Honolulu, I.alixina and perhajis places,so as to be literally a drug. There are in

this city proliably not less than one thousandmango trees, which on an average at

ing to le found in the garden of the lateCaptain Adams at Kalihi. Its trunk measuresbetween eight and nine feet in circumference, though its height is the same as otherfull grown mango trees. This is the mother ofall the common mango fruit on the islands. There was a very old in Manini's garden, which is probably still living ; but it gen-

erally conceded the one in Captain Adam'spremises is the parent tree.

Some twenty-fiv- e years ago, Captaincommanding an English war vessel, brought afew seeds of the M'lzigong mango Bom-lia- y,

India, and them to Mr. Wylie,Minister of foreign affairs. One of these seedswas planted by Capt. Adams, and another byMr. W. Jarrett, both of which have attained ma-

turity, and are now loaded with fine fruit, whichdiffers from common in size, flavor, andappearance. It is larger, measuringusually from nine to twelve inches in circum-

ference. The flavor much superior thecommon kind, the skin quite thin and the meatvery and sweet. The shape is different, generally and more round, while the tiphas a peculiar curling termination.

Seven ago we met a native fruit ped-

dler in street, who had some unusually-larg- e

mangoes, which we bought expressly for

the seeds. These we planted and have now sixtrees growing from them, one of which hasborne fruit two years, nearly all of which havebeen of enormous size for mangoes, measuringfrom fsw to thirteen inch's, the largest weighing

There also growing here a sour or sub--acid mango, known as the Chulitey, which somerelish, and which doubtless was brought herefrom the East Indies. We have been informed by a gentleman livingat Kalihi, that on the suggestion of a Frenchnaturalist, he drove iroa splits into hismango tree, tbe result of which has been thatthe quality of the fruit is entirely changed forthe better, and there it none of the turpentine

French traveler stated that this plan waspracticed in the Kast Indies, with beneficial

results, and he thought the same resultswould be obtained here.

School l nitilniiIion

The present month ends the scholastic yearin nearly all our schools, and most of them

closes with examinations, which indicate the

preajreaa made by the pupils connected withthem.

The first in order was that of the Pohukainaschool, on Punchbowl street, the of pends upon the skill and watchfulness of

Misses Convey and Dudoit. The scholars anall girls, and it was pleasant to notice theirneatness of dress andjgood behavior, which re-

flect credit on their teachers as well as them-

selves. The recitations passed off creditably, and the answers were generally prompt, show- -

j ing that the pupils understood what wastaught.

Wednesday followed the examination ofthe Koval School, under the care of Kev. Mr.

M'Intosh. This school, owing to the closingof one or two others duripg the year, has in-

creased in numbers and appears to be over-

crowded. Notwithstanding the large roll of

120 scholars, in the two departments, it wasv. rt evident that the same thorough trainingnoticed on previous examinations has been keptup. This could be observed in the quick re-

sponses, particularly in mental arithmetic, when very complicated questions were correct-

ly answered with such promptness as to excitethe surprise of spectators. Another most de-

cided improvement was observed iu the read-

ing of English, showing the thoroughness of

the master's discipline. This last remarkmay also apply equally to the fohukainaschool. In Mrs. Kinney's department an in-

teresting siiolling match was given, in whichabout 30 pnpils were tested, all but one ofwhom were forced to retire, and he carried of!

the prize, a gilt bible well earned. On Thursday, the Fort street school, under

the care of Mr. Iteokwith and Miss Flora Wood,

passed a very fair examination. The pupilsnumber 63, and among them arc some verybright young lads. Their proficiency was welltested in a spelling match, of words written on

the blackboard. Of 420 words written out, only50 mistakes occurred. This is really the fairest way to conduct spell ing watches, and showsthe greatest skill.

The examination at Kawaiahao Female Sem-

inary on Wednesday attracted, as usual, a

large number of visitors, who listened for sev-

eral hours with interest unabated to the reci-

tations, singing, and dialogues. The exerciseswere conducted a lanai, in the open lawninnuka of the school premises, which arrangc-- :went gave ample room to the guests. Pro-

grammes written out by tho pupils were pro-

vided, and we counted twenty-fo- ur differentexercises on the list, and were appalled by thenumber ; but the judicious variety and theshortness of each lesson obviated the usual te- -

diousness of school examinations. The neat- -i

ness of attire and the quiet, correct deportmentof the scholars have always been a noticeablefeature of this school, and as we listened to theintelligent answers to questions in Geography,Arithmetic, Physiology, scripture lessons &c,we were impressed with the amount of laliornecessarily exended to produce such results. This has devolved mainly for the last fewmonths on Miss Ingraham and her young as- -sistants, Miss Mosely and Miss King; MissBingham having been incapacitated by

from taking he usual part of the burden.Tho irvmnastie and solfee-tri- exercises were thegreat the and

published concerning this novel vessel that itway worth while to give some accurate de-

tails in regard to her. From a recent articley'ature we gather that the chief object herdesigners, were they lieen

tion. It was at first intended by Mr. Bessemerto keep the floor of the saloon level by means

an automatic apparatus which involved boththe principle the gyroscope and that of Ba-

ker's mill. Certain practical difficulties, have led him abandon thtt idea,

adopt a more simple and inexpensive plan. The method ultimately adopted is a hydraulicapparatus, consisting of two powerful

It is only natural that people should desireto know something of the personality of thosewho in any way become famous or noted bytaking a leading part in important affairs.

Here, for example, by a combination ofand moral force, assisted by circumstan-

ces of which he adroitly took advantage, a

member of the National Legislature holdingits session in Versailles has succeeded in hav-

ing the French Republic declared and placediu process of immediate organization. Thequestion arises, Who is the Monsieur Wallon

who has done this ? whence came he ? Hav

ing already been made a member of PresidentMacmahon's Ministry, are his education capa-

city, and experience such as give him a fairchance of winning public approbation anddoing public good in that responsible position ?

In a word, there is a natural desire to knowM. Wallon is likely to take a lead in

the future political action of the NationalAssembly. By instituting the Republic, whichhas been done on his motion, the XatioualAssembly has pninouneed its own virtual ab-

dication ol" that positive sovereignty which ithas asserted and exercised since its first meet-

ing at Bordeaux as a legislative body, on Feb-

Monsieur Wallon's name is pronounced Val-lo- n

history, and soon distinguished himself as a

teacher in that department of letters. 1810,

in his twenty-eigt- h year, he was promoted, being appointed assistant to, or rather substi-

merly. It is reported that a thousand dollarshave been thereby made by a single person atKula, and there is no good reason to doubt thereport. A feast, recently held in Hamakua, inaid of a Church, was poorly attended, because, unlike the generality of native feasts now-a-da-

it was " dry." If serious evils have al-

ready resulted from the liquor distillation, itcan lie foreseen that, with its increase likethe case of the camel, which put its head intoan Arab's tent, and afterwards got its wholebody in, and could not be persuaded to go out,

the monster of intemperance may yet effectsuch an entrance amongst the natives, that ournot too powerful government cannot exorcisehim.

It has been gravely argued by intelligentpersons, that the licensing of an establishmentat Wailuku, for the wholesale of ardent spirits, would break up this illicit distillation. Per-

haps it would be well at the same time to

license an establishment for inoculation withleprosy, scrofula and other diseases, in orderto thus prevent their prevalence in the com-

munity. It has been bitterly maintained by others,

that laws against the use of ardent spirits bythe natives were an illiberal legislation ; andthat also the outcry against the sale of molas-

ses to the native manufacturers of " swipes,"was interference with legitimate trade. Thismatter will be understood by viewing it in thelight of the fact that leaialatloD to protect fromovert wrong-doinj- ; is not perversive of liberty, butrather essential to it. Miss Adelaide M tiler, tbe Hawaiian songstress, wasthe beroluc, a short time prior to her departure forSan Francisco, of an adventure, perhaps, unlike anyrecorded In the wildest production of fancy , certain-

ly nothing of cqnal romance has been mado public.Miss Miller was on a visit to some friends at Wal-klkl- ,

a celebrated watering place near Honolulu, andalso notej as tbe summer residence of the Hawaii-

an Klugs. It Is s great place fur surf bathing -al-

every hour of tbo day during the season shoalsol duskr figures belna: visible balutnic sniuuif Ihebreakers. Tho waters uear.tlio shore are consideredsafe, but outside ol the reel arc tabooed, on accountof tbe shark, wbicuauouiid Iu immcusu numbera.Wo to tbc daring swimmer that veulures that far.

Once beyond tbe reef he may aa well make bis willIn favor of tbo nearest Bats, for bis fate Is aa certainas the deplellou of a friendless toper's exchequer by

tbc voracloQS sharks ot a police court. One day Misa Miller was enjoying asurf bath with

a number of her companions. Like most of tbe isl-

anders, she Is amphibious, as much at home In wa-

ter as upon land,;swimi. In fact like a Ash, and has a

national reputation as a diver. While so engaged, one girl prop - they should swim out to tbc reef.

The suites! iou was not followed, fear of the mon-

sters there abouoding beta: tbe excuse. Tbia didnot intimidate the girl who made tbe proposition. She resolved to go thither herself, ami finally ban-

tered her companions into following her example. As tbey approached tbe reef a canoe passed theul, the natives euouliug, " Mano Mano!" (shark!shark!) also anriug them to hasten to the canoe forsafety. But, before the terrified girls could moveone way or the other, a huge blue abnrit surged Inamong them, and, rising la thejsurface, lifted Misa

Miller out ol tbe water. In ber terror she graspedone of the shark's upper litis. This proceeding, aswell as the burden upon its back seemed to terrifytbc inoostcr.'fur it darted off at a speed that wouldeasily outstrip tbu fastest ship, keeping however, upon tbe surface of tho water, tt kept along at thispace for tbout ilxty yards, still bearing tbe Hawaii-

an naiad upon Its back, when it suddenly plungeddownward, forcing the fair rider to let go ber hold, and leaving ber unscathed after her perilous advent-

ure. Sbe was soon picked up by tbc canoe, and, with her companions, returned In safety to Wuiklki. This adventure raiacdJMisa Miller very highly In theestimation of her couutry people, by tbe bulk ofwhom the shark Is held sacred, aud still worshipped.Even after a century of Christianity, this supersti-tion prevails. The Kanakas will not kill a shark ex-

cept in nor will they eat Its flesh, thoughthis is estimated s delicacy among most of the SouthSea Islanders. Tbe tact that a Hawaiian bad riddena tlsli so sacred (and, we may add, voracious), wasindeed a dt subject fur panegyric . though we ques-

tion whether the highest eulogiutu would Induce thesweet-voice- Maulan to again cavort upon the aplncof an " mano."

Tho nbovo is a fair specimen of a sensa-tional reporter's efforts to manufacture news.Miss Miller doubtless related the story of theold native Hawaiian woman, who, snmo twelveyears ago, rode across Wailua Buy on the Kickof a shark, as published in tho P. C. A., at thodate of the occurrence of this remarkable feat, which is lielieved to have been a fact, as therewero .several eyewitnesses of it. The reporterhas made Miss M. the hero of a story, whichis being copied far and wide in Americanpapers. Eu.

The fourth spelling match of tha seasoncame off in April, in the Music Hall, be-

tween the students of Tufts luiversalistCollege and the students of the Instituteof Technology, with a few volunteers,

several ladies. There was a fairaudience, and a great deal interest was

manifested iu the spelling, many Tutloni-an- s

and Institute boy Wing present. Theonly drawback to the enjoyment of thewhole affair was the introduction ofFrench words and the awkward pronunci-ation many Knglish ones by the gentle-man Selected give out the words, Mr.H. H. Lincoln, masur of the LymanSchool of Fast Boston. There were fiftycontestants on each side. In opening thecontest, the word transcript was givenout, and mastered by Tufts amid generalapplause. Proprietors, subscriptions, re-

ceived, believed, lieutenant, fortnightly, successfully, and like easy words led off,

rtrrvrfear being the first stnmbHng block, brought three contestants.

The successful spelling of "potato" pro-

duced great applause, and "aniline" trip-ped up three more scholars. Bourgeoiswas spelled "bousior" by a Tuftoniau whoretired amid considerable laughter. Eightmore Tuftsmen missed on cricketers, hem-

orrhoids, prognosticated, ipecacuauha, audible, epidemic, colonelcy and dema-

gogue, which was spelled "demmygog."This thinned the rank oa the side

of the platform very decidedly, and theI'utversalists began to tremble for theirown salvation. At this point one of theirnumber created a sensation by thunderingout "assassin," and then looking almost as

scared as if he had Wen one. Encyclical, ethereal, carom and surveillance also prov-

ed fatal to the Tufts and the I of Tfloundered on transiently, demoniac-

al, eidolon, newel, ratiocination, pyramid-al and flagellate. The words Ix.'Uj-intt-
