hopefully, I will have it completed for the HYM (13.-15/10/2006) in Southend-on-Sea, Great Britain. Peter Poech is still receiving documents and material for the archives and asked me to raise this point in my report to make sure that every one concerned is aware of the change of the archivists where the new address material has to be sent to! Looking forward to see you all in Dortmund, I remain with my best regards
