Samworth Church Academy Swords bring home the medals The Samworth Church Academy Swords Fencing Club has reaped success at the East Midlands Regional Competition held at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham for beginner and intermediate epee fencers. Six competitors trained by head coach Miroslaw Poplawski were entered by the Mansfi eld club and four came back with medals, and for some of those medal winners it was their fi rst competition!Simon Williams won bronze in the semi-fi nals in his fi rst competition and club teammate, Steve Bartholomew, took a silver medal in the fi nals after only fencing for four months at the Samworth Church Academy Swords Fencing Club.Dave Waring, a relative newcomer to the sport took home silver in the intermediates, but only after facing his own coach Cyprian Bogacz in the fi nal who beat him to win gold. Cyprian said, “I did not expect to win at all. In fact Dave had won all his pool fi ghts including one against me. So I wasn’t very confi dent. But probably this helped me in the end as I wasn’t so stressed about the result and I could concentrate on the fi ght rather than result.” Dave Waring said the all TSCA Sword fi nal was a great moment for the club. “Cyprian got a few points ahead so I was always playing catch up and with time running out it was diffi cult to try and claw the points back. I think the fi nal score was 15-10. I would have been happy to have fi nished mid- table, so I was delighted to pick up a silver medal.” Two other competitors from the club testing their skills at the regional fi nals were Stan Alford and Dave Gibson. The club, which was only started two-and-a-half years ago, is fast gaining in popularity and has recently been awarded a grant by the Nottinghamshire Olympic Legacy Fund to fi nance the purchase of additional equipment.Members of the public interested in joining the Samworth Church Academy Swords Club are asked to contact [email protected]

Regular Educational FeatureMaking study effectiveThe exam season for many of our children will begin after the Easter holidays. Encouraging good study habits and supporting teenagers taking A Level and GCSE exams can be tricky as youngsters juggle a number of activities and emotions. For many, the pressure is immense to succeed as university and future career and study plans rest upon the results they receive in their exams this summer. Here are some suggestions to help your child develop good study habits:
Use a quiet study place - provide a space for revising with no distractions such as the television.
Manage time with a planner – encourage your child to create a timetable of when their exams are and then get them to plan revision activities to correspond with this.
Use a system when reading or memorising – just reading information doesn’t mean that it is being learnt. Encourage your child to create mind maps and condense information into bite size chunks on small cards.
Don’t study one subject for more than two hours at a time – variety is key to successful to study and a good mantra to adopt is “little and often” when it comes to revision. Studying the same subject for too long can be counter-productive.
Take regular breaks – taking a ten minute break every 30 to 40 minutes keeps the mind fresh.
Eat healthily – staying hydrated and eating a well-balanced diet provides fuel for the brain.
Take exercise – the mind and body work much better when both are exercised. A 20 minute walk a day can clear the cobwebs and prepare the brain for work.
Get plenty of sleep – aim for around 8 hours per night.and fi nally.....
Help your child to try to maintain a positive attitude!Good luck to all those students preparing for exams.

Sports city inspires future graduates
University-level students from West Nottinghamshire College have just returned from a sport-fi lled residential designed to help them focus on their future careers.Students and tutors from the foundation degree programmes in Sport and Fitness, Sport and Coaching, Sport and Coaching Development and Sport and Exercise Science attended a two-day visit to Manchester which included them being coached by sporting professionals and visiting world-class sporting facilities. At the English Institute of Sport (EIS) learners took part in triple jump and hurdles athletics coaching by female coaches who were being fi lmed by Sky Sports News for their involvement in the forthcoming International Women’s Day (8
March). While visiting the National Cycling Centre learners got to meet British Cycling’s performance director and coach, Sir David Brailsford, and watched members of the development squad in training. They also took part in track cycling and BMX riding at the velodrome.During the residential students also went to Manchester City Football Club’s home ground – at the Etihad Stadium – where they discovered more about possible careers and job opportunities for the future. The visit follows on from the Higher Education curriculum’s ‘Futures Fortnight’ held in January.‘Futures Fortnight’ takes place each year to provide students on university-level programmes with opportunities to plan for their futures offering them the chance to meet specialists from a range of industries.
Student on the Foundation Degree in Sport and Exercise Science Simon Gunn said: “The visitto Manchester was awesome. It really opened my eyes to what career opportunities may be available to us after we’ve graduated from the degree. “The ‘Futures Fortnight’ is a very worthwhile programme to help university-level students plan ahead and gain career inspiration.”

YOUTHZONEGiant Infl atable Classroom at All Saints’!
In March students at All Saints’
School in Mansfi eld will encountered
a giant infl atable classroom on
their play-ground! Provided by ‘The
Mighty Creatives’ the classroom
gave students
an opportunity
to showcase
a number of
projects they have worked on over
the past few months both to fellow
students and
to visiting
pupils from
local primary
schools.
Over the past
four months
a group of
gifted and
higher students in year 8 have
been developing their literacy
skills through a variety of mixed
media techniques. Using a variety
of workshops the students have
developed 3 ways of communicate
their ideas, thoughts and feelings
about a particular topic:
The fi lm crew have produced a
short fi lm that will be shown to
year 5 and 6’s about the school
routines and what happens in the
daily life of a typical ‘All Saints
student’. The fi lm aims to answer
any unanswered questions from the
primary students as they prepare to
move to secondary school. The fi lm
was shown on the launch day and is
accessible on our website.
The newsletter and blog crew have
developed a new termly newsletter
for students that include stories
about various topics to inspire our
students; additionally, using fi ctional
characters, they have produced
a variety of blogs for the website
about topics we all share an interest
in for example: being motivated
to do homework, making friends,
transition, exam stress, and sport.
The radio crew have produced
a new radio station that will be
launched on the day. The show will
be broadcast as
a pilot with a view
to it, potentially
having a regular
slot in school.
Content includes:
quizzes, comical
news from
around the world,
debates, interviews with students
and birthday “shoutouts”.
At the end of the day there will be
a celebration event for parents and
governors to attend.
Brave Youngsters are Honoured by Mansfi eld Rotary Club’s Annual Courage Awards. The Rotary Courage Awards celebrated its 22nd year with a great night in March, celebrating the achievements of those who are brave and hardy in the face of adversity.
The event took place at Mansfi eld’s Civic Centre to honour nine fantastic young individuals, who each had an amazing story behind their award for courage.
Mansfi eld Rotary president, Mr Paul Bacon said “Courage is not only showing bravery in the face of danger, more often courage is the day-to-day determination and hard work of dealing with, adjusting to, and hopefully overcoming, the obstacles and harsh realities that life may present.”
He continued to say “ …Courage has been exemplifi ed by all the young people here today, but not only by those who have been nominated, but also by the parents, siblings, grandparents and carers of these amazing young people who share in their lives and live with their diffi culties.”
Photo shows some of the award winners with their celebratory plaques along with dignitaries who attended the event.
Well done to all from the High Life Magazine

Editor’s InterviewWith Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner: Paddy Tipping IntroductionDo I really need to introduce Paddy Tipping? I think most people locally know Paddy through the different organisations he is involved with and of course as a former MP for Sherwood he was regularly seen out and about in the local villages around my home village of Rainworth. More recently I bumped into Paddy at The Big Snore, for Framework, where like myself and many other volunteers he braved sleeping outdoors to raise money and profi le for the Charity.Paddy was elected Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner in November 2012 and has over the last few months got his teeth stuck into the role, making it a priority to speak to the people he is representing, listening to what they have to say about crime, safety and police issues in their area.HistoryPaddy Tipping lives in Bakersfi eld in Nottingham. His early years were spent in West Yorkshire, near Halifax where he went to Hipperholme Grammar School, before moving to Nottingham in 1969 to go to University. He studied Philosophy at the University of Nottingham and then subsequently gained an MA in Social Sciences in 1978. Since that time he has laid his roots in Nottingham and hasn’t looked back since. Paddy has always enjoyed working with people since he started his career. That career spans over 40 years during which time he has worked as a Social Worker, Project Leader for the Children’s Society in the city, as a Nottinghamshire County Councillor and as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Sherwood from 1992 – 2010. The New Police Commissioner
Paddy you put yourself up for election for the Police Commissioner’s role – what did
you believe you had to offer that got you the vote? When I was elected as the People’s Commissioner in November 2012, I promised to speak up for people and I think they believed, based on my track record as an MP, that I meant it. I did
mean it, and I am doing just that.
Since your appointment what changes have you or
are you looking to put into place?A. I’m already delivering on my election pledges to:• Campaign against Government funding cuts to Nottinghamshire’s budget for policing.• Improve Community Policing across Nottinghamshire by taking on 150 extra Police Offi cers and 100 Police Community Safety Offi cers. • Reduce anti-social behaviour by 50%.• Give extra priority and resources to domestic violence and crimes against girls and women.• Ensure that the victims of crime are treated as people, not cases, and will properly fund victim support. • Be fair, honest and protect taxpayers’ money.
Increase in Council Tax – “A Small Amount to Pay” you statedA. “I’m obviously delighted that
the Police and Crime Panel has given the go-ahead not just to the increase in the amount of council tax paid towards policing, but to the other two key elements of my plans - the Police and Crime Plan and the budget. However, we remain open to public views about the plan. It’s tremendously important that the county’s residents and people who work in Nottinghamshire keep talking to us so that we can represent their needs - and we will keep listening.”The budget includes a major investment in frontline policing, which enables the Commissioner to keep his promise of putting more bobbies and PCSOs in the
county’s neighbourhoods. His plans are for 150 police offi cers to be recruited in 2013-14 and a further 120 police offi cers in each of the next two years. In addition, the budget allows for 35 PCSOs to be recruited in 2013-14 and 2014-15, with 30 more in 2015-16.I am adamant that crime must continue to fall in Nottinghamshire. We have to keep on our toes - and that can’t be achieved if resources are cut. The Panel has listened to our point of view and clearly sees our position, which is good news all round. Now we need to get on and deliver the plan.In the face of Government cuts, the amount of council tax paid towards policing will be increased by 1.95% per cent in 2013/14. That increase, which will bring in an extra £1m, works out at less than a penny a day for the county’s taxpayers.
Are you really able to make a difference?Yes. For example I have
commissioned a research project to look at how we can improve the policing experiences of those from black and minority communities. We have made a commitment to make changes, and I believe this research project will look at, and identify, the reasons why the relationship between minority communities and the police has broken down. I hope this research will help us to forge new relationships with local communities and enable us to build some bridges.I am also talking to a lot of young people, who are the guardians of our communities in the future. We’ve held very successful web-chat, when over 70 young people logged on to see what we were talking about, I’ve been answering questions at the Broxtowe Youth Council and practically every week we have students coming to see us. We want to understand the issues facing young people and see how we can help break down any perceived barriers. This type of face to face contact is much easier for a Police and Crime Commissioner than it was for the Police Authority. In total, over the last 130 days, I believe

that we have listened to the views of over 7000 people.
In closing I believe that you also have a number of other organisations
that you are involved in? A. Yes I am the Chair of the Nottinghamshire Community Foundation which is the largest grant giving body locally. Also I am the Chair of the Nott’s LIFT Co partnerships, which have built many of Nottingham’s and Nottinghamshire’s new health centres, as well as being the Vice President of the Ramblers Association. Plus I also work occasionally as a lecturer at the University of Nottingham.
A busy gentlemen but I am sure you must have some leisure time?
A. Oh yes I love running and rambling. Keeping fi t is really
important and being out in the fresh air gives him me a chance to think. I also fi nd spending time with my daughters and four young grandchildren is always a joy - although the young ones are all very early risers.

Mansfi eld’s new bus station – The journey’s nearly over!WHAT’S taller than three giraffes, has a fl oor area that’s bigger than an Olympic-sized swimming pool and will be used by more passengers each year than East Midlands Airport?
The answer is Mansfi eld’s brand-new bus station which opened its doors for business on Easter Sunday and takes bus travel in the town well and truly into the 21st century.
Situated in the heart of the town, the new £9m station is just 180 metres (195 yards) from the market place and will be used by more than fi ve million passengers a year – that’s more than East Midlands Airport.
More than 5,000 bus journeys a week will use the station which has a fl oor area bigger than an Olympic-sized swimming pool – or 18 blue whales!
To mark the completion of the building, a ceremony attended by Patrick McLoughlin, Secretary of State for Transport, took place on March 11th.
Among the guests who attended were pupils from the Queen Elizabeth Academy who, along with pupils from King Edward Primary School, contributed towards a time capsule which has been buried beneath the station, showing future residents of
Mansfi eld what life was like in the early 21st century.
The fun really started for the people of Mansfi eld on Easter Saturday, with a family fun day when people came along and took a look for themselves.
The new station is much closer to Mansfi eld’s railway station than the old one and is linked with a brand-new footbridge, helping to create a transport “hub” in the town, encouraging more people to travel by public transport and playing a crucial part in the regeneration and future prosperity of the town centre.
The new building is light, airy and safe, with extensive use of glass. It is fully enclosed and has a comfortable waiting area with plenty of seating, toilets, a baby changing area, shops and refreshments.
It also boasts a staffed travel information offi ce, electronic timetable information, CCTV cameras linked to the town centre system and automatic doors separating the waiting passengers from buses.
It also has a high-tech video wall for use by local businesses and community groups, which will help provide local information on a variety of subjects.

Beach SwaggerWondering what to pack for your holiday this summer? Look
no further. Here are our top tips for looking good this holiday season on the beach and at the bar.
Retro sunglasses. If you make just one update to your wardrobe this summer make it a pair of retro inspired shades. 1960s and 70s eyewear with softly rounded lenses is a must have.
Detailing should be kept to a minimum for a simple, classic look. The exception to this rule is the sweat or brow bar - a bold bar across the top of both lenses - updating this season’s aviator styles.Go sockless. When warm weather strikes banish your socks to the back of the drawer. Let your feet go commando in sneakers or loafers with cropped, ankle-grazing tapered pants. Modern and casual, the sockless style transforms evening tailoring for a sleek summer look.Lead with your shoes. A pair of bright, bold, primary-colour shoes transforms an outfi t of classic neutrals and adds spark to a pastel palette. From boat shoes to plimsolls, even brogues, make a colour
splash with this summer’s boldest footwear.Embrace washed out shades. Faded greens, blues, yellows and even pinks reign on the beach this summer. Wear pastel jeans or shorts with a classic white T-shirt for an easy way in to the trend. Try a retro patterned shirt for a preppy twist and go for short, folded back sleeves in a
nod to retro-Americana.Dive in at the deep-end with mid-thigh trunks. Forget oversize board shorts that hover below the knee, 2013 is the time of the mid-thigh short. And fi nally... grab a beach blazer. Think you can’t look dapper in shorts? Think again. A washed out preppy pastel blazer takes your shorts straight from the beach and into the bar. A crisp white blazer looks great with patterned, pastel or primary-colour shorts for a sophisticated take on the style.Holiday gear at the ready, it’s time to get those cases packed.IMAGE INFORMATION:Light Blue Collezione Linen Miracle Blazer MARKS AND SPENCERRed Shoes and Aviator Sunglasses both RED HERRING, DEBENHAMSPink Chino Shorts from NEXT

Xbox 360 game Review: Bioshock InfinityRelease: Out Now
Welcome to the city of Columbia. Floating
amongst the clouds, cruising far above sea level, this is a place unlike any you’ve ever seen. Please enjoy your voyage...
The third game in the popular Bioshock series, BioShock Infinite breaks away from the underwater setting of the first two games to take players into a floating city held aloft by dirigibles. The game is set in 1912. You play as Booker DeWitt, a disgraced former private detective who’s picked up a
new case. Your goal is to find Elizabeth, a young woman who’s gone missing and return her unharmed. The only problem is that she’s being kept on this flying city. Columbia was once a symbol of America’s success as a nation, floating around the
world as a travelling World’s Fair, a marvel of human
innovation. But strange things
have happened since Columbia’s
unveiling in 1900, and now the city has disappeared into
the clouds. DeWitt knows how to find it, but over the years stories have been told about Columbia having unlawful heavy armament and deranged citizens Do not
expect this to be a pleasure cruise.

In my role I receive lots of information
regarding various charity events. This year I was particularly drawn to the Mansfi eld Big Snore on behalf of Framework.
The organisation in partnership with Mansfi eld
St Mark’s Church challenged people to give up their warm beds for a single night and take part in the ninth annual Mansfi eld Big Snore at St Mark’s Church, Nottingham Road, on Friday, January 25th 2013. (The date was changed luckily to the 1st March due to extreme cold and snow).Framework believes that around seven people are currently sleeping rough in the Mansfi eld area every night – a number that would be signifi cantly higher if it was not for its work in the town. What seemed a great idea at the time, when I registered several weeks ago, seemed a scary reality at 8 pm on Friday evening as I donned my thermals, several layers of clothing, gloves and walking hat. Packing my car with cardboard boxes, waterproof covering, a sleeping bag and a survival pack off I went into the unknown. I must admit I was very anxious-would it be too cold? Would I have anyone to talk to? Could I sleep on a hard fl oor?Having never slept anywhere that I couldn’t plug in my hair dryer it was a big shock and upon arrival it was amazing to see all these fabulous dens set up and the amount of people taking part – probably about 130 - apparently an all time record. It was nice to see a few friendly faces and thanks to the help of one very kind guy from Western Power I soon had a little ‘Diane’s Den’. We were served a lovely supper with hot soup followed by an introduction by Event organiser Pam Bishop from St Mark’s, who has been involved with the project for the
last eight years. She explained how the event had started in January 2005 with a choir member and friend sleeping out overnight on the church steps, raising £250. Since then the event has gradually increased and last
year’s event, which raised almost £18,000, allowed Framework to launch a specialist “move-on” service at its accommodation complex in Sherwood Street that focuses solely on supporting former rough sleepers into long-term accommodation. As a result, the number of people moving on – and thus the numbers able to move in – has nearly trebled. So lights out and did I sleep? Well I woke up with the birds singing and I thought “Wow I have done it – birds singing – must be 6am”? No it was half past four and luckily we as volunteers had the privilege
of a hot cup of a tea inside the church. After a cooked breakfast and being
awarded my ‘Big Snore’ mug and certifi cate I said farewell to the great people I had met. Straight home, bath and bed. This experience was an amazing eye opener for me into the harshness of the life of homeless people and made me realise the wonderful warm home I have. The Big Snore, this year attracted its fi rst sponsor this year in the shape of Western Power Distribution. Graham Paling, Western Power Distribution’s Team Manager for Mansfi eld, said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring the Mansfi eld Big Snore (team photo below). The work that the charity does is crucial to helping homeless people in the area, particularly at this time of year when it is cold outside. Some of our own staff will be taking part on the night and we hope that the event is the
most successful yet, raising valuable funds for The Mansfi eld Appeal.”Marathon Media gave a donation to the cause and if you would like to give a little in support please visit www.frameworkha.org/bigsnore.
Diane would like to say thank you to the following businesses who helped put together her “overnight kit” for the Big Snore, Jennifer at Midlands Insurance Services, Mark at BJ Bakery, Matt at Carpet Bargains. The Big snore so far has raised almost £18,000

12 Ways to get MORE FACEBOOK ‘SHARES’The question on everyone’s mind is: How viral can we get our fanpage ‘status updates’?Our job is to: Craft our ‘status updates’ to inspire our visitors and fans to say “Wow, I have to share this with my friends!”1. Be CONSISTENT – Post between 5 and 10 times per week to
stay ‘top of mind’ with your fans2. Get the TIMING right – The prime time for you to post updates
will depend on the type of business and the time zones that you are operating in. e.g.. Restaurants are likely to get the most engagement between 7am and 12pm whilst retail maybe from 8am and 2pm
3. Catch their eye with IMAGES and VIDEO – Alternate the media that you use in your post updates using images, video and text
4. Keep it BRIEF – Posts are best kept to no more than 3 lines (between 100 and 150 characters). These attract 60% more likes, comments and shares
5. Make it RELEVANT – Make sure that your content lets your fans know that you know who they are
6. Be AUTHENTIC – Your voice should be true to your brand and who and what you stand for. Don’t try to be something you’re not, be you! That’s why your fans are your fans
7. Have a CALL-TO-ACTION – fans are more likely to like, comment & share your content if you prompt them by asking
8. Be creative with APPS – Contests and promotion
apps, forms and surveys can deepen the involvement and engagement with a business or brand
9. Create a sense of URGENCY – Provide up-to-the-minute tips and tricks to show you’re providing your fans with the very latest news and value
10. Provide VALUE – Before you share anything with your fans, always ask yourself...Will my fans fi nd value in this content?
11. Be ENTERTAINING – People love to be entertained, to laugh and taken away from the serious side of day to day life, even if only for a second or two. Think of a video clip, a funny picture, a quote or story to share
12. Provide EDUCATION – People love to learn, to share how to guides and tips. Use a link to take your fans to download some great content
Shameless plug! – I’ve written a book which will feature in the Amazon Kindle store from next month entitled “How to set up a fanpage correctly, an Internet marketers guide” (What most people don’t know) Just click this link to learn more http://bit.ly/YkwX75. Live, Love, Share and Inspire! Warmest wishes, Carl :)

Richard Fuller, Director of Kirkby in Ashfi eld family run business; County Battery and Chairman of Mansfi eld & Ashfi eld Federation of Small Businesses. In 1974 County Battery Services was set up by Richard’s father; Terry Fuller. Working from his mother-in-law’s double garage he supplied local garages and haulage companies with starter batteries. The business gradually grew and in 1976 the company started battery recycling. The wheels began seriously in motion and in 1980 a small shop was purchased in Nuthall, Nottingham. Richard Fuller left school to join the family fi rm and to run that outlet.
Sadly in 1987 Terry Fuller passed away in 1987 leaving the business to his Son, Richard. The company then diversifi ed into every sector of battery sales. In 1988 they launched their own brand automotive battery “Fuller” and in 1996 The Company incorporated and the wholesale part of the business was moved to much larger premises in Kirkby in Ashfi eld, Nottinghamshire whilst retaining the Nuthall shop as a depot. The company continued its diversifi cation and included a battery pack building facility for bespoke rechargeable batteries. The business continued to grown and in 1990 secured a contractor to be sole distributor status for “Fisch” Batteries. In 1997 the businesses adopted a superhero corporate image “Superdick” that originated from a nickname given to the current MD by some customers. Many local business people and customers will know Richard as an extremely fl amboyant and fun character with an exuberant personality – just great to be around with his positive attitude to business but extremely humble in his brilliant business
achievements. As technology developed within the business world County Battery launched its ecommerce website in 1998 being one of the fi rst battery websites to have an online ordering facility. With further growth the business again relocated to a 5000 sq ft warehouse in 2003 and the same year achieved a prestigious ‘Investors in People’ Award. In 2008 County Battery recycled over 400 tonnes of batteries in one month and became the fi rst battery supplier in the UK to have all its products SDP approved. The business developed over the next two years and in 2010 opened the Fuller Recycling as a separate division. Not one to rest on his laurels in 2012 Richard launched a new website and online trading portal to deal with increased demand. Then with increased stock, in 2013 he expanded his retail outlet once again. It is not wide knowledge that County Batteries are great exporters and in 2013 their export sales topped at £150,000 in one month. Current areas include Southern Ireland, France and Spain. So if you want advice from a man who can and did!More recently the Kirkby wholesalers has expanded from purely car batteries and diversifi ed into selling a variety of motoring goods including; wiper blades, bulbs and products for maintenance including car wash and oil. Also in relation to the batteries they have expanded their
product range and now sell torch batteries and ‘green batteries’. Richard stated “We can even run your house on green energy batteries so come and talk to us about how we can do this”.Richard has recently taken over as Chairman of the Mansfi eld and Ashfi eld Branch of the Federation of Small Business, running a branch meeting on the second Monday of the month. This
meeting meets at the Mansfi eld Manor Hotel at 6.30pm for a sit down dinner followed by speaker(s) on a business subject and close of meeting at 8.00pm. All visitors will be made very welcome.County Battery.County Battery Services is a family-run business, established in 1974, with over 37 years experience and expertise in servicing customer requirements within the battery industry.Ideally located in the centre of the country with branches in the midlands, which provides easy access to the whole of the UK. County Batteries stock batteries for all applications including modern and classic cars, commercial vehicles, plant, motorcycles, industrial, mobility, emergency, alarm, cordless phones, digital cameras, and battery-operated toys - if it has a battery we can supply it!County Battery Services also stocks a range of chargers, test equipment for all types of batteries, automotive bulbs and other battery accessories. Whiplash Adds £118 to Each Car Insurance Premium
Following reports from leading insurer Aviva that whiplash claims are adding money to our car insurance premiums, it has been revealed that 94% of drivers now blame third parties for
increased car insurance premiums. The recent research of over 2000 drivers has revealed that almost 2 in 3 think that people seek compensation to get money to spend on whatever they choose rather than rehabilitation. Indeed this view is supported by Aviva’s research of almost 400 UK drivers who have made a Personal Injury claim which found that only 33% of people spent their cash compensation on medical treatment or physiotherapy. Others said that it was used to pay off household debit (29%), to by luxury items such as TVs (12%) or to go on holiday (9%).Jennifer from Midlands Insurance Services voices concern at the growing level of car insurance premiums. “Rising premiums make the customer unhappy and most UK drivers want to see an end to a perceived ‘personal injury’ compensation culture.”
“Ministry Of Justice Reforms due to be in place by August 2013 are aimed at tackling the compensation culture and will involve making lawyers cost proportionate, claimants having to settle their own costs, and banning referral fees, which should all help
to tackle the problem at source.”Jennifer Needham is Business Development Manager for Midlands Insurance Services and an IWB Silver Specialist.
Some general tips for what to do if you have an accident
Take a photo on your mobile phone Take the other party’s details (they are required to give you these under the Road Traffi c Act) and if they won’t give you their details, take their number plate and vehicle make/model and report to your Insurer. Report the incident to your Insurer immediately Take any witnesses contact details. Don’t admit liability even if you think the accident is your fault– most people don’t realise that your Insurer requires you to do this, as they will establish who is liable. Only call the police if somebody is injured. Once you’ve taken a photo and provided there are no injuries, you are free to move your vehicles to the side of the road for recovery. If somebody brakes suddenly in front of you for no reason, or you suspect that it might be a ‘cash for crash’ scenario, tell the police and your insurer immediately.

When Serco Leisure Apprentice, Matthew Robson left the Dukeries
College in New Ollerton in 2011 he had studied hard and achieved 10 GCSE’s and 3 ‘A’ Levels in Leisure, IT and Business Studies. These have proved invaluable over the last 18 months. Matthew explains:
How did you get your fi rst job?
Having not achieved the grades I required to entre the better HE establishments I recognised that gaining real work skills and knowledge could benefi t me as greatly as attending University.
Not one to rest on my laurels, I converted my part time position at McDonalds that had helped to fund my Sixth form Studies into a full time post gaining experience in Customer Service skills in particular. Having attended ‘Next Step’ and gained information and guidance I opted to pursue an Apprenticeship as I believed this would allow me to gain both qualifi cations and job skills while earning a wage. I had interviews with various apprenticeship agencies having searched the National Apprenticeship Service website to research positions available to my local area. I targeted both Business Administration and Leisure as these were related to my ‘A’ level qualifi cations.
After several rejections, I fi nally secured a position as a Leisure Assistant at Water Meadows Swimming & Fitness Complex studying an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Leisure Operations.
Did you get the job there and there then?
The process involved an Initial Assessment, which included verbal reasoning, numerical and logic. Having done well in this I progressed to a fi nal interview with Mark Welch Operations Manager and Steve Baker Commercial Manager who were able to inform me more about the position.
When did you actually start?
I was taken on in August 2012 and began my Apprenticeship Studies. The experience I have gained over the last 7 months includes roles as a Leisure Assistant which include cleaning and set up and take down of equipment, but also
working on reception dealing with customers. I was also involved in doing some Business Administration work with the tills. I created an interim stock taking spreadsheet while awaiting more formal software and trained other staff on how to use this. I have also learnt how to use a till software ‘Legend’ and have again acted as a mentor for other staff to help develop their knowledge and skills with Legend.
What has happened since?
I have gained other qualifi cation
during my Apprenticeship, most recently completing a National Pool Lifeguard Qualifi cation funding by Serco Vocational Training which will allow me to offer more fl exibility to my employer as I can work on poolside as a lifeguard in addition to my other roles. My employer has also invested in me as I am currently completing my L2 Gym Instructors Certifi cate, enhancing my employability and CV further.
Is it all work and no play for Matthew?
No I work hard but play hard. I play 5-a-side football recreationally on a regular basis with a group of friends. I also play English pool and have competed in league competitions in the past.
A word from the employer…
“Matt has been a real asset to our organisation. His ICT skills have really added to the experience of our Front of House team and had signifi cantly improved customer service levels. Matt has been self motivated and enthusiastic working alongside the existing team. In fact Matt has been so successful we have created a job for him”.
A word about the future…
Matt is due tom complete his Apprenticeship at the end of July and his thoughts are turning to the future. Having been a success in the workplace Matt
is in the happy position now of having options. He has gained many Industry specifi c qualifi cations but also many transferable skills and with his strong skills and background in Leisure, Business and IT he can choose to develop his career within Leisure or use this experience as a stepping stone to new ventures.
About Serco Leisure & Serco Vocational Training
Serco manages the infrastructure, assets and staff of over 70 leisure facilities on behalf of Sport England, Local Authorities, Community Leisure Trusts, Universities and MoD Facilities. Serco is committed to supporting the drive to increase Apprenticeship opportunities and bringing service to life.

Their goal is to deliver high quality on the job training, in a motivating and supportive manner to add value to learners in a large range of skill sectors.

Your ISA allowance – a wasted opportunity? In the current environment of low interest rates, low economic growth and modest but persistent infl ation, savers and investors need to make the most of every opportunity to maximise the returns on their money. Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) represent just such an opportunity; yet many people are wasting the valuable tax-saving advantages and investment potential provided by their annual ISA allowance.
ISAs were introduced by the government in 1999, in the midst of the stock market dot-com bubble, replacing PEPs and cash-based TESSAs as the latest scheme to encourage people to save and invest for their future in a tax-effi cient way. For many years the amount that could be invested in an ISA each tax year was limited to £7,000. But this has since increased; up to £11,280 can be invested in this tax year, and the allowance is due to rise each year in line with infl ation. From 6 April it will increase to £11,520. The catch with the annual ISA allowance is that if you don’t use it, you lose it.
There are two types of ISA: Cash ISAs are savings accounts where the interest is paid tax-free and Stocks & Shares ISAs, as the name suggests, that allow investment into a wider range of stock market and other fi nancial instruments. The attraction of a Stocks & Shares ISA is that both income and capital gains attract no further tax liability. However, there are restrictions on how much can be invested in each type. The full annual allowance can be invested in a Stocks & Shares ISA, but only half the allowance - £5,640 this year – can be saved in a Cash ISA, although the balance of the allowance can still be invested in a Stocks & Shares version. Of course, the favourable tax treatment given to ISAs is subject to changes in legislation and may not necessarily be maintained in future.
Undoubtedly, ISAs have been a success story. Over £390 billion has been invested
across all ISA types since their launch. Cash ISAs represented 49% of all ISA accounts opened in the fi rst year. Yet, despite interest rates remaining at record lows, Cash ISAs accounted for a huge 80% of total applications in the last tax year, refl ecting almost certainly the increased risk aversion prompted by the fi nancial crisis in recent years. As a result, over 16.5 million people hold a total of £200 billion in Cash ISAs (source: HMRC, September 2012).
But there is a sting in the tail. The squeeze on savers from record-low interest rates
is also being felt by those with Cash ISAs. Figures from the Bank of England
in December showed that the average Cash ISA deposit rate is just 0.65%. The interest rate on the best-buy Cash ISA has fallen below 3% for the fi rst time since 1999. Furthermore, only two Cash ISA accounts currently pay a rate that beats infl ation (source: Moneyfacts, January 2013). That a huge chunk of £200 billion in savings is failing to beat infl ation is a stark illustration of how this rare tax-saving opportunity is being wasted.
The reality is that the tax benefi ts provided by ISAs are best maximised by investing for the long term in assets capable of achieving capital growth and rising income. The likelihood is that interest rates will remain very low for a number of years to come and, regrettably, savers cannot even be sure that their Cash ISA account is achieving a better rate than a standard deposit account. Against that backdrop, whilst cash is certainly the right home for money that might be needed in the short term, ISA allowances might be better utilised by investing in a diversifi ed portfolio of assets that have the scope to deliver higher levels of income and long-term capital gains and, in doing so, make the most of the tax freedom on returns. Of course, investors need to bear in mind that the value of a Stocks & Shares ISA may fall as well as rise and it does not provide the
security of capital associated with a Cash ISA.
As well as considering the best use of this and future years’ ISA allowances, those who have already built up signifi cant ISA funds might be able to improve the income and capital returns on offer. All too often, people do not review their ISA portfolio strategy frequently enough. How are the investment managers performing? Is the asset mix, geographic spread or fund choice still right for them? Can they improve the income-generating potential of their ISA portfolio? Are they happy with the service they’re receiving?
A thorough review of an ISA portfolio by an experienced wealth manager can ensure that it is appropriately structured and diversifi ed to help achieve immediate or future fi nancial goals. ISAs should be a cornerstone of fi nancial planning, but it is also important to consider them in the context of an overall investment strategy and to ensure that an ISA portfolio can be
adjusted easily to cater for changing needs.
As a fi nal thought, parents,
grandparents, and indeed anyone who might want to help a child build capital for his or her future, should not overlook Junior ISAs, which were introduced in November 2011 to give under-18s a similar tax-effi cient savings opportunity. The limit for investment in this tax year is £3,600; but given the future fi nancial challenges faced by the children of today, any help will provide them with a valued head start.

April’s here. Yippee! I absolutely love the feeling that the trees are starting to bud and the bulbs are fi nally
displaying their prize blooms after a cold winter, interned in the hard ground.Spring always seems like such a sweet reward after the winter months – and this rather snowy year, has resulted in more people yearning for a bit of colour in our landscape than usual, I suspect. My job involves me talking to a wide variety of people in the Mansfi eld area and thinking back, the conversation always seems to start with something like, “let’s hope the better weather will be here soon” That brings me on to our gardens. As the daughter of two very committed gardeners, I was brought up in the 1970’s going to National Garden Scheme open days, helping my Dad to dig the carrot patch and pricking out seedlings in the greenhouse ready for that blaze of garden colour. As a child I seemed to infuse the latin names of plants, even though as a teenager, I would have described my parents’ hobby as ‘boring’.As an adult of course, I now look back very fondly on my Dad’s greenhouse operation which was so distinctive in smell, and so full of promise for the fertile season to come -
the paraffi n heater would be quietly chugging away and keeping the chill off the tender seedlings while the emerging sun, got stronger and coaxed the plants outside into the soil.My garden efforts nowadays tend to focus on what can be done quickly and will effectively counteract the damage the dog and children do to the infrastructure of the garden. Concentrating on pot arrangements, makes it as more of a tick-box exercise than a passion. I do however get a lot of pleasure from seeing the care that other people take with their gardens and know that here in Mansfi eld, there are many of us that are truly in love with our fl ora – a simple and natural way to express our creativity and embrace nature’s cycles. I relish the day when I too will have the time and resources to nurture my garden and really make the most of the Spring and Summer seasons as they arrive. Unsurprisingly on my bucket list, there’s a greenhouse .Jennifer Needham, BDM at Midland Insurance Services

Skincare tips for using sunscreen – when the sun shines that is!1. Always use a high, broad spectrum SPF (30 to 50) before you apply make-up. 2. Remove your make-up thoroughly each and every night. If you are being good and using sunscreen every day, removing your make up and skincare at the end of the day is essential. 3. Drink a glass of water every 2 hours. Set the alarm on your phone, put up post it notes, just don’t forget to hydrate. Sip water throughout the day and measure how much you are having. 4. Go lighter with your make-up. Think water-based formulas, tinted moisturisers, mineral make-up and of course BB creams. 5. Ditch the powder and instead go for matte type lotion under your make-up. These high tech formulas tackle the oily T-zone and
over-stimulated oil production at the source instead of powder that only adds to the problem.6. Spritz your face. A hydrating face spritz will keep your skin beautifully fresh and your make up will last longer. 7. Exfoliate your skin every second day with a gentle, non-abrasive face scrub to remove any dead skin cells and residue of sunscreen. 8. Use a face mask every week to hydrate and repair damage from sun, surf and late nights.9. Use an eye cream. This is not the time to skip important, skin saving routines. Eye cream will help keep your eyes in top shape. 10. Sleep tight. Back to back partying is a killer for creating skin stress. Sleep is still the number one way to refresh and beautify your skin. If you can’t get to bed early, try a siesta after lunch or a ‘disco’ nap before you go out.

Fashion: Sea To ShoreThis Year’s Bikini Wish ListCalling all colour fi ends,
this summer’s bikinis
are bright, bold and

it’s time to meet this year’s best bikini

high waisted briefs mix classic with fun.
Go for nostalgic vintage patterns in bold
candy stripes and oversize polka dots,
or minimise the kitsch with modern
colours and prints. Retro swimsuit

Feminine Frills. One of this
season’s key day-wear looks -
the minimal frill - has also found
its way into swimwear. Bringing a

designs, the frill is a modern way to
add detail. This neon bandeau bikini

The Cut-Away. When a

County Cricket Testing Loan
As part of a long established business relationship with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club,
Rushcliffe Borough Council, along with three other key partners (Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham City Council and East Midlands Development Agency) provided a £1.23m loan to ensure Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club was able to complete for and retain its Test Match status. The loan in 2008 was used to fi nance important ground improvements including the redevelopment of “The New Stand”, permanent fl ood lights, replaced score board and Test Match offi cial facilities. The investment by the four partners resulted in an immediate investment return as Trent Bridge was the only ground outside London to be utilised in the 2009 ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup. In respect of Rushcliffe, the loan was an essential element in our strategy to invest in both the local economy and community. The agreement reached with the Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club included the requirement for them to develop and deliver the Positive Futures programme, a project which has been nationally recognised as making a signifi cant contribution to reducing crime and social behaviour whilst improving the opportunities for young people in Cotgrave. Councillor Neil Clarke, Leader of the Council’s response:“In 2008, Rushcliffe Borough Council’s proportion of a loan
made in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham City Council and East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) was £1.23m. Following the magnifi cent result in reducing anti-social behaviour and crime within Cotgrave over a fi ve year
period, the programme also transformed and improved the opportunity of outcomes for many of the young
people of the Town. Therefore, we agreed – following a request from Nottinghamshire
County Cricket Club – to convert £450,000 of the original loan to grant and an additional commitment to convert a further £90,000 per annum for a maximum of four years
in exchange for the expansion and continuation of the Positive Futures project within Rushcliffe. This, we believe, represents excellent value for money whilst also assisting the Cricket Club in retaining its Test Match status in exchange for the provision of a nationally acclaimed community partnership which will continue to inspire, nurture and benefi t our young people. I fi rmly believe our approach will continue to maintain Trent Bridge’s world renowned reputation whilst continuing
the support for our local business community.”

Regular Feature: The Modern worldMy name is Anthony Scott and despite my youthful good looks passed down to me by Lord Byron himself, I have in fact lived in and around Mansfi eld for all of my 47 years. During this time I have seen the whole landscape that we once knew disappear before my very eyes. Many of you will remember the industries that used to be part and parcel of what our area was. This has now changed dramatically, some for the better and some not so.
One huge thing that is so very different is how we talk to one another. As a lad the best I could hope for to arrange those blissful late night meet ups was happening to be the playground at the right time in the right place to get the gen on the evenings entertainment. If I missed that due to an over zealous teacher demanding lines from me then I missed the whole nights fun! You would think using the home phone would have been an
option, but in our house asking for the use of the phone was akin to asking for a £50 note. Only emergencies counted and my meeting with the pals was not, in my father’s books, one such emergency.
Now with the arrival of such delights as Facebook, Twitter, mobile messaging and the rest, meeting up has never been so easy. I’m surprised any of us are ever in! The Jam in 1977 released a wonderful song called ‘This is the Modern World.’ It turns out it wasn’t! This is.
See you next time.
Anthony Scott is the MD of the Fiducia Group, a fi nancial services boutique based across the East Midlands. He is also the author of ‘On Ashover Hill’ and you can follow him on his site www.anthonyscott.co.uk
It's a park lifeGreen spaces across the Mansfi eld District have been given a spruce up as part of a £28,000 programme of investment.Over the winter months Mansfi eld District Council's Parks Department have been busy adding new features to Larkhills open space (off Holly Road) in Forest Town, Thompson's Grave between Southwell Road West and Berry Hill Lane, Rainworth open space off Southwell Road East and Warsop Road recreation ground in Mansfi eld Woodhouse.New features include new litter bins and seating, mixed perennial borders, new fencing, planting of trees and the creation of new footpaths. At Thompson's Grave (photo), the resting place of Charles Thompson* who was buried in 1784, new interpretation panels have also been installed. Work has been carried out to restore the ornamental gates to the grave area and open up
the entrance to the site, but retaining the original stones.
The projects have been funded by Section 106 money generated from developments in areas surrounding the green spaces.Cllr Philip Shields, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "Across the District there are some true hidden gems of open spaces, parks and nature reserves, providing opportunities for residents and visitors to play, relax and exercise. This project to enhance these areas will make them even more enjoyable for many."For more information about local parks, open spaces and nature reserves visit www.mansfi eld.gov.uk/parks

Film Review: Iron Man IIIDirector: Shane BlackRelease: 24th April
And so it goes on… Robert Downey Jr. returns as Tony
Stark aka Iron Man, although director Jon Favreau has departed the franchise with ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ director Shane Black picking up the reigns. Co-star Don Cheadle (Lt Rhodes/War Machine) promises more action and fun in the third in the series, also hinting at a return to the original offbeat character-driven style (rather than
the disappointing sequel, we hope). Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson are due to reprise their roles as Pepper Potts and Natalie Rushman respectively.
Book Review: Whiskey BeachNora RobertsReleased: 18th AprilEli Landon seems to have the perfect life. A beautiful wife, a wonderful house, a dazzling legal career. But when his wife is brutally murdered after confessing to an affair, Eli is named prime suspect - without a shred of evidence. After a year-long ordeal the case is dropped, but Eli’s world is in tatters.
Abandoned by his friends, hounded by the media and a detective with a grudge, Eli retreats to the small-town sanctuary of Whiskey Beach and Bluff House, his beloved grandmother’s home by the sea. Bluff House has belonged to the Landons for generations and is the perfect place for Eli to regain his strength and rediscover his fi rst love - writing. He is helped in his recovery by Abra Walsh - nurturing, courageous and a survivor herself. As Eli heals, he begins to open his heart to Abra, and for the fi rst time, dares to dream of a future.
But as Abra and Eli take their fi rst steps towards each other, a dangerous enemy is watching from the shadows. An enemy determined to make sure Eli Landon will never have that ‘perfect life’ - whatever the cost...ISBN-13: 978-0749958114 Amazon £10.19
SPRING POEM To you sweet fl owers, waken now,
Rise up your stems to sunlight,Bluebells ring out your chimes,
Your colour true, not white or pinkBut angels’ hue from sky be given.
Hawthorn, be it red or white and apple blossom fl owing,Will carpet paths with colour glowing
To those who’ve chanced upon these scenes,With eyes to wonder at these sights be given –
Will stop and look at them as if they are in Heaven.
Buttercup, a shade of gold so brightBut don’t take all the glory or colour,Share it with your kind for all to see.
Daisy, cuckoo pine, violet and dog-roseAre not second-best, as well you know.
To each its gift of rainbow’s colour,From Solfe the brook to river.
Arches will glow with pride, its gift to shareWith seeking eyes of lesser kinds,
A gift to humankind to cherish in lasting mind.
