The Harrow Wine Story - Top of The World

We started building this list in 1998, when we had two pages, now we are rated not only as having one of the

finest Restaurant Wine Lists in U.K, but were voted in the top 100 Wine Lists in the World this September.

Along the road we have picked up a few “Gongs” including Decanter Wine Restaurant of The Year, The AA

Wine List of The Year, The Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence and recently “The World of Fine

Wine” top award of 3 Stars and The Jury Award for one of the best Wine Lists in the World.

Roger is now very much involved in Wine Journalism working for Decanter Magazine and www.the-buyer.net. He is also highly sort after as a Wine Judge and is Panel Chair for IWSC, has spent over 10 years

judging for The Decanter World Wine Awards and has recently been added to the judging panel for The

Pinnacle Wine Awards, based in Singapore. Roger also sits on The Taittinger Sommelier of The Year

Competition.

All our wines are served in Grape Varietal Specific Riedel Glasses, which enhances the wine and your

experience. We are able to provide a whole range of wines by the glass by using preservation systems such

as Le Verre de Vin and Coravin.

We list the wines by grape variety giving you a chance to reflect or choose a wine that may not immediately

come to mind when you are looking for a specific grape or style. We buy wine to age allowing these wines

to shine and be drunk at their best.

If this list is just overwhelming for you note we match every dish on our menus with at least two wine

choices, and have a comprehensive by the glass list.

The Tri Nations Wine Challenges were set up by Roger & Sue 6 years ago in Cape Town, and

are regularly hosted in Little Bedwyn and Cape Town and have also been held in Newbury, New Zealand

and Australia highlighting the wines of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand matched blind to a tasting

menu. In the last couple of years we have invited California and Chile as Guest Nations.

In 2014 the Jones Family went into wine production and have 2 wines already produced with further wines

on the way. The first 2 wines, a Chenin and a Pinot Noir, were both made in South Africa.

The Mamba Riedel Decanter Awards was set up by Roger and Sue over 13 years ago to

highlight premium wines from Australia. This event hosted every July in a marquee in our grounds, is

attended by the UK’s finest decision makers in the Wine Industry led by Steven Spurrier.

ROSÉ

Gabrielskloof Rosebud, Bot River South Africa 2018 £34.00 A real favourite – the Bot River terroir is characterised by the cool microclimate afforded by its close proximity to the

Atlantic Ocean. This Rose may be a little darker than currently fashionable, being 60% Syrah and 40% Viognier,

but it contains beautiful aromatics and elegant flavours of white melon, papaya and rose.

Break a Leg Blanc de Noir Rose, South Africa 2018 £38.00 Still Rosé from Cinsault grapes. Delicate perfumed green herby nose, savoury, and cranberry, finely textured, lightly tart.

I had a hint of Fino at one stage which added structure and saltiness, but then the sweet cranberry nectar evolved making

it a wine you could simply not spit out. Lukas likes the saying “keep it straight and simple”, yes this may be straight

and simple to him, but my word what a fantastic Rosé this is, reminiscent of the very best from Provence.

Given their heady prices this is a bargain and will also age beautiful – a marvel!

Vina Tondonia Rosado, Gran Reserva, Spain 1993 £150.00

Half 1991 £75.00 Full, dark-coloured Rosé with developed oak and rich dry sherry flavours. Develops to many stages as it opens

up in the glass. The only aged Rosé in the world. Superb as an aperitif or with seafood and spicy dishes.

FELTON ROAD PINOT NOIR

‘With Felton Road offered in over 500 top restaurants around the world (over 40 countries at last count),

it can be hard to keep up with them all, but there are a small group that we count as "friends of the

winery”. These tend to be people who come to visit us, like to drink the sort of bottles that excite us, stay

in touch with the things we are doing and, of course, people who cook the sort of food that we love to eat.

The Harrow at Little Bedwyn is most definitely in that gang. Has been for a long time and will be for

many years to come. Just a shame Roger and Sue won't open up a branch in Bannockburn!’

Nigel Greening, Felton Road Wines

Behind the Label

Felton Road Bannockburn Pinot Noir The Bannockburn winery’s ‘standard’ Pinot Noir is a distinguished wine in its own right, blended from its three vineyards at

Bannockburn – The Elms, Cornish Point and Calvert. Matured for 11 months in French oak casks (30 per cent new), it is bottled

without fining or filtering. Instantly attractive.

Felton Road Cornish Point Pinot Noir From the company-owned Cornish Point Vineyard at the eastern end of Bannockburn, 6 kilometres from the winery, this is always

one of my favourite Felton Road reds. Matured in French oak barriques (about 30 per cent new), a sturdy and deeply coloured,

powerful and highly concentrated, with deep plum, spice and nut flavours, lively and long. It should flourish with cellaring.

Felton Road Calvert Pinot Noir Grown in the Calvert Vineyard at Bannockburn – which neighbours and is managed by Felton Road – and matured in French oak

barriques (about 30 per cent new), is a very savoury and complex wine, deep and youthful in colour. Full-bodied, it is ripe and

silky-textured, with rich, vibrant cherry, plum, spice, dried-herb and nut flavours and a long finish. It's delicious in its youth but

evolves too.

Felton Road Block 3 Pinot Noir Grown at Bannockburn, on a north-facing slope 270 metres above sea level, this is a majestic Central Otago wine, among the

finest Pinot Noirs in the country. The mature vines are cultivated just in front of the winery, in a section of the vineyard where the

clay content is relatively high, giving ‘dried herbs and ripe fruit characters’. The wine is matured for about a year in Burgundy oak

barrels (about 30 per cent new), and bottled without fining or filtration.

Felton Road Block 5 Pinot Noir This is winemaker Blair Walter’s favourite Felton Road red. Grown in a ‘special’ block of The Elms Vineyard at Bannockburn in

Central Otago, it matures for a year in French oak barriques (30 per cent new), and is then held for several more months in

seasoned oak casks. In a vertical tasting of the 2007– 2011 vintages, held in September 2012, the 2010 vintage was the standout –

exceptionally concentrated, yet deliciously poised and silky-textured. The 2011 is a 'masculine' style, powerful and firm, sweet-

fruited and savoury, with deep cherry, plum and spice flavours, tight and youthful. It should flourish for a decade.

and excitement, lots of black fruit, mocha and liquorice with a powerful palate. Multi-layered and long, it seamlessly

glides across the palate with well-measured tannins and acids. The 04 is a treat whilst the 13 is vibrant and youthful.

The Relic, Dan Standish, Barossa Australia 2007 £199.00 4% Viognier, the rest Shiraz. “Offers up a sexy bouquet of floral notes, bacon, smoked meat, incense, and blueberry.
