Can I please ask that you speak to your children to ensure that they will not take any risks at these traffic lights and ensure that there is nothing coming before they take the decision to cross the road – even when the lights tell you to go. I have personally noticed motorists speeding along this road and being unable to stop in time for a red light so this is very important. The same applies to cyclists please as we have many pupils who cycle to school. I would also be pleased to see more pupils wearing cycle helmets too for head protection. How can you help further? I have been in contact this week with Swindon Borough Council (SBC) to request a survey on the safety of the crossing on Queens Drive and I was met with a less than satisfactory response regarding time frames to do this. I consider the safety of your children of paramount importance so I hope you will join me in contacting the Roads Dept. at SBC to lobby for this survey and ultimately to have significant signage on this section of the road to alert motorists to the presence of a school and children crossing. The more of us that can do this, the better. I will of course be continuing to contact them on a weekly basis for a progress update. I don’t want us to be in a position of a serious accident taking place before they take notice. Thank you for your help. The Headteacher’s Weekly Newsletter Sandra Muir Headteacher

It is essential that we ensure the information we hold about you and your child is accurate and up to date in order for us to support pupils at school. We are currently sending out the data collection sheets for parents/carers to check and complete. Year 11s have already been sent home, Year 7s will be sent out the start of next week then the following years the week after. We ask that all parents/carers check these forms and:

• Amend the Data Collection Sheet with any information that has changed. • Please supply a mobile phone number we can use in special circumstances, for example, notification

of an unexpected school closure. • Please supply the email address you want used in home-school correspondence, for example, school

letters. Please note only one email address of a parent is required per pupil. • Sign the Data Collection Sheet at the bottom to let us know that you have seen it. • Return the Data Collection Sheet to the main office within two weeks.

Open Enterprise Challenge

It’s just 4 weeks away for our next open enterprise challenge, which will be run in the October half term – Monday 29th Oct to Friday 2nd Nov, 10.00am-4.00pm in central Swindon. For this one, the participants will experiment with a range of creative techniques (painting, drawing, spray paint, sculptures etc.) to produce a piece of urban art that will then be judged by a local artist, gallery owner and art retailer. The skills learnt will be everything from creative techniques to how they could potentially make money from their creative abilities by spotting a niche and marketing their creations commercially. The challenge is entirely free as always, and open to participants aged 13 to 24. It provides a great confidence building, employability skills and CV building experience, as well as an opportunity for those particularly interested in the creative arts and expressing themselves through hands on techniques. Attached at the end of this Newsletter is an information flyer which has a bit more detail on what they would be doing, the dates, and how people can apply, but I would be incredibly grateful if you could forward it to anyone that you think might be interested in participating directly. Places are limited to 10 people, so to reserve your place email [email protected] Thanks for all your support, Caireen Young [email protected]

Dear Year 7 Parents, We have now arrived at the point where we will be issuing all of our Year 7s with their lanyards and cards for cashless catering on Monday 8th October during assembly. The lanyards will be issued in house colours, which will help to drive our new emphasis on house identity and the cards will be used to put cash onto accounts in school in the cash machines, and pay for food, snacks and drinks at the canteen. Parents can, of course, put money into pupil’s accounts via Parent Pay. Lanyards will be considered part of the Lawn Manor Academy uniform and, as such, pupils will be expected to wear their lanyards during the normal school day and in lessons. Practical subjects will not require pupils to wear lanyards where it might get in the way – e.g. PE and cooking. Normal consequences will apply if pupils are not wearing their lanyards in school. If lost, replacement lanyards and / or cards can be purchased from main reception for £1 each item. Employment Pathway

The Employment Pathway with Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. This week we were taught to use Kelly Kettles and made a hot drink. We had to learn safety rules so that we did not burn ourselves and the correct technique to start fires and use the Kelly Kettle. All of us managed to start a fire using a fire strike. Sammy Harris even managed it with a flint and steel. We have started a diary to record our work and this will help us gain The John Muir Award which is like the Duke

of Edinburgh Bronze Award.

Computer Science trip to University of Reading on Monday 1st October On Monday Miss Harris took a group of Year 9 and 10 pupils to University of Reading for a Micro:bit masterclass and a tour of the campus. Here’s what our students had to say: Tanbir Khan I think Micro:bit was great, we learnt so much about coding, cracking, solving and keeping your password safe and more. The best thing I learnt was where we threw Micro:bit ducks at each other. Peter Harris The University of Reading was an amazing place that has a large area of space. I learnt how to crack into accounts and Micro:bits and we learnt about coding. I would recommend going there to study, we got shown around the university and found out there is also a nursery there. I enjoyed the teleporting ducks where you connect the Micro:bits then shake them to teleport to another Micro:bit.

Kristian Wiles The trip was phenomenal. Absolutely amazing. We did a bit of coding on the Micro:bit and some other types of coding. The tour was amazing too! It’s like a little town! I really do recommend going to the University, everything was fun! It was the best university to go to.

Kyle Sarahs We learned how easy it is to hack other devices. The best thing was that we got to use Micro:bits to try and find a special key to ring a doorbell. I would recommend going there, the staff are very kind and there’s everything you need such as co-op, library and even a pharmacy.

Lawn Manor Academy – Inspiring and Creating Futures for All

Proud to be part of the Royal Headteacher: Sandra Muir / CEO: George Croxford Wootton Bassett Academy Trust Salcombe Grove, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN3 1ER Company Number: 07569743 T. 01793 487286 E. [email protected] W. lawnmanor.org

October 2018

Dear Parents and Carers

The Government provides additional money to schools to help children from lower income families do their very best. This funding is called a ‘Pupil Premium’.

For every child registered, Lawn Manor will get extra money to support pupils.

With this money we could invest in further support for your child. We use Pupil Premium funding in a wide variety of ways – to fund extra tuition, mentoring, smaller class sizes and lots of additional opportunities. To find out more, please visit our website (www.lawnmanor.org). If your child is registered for Free School Meals you could also get support with the cost of school trips (both local and residential), support with the purchase of uniform, and support with the purchase of books and resources.

Please register as soon as possible to make sure your child and others in their class do not miss out.

How does it work?

Did you know … just registering your child for Free School Meals means

that the school gets extra money?

Register now to make sure we don’t miss out on funding to support your

child.

1.First, check if you qualify – it is not just if you are unemployed, so please look at the list on the next page. 2.Registering is really quick and easy – if you think you qualify come and visit us in school and speak with main reception who can provide you with the relevant forms, or alternatively visit http://www.swindon.gov.uk/schoolmeals and apply online. 3.If you want your child to have a free, healthy meal at lunchtime they will get the free meal (saving you more than £350 a year), extra benefits, and the school gets more money to support students. 4. If you don’t want your child to have the school meals they can continue as normal – as long as you qualify and are registered, the school still gets extra money to support pupils. 5.No one will know you have registered and it will not affect any other benefits you are claiming. All pupils use Cashless Catering – this means pupil no longer have to sign for their meal, so no one else is aware that they are claiming Free School Meals.

Page 10: The Headteacher’s Weekly Newsletter - Lawn Manor Academy · 2019-09-14 · Enterprise Challenge It’s just 4 weeks away for our next open enterprise challenge, which will be run
