From The Desk of The Administrator Greetings! These past several months have been difficult as we tried to navigate through the day to day challenges due to emergence of the Covid-19 virus and all changes with safety precautions such as limitation of in-person visits to our facility, recommendations and regulations related to Covid-19. CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid) has begun to set out some guidelines for easing up on the current regulations set forth for nursing homes. The guidelines are set in phases similar to that which the Governor has set for the State. Unfortunately, this will be a long process. At this time, we are open for outside visitations. Please reach out to the facility and we will connect you with staff member to help you schedule your visit. Please know that once we have a date and a way to open safely, you will be the first to know. We appreciate your patience and the sacrifice you have made to help protect your loved one during the Covid-19 crisis. SUMMER AND THEN SOME

If Summer is your favorite time of the year, then you and I have something in common. It is the season of slowing down and enjoying those long summer nights. It is the time to finally go lightly in our summer outfits, walk in flip flops, and spend a day or two at the beach. There is nothing more relaxing than the sound of crashing waves, and the gentle touch of the glistening sand on those tired, weary feet.

This is, however, the one Summer when we get to ponder upon the previous months and what we went through as a community. It has been a very challenging and grueling Spring for all of us. The onset of COVID-19 was a painstaking endeavor no one deserved to experience. Albeit the training and readiness we had, no amount of preparedness exempted us from the contagion, and we felt every biting pang this virus had to bring. Wearing an N95 mask and donning on the protective gears were as uncomfortable as it was tedious. Doffing them off, decontaminating them and washing our hands to the extreme, while praying we do not bring the virus home to our loved ones, were even tougher. We did so because we care for our residents. They are the reason we do what we do!

We remember our residents who we lost to the complications of the virus. We celebrate those who fortunately recovered from it. As a team we want to let them know we are with them in this difficult journey. Yes, it is a journey, not a destination. We are not sure what the next season has in store, but one thing is sure. We will keep the faith and continue to fight.

The battle is not over, not just yet. This Summer is the time to be vigilant in preparing for next sea-son. We all still need to be precautious in taking the risks of going out, mingling with co-workers, or people who are not in our household. Six feet social distancing, wearing masks, washing our hands for twenty seconds, and decontaminating surfaces, etc. As the heat of Summer continues, may we fan the flames of awareness on COVID and not be complacent. We all have learned out lessons. This is the opportune time to apply them.

Our residents have been gradually introduced into small groups, here and there. We understand how our residents were cooped up in their rooms for the past months and however robust our room visits activities have been, those do not measure up with the benefits of socialization . Slowly and safely, we will get there.

Having said that, Aug 3-7th was our Summer Camp Week on Court 2 and the Pavilion. Residents enjoyed various camp activities such as fire pit sing along, smore’s, camp olympics, camp crafts, and the opening day of the mini-theater on Court 2. It was certainly a week of happy campers!

Thank you for reading. Remember, whatever you are, be a good one!

OUTDOOR VISITATION

We are currently allowing outdoor visitation with your loved ones. If you would like to schedule a

visit, please contact Johanna Bayers from Social Services.

Upon your arrival, sign in with the Receptionist, answer a few questions and have your temperature

taken. As per the visitation rules, we only allow two visitors at a time for each resident. Mask or

face covering is a requirement. Please be mindful of keeping social distance during your visit.

Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring the safety of our patients.

ON THE SPOT LIGHT ...A Resident’s Profile

“Always have a mind of your own, but you gotta learn to listen.”—

Grounded on this life motto, Mr. Vincent J. Baldino, or Vince as we fondly call

him, gracefully answered my interview questions. I asked him if he would mind

being featured in our newsletter. His curt reply was, “Might as well. I am already

famous anyway!”

We all know that reply was from being his forthright self, one with a dead-

pan humor. This I attribute to the fact that he was raised by his grandmother with

whom he had a lovely, happy childhood. Vince was born in a family of five (three

brothers and two sisters) and they lived in a small home in Philadelphia , PA. As the family got bigger, his

grandmother decided to take her favorite grandson to live with her. He attended grammar school then

graduated high school from Bishop Eustace. He played basketball and was in the varsity for many years.

Vince was esteemed into South Jersey Hall of Fame for his excellence in HS. At a young age of eighteen,

Mr. Baldino enlisted for the Marine Corps. He was in Vietnam for eighteen months and served dutifully.

After that, he attended St. Francis Loretto College in Pennsylvania where he majored in English and took

History for a minor. Vince had the heart to be a teacher but life took it’s twists and turns and along the road,

he met his wife for thirty three years, Karen, the love of his life. They have three children namely Albert,

Josh, and Melissa. Vince is a doting grandfather to a young boy named Albert whom he truly adores. While

raising a family, Vince engaged into a business called Ryken which was dedicated in building a cellular tower.

A few years after his wife passed away, he got less involved with business.

Vince joined Silver Healthcare in April of 2019. He was reclusive in the beginning but as he began to

join Activities, he realized the socialization was good for him. Last year, he was elected Chairman of the

Resident Council and takes joy in fulfilling his responsibilities. His advocacy helps improve quality of life for

peers. Vince also takes time appreciating deserving staff members.

Vince loves Philly sports especially baseball. He is an avid Phillies fan and can tackle sports trivia

without a sweat. He also likes the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Sixers. He takes pride in being a foodie and

used to frequent good restaurants. In fact, he couldn't wait to go out to lunch at a nice place when restrictions

are lifted. He enjoys playing Bingo and Trivia. He also leads the weekly Rosary group. When asked what

word of wisdom he has for everyone, he said , “Enjoy yourself, love your facility. The happier you are, the

better this place will become.” agnestan

ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES UPDATES

Fire prevention in nursing homes and other healthcare facili-ties is a primary concern for managers, staff and patients alike. Here are some important factors to consider when planning and implementing fire safety procedures for a healthcare facil-ity.

Fire Prevention

The best approach to fire safety is fire prevention. However, no facility is perfect, and no plan can prevent every possible cause of a fire. The following prevention tips can help you re-duce the chances of a fire:

Take care with electrical cords and electricity-powered tools and equipment. Make sure electrical cords and plugs are in good condition with no damage, nicks, or frayed areas. Do not run electrical cords under rugs or carpets or overload electrical outlets or extension cords. Additionally, replace any appliances, tools, or pieces of equipment that generate sparks, smoke, or unusual odors.

Be cautious in areas where fires could be more likely. Take extra precautions in kitchens, dining facilities, laundry rooms, and any other areas where fires are more likely to occur. Clean washer and dryer lint traps, making sure grease and other flammable materials don't accumulate on kitchen equipment. Also, ensure flammable substances are safely and securely stored.

Reinforce Smoking Policies & Procedures, especially among patients. Carelessness with cigarettes or other smoking materials is a leading cause of fires in residential set-tings. If there's a designated smoking area, introduce ashtrays that are designed to be tip-resistant. Make sure no one is al-lowed to smoke near oxygen supplies

Make sure alarms and fire suppression systems are func-tional. Follow local requirements for placement and maintenance of fire alarms, smoke alarms, carbon monox-ide detectors and fire suppression systems. Make sure alarms and detectors are serviced regularly and constantly kept in working order. -Aaron Maggio
