GENERAL GUIDELINES:
THE HABITATS TRUST GRANTS: GUIDELINES
• Applicants must be locally registered in India.• Only projects being carried out in India will be considered.• Applica�ons must be submi�ed in English to the best of your ability. This is not a selec�on
criterion.• Projects must have direct conserva�on benefits to threatened habitats or species. However, we
recognize that data gathering may be a cri�cal element in developing a conserva�on or management strategy.
• Grants will only be provided for the conserva�on of indigenous species. Projects focusing on non-na�ve and exo�c species will be rejected.
• Grants will only be provided for natural habitats i.e. areas composed of viable assemblages of flora and/or fauna species of largely na�ve origin and/or where human ac�vity has not essen�ally modified an area's primary ecological func�ons and species composi�on.
• Grants will not be provided for pure research work or for post graduate studies including thesis.• Grants will not be provided for expedi�ons or for interna�onal travel to a�end conferences and
seminars.• Applica�ons will only be accepted through the online grants portals on The Habitats Trust
website (www.thehabitatstrust.org/grants).• Applicants may only apply for only one grant per year across all grant categories.• Projects must be structured to provide long-las�ng and pragma�c conserva�on outcomes on
ground.• Project impacts must be measurable and appropriate indicators must be provided.• Preference will be given to projects with a significant community/stakeholder engagement
element.• Projects should be a minimum of 12 months in dura�on, although each applica�on is assessed
on its own merit and the project length can be flexible. • Funding must be used predominantly towards field-based ac�vi�es.• Budgets must be provided in Indian Rupees.• Successful applicants must submit quarterly reports and a final report on the work supported by
The Habitats Trust as per the repor�ng cycle and template provided.• Grants will be dispatched as per a funding schedule or on need basis over the project dura�on.• Field visits will be carried out for all shortlisted projects.• Successful applicants cannot apply for funding for the same project in two consecu�ve years.

• This grant is open to only organisa�ons.• The organisa�on must be a registered not-for-profit en�ty in India i.e. Society, Trust, Sec�on 8
(previously Sec�on 25) company.• The organisa�on must have registered u/s 12A (A) of Income Tax 1961.• The organiza�on must have an 80G cer�ficate.• The organisa�on must have completed 5 years of func�onal existence (as per registra�on
cer�ficate) in India on or before 31st March 2019.• The organisa�on must have at least 3 years of experience carrying out direct on-ground
projects.• The organiza�on must have an annual budget of over Rs. 50 lakhs, including field expenses. • The organisa�on should not have any poli�cal or religious affilia�ons.• The organisa�on should have registra�on documents, audited financial reports, tax cer�ficates,
FCRA (If applicable) and/or similar documents depending on the nature of the funding/ dona�ons that it receives.
• Organisa�ons must be willing to present the above men�oned documents if shortlisted.• Under this grant, we invite proposals from organisa�ons focused on the conserva�on,
protec�on and/or regenera�on of India’s natural habitats and endangered species.• Projects that focus on species that are listed on Schedule I of the Indian Wild Life (Protec�on)
Act 1972 or listed as cri�cally endangered/endangered on the IUCN Red List will be given preference.
• Projects that focus on India’s lesser-known natural habitats will be given preference. • Projects that engage the local communi�es will be given preference.

ecological biomes of India which are not adequately represented under the Protected Area system and/or are the natural habitat of indigenous endangered species.
• These lesser-known habitats should be diverse representa�ve ecosystem that have generally been overlooked by the na�onal media, tourism, NGOs and government policy.
• Landscapes holding a significant popula�on of endangered species listed under Schedule I of the Indian Wild Life (Protec�on) Act 1972 or listed as cri�cally endangered / endangered on the IUCN Red List will be given preference.
• Preference will be given to projects that aim to secure, regenerate and ecologically restore prime habitats that promote the movement of wildlife and gene�c exchange, and could serve as a haven for dispersal popula�ons from larger Protected Area.
• Projects that engage the local communi�es will be given preference.

• We will also consider projects working to protect other lesser-known species that are listed on Schedule I of the Indian Wild Life (Protec�on) Act 1972 or as cri�cally endangered/ endangered/ vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, if supported by a strong statement of need and a pragma�c conserva�on plan.
• Projects that engage the local communi�es will be given preference.• Projects involving the cap�ve management or breeding of species will not be considered, except
in excep�onal cases where on ground conserva�on plans need to be supplemented.

GRANTS FOR INDIVIDUALS
• This grant is open to only Individuals.• This grant seeks to support grassroots conserva�onists who are not currently full-�me
employees or board members of any registered not-for-profit en�ty in India i.e. Society, Trust, Sec�on 8 (previously Sec�on 25) company.
• Grant recipients must register themselves as a not-for-profit en�ty in India i.e. Society, Trust, Sec�on 8 (previously Sec�on 25) company within 6 months of receiving the grant. The Habitats Trust will extend its support to grant recipients in the process of registra�on.
• Individuals should have bank statements, proof of taxes, PAN card and Aadhar card.• Individuals must be willing to present the above men�oned documents if shortlisted.• Under this grant, we invite proposals from individuals focused on the conserva�on, protec�on
and/or regenera�on of India’s natural habitats and endangered species.• Projects that focus on species that are listed on Schedule I of the Indian Wild Life (Protec�on)
Act 1972 or listed as cri�cally endangered/endangered on the IUCN Red List will be given preference.
• Projects that focus on India’s lesser-known natural habitats will be given preference. • Projects that engage the local communi�es will be given preference.
