Rising to the challenge laid down by their head of

house, Hirst House won the trophy that they had only narrowly missed out on the previous year. “They demonstrated a real competitive spirit throughout the year”, exclaims an overjoyed Mr Hunter. A massive contributing factor was also the number of students achieving exceptional Attitude to Learning grades

throughout the year. While congratulating all students who took part, Mr Hunter would like to

pay special thanks to the house captains. “We really did make the other houses green with envy.”

Nearly a third of all grades achieved by Mr Benson’s year were A*/A. A new record for the school.

Twelve students achieved a fantastic A*/A grades in all subjects:

One of the highlights of the year has been Samvir Thandi’s record breaking rocket car. A team of students from the Heathland visited Santa Pod Raceway in March to build and launch model rocket cars they had

been working on. It was hoped that they would beat their own previous record of 205mph. Samvir managed to smash this, clocking up a ratified speed of 287mph. The story will now be featured on the Discovery Channel, and his YouTube video has almost reached 100,000 hits!

STEM week allowed pupils from all year groups to

participate in a variety of exciting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics opportunities. Students built rockets, visited the Zoo Bus, and were

enraptured by main hall demonstrations all week. Teachers were keen to note how well students responded to the competitive and heavily practical setup in a number of sessions.

For the sixth year running, July saw eighteen dedicated

Year 12s travel to Mostar in Bosnia to work alongside the Our Kids charity, and enrich the lives of the orphans living in the children’s home there. The 13 day trip was a huge success, with exciting activities such as white water rafting, talent shows, and redecorating of the orphanage. All involved would like to pay special thanks to Mr Parfitt and Ms Cotterill for leading the action-packed and intensely rewarding trip.

Eastern evening was another colourful display of world culture, both traditional and modern. “The show seems to go from strength to strength,” says Eastern Evening producer Miss Thomas. “I was really impressed by the commitment and energy

shown during rehearsals,” says her assistant producer Miss Fleetwood, “and the evenings were a blast!” Both teachers paid particular tribute to the “fantastic dedication” of the K-Pop dance group, Zunaira Baig’s debut, and Urban Club. Next year certainly has a feat to live up to.

Sixth Form Prom

In true Heathland style, the sixth form prom was a delectably decked-out affair. A packed dance floor (rumoured to have included a body-popping teacher or two), sweet bar, and some very well dressed A-Level finalists proved the perfect recipe for an outstanding evening. Many thanks must go to Ms Cotterill and the prom committee for a roaring twenties party that would have done Jay Gatsby proud.

Summer School is a great opportunity for new Year 7s to get a feel for the Heathland before term begins. Over 100 pupils attended the eight day,

cross-curricular programme this year, in lessons that included Sports Science, STEM challenges, Music, French, Spanish, and Environmental Studies. Pupils said they really enjoyed the early opportunity to make new friends, and meet some of their teachers before term began.

Barcelona

Barcelona was a once in a lifetime opportunity. From beaches to town trips, we had the chance to do so many things. My personal favourites were the

banana boat and the Nou Camp. There we took selfies to our heart’s content, visiting the players’ changing rooms and the commentators’ box. Believe me: that is one of the best sights you will ever see. I would recommend the trip to anyone who likes sports in the slightest.Jack Harboard

Outward Bound

Heading into the wild for 4 days of camping, hiking,

canyoning and rock climbing doesn’t sound like the average school week. For the 25 students and accompanying teachers who would be erecting tents to sleep out in the Brecon Beacons national park some evenings, after hiking through the hills all day, it certainly wouldn’t be. One student called it “an exhilarating and life affirming experience.” It certainly sounds it.

In July, 52 pupils and 6 members of staff spent four

days in Paris. Full of exciting activities, the trip included climbing up the Tour de Montparnasse for amazing views of the city, and spending the day at Disney Land going on all the rides. A particular highlight was seeing the world famous Mona Lisa in the Louvre. Many thanks to Miss Haigh for organising such a great trip.

Charity week this year saw the school raise an impressive £12,200 for the charities React, Pump Aid, and Make A Wish UK. The school was full of sugary treats and pizza all week, and the main

hall packed out each lunchtime to see the Battle of the Bands and the sold out Strictly Come Bhangra events. Each of the charities sent keen thanks in response to our donations, and students were even lucky enough to be visited by a Pump Aid representative, who demonstrated the kind of equipment we were helping to provide less privileged people abroad.

Latin trip to Fishbourne Palace July 2014

The Latin pupils in years 8 to 13 got the opportunity to visit Fishbourne Palace

in Sussex in July. The students participated in a workshop on Roman life which included archaeological work and dressing up. Afterwards the students were able to explore the sites ancient remains: one of the finest examples of a Roman palace in Britain.

Stepping back into Renaissance England, the whole of Year 7 were given the opportunity to visit Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on the Southbank. Students spent the day in activity filled workshops and an interactive tour of the theatre. “I really helped us engage with Romeo and Juliet a lot more,” said one pupil during the brisk walk back to Waterloo.

Braving the elements, long 40km walks, your teachers abandoning you

in undisclosed locations: the Duke of Edinburgh pupils have been through it all this year. It’s helped us become better rounded people,” commented one student. Anna Percival in particular was celebrating her inclusion in the

Gold Award Forum – the first Heathlander to be given such an honour. A special thank you from the students goes to Mr Swift and all of the other teachers who have helped out on residentials this year.

Shakespeare Schools Festival

Gala Concert

The Heathland returned once more to trip the light fantastic at the Shakespeare Schools Festival this year. 25 English and Media A-Level students performed King Lear to a packed audience at

a professional theatre in Hampton. Original music from Joe Shafique and Daniel Rogerson really helped the students stand out, bringing the house down with applause. Special thanks must go to Miss Leslie and Ms Cotterill. And make sure to look out for a Heathland version of Othello later this year.

Placed earlier in the calendar this year, and no less impressively performed, Gala Concert was a very

fine evening to find oneself in the school’s main hall. The audience were treated to a host of different performance groups and genres. Mr Hunter’s acapella group and the Sixth Form drama performance stick in our minds particularly, but huge congratulations should go to all involved.

Sixth Form mock interviews

Former Heathlanders Dr. Paresh Mistry (Consultant at Hillingdon Hospital), Safian Younas (who qualifies next year as a doctor) and Jasneet Gulati (working as a qualified dentist in North London) conduct the interviews with Heathland teachers.

The Heathland continued to give students the best chance of attending the world’s top universities by staging mock interviews for students applying to Oxford and Cambridge, or applying to

Dentistry or Medicine. Students said that the realistic conditions made them feel much more comfortable with the prospect of university interviews, especially the detailed feedback.

One highlight of the travel calendar last year was the opportunity for A2 Physics students to visit

one of the great wonders of the scientific world: the Large Hadron Collider at the European Organisation of Nuclear Research. They travelled almost 90 metres below the ground to witness the CMS and ATLAS detectors along the LHC’s rim itself. As well as enhancing their knowledge of nuclear physics, they had the chance to explore Geneva, taking boat trips around Lake Genève, and visit the United Nations European Headquarters.

It’s been an exciting year for the Art Department. The annual A-level, GCSE Art/Photography and Fashion

Exhibition this year was very well turned out. Students were given a wide range of opportunities to go on trips including the First Thursday East London Art Galleries,

Saatchi Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and V&A. Perhaps most excitingly, the Art on the Underground 150 Years Celebration resulted in artworks inspired and created by Heathland G&T students displayed in Hounslow East. These will be seen by up to 8000 students a day.

In the Summer term, a small group of Year 8 pupils visited Brooklands Museum, the self-styled birthplace of

motorsport and aviation. There students were given special permission to try out the F1 Simulator, and even a Harrier Jump Jet. It was a valuable experience for all involved, far removed from the traditional hands-off museum approach

Production – Crumpled Classics

Following on from last year’s Jason and the Argonauts, Heathland students staged Crumpled Classics in the Spring term. A feast of well-known tales, such as Sherlock Holmes and Romeo and Juliet, were given their own original Heathland spin by Miss Thorne’s script. The variety of in-jokes and allusions split the sides of the audience, allowing them to feel right at home. The Headmaster was keen to applaud the cast, made up from students in every school year. Look out for another classic plot with a real urban twist later in the year.

No stranger to grand occasions, Olympic, Commonwealth and World gold medallist Jonathan Edwards took to our main hall podium earlier in the year to speak at Year 11 Prizegiving. Mr Edwards, holder of the World Record for Triple Jump since 1995, joins a long line of big names from the sporting world who have presented the ceremony. He commended the hard work and determination of Mr Benson’s year group, and shared motivating stories from his own sporting career to spur them on.

Staff Netball: West London Champions

There is also success to report at the front of the classroom. In December, the Staff Netball Team were crowned West London champions. The team is made up of teachers from a number of different school departments. Practising what they preach, they have continued their hard work through the rest of the school year, trouncing members of the male staff each week in the yellow courtyard. They will hope to defend their title this year. The Y8 Team: (L-R) Manaal Pasha (Sh), Kaya Simon (Ho),

Jasmine Abdulai (Di), Egle Aukstuolyte (Sh), Sarastina Oliveira Sivaratnam (Ho), Nikola Bernat (Je), Rashika Umanthasan (Ke), Sharan Phull (Ke), Yasmin Dawoodjee (Je), Khadija Aziz (Pa)

The Year 10 Cricket team were unbeaten in the league for a second season running this year. Hoping to pair their Borough Championship with more silverware, they even managed to show enough endurance and consistency to make a serious

national cup run. Despite excellent teamwork all round however, Teddington pipped past them in the quarter final by a mere 3 runs.

The Year 11 Team: (L-R) Harina Khaneja (Pa), Rasna Sandhu (Tu), Salwa Anguparu (Pa), Sanika Nair (Je), Karishma Yadav (Pa), Seth Sorano (Je), Bhavya Meda (Je), Selai Saydzai (Sh), Bahara Haidari (Ke) and Merlyin Skaria (SH)

Double Rounders success

There was trophy success for both the Year 8 and Year 11 Rounders teams this year, who became Hounslow Borough champions and champions of April’s Senior Tournament respectively. The Year 8s, whose victory involved beating a number

of talented local rivals, will be hoping to emulate their older counterparts. This Year 11 team were Borough Champions every year since Year 7.

Netball team narrowly miss out

The Year 9 Netball Team entered the National JCA Netball Tournament in Shropshire during the Spring term. As the only state school attending, they faced some very tough competition, but triumphed to win all their matches in the lead up to a very tense final round. Despite a painful 6-5 loss in the final, they are determined to use the experience gained to go one better in the coming year.

“Despite the sunburn, Barbados was a thrilling experience,” wrote Lewis Gallifent (9Ke) in our previous Heathlander update, and it certainly was. This year’s cricket and netball tour was a great success. In spite of the giant turtles, ship wrecks and time in the pool, the teams even allowed the school to add to our total of international match wins. The students were all very grateful to Mr Dexter, Mrs Benedict, Miss Fleetwood and Mr Trendell for their time and company on tour.

College des Iris students welcomed

There was one week last year when the school seemed to

be a bit more vocal than usual. When students the College des Iris arrived to visit the school meet their pen friends and find out more about school life in England, Heathland pupils from a variety of years seemed much keener to great each other with

a ‘bonjour’ or two in the corridor. The visitors were given a friendly and action-packed Heathland welcome, and providing a fantastic practical opportunity to practise our spoken French. It wasn’t all a success however: College des Iris students will certainly need to work on their cricketing skills if they’re thinking of making a return visit.
