Dear Parents and Carers

The end of the summer term is fast approaching as I write this piece for the final edition of The Voice for this academic year. There is still, however, much to look forward to such as the Year 11 Prom at the Ageas Bowl on 15 July, which promises to be a lovely opportunity for students and staff to celebrate together. We also have the school Prize-giving to look forward to at St Mary’s Stadium where we will reward many of our students for their effort and achievement this year.

You will see from this edition that it has been another action packed term with school trips to the Battlefields, a Year 7 trip to LifeLab, a fabulous Science exhibition and a trip to Southampton University for those aspiring to go on to study at graduate level.

As we said goodbye to the Year 11 students, we had the pleasure of appointing our new team of senior and junior prefects and I am pleased to announce that Oliver Phillips and Holly Powell will be our new Head Boy and Girl for 2016/2017. They will be ably assisted by their deputies, Matthew Minns-White and Georgia Hanley. In addition to this, we have appointed prefects to the role of House Captains who will focus on the development of more house competitions. Student Voice Captains, representing the views of the students, and Sports and Charity Captains were also appointed. All of the students put forward exceptionally strong applications and it was lovely to see how committed and willing they are to contribute to the development of The Hamble School.

In other news we have seen some excellent individual sporting achievements including: Holly Powell (Yr 10) who finished 4th in the Hampshire Schools’ 1500m Race and is second reserve for the English Schools’ Athletics Championships this summer, Meg Fetherstonhaugh who has been selected for the Hampshire District Under 12 Cricket squad and Gemma Elliott who won three gold medals in the County Schools’ Swimming Championship in the 200m and 100m backstroke and the 200m freestyle.

Finally, I would like to remind you about the parent survey and ask, if you haven’t already done so, please could you visit the parents’ section of our website (access details below). There are just 12 questions, and it would be extremely useful to have as much positive parental feedback as possible as we approach the next Ofsted inspection. Thank you very much in advance for your participation.

I wish you and your family a very happy summer holiday and look forward to seeing your child back with us on 06 September, Years 7 and 11 at 8.30am and Years 8, 9 and 10 at 10.20am.

Best Wishes

Meg Fetherstonhaugh, Year 7, is part of the Hampshire/District Under 12 Cricket Squad for 2016, the club tell us that this reflects Meg’s enthusiasm for cricket and her hard work over the winter. Well done Meg!

GOOD NEWSWell done Meg!

The following students have been superstars and a great help to the buddy reading scheme. They have been buddy readers for the last two years and in this time, have helped many students from the lower years to develop their reading skills and gain confidence in reading aloud. They have been great ambassadors for reading and their help has been invaluable.

Where are they now?

NATHAN POWRIE

Nathan joined Hamble Community Sports College as a Year 7 student in 2006, and remained throughout his secondary education until, at the age of 16, he moved on to further education at Barton Peveril College.

During this time Nathan kept himself busy with part time work as a Gardener and Safety Steward for Saints FC; he also raised £3000 for a project in Kenya by organising bingo, quizzes and horse racing events, all of which tells us something about the character and determination of the young man of just 17 years. Nathan feels that

these activities provided him with enough evidence for the assessor to decide favourably when considering his character for flight school.

From Barton Peveril College, Nathan went straight into training and has been kind enough to share the process with us, from his initial training to achieving his goal.

“I found CTC Aviation through talking to people in the industry and online research.

Picking the correct school to train at is incredibly important for future employment prospects.

Initial phases of training were with CTC Aviation and took 18 months in total.

The first 6 months were purely ground based studies and this was based in Southampton.

The following 8 months took place in New Zealand where I flew single engine aircraft before transitioning into multi engine and acquiring my Commercial Pilot’s Licence.

The next 2 months were in Bournemouth, again on light multi engine aircraft and at the end of this phase I acquired my Instrument Rating. This qualifies pilots

to fly with sole reference to the instruments inside the aircraft and no visual cues outside.

After this it was back to Southampton where I transitioned into a multi crew environment and got my hands on a Boeing 737 simulator for my 'Airline Qualification Course'.

After this I was reliant on CTC Aviation’s airline links to set me up with my first job.

In October 2015 I commenced my Airbus A320 type rating with easyJet.

Upon joining the airline there were two more phases of training called ‘base’ and ‘line’ training which takes around two months before being allowed to 'fly the line' alongside everyday line captains.

I am now based out of Luton airport with easyJet where we fly to 56 different destinations on the Airbus A319 and A320.

I am extremely happy to have realised my dream of becoming an airline pilot, and would not have believed that it could happen this quickly. It fills me with great pride to take responsibility of a 70 ton aircraft. With every flight people are given the chance to see loved ones, go on holiday and negotiate business deals, for some people these will be life changing journeys.

My advice to anyone still at school that aspires to be a pilot would be to start preparing for your flying career now. Begin to research what it takes to enter the industry, what the job would be like and most importantly what skills are required to become a pilot. Try to get involved in activities that require you to work in teams and that require you to show leadership ability."

Nathan returned to Hamble College around a year and a half ago representing CTC Aviation at a careers event. Since then he has been contacted by two students who are interested in becoming pilots. Nathan was pleased to be able to help and says that he would have loved to have had someone to talk to about it when he was at school.

Nathan has kindly offered to give advice to anyone wanting to pursue a career as a commercial pilot, please contact Mrs Rosedon for Nathan’s contact details.

Year 7 students, have been studying Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night; a comedy full of disguise and mistaken identity. Within this unit, they have been investigating characters that ‘broke the rules’ by rebelling against the social expectations of the time. After half-term, year 7 will be exploring an exciting topic about Greek Myths and Legends, with the focus on ‘Do our mistakes define who we are?’ As part of this, students will be creating their own Greek Myths, as well as performing their tales!

Since the beginning of the summer term, year 8 have been studying Shakespeare’s Macbeth and investigating the key enquiry question: ‘Does power corrupt?’ As part of this investigation, students have been exploring how Macbeth progresses throughout the play; from a brave and loyal subject to a corrupt and evil tyrant! After half-term, year 8 explored the theme of Prejudice through one of two modern plays, FACE or Noughts and Crosses, and will be writing a dramatic monologue focusing on how to create perspective, empathy and voice.

Year 10 & 11 London Art Trip

On Friday 5th February a group of year 10 and 11 GCSE and BTEC Art and Design students visited the Tate Britain and Tate Modern Art Galleries in London. Having started their exam project, the students were keen to draw inspiration from exploring the work of other artists exhibited in these world famous art galleries.

This year, for the GCSE exam project, students were asked to respond to a theme – ‘Past, Present and/or Future. BTEC students responded to a choice of assignment briefs exploring the themes ‘Flower Power’ or ‘Reflecting your World’. They have had 10 weeks of lessons to develop ideas for a final piece that they created in a 10 hour (2 day) exam in April.

The day started at 8:20am when the staff and students met the coach at the school. After a 2 hour road trip we arrived at the Tate Britain. The galleries exhibits were organised in chronological order displaying how attitudes and ideas about ‘Art’ have developed in Britain in the last millennium. Students used their sketchbooks and cameras to record their observations focusing on the topic or theme they had chosen to explore for their exam project.

The group were treated to fabulous views of London’s main landmarks including Big Ben and the London Eye as we travelled on the Thames to the Tate Modern via the Tate Boat. After a quick lunch at the Tate Modern students and staff explored the impressive Turbine hall and the multiples floors of contemporary modern art housed in the Tate Modern.

Art Club is an opportunity for Year 7 and Year 8 students to work on extended Art projects in a small group session. Our Art Club meets on a Tuesday after school from 3 until 4 o’clock. The projects in Art Club run half termly exploring a range of media, technique and processes using a variety of themes as starting points.

Our most recent project was ‘Unwearable Shoes’. Students looked at work from many artists such as; Maison Martin Margiela, Alexander McQueen and Issey Miyake for inspiration and used Pinterest as an idea source.

Our teacher lead project brief, was to create or upcycle a pair of shoes so extreme they would be deemed ‘unwearable’. Students created interesting and intricate designs which lead to bright and exciting outcomes.

Learning to use a variety of sculpting/modelling materials,

students had lots of fun moulding each other’s feet with ModRoc to create their own individual cast, forming a shoe.

This project ran for 5 weeks so time was against us. The outcomes were colourful and imaginative and at the end of the projects students proudly took their creations home to show their families.

Here are a few pictures of our wonderful works of art/animals in some cases.

Our next mission was to master the art of animation/ stop motion. Using computer software, digital cameras and designing a set using Playdoe to model the characters for animations.

Come and visit us in the Art Department for details on current or future fun filled projects. Learn a new skill or have fun expanding your knowledge in different Art genres.

YEAR 9 ENGINEERING CRANE

Year Nine Engineering students have been working in teams to design, engineer and build a fully working crane. Their brief was that it must be able to rotate, lift and lower a weight. The crane must also include a pulley system in order that the ratio of the lifting force on the weight could be reduced.

Students had to also include a motor that could perform at least one of the operations. They were given a free range of materials and resources and were therefore able to draw on

the previous experiences and skills they had developed throughout the year.

Students included in their design and making the following procedures: Lazer cutter to cut out the different parts, 3D printed items, a range of different tools and machines to accurately mark out, cut and assemble their cranes. The students tested and compared designs before completing a detailed evaluation of what was learnt and what could be modified and developed further.

At The Hamble School we aim to recognise the needs of students who have dyslexia by providing our students that have a Specific Learning Difficulty with an online dyslexia screening test that our school has invested in. These students are identified by either recommendations from teachers or previous knowledge obtained from primary schools. The GL screening tests are by no means a diagnosis; however they have proven to be a significant indication for our department in providing intervention for dyslexic students and provide valuable evidence towards access arrangements.

Once screened, data is then analysed. The individual diagnostic assessment provides a profile that can be translated directly into an individual teaching plan, enabling specialist teachers to devise and implement a relevant and sensitive, multi-sensory intervention programme which covers:

• Word Literacy• Processing Speed• Phonological Processing• Working Memory

This enables us to share information with class teachers (through SIPs) and parents in order to assist the students. We appreciate that each student has different needs and we consider these needs before intervention plans are put into practise.

Parents are involved throughout the process and feedback is provided to enable them to understand their child’s difficulties and thus assist them at home.

The learning support department fully supports Hampshire Families Dyslexia Support and would encourage parents to complete this questionnaire if you are worried your child could be dyslexic or would like to join a local support group.

For those students who have come to The Hamble School with a diagnosis of dyslexia, our ALSA, Mrs McClure supports these students through adding personalised strategies to students’ Student Information Profile sheets (SIPs – provided to teaching staff by the Learning support department for all students with SEN). She also delivers individual and group intervention.

“I provide 1:1 specialist support for students who require assistance with dyslexia in a positive, friendly environment using proven multi-sensory methods. I aim to build confidence whilst having fun and my strength is my ability to identify and adapt to each learning style in order to help students. As I firmly believe that, with the right intervention, everyone is capable of reaching their full potential.”

Able, Gifted & TalentedYEAR 8 LEARN WITH US

On Monday 18th January, 18, Year 8, AG&T students went to Southampton University as part of the ‘Learn with U.S.’ programme. The aim of the programme is to encourage students to consider University as a future for them.

After the day they had, I’m sure many of our students will want to follow that route. They listened to three lectures in a variety of subjects, taught by PhD students.

They had a lecture on Archaeology where they learned many features about bones and burial rituals. Looking at actual artefacts they’d use their new found knowledge to identify what it was made from and which time period it might have come from.

History was next where they discussed the role of the Irish in the British Army in World War I. They had to look at different viewpoints from a variety of groups of people, including the suffragettes, the British politicians and the Irish politicians. They produced posters and had to present a motivational speech from their groups’ point of view.

Lastly, the students heard from a Shark Scientist! He explained to them the importance of studying sharks to protect entire ecosystems and showed them videos of his work catching and monitoring these

creatures. They then had an opportunity to handle actual sharks (dead of course!) and take measurements in order to identify which species they had. This was by far the most exciting part of the day!

The students thoroughly enjoyed their day and benefited enormously from it. They asked many probing questions and learned a great deal. They were a credit to the college and one of the University Student Ambassadors said “I enjoyed working with your students today – their behaviour and interest in taking part in the sessions made the experience all the more memorable for me as an ambassador!”

YEAR 7 LEARN WITH US

On Wednesday 9th March, 50, year 11, High Attainers, were invited to take part in an all-day event tailored to their needs. The students were allowed to wear smart dress for the day and provided with breakfast and lunch.

The day began with a healthy breakfast at 8am, followed by an outline from Miss Pennington as to why keeping healthy and hydrated is so important to their studies.

Next, Mrs Bridges delivered a mind blowing session on ‘Of Mice & Men’ and went into in-depth detail about 'archetypes' and how this relates to context of the novel. The students all loved this session and said how useful it had been to help them achieve the higher grades in their exam.

Students were then split into two groups and taken to do some A and A* topics in Mathematics. They were presented with questions including length, area and volume, scale factors, probability trees without replacement and areas of sectors and segments. Some of these topics required the students to draw on previous knowledge such as Pythagoras’ theorem and advanced trigonometry, testing their understanding and application.

The rest of the day was given to a talk from someone from the University of Southampton about how to make you stand out from the crowd in University applications as well as a session by Mrs Fenner on emotional and mental resilience. Both of these talks provided the students with vital skills to help them achieve their goals in the future.

The final session of the day involved 5 ex-students from Hamble who came in to speak to current students about what they had achieved since leaving school. They shared their experiences of applying to college and University, which courses they had studied and most importantly, any tips and advice they could pass on. This session was by far the favourite part of the day for most of our students.

The whole day was received extremely positively by all the students who took part and may well shape the future lives of our young people. Many students said that they already had plans to attend college and university and this had encouraged them further, while others said “I had not planned on going to University but now I want to”.

Many thanks to all involved for a very enjoyable day.

“Reach for the Stars” Day

As part of raising aspirations, and increasing awareness of university education, some year 7 students were given the opportunity to attend a workshop taster day at Southampton University, organised as part of the Learn with U.S. programme.

Learn with U.S. aims to work in partnership with schools and colleges to improve academic attainment and intellectual self-confidence.

In addition to raising aspiration and increasing awareness of university education, students took part in a variety of tasks. These were designed to increase students’ knowledge of studying at university and soft skills such as team working, leadership and communication.

This was an informative and valuable morning students feedback was very positive.

BookBuzz is a reading initiative that we have been involved with since its launch in 2012. This programme promotes the importance and value of reading for pleasure.

Following the success of previous years, a book was purchased for every year 7 student.

As part of our World Book Day celebrations students took part in a bookmark competition. We received over 300 entries!

The judges had a particularly difficult job choosing a winner as the standard of entries was so high.

Amelia Ramplin was chosen as a worthy winner.

In February a group of year 7 students were invited to meet Cathy Cassidy at Thornden School. This was a fantastic opportunity for the girls to meet one of the most popular authors in the library. She was brilliant!

NATIONAL SCI-TECH CHALLENGE 2016

Year 10 students began the New Year by competing with one another to earn a position on the team that would represent Hamble College at the National Sci-Tech Challenge 2016 in February. Students were visited by ExxonMobil volunteers – experts with backgrounds in both Science and Technology – where they were presented with an energy challenge. Year 10 rapidly rose to the challenge, discussing the different STEM-related careers and how these careers could help with exploring potential solutions to the global energy problem.

Competition was fierce with a significant number of students keen to represent the College. 15 students were successful in gaining a place on the team to represent Hamble College, subsequently attending the National Sci-Tech Challenge at Novotel Hotel, Southampton.

Once at the Challenge, students were organised into three teams, with just 5 students in each team in preparation for a new challenge to be presented by a senior executive from the local Fawley Power Station and Refinery. The first team was formed by Connor Arnold, Charlie Clark, Bradley Johnson, Chloe Moss and Aaidan Neal. The second team was formed by Lottie Ash, Yves Bell, Kaya Finch, Oliver Phillips and Ehlana Spindloe.

The third, and final, team was formed by William Fox, Charlie Lant, Cameron Moore, Harry Robinson and Jimmy Wharton.

Supported strongly and skillfully by George Morton, an ExxonMobil volunteer attached

to our teams, students were given just 2 hours to suggest a solution to a significant water problem faced by power plants and refineries – with particular focus, in this instance, on ExxonMobil’s Slagen Refinery in Norway.

Students used and developed their skills in communication, team work, leadership and research to prepare a presentation to a panel of judges. Joined by 6 other schools from the south of England, Hamble College teams were competing against 32 other groups of students. Each group proposed creative, inventive and modern solutions, such as:

• Nanotechnology to filter ions dissolved in salt water,

• Desalination of salt water using micro-organisms such as algae,

• Solar stills to purify salt water,• using the heat released by

refinery processes to heat homes, or

• developing industrial-sized sterling thermoelectric generators, and even thirsty Tarmac to store rainwater and melted snow/ice to recycle in the refinery.

Despite the strength, creativity and research-based solutions, competition from other teams was equally as fierce resulting in one team moving into the final round of this stage of the Challenge – Team 2.

The day concluded with a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable presentation and series of impressive demonstrations from a Chemical Products Manager from ExxonMobil, including flame throwers, burning salts, demonstrating a large Rubens’ tube, turning fire into a fire cyclone and exploring how crude oil is used in everyday life.

All students represented the College outstandingly on the day, with exceptional standards of both uniform and behaviour. All students involved have helped to raise the profile of the developing science department at Hamble College, and were a genuine credit. Well done – the Science department commend you all for your effort and participation.

Year 9 students – look out for this event in January 2017. We look forward to seeing what the Challenge will be next year and

am confident that you will all be keen to exceed the levels of creativity and imagination already shown this year.

A special thanks to Miss S Niblock for her support on the day – you helped to support morale, challenge the ideas of students and encourage engagement.

The Science department have been egg-citedly awaiting the hatching of their chicks.

On the 6th June we received our delivery of the fertilized eggs and all the equipment needed for this amazing experience.

Tinkers Cross Farm, who supplied everything, took us through all the instructions and then it was just a waiting game…

AN EGG-CITED SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

The students were able to watch this live through the window or in their tutor rooms as there was a camera set on them at all times. The school staff were all very excited and it was the talk of the school when they started to hatch.

From the ten eggs we were given we have had eight hatch which is as predicted by the farm, 80% usually hatch.

We will keep the chicks until nearer the end of term and then they will be returned to Tinkers Cross Farm where they can then be adopted by people who keep chickens.

All the students have been very excited to see the chicks hatch and watch them run around in their pen. From Monday 27th June we will be running sessions after school where students can sign up to come and meet the chicks and handle them.

“We were told they would hatch on day 15 and they did.”

YEAR 7: BUILDING A HEALTHY BODY FOR LIFE

This half term saw a group of 30 highly commendable Year 7 students complete a visit to the LifeLab Project at the Southampton General Hospital. These students were rewarded for their consistently outstanding behaviour for learning, as well as their significant progress and attainment in their learning in Science.

“Can chocolate and fizzy drinks really do that to my blood sugar levels?”

During the visit, students discussed the impact of health and disease and explored how to minimise the impact of these through the lifestyle choices they make every day. Using state-of-the-art technology, students completed a series of activities looking at the heart, lungs, endocrine system, bones and liver. Students were very surprised to feel the bones of a person with osteoporosis and thrilled to use an ultrasound machine to see arteries

in their neck and to hear their heart beat; even Ms. Levita needed to get in on the action!

“Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive.”

Students even looked at how to save a person’s life by learning and using CPR techniques – a number of students couldn’t resist singing along with Vinnie Jones to “Staying Alive”! Take a look at this website to learn the technique for yourself (https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ff_kalDZfzU).

“What’s the most exciting part about your job?”

Students even had a brilliant opportunity to meet working scientists and discuss their current research into cancer treatments, specifically how to use the body’s own immune system to recognise and attack cancer cells in an effort to reduce the need for chemotherapy treatments which can have significant health impacts on patients.

All students commented that they would most certainly recommend the project to other students both at The Hamble School and within the wider community and were excited to hear of other future opportunities to complete another LifeLab project during the summer in future years.

“How can I get involved?”

Our students represented the school with the highest levels of commitment, and the Science team are excited to announce that they have received funding from the LifeLab project to complete three further visits next year. Watch this space…

“By visiting LifeLab, I realised the impact of my lifestyle choices on my body.”

Year 11 students got a taste of the outdoors recently as part of an innovative initiative to accelerate learning and development in Maths and English.

Thirty-five students spent the Valentine’s weekend at Marwell Outdoor Activity Centre in Winchester where they participated in a range of educational and fun-packed sessions.

After completing four one-hour Maths classes and three English sessions with their assigned teachers, the students, who were split into groups of three or four depending on ability and areas for improvement, completed a Maths treasure hunt and a test for success.

This was combined with a range of afternoon and evening leisure activities, which included

archery, climbing, a giant swing, table football, orienteering, as well as movie and fish and chip nights.

Miss Wesson, Director of Learning for maths, said: “This weekend proved to be an extremely valuable opportunity for students to improve their understanding and knowledge of both subjects in a different environment with students going up 1.6 sublevels of progress on average.”

“By combining our teaching and support sessions with a host of fun and action-packed activities, we were able to ensure the perfect balance between work and leisure and we are confident the trip will have huge benefits for those involved as we continue preparations for this year’s exam period.”

Following its success, the Maths Department have returned to the Marwell Outdoor Activity Centre for a similar day in May.

Jack Finch, year 8, competed in three of the four rounds of the Clay Pigeon Independent Kart Racing (IKR) Spring Championships. He has raced a few times at Clay, but never in a Championship.

In round two (the first Jack did) he won the first heat, the first race he had competed in at Clay for over one year and came 2nd in the other two heats. He qualified in pole position for the final. The final was 21 laps long, Jack won by just 0.058secs.

Round three turned out to be very wet and we struggled to get Jack’s kart set up correctly. The kart was a handful, suffering with under steer then suddenly snapping into over steer making the kart very unstable. Jack qualified for the final in 6th place and was sure he could have made up a few places. But the weather deteriorated to such an extent the meeting had to be abandoned.

During round four, Jack won heats one and two after starting from near the back of the grid. In the 3rd heat and the final, Jack had accidents with another kart which resulted in the loss of a few places.

Overall - in Jack’s first Championship at Clay Pigeon, he came 2nd.

On Tuesday 5th July, two of our students, Ella Beattie-Edwards and Amber Stonehouse, have been asked to play the violin as part of the Basingstoke School Prom.

Ella and Amber have been taking part in an exciting new project for Hampshire as part of an ensemble called “Hampshire Youth Folk Ensemble” which is run by Hampshire Music Service.

The ensemble, which is encouraging students from schools all across Hampshire to be involved in playing traditional music, rehearse every Tuesday and is led by Joyce Ingledew (Fiddle player).

HYFE have given three performances in the Great Hall, Winchester for various charities, one being the “Walking for Wounded” charity where a £5,000 cheque was presented to the veterans on behalf of Hampshire County Council.

They have also taken part in the Music for Youth competition which is a nationally led project and are due to play for the Primary Schools Ceilidh in Bishops Waltham and the Primary Schools Concert at the Anvil on 5th July.

As well as developing skills in their instrument, which will last for life, they have developed friendships and had fun in this group along the way.

As part of the Physical Education course, students are assessed in sports they participate in outside of school. This is a fantastic opportunity to see students in action and to grade them in their own environment. It has been a pleasure to see several students in action this year.

These students include; Flynn Biddulph and Lewis Frost in Taekwondo. They were able to show that they have black belts and it was great to see them sparing.

Rose Kite who plays football for England and it was a pleasure to watch her in a local match in Southampton when she was representing Hampshire. Max Westerman is also a keen footballer and plays for Hamble United it was great to see him in action for our local team. Finally, Billy Houghton captained the Sholing FC Team where he represented them well and was a true ambassador for sportsmanship. Billy’s team played in Stockbridge, and this was a fantastic setting to watch the game unfold.

Sam Trodd is in the National UR7’s Squad for Rugby 7’s. The team that is made up of players from across the UK had their first outing together at Lychett Minster 7’s and Sam played in a variety of positions but his true potential was shown when he became scrum half and took control of the game. Sam’s team won the tournament which is a great start to their season.

YEAR 7 MOTTE AND BAILEY CASTLE MODEL COMPETITION

This year’s competition saw some outstanding models. Students put a tremendous amount of time and effort into producing scale size models of Norman Motte and Bailey Castles.

A BIG congratulation to the following students: Charlie Corbett, Jessica Lennard, Amelia Nicholson, Nathaniel Serpell-Stevens, Camren Coffin and Lydia Jackson.

This term will also see the annual visit to the Battlefields for a selection of Year 8 students. The visit will allow students to visit a number of sites connected to the conflict, cemeteries of fallen soldiers and will take part in an act of remembrance at Menin Gate. This year’s visit will also take place a few days before the hundredth anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, and so the students will be able to visit the Somme as preparations are being made of the commemoration.

GOOD NEWSLetter from Parent MARCH 2016 Good Morning Mrs Ballanger,

Having attended the last Parent Forum I understand that the school would love to hear about student’s achievements outside of school.

This Saturday, Ben received a Special Commendation Award from his dance school – Abbey Dance for high achievement and consistent hard work at Abbey Dance this year.

Abbey Dance had a production at the Berry Theatre – West End to Broadway, with two performances on Saturday 19th March.

The dancers have shown commitment in that their rehearsals have been an extra hour or two each week and during the past few weeks full days have been given up at half term and weekends. Many of them may have been juggling Rock Challenge and the Abbey Dance Rehearsals with their school work. The dance school posted on social media how pleased and proud they were of their students and I just wanted to share this with you. Having attended the show I can say it was a very polished and entertaining performance, for this reason I am sharing the names of the Year 7 Hamble students that took part;

Ben Gough, Lydia Jackson, Olivia Brown, Bethany Lloyd, Abigail Crotty, Amelia Nicholson.

WELL DONE TO YOU ALL!

ROCK CHALLENGE 2016I’M JUST LIKE YOU!

GOOD NEWSLetter from Dave at SOUTHAMPTON CITY MISSION TO MISS BUCKLERDear Clare,

We just wanted to say a sincere thank you to the staff and pupils at Hamble College for the extremely generous Christmas collection of food and money.

It was such a pleasure to meet the girls who had chosen to do this, as well as speak to the pupils! It was obviously well promoted which made it such a success!

We estimate around 350 tins where collected which was amazing!! Honestly to receive that, combined with the financial contribution really was such a blessing. The college should feel very proud as this makes a significant difference in people’s lives that we are meeting.

If you had any ideas to work together further in the future then we would love to do so.

Thank you for your efforts too, and pass on to the families represented at the school a huge thank you!

Kindest Regards

“From a young age, society teaches us to define people; from the person in a wheelchair, to the same sex couple, to the guy on the train with a rucksack. Would you make judgements about me, or allow your conscience to stop you? Because ultimately... I’m just like you.”

Another incredible year has passed and another incredible team of staff and students should be proud of their achievement.

This year our theme was controversial, Mrs Brunink and myself (Mrs Capers) decided on the theme, based on the stereotypes and judgements we hear every day. For example, inappropriate words being used, not necessarily intending to offend, but is that a good enough excuse? This made us think about where these judgements come from. In certain situations it is easy to make assumption and judgements about people. Haven’t you?

Rehearsals and the hard work started in November; costumes, scenery, admin, all the things that work together to create our piece.

So the big day arrives…

Rehearsal went well, now to get ready…we had the privilege of a few ex-students armed with lots of hair spray and make up to get the team ready.

Face paints were amazing and as usual thanks to the Art team. Our very own Mrs Brunink even got involved with styling the

hair this year, a real team effort! Students were getting nervous and adrenalin was flowing, but it was all very exciting!

Performance Time – We were up last so it seemed like we waited forever. WOW, what an amazing performance, we had great judges’ comments and an amazing portrayal of the theme by the students, this is what makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Hamble students showed their true colours and excelled themselves, all day and in the performance. They definitely did themselves, their families and the school proud.

Result: Hamble received 4th place overall and a variety of individual awards were given. Well done team.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved. To the staff, students and parents who supported us. Rock Challenge is a team game, without the support and hard work it would not be possible to take part.

Can’t wait for next year, Mrs Brunink is already planning…

GO TEAM HAMBLE!

The two media forms ranged from excellent radio interviews to outstanding video presentations. The live, published websites all featured original photography and captured the topic “Young people take action” perfectly.

Meanwhile Year 9 & 10 Media Studies students are busy editing their music videos and film trailers.

Dear Ms Croke

I am a teacher at Osborne School, for children with Special Education Needs, in Winchester. Last Wednesday 14 Year 9’s from Hamble came to support our Sports Day with Mrs Powell. I really wanted to write and tell you how impressed all the staff were with your pupils attitude and enthusiasm during the whole day.

Our pupils have a range of needs, from Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties to Moderate Learning Difficulties and it can be a very challenging place to work for our most experienced staff. However the way your pupils approached the day was a pleasure to see. Not only did they commit fully to the day, they showed the power young people have to build relationships with each other, not matter what difficulties they may have, in such a short space of time. It is certainly a very special group of Year 9’s you have as they demonstrated with their open mind and caring manner. Our pupils had a great day and particularly enjoyed playing football at lunch with the Sports Leaders.

Thank you for your support and please pass on my thanks and gratitude to the Year 9 Sports Leaders and Mrs Powell who were so fantastic.

Thank you again.
