The program at the membership meeting in March will be a celebration of St. Patrick’s Day through the social committee. Put on your green and come enjoy corned beef and cabbage! For your entertainment, we will be showing Dennis Bosi’s video of our Mardi Gras Float and parade plus activities. As a fund raiser for Youth Sailing, he is bring several extra copies on DVD and will have them for sale for $10:00 each. What a great idea – enjoy reliving Mardi Gras and help out our young sailors at the same time. The April meeting will feature a representative of the Tampa Aquarium which is conducting studies to see how the unusual weather is effecting out marine environment and the fish and wildlife populations. We already know that the impact has been significant to the manatees and our noses have told us that fish populations have been thinned. It will be interesting to learn how bad is the effect and what we can do, if anything, to help. Spring is on the horizon, finally, and we will be able to get out on the water after our long winter hibernation period. The May meeting with feature a program on hurricane preparedness and the marina emergency plans. Harbormaster Bill Franz, Russ Cromwell and George Nigro, part of a group planning for a hurricane emergency, will be making the presentation.

A new year, a new Bridge, and we’re making things happen. The attic has been cleaned and straightened out – let’s keep it that way. If you use something

(race supplies, party decorations) please put them back where you found them. The next project is to fix the floor by the drink machine. We have a structural engineer on board who is doing drawings for us to submit to contractors, we’ll get 3 bids, and go to the City for a permit. Hopefully if the building gods are on our side we can have the work completed by the Dock Party! We are also working on replacing the water fountain. In April we are looking at having a Spring Cleaning party to spruce up before the Dock party so stay tuned for a date. If you see something that needs repairing, please let me know. Happy

Many of us spend the week looking forward to a day or weekend on the water and the last thing we want is be the victim of a burglary. Both our vessel and our vehicle can become easy targets. The vessel is more susceptible if it is stored for long periods of time or items are not property secured. The criminal may also target your vehicle if he/she notices that you are going to be on your boat all day.

Remember to lock your vehicle and keep your valuables out of sight. If you are leaving a cell phone, camera or GPS in your car, lock it in the trunk or cover it up if your vehicle doesn’t have a trunk.

Buying a boat?If you are getting ready to buy that first boat or upgrade to a larger one make sure that the boat’s description on the title matches the boat you are buying. Be sure to check the year, make, and length and hull number. Be sure the model and serial number on an outboard mo-tor have not been removed, tampered with, or altered. Be suspicious of a fresh paint job on a late model vessel. If the price on anything seems too good to be true, the item may be stolen.

Don’t forget - Question strangers and/or report them to the Harbormaster 298-3030 or the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office at 582-6177. All workmen in the marina must register with the Harbormaster before beginning any work.

Racing Chad Tippen

Unfortunately we had to cancel DBC’s first race of the season due to weather, so the 2010 racing season will start on Saturday March 6th. It looks like we will have great weather for our first Gulf race so come out and join us for a great day of racing. We will finish the Spring season with a Gulf race on April 3rd, and the Commodore’s cup (“Laundry Race”) is scheduled for May 1st.

As usual, we are inviting our friends from the Florida Offshore Multihull Association (FOMA) to race with us in our Gulf Races as well.

If you are interested in racing, please contact Chad TIppin at [email protected] or (813) 817-3749. This goes for those that are interested in crewing as well as skippers who are inter-ested in getting into racing. We have lots of fun and always welcome newcomers regardless of experience level.

See you on the race course.

Fishing Report - March 2010 Offshore the table fair will be mangrove snapper, grunts, and sea bass. There seems to be no shortage of big grouper, but the season is closed until April. We are really enjoying the offshore trips with weather permitting. With nonstop action it’s all about the fight, and the offshore fish will try to pull you out of the boat! We are catching more fish than we need to for dinner with the snapper and grunts. To catch these fish, downsize hooks and weights (cut baits work well), chum with small frozen thread fins or white bait if you can find them. Since the water has been clear and cold, let the bait sit dead on the bottom

and try not to move the bait until you feel the strike. You still can have a great trip with catch and release grouper. We catch and release 90% of our grouper in open season anyway.

Inshore, we are catching redfish and trout near the fresh water spring, open water docks, and mainland shoreline. Fresh cut pinfish have been producing

the most redfish.

See www.youtube.com for videos - searchword “ajgrouper.” Just type ajgrou-per in box, then hit search... do not use drop down or suggested words.
