HAUNTED

HOUSES...when a group of dedicated students were working late into the night at the Union Programming Council office. The rain pattered dismally against the window panes and their candles were nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, the dull yellow eye of the creature opened. The creature—a giant celebration of Halloween free for all students 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.— began to take a life of its own as it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs. And thus it was, Crimson Nights: The Deathly Hallows was born.

No student could surpass their excitement at the thought of that cherished campus tradition. The thrill of August’s Crimson Nights: Circus Circus wrapped in the gauze of a mummy and a clock of a vampire. The students gazed while the The Deathly Hallows was unfinished; it was frightening then, but when those muscles and joints were to be rendered capable of motion on October 22, it would become a thing that would rival any event on campus.

Okay, okay … While we at The GurU will be the first to admit we’re not Mary Shelley or Bram Stoker when it comes to scary stories, we do know what it takes to give U students a fright (apart from those midterms at the end of this month). From Odyssey Dance Theatre’s Thriller to the story of Ted Bundy, The GurU has all you need to have the ultimate celebration of the creepiest day of the year. So sit back, crack open The GurU and prepare for the ultimate Halloween thriller.

It was a dark and stormy night...

City Life 3

It’s that time of year again! Halloween is just around the corner, and people everywhere are making the essential preparations: loading up on candy, going out to see scary movies and of course, looking for ways to be scared. Haunted houses, a long-standing tradition for the season, are perfect venues to stare into the abyss, test your mettle, and give that certain special someone an excuse to hold you tightly. Three such houses are virtually in your backyard here at the University of Utah. Visit and get your scare on tonight!

Nightmare on 13th

Voted one of America’s scariest haunts, Nightmare on 13th is probably also Utah’s most famous haunted house. Located at 300 W. and 1300 S., this ominous castle-like building will have your nerves on end before even setting foot inside. Assuming the ghouls haunting the castle grounds don’t chase you away, the immersive Nightmare Theater pre-show might have you second-guessing your limits. Should you decide to brave the journey, be prepared for a 35,000 square-foot house of horrors populated by terror experts with decades of experience. Call (801) 467-8100 or visit www.night-mareon13th.com. Admission is $20. The castle is open every day (except Sundays) in October from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Castle of Chaos

Yet another highly-ranked Utah haunted house, the Castle of Chaos is celebrating its ten year anniver-sary with what it promises to be its biggest, baddest, most bone-chilling haunt ever. Located on 120 W. 3300 S., Castle of Chaos is sure to have your heart thumping. Castle of Chaos prides itself on mixing multiple psychological elements to screw with your head. Combining the efforts of over 100 actors and special-effects masters, the Castle of Chaos prom-ises to be an experience horror lovers won’t soon forget. Call (801) 461-4444 for more information or visit www.castleofchaos.com. Castle of Chaos is open every day in October from 7 to 10 p.m. except Sundays. Tickets begin at $12.

Nightmare Mansion

The twisted minds behind Castle of Chaos weren’t content with only one haunted house so they went and built another one at 5576 S. Redwood Road. It doesn’t matter what you are or aren’t afraid of, the skilled frigh-tologists of Nightmare Mansion know how to make you scream. How far will you go? How much can you stand? There’s only one real way to find out! Visit www.nightmaremansion.com now or call (801) 461-4444 for more information. Nightmare Mansion is open every day in October except Sundays from 7 to 10 pm. Prices range from $12 to $28.

Despite common belief, there are scar-ier things are lurking around Salt Lake than your cumulative college GPA. With our flashlights in hand, we journeyed in search of the creepiest haunts in the val-ley. From hobbits to serial killers, these local hotspots of paranormal activity are full of creatures and the unknown that will give you the heebie-jeebies.

Emo’s GraveLegend goes that Jacob Moritz, a German immigrant, was the first devil worshipper in Utah. After his death, his urn was placed in a tomb in the Salt Lake Cemetery, but long ago the urn was broken by vandals and his ashes scattered. Now, if you walk three times around his grave, chanting the nickname his friend’s gave him—Emo—the ghost of Moritz will appear. The cemetery closes at 6 p.m., but the only time his ghost will appear is at night.

Location: Salt Lake Cemetery, south end, just east of P Street

City Life 5

HobbitvilleA small neighborhood nestled in Westminster, Hobbitville (Allen Park), according to local legend, is home to “little” people have lived for a number of years. Although whether or not such folklore is true has yet to be verified, countless people have visited and seen it with their own eyes. The residents of the neighborhood seem to get quite angry when people stroll through the neighborhood for entertainment. Ideally, those in search of a scare should visit at night; although bear in mind the gate reads “No Trespassing.”

Location: 1300 East 1815 South

Shilo InnIn the 1978, a distraught woman named Rachel—whose husband claimed to be God—decided to end it all for herself and her seven children. From an 11th story balcony, Rachel coerced or forced her children off the balcony before jumping to her death. Only one of the children survived, and the husband—believing the FBI was after him, killed himself just three days later. Manifestations of a woman and children have been seen near the first floor pool area and gaming room, and there are reports of disembodied laughter on the eleventh floor.

Location: 206 South West Temple

Victim of the Beast: 666Located in a inconspicuous corner of the Salt Lake City Cemetery, Lilly E. Gray’s gravestone, where the inscription would read “beloved mother” or “loving wife,” only reads, “VICTIM OF THE BEAST 666.” Many people have attempted to research this stone and Lilly, but strangely always hit a brick wall, as there is no information aside from her obituary, which states only that she died in a local hospital. Just seeing the grave will give you goosebumps.

Location: Salt Lake Cemetery, Go to the intersection at 1200 East and 255 North. Face away from houses and head into the cemetery. On the left hand side.

Gravity HillAlthough the stories vary, the stories surrounding Memory Grove and City Creek Canyon are all equally chilling. Most popular stories revolve around popular legend that in 1980s, before the canyon flooded, a girl was struck and killed by a drunk driver and her body never found. Year after year similar accidents occurred before the road was closed. Now, should you drive around the canyon, put your car in neutral at the lowest point, the spirit will push your car up the hill.

Location: Go up B St., turn left, go up the hill to 11th Ave., go straight to Bonneville Blvd. You come to a point where another road leaves the main road and veers uphill to the left. Stay on the main road another 100 feet, stop, put your car in neutral.

R.I.P.J. Smith“I told you I was sick.”

University life is great, isn’t it? The parties, the independence, the friends … unfortunately, a lot of the things that make college so much fun also tend to get in the way of, you know, work and studying. So, if you’re sick of your roommate’s late-night Halo marathons and your favorite U building is hosting some sort of noisy convention, check out these cool off-campus locations to study in a more conducive atmosphere.

The Main Library(210 E 400 S)

One of the great marvels of modern Utah architecture is also the best place in town for peaceful, productive and air-conditioned schoolwork. Placed in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, right off TRAX, the library is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays through Sat-urdays, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Multiple levels of secluded study tables with big windows make for the perfect space to study.

Local Coffee Shops

Any true student knows the value of caffeine during a study session and there’s no better to get your fix while studying at one of Salt Lake’s local cafes. Check out: Beans N’ Brew at 906 S. 500 E.; Sugarhouse Coffee at 1045 E. 2100 S.; Coffee Garden at 898 E. 900 S.; and Coffee Noir at 1035 E. and 200 S.

Your Mom’s/Your Friend’s Mom’s House

Sure, most of us are looking for ways to eventually get out of our par-ents’ basements, but who’s to deny that visiting the folks’ place has its benefits? Open 24 hours a day, your mom’s has an abundance of food you don’t have to pay for, no awkward high schools friends to run into and when you need a break, all those awesome old-school Sega video games. What more could you want in a study session? If your folks don’t live in the Salt Lake valley, make friends with someone whose do.
