In 1770, in a philosophical letter, the Irish and British politician Edmund Burke wrote:
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”.
Except that he probably didn’t and the exact source of this quote is as widely debated as to whether it was used 175 years later in the Nuremberg Trials. I know I was taught both at school and have had both corrected at me ever since.
What I did learn at school about those words and the trials of the Nazis at the end of the Second World War - the important lesson I took away - was of humankinds’ capacity for committing acts of pure horror upon each other.
Burke, or whoever, was absolutely right. When people have the integrity, the strength of character, the courage to speak up, to stand up, to challenge and to debate, the world is a better place. The moment we turn our back, drop our eyes, or pretend that it does not apply to us, is the day that the evil can start to creep in again.
First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me And there was no one left
To speak out for me
Martin Niemöller (1892–1984)
Niemöller’s poem is intentionally apologetic and remorseful. He was a staunch conservative and a supporter of Adolf Hitler in the 1930’s, until they started to ‘Nazize’ the protestant churches in which he was a pastor. His objections cost him his freedom and he was very lucky to survive being sent to the Sachsenhasuen and Dachau concentration camps as a ‘political’ prisoner. Over six million people did not survive: Jews, homosexuals, Poles, Soviets, Gypsies, politicals, the disabled and opposers of the Nazi regime.

Holocaust Memorial Day, this week, reminds us. This is why we study history, so that we might learn from the past and try not to make the same mistakes again. That is why I always implore young people to speak up, to stand up, to defend those in need, to argue for what is right. If the next generation is silent, then elements of my generation - greedy, jaded, self-interested and blinkered as all adults are capable of being - will allow the evils of the world to manifest themselves again. It is the role of the young, just as it always has been, to be society’s moral guardians. This generation has proved its metal in their activism around the environment and may now face the same challenge with global politics and the rise of the narrative of difference, the politics of hate, and the agenda of the ‘us’ and ‘them’.
We must take time this week to remember the six million who were murdered in the Holocaust, but also to reflect on what we can do to prevent anything like it happening again. My generation went some way yes, but arguably Bosnia, Rwanda, Syria, Darfur, Kurdish Iraq, East Timor and Myanmar to would suggest there is much work still to do.
“People are pretty much alike. It's only that our differences are more susceptible to definition than our similarities.”
Linda Ellerbee, American journalist Born August 1944, in the same week that they came for Anne Frank

Whilst we welcome face to face meetings with parents/carers we must kindly ask that appointments are made with members of staff prior to arrival on school site. Appointments are vital as they would be with your GP to ensure that a member of staff is available to see you. Please email [email protected] to make an appointment with staff, or you can contact your child’s teacher or form tutor by email. All staff emails are in the same format [email protected]. Please recognise that a teacher may have a full teaching day plus lunchtime clubs or commitments and meetings after school, so you should give them time to have read and be able to reply to your message. We ask staff to ensure that they get back to you within 48 hours. Neil Hassell
