Inside This Issue
Hello Lydia Hawk
November – A time for giving thanks!
I want to thank all the students, parents and family members who attended Boo Bingo on the 19th. This is a great Lydia Hawk tradition that is truly fun for the whole family. It also raises funds for commu-nity events throughout the year. Thanks so much to our PTA for making Boo Bingo a suc-cess!
“Circling Salmon Cele-bration” is the title of the new water reservoir here at school. The huge, beautiful salmon paintings were created by several of our 6th grade students. The art was painted by a local mural artist this sum-
mer. On November 2, the students and com-munity will have the opportunity to add their personal touch by making a colorful hand print on the tower. Thanks to John Pirie and the Thurston County PUD for orga-nizing this great addi-tion to our school com-munity.
Conferences Parent-teacher conferences are coming up in early No-vember. This is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and set goals for the year. We appreciate all your support. We are aiming for 100% atten-dance.
Our Veterans Day As-sembly is Friday, No-vember 9 at 9:10 AM.
We are inviting students to submit a picture of a family member in the military, active or re-tired. The photo will be copied and shared as part of a presentation at the assembly. Parents are invited to attend this important assem-bly. If you plan to at-tend, please let your child’s teacher know.
I also want to thank all of you for collaborating with us to make Lydia Hawk an excellent place to learn and grow. We really appreciate your support!
Here’s wishing you a
wonderful Thanksgiv-
ing !

the “nothing to do” blues? Help is here! Go to the North Thurston website (www.nthurston.k12.wa.us). Click on Family Re-
sources then Mathematics then look on the left side of the page
and click on Students.
This site will take you to many, many fun and educational games that will teach and entertain your child. There are games appro-
priate for a variety of ages and abilities.

Green team Green Team wrapped up the fall session with a tasty feast. Students
cooked and ate foods from recipes they had researched. All the food
was grown in the Lydia Hawk garden or will grow in the spring; sau-
teed kale, homemade potato chips, baked pota-
toes and fruit salad. Each week during the fall,
students harvested, weeded, and transplanted
garden plants. Many worms and other garden
inhabitants were also encountered while work-
ing outside. We have been lucky to have an
Americorps volunteer, Morgan Lord who opens
the garden to all students each Thursday during
recess and helps with Green Team .

5th grade water
quality testing
Fifth graders checked out the quality of
t w o l o c a l
streams last
week, Woodland
and Woodard
Creeks, and
learned about
stream health as
part of our on-
going study of
aquatic ecosys-
tems. The students worked very carefully
performing chemical tests on water sam-
ples and surveying the land around the
creeks. We really appreciate the parent
and community help we had! We will con-
tinue our studies with a trip to see chum
salmon spawning at Kennedy Creek on
November 14.
Elk’s Nat’l Hoop
Shoot Contest
Many boys and girls in grades 3-6 have signed
up to compete in this year’s Hoop
Shoot. During a P.E. class, con-
testants will shoot foul shots to
determine a boy and girl winner
in three different age groups.
School winners from each age
group, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 year olds will move
on to compete in the Lacey City Champion-
ships on Saturday, December 15th. Winners
from the city shoot off can move on to Lodge,
District, State, Regional and National Champi-
onships, all sponsored and paid for by the
Elks. The Gym has been open during lunch
recesses to provide practice opportunities for
all. Our school contest will begin soon. Good
luck to all Hoop Shoot contestants!

4th grade food bank
Service project
The fourth grade classes are working on their first community service pro-ject of the year. Our teachers feel that it is important for our students to give to our community. Students will have an opportunity to volunteer their time at the Thurston County Food Bank organizing and stocking food that is coming in. During the year, our fourth graders will have many opportunites to give back. Go
fourth grade!
