Visit to the Simpson Mansion, Mision Lago, May 10, 2016

Our trip to Thonotosassa to visit June and Tom Simpson’s ultra-mansion is now scheduled.

The Simpsons are opening their 25,000 square foot Spanish-colonial villa to share with the community. The

home contains replicas of the oval office and the Tampa movie theater, a 5,000 square foot courtyard, a koi-filled lilly pond, and an orchid

greenhouse. Lake Thonotosassa borders the property. Nothing is understated. Its interior is adorned with cusom features and

extensive handcrafted detailing. A Hollywood Walk of Fame in the hallway leading to the theater has the names of actors etched in stars on the floor.

A gallery of rock-and-roll memorabilia and guitars signed by famous musicians line the walls nearby.

If you’ve signed up but have questions, contact Pat Carey.

(Community Meeting Minutes continued from page 1)

• David Neil reminded everyone that there is a Happy Hour scheduled at the pool today at 4:30 pm and to bring a snack to share.

• Sharon Newcom asked if there was any update on the new homes being built. Bob Worth responded that the building permit was lost and Hometown America will need to reapply to get new building permits.

• Ned Sponsler mentioned that the attorneys for the three houses involved with the Swiftmud lawsuit met with arbitrators on March 1 but there was no agreement and the case was postponed to June. Sandra Neil asked if there would be any drainage improvements made but that is tied into the Swiftmud case.

• Linda Guglielmini asked about the upkeep of the yards as they have their house for sale and the yards are not being mowed. Ned stated that the office has changed lawn services again and to give Hometown America time to work out the details.

There was no additional business. The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 a.m. Faye Broughton, Community Secretary

Higher quality entertainment like Crystal Gage is relatively expensive to bring into the Highlands.

However, attendance levels and expressed enthusiasm for this past year’s higher cost shows indicate

better entertainers are precisely what Highlanders want and are willing to pay for.

To minimize the risk of dubious attendance for costly shows, the Social Committee has

decided to “package” 3 of the best shows into a “2017 Entertainment Series” and offer “season tickets”

for the series. The start of season ticket sales will be announced in an early fall 2016 newsletter to

give snowbirds a chance to contact friends, if they want a chance at early seat selection.

The “Series” will run from January 2017 through mid-April and include the following entertainers:

Friday, January 13th, Splittin’ Image

Saturday, March 18th, Rick Wilson

Saturday, April 15th, Red Hot & Blue Color

Both individual and series tickets will be sold for these shows, so there is no pressure on anyone to

purchase season tickets. However, we are offering “perks” for buying season tickets, so we’re hoping

this will be a sustainable approach going forward for ensuring predictable

attendance at more expensive shows.

Managers Corner

Holly Morse

Office: 352-518-4607

Hello all…..since my April article was not in the newsletter last month, I am repeating it

below with an italicized update under each paragraph.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words last month after the passing of my step-father. He and my mother were married for 53 years. He was truly a Dad to me and will always be missed.

I was out of the office during the time I would have normally written the newsletter article and had intended to inform you that we are starting a new lawn service company at the beginning of April. Their name is Bailey Scapes, owned by David Bailey. David and I have worked together before and I always found him to be responsive to the needs and requests of the community. His crew take care and pride in their work and I believe you will see a difference very soon after they start work. Please be patient during their first few visits while they get to know the community and each of your home sites. As always, you may bring any concerns to Sharon or I in the office. I know we had a rough start with the new lawn company, but I think we can all agree that they are improving with each visit. It does take a little time to get to know a community and David does take his work seriously. Please continue to bring any concerns to the office so that we can relay the information promptly.

Clubhouse Update: Oh, the ongoing, seemingly never ending, Clubhouse project! Actually, other than carpet cleaning, the overall clubhouse work was completed with the cleaning of the A/C’s and ductwork. It is the offices that have taken additional time. We have successfully come up with a complete scope of work to resolve the air quality issue. Much of it was caused by water damaged insulation above the ceiling and leaking windows. Insulation has already been replaced over the offices and in several areas throughout the clubhouse where there were previous roof leaks. We are now waiting on the new windows for the front of the building to complete the project. The windows had to be ordered since they are not a standard size and are expected to arrive no later than the 8th of April. Once on site, the contractor can complete their install, interior drywall, and paint, moving our “return” date to around April 15th. I’m sure no one will be surprised to hear that after waiting 6 weeks for the new windows for the clubhouse offices, they were the wrong size. They have been re-ordered with an expected delivery around mid-May.

(Holly’s message continues on the next page)

Appreciation for First Responders: I didn’t receive any response to my February article about working together on a charity project so I’m repeating my call for volunteers below. Perhaps I didn’t explain the event well enough to pique your interest.

A “Chinese Auction” is an event where we ask local businesses and vendors to donate services or gift cards to us for our charity event. Hometown America would also donate gift items and gift cards. Residents then buy tickets, usually at $1.00 apiece (no limit). At the scheduled event, with refreshments, you drop your tickets in baskets in front of the gift items you would like to win and then a drawing is held for each item.

Really a lot of fun for us, but it does require a little work to put together. At the last “Auction” I hosted, HTA provided a 50” TV as the grand prize. The proceeds from the “Auction” would be used to purchase items to donate to the Sheriff and Fire Departments for calls that involve children. I’m asking for a few volunteers to help me put this event together. Also, asking for people who are talented at putting gift baskets together with items that HTA would purchase. This event always becomes an annual request at most communities.

Reprint of article from February’s newsletter:

“Recruiting Volunteers - As you might remember from my article last month, Hometown America is a company that likes to give back to the communities in which they do business. Each year we are asked to show appreciation to our local law enforcement and first responders’ that provide services that are so vitally important to us. My idea this year is to donate toys and stuffed animals to the Sheriff and Fire Departments to be used on calls that involve children. I would like to hold an event that will be fun for us and also raise funds for these donation items. We would then present our donation to the “Departments” in our clubhouse with all residents invited. I will need some help in organizing and planning the fundraising event. Please contact me if you would like to be part of the “Chinese Auction” Committee. I promise….you’re going to love it!

Please contact me if you are interested in helping out. The event wouldn’t be held until September of October, so there is plenty of time to work on it!”

Have a Great Month!

from noon to 1PM in the Highlands Clubhouse Main Meeting Room. Floor yoga is optional.

Classes are free for Silver Sneakers cardholders and $5/session for all others. For further information, please contact Lynda Chynoweth or Christy Hughes.

***************

Regrettably, Michelle Mack is no longer teaching mixed work-out classes in our community. Interested residents are continuing to meet every Wednesday and Friday at noon (also in the clubhouse) for a FREE group work-out to

fitness DVDs. This a perfect exercise opportunity for those of us who “don’t do mornings”!

Continuation of these fitness gatherings during the summer months is dependent on the level of participation. Please contact Lynda Chynoweth for an update on current status.

Yarn Crafters

We meet once a week, on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 12:00 in the craft room. Many of the pieces we create are given to charitable organizations. If you want to learn how to knit or crochet, there are experienced needle crafters present to teach you.

Jo Basile

Meet Your Neighbors

Would you like a chance to meet and visit with your neighbors over a free cup of coffee? Then come to one of our Saturday morning Koffee Klatches. We have coffee ready every Saturday at 9:00 AM when there isn’t a Community meeting or other conflict over the clubhouse facilities. No agenda or speakers, just a chance for our community to come together.

Mariana & Don Marz

Yarn donations of any kind for our charity projects are always appreciated.

Contributions for Causes

Food Pantry of Zephyrhills

Canned and other non-perishable items can be dropped off in the clubhouse for delivery to the Food Pantry of Zephyrhills. What started as a Christmas project by the Sunshine Committee has turned in to a year round collection effort. There is a basket for donation in the main meeting room, just inside the double doors from the lobby. Sunshine Committee members empty and deliver goods left on a regular basis.

Meals on Wheels apers and bottles/cans can be brought to the East Pasco Meals on Wheels, 38145 15th Avenue, Zephyrhills (813) 782-7859. They have someone manning the collections from 7 - 11 am, but trailers are available for drop-offs 24 hours a day. Directions are 301 South to 15th Avenue, left on 15th, down two blocks to the facility. It's at the corner of 15th Avenue and 8th Street.

Habitat for Humanity Bring your used aluminum cans to Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church, 37015 Orange Valley Lane, Dade City (Corner of Fort King Road and Clinton). The Church recycles aluminum cans for HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. A recycling container stands next to the dumpster in the parking lot across the street from the church.

Gulfside Regional Hospice

Contributions such as clothing, household goods, and furniture are accepted for their thrift shop just to the south of our main entrance across US 301. They are open for donations Monday thru Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Ronald McDonald House Aluminum can tabs are being collected in a box located in the craft room (previously in the lobby by the map table). John Williams on Country Club monitors the box and sends on the tabs to benefit Ronald McDonald House when justified by the quantity. Help is deeply appreciated.

Library Donations We are proud of our library and welcome your donations. However, since space is limited we cannot accept the following items:

Encyclopedias text books reference books magazines older than 3 months outdated travel or tour books appliance manuals

Thank you! Your cooperation is appreciated.

Ticket Sales for Social Committee

Sponsored Highlands Events

Unless stated otherwise on event flyers or newsletter ads, tickets for all Social Committee sponsored events are sold at the clubhouse on Thursday nights before bingo and before

Community meetings which are held on the third Saturday of each month. Cash payment is preferred, but checks made out

to the Community Treasurer, Jim Sullivan, are acceptable. When tickets are sold, a ticket is required to participate in any

part of the event. All ticket sales are final. No refunds will be issued but you are free to “transfer” or sell your ticket to other homeowners. An alternative is to have someone turn in your ticket and get meals “to go” when you or someone in your party are unable to attend.

Do you have 4 hours a week to share with others? Come be a part of the Florida Hospital Zephyrhills volunteer team and help fulfill our misson of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ. Many positions are available to be of service to others. Come by, call, or go on line to see how you can

become a volunteer: 813-779-6256 or www.floridahospital.com/zephyrhills/volunteer .
