Leading the Way.

born on March 22, 1960, when

Slane christened his new creation

the Knit Wits. A 41-foot, twin-cabin

sportfisherman with a 14-foot beam

and a pair of 275-hp Lincoln V-8

engines, she was a testament to

the toughness that has become

synonymous with Hatteras Yachts.

The response to Knit Wits was

enthusiastic, and within two years,

Hatteras premiered the 41 Double

Cabin, the first fiberglass motor yacht

and the precursor of today’s motor

yacht line up. Additional models

quickly followed as the market began

to demand larger yachts with more

amenities and comforts.

In 1967, Hatteras added a second

manufacturing facility in the coastal

town of New Bern, N.C. More than

thirty years later, all manufacturing was

consolidated at the 95-acre New Bern

site where operations continue today.

To this day, Hatteras yachts set

the bar for exceptional performance

in the roughest of waters. All of our

boats are built with a solid fiberglass

hull bottom that is warranted for

ten years. And Hatteras engineers

Cape Hatteras are teaming

with exotic game fish. They

are also legendary for their

danger, and thousands of vessels have

met their fate in the “Graveyard of the

Atlantic.” Here, nor’easters can blow

almost as fiercely as hurricanes, and it

was here that Willis Slane envisioned

building a boat that could conquer

these untamed waters and the

unpredictable weather. It would not be

an ordinary boat — no traditional

wooden vessel could do this. The new

boat would have to be rugged and

robust to take the pounding of these

rough waters. Most importantly, it

would have to be a great all-around

platform, big enough to handle a group

of avid fishermen and comfortable

enough for family to enjoy.

Breaking with tradition, Slane

chose a new material — fiberglass

— to build this pioneering yacht in

the town of High Point, N.C. He then

enlisted the help of a young naval

architect named Jack Hargrave to

design this groundbreaking vessel.

The Hatteras legend was officially

and craftsmen continue to inspire

the industry with imaginative ideas,

innovative advancements such as resin

infusion, and state-of-the-art designs
