Primary Optical Area

The name of the star of the film, Liam Neesan, which means fans or people who know of Liam Neesan will recognize his name and remember the films he has been in, if they were a fan of his films, it will intrigue them to come watch this new film he is starring in.

Image of the star, Liam Neesan. They have placed the image here because; people will recognize his face as he is fairly well known, so he is definitely recognisable. His face is one of the first things you notice, so you immediately think the film must be good because it has such a well-known actor starring. Also, by the stern, angry, concentrated look on his face you can tell he is playing a very serious role in this film. This is also clear mode of address by the way he is looking directly at the camera, and at the person looking at the poster.

Also, Liam Neesan is known for his role in the film ‘Taken’ which is a very popular action film, which means the audience will predict that because Liam Neesan is staring in this film, this film will be very similar to Taken. Because Taken was so popular, this helps Walk Among the Tombstones because people will already presume the film is good and go to watch it.

Title of Movie – “Walk Among the Tombstones” The use of the word, tombstones immediately shows us that this film will be surrounded by death, as tombstones represent death.

Tagline – “People are scared of all the wrong things” Tells us that this film will be thrilling, as there must be something to be scared of involved in this film. It also, intrigues the audience as we want to know and find out what there is to be scared of in this film.

Strong Fallow Area

Again we see the title in this area also. In this area we clearly see the stars face, Liam Neesan. This is basically the same point as

previous, where he is featured in the Primary Optical Area. We also see the tagline once again.

Weak Fallow Area

Gun In the weak fallow area the main focus point is the gun in the stars hand. This is a huge

signifier of genre, as it makes it clear that this film will feature action and again, death. Guns are a genre convention of Action films, as they are very commonly used in action films. So this is a huge hint towards what genre this film will be. This will intrigue the audience, as they will want to know or find out why he needs this gun. Also, guns are related to death and killing, so this is a clear sign that death will definitely be occurring in this film.

The Terminal Area

Release date

The release date and information about this film is featured in the Terminal area, this is because going by The Guttenburg Design Principle this is the final place people see when looking at this poster. So after the audience has viewed everything on the page, they will lastly see the date this film comes out, so they will remember when the film comes out and remember to go watch it.

Cross

We can also see in the background a cross, which makes it clear he’s literally walking through a graveyard. A cross is also related to death, so this is another signifier of genre as death is commonly in action thrillers. So again this poster makes it very clear what this film is about.

Axis of Orientation

Axis of Orientation is basically the direction we look at something, as shown above when we look at the poster we look from the top left corner (primary optical area) to the bottom right corner (the terminal area).

Genre, Codes and Conventions

There are quite a few genre codes and conventions used within this particular poster. Straight away from looking at the poster we can tell it’s an action thriller film by what is featured on the poster. For example the gun featured in the weak fallow area, which I have already explained.

Anchorage

Liam Neeson has been purposely placed right in the centre of the poster, because he has starred in other films like Taken and Taken 2 which are very popular it shows he is a very well known actor. The reason he is straight in the middle of the poster is to draw attraction straight to him so people immediately notice him, and this will encourage them to find out more about the film.

Modes of Address

As previously mentioned Liam Neeson is directly in the middle of the poster, he is also looking directly at the camera and therefore giving the illusion of looking back at the person looking at the poster. This is mode of address.
