Remember, remember the 5th November... as the rhyme goes. If you are celebrating bonfire night, I hope you have an enjoyable and safe evening.Hopefully, you have read the exciting news on the front page about the Parish Council's plans for a new sports centre including swimming pool. At this early stage, there are lots of things to consider - not least how we're going to fund it. This aside, it is important to note that we must not be without a decent sports facility in Warsop.Members of the Parish Council went on a site visit in August. Whilst there, the sports centre were taking delivery of some 'new' spinning bikes. I use the term 'new' quite loosely - they were actually 3rd hand having been passed through 2 other centres in Mansfield before arriving here due to those centres receiving new (in the true definition of the word) stock. To me, that perfectly summed up the utter contempt that certain factions within the District Council hold the people of Warsop. I, for one, sincerely hope that we can bring the plans to fruition as it's about time that Warsop residents had a new asset.

Stuart Moody - Editor, Warsop & District News

General Tasks and garden maintenanceTidy borders Cut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly (sedum, astilbes and grasses for example). They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease.Clean out the greenhouseClear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free!Drain and lag...Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.Prepare your soil for next yearFor beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould - in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier! For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms! If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below whilst great chunks of wet clay will remain rock solid over the winter and become nigh on impossible to break up next year.PlantingPlant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes (see later). Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour first and protect against frost and wind if exposed.Rake fallen leavesFallen leaves prevent light and air getting to plants and lawns and these dark, damp conditions are also heaven on earth for slugs, snails and an unwholesome array of fungal diseases. However, don’t waste these tumbled treasures - given time they will decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake them up and throw into a simple frame made of chicken wire or wood. Failing that, black bin liners spiked with air holes will do if you can bear the sight, but remember to dampen the leaves first should they be dry (some hope!). Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (2 in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and FREE home-grown substitute for peat. Don’t be tempted to use rose leaves, which can easily carry infection, or evergreens, which take too long to rot down.

LawnsRule one - keep off the lawn when it is sodden or frozen - a startling degree of damage is remarkably easily inflicted.Rake up fallen leaves regularly - left in place they will encourage fungal disease and bare patches and make your final cut when the grass is reasonably dry with the blades set high.Scarify and spike to improve surface drainage and aeration and apply autumn feed and moss killer if you didn’t do it last month.New turf can be laid, weather permitting, and if you are planning to sow or lay a new lawn next spring, there is still time to prepare the ground so it is in tip top condition.Book your mower in for servicing - leaving it until spring just places your machine firmly at the back of a long queue!

BirdsWinter is tough for birds - as temperatures fall, regular supplies of food and fresh water become ever more important to help them survive the cold months and emerge in good condition for the breeding season next year.Do make sure clean water is available, especially in freezing conditions. Buy good quality bird food and fat or suet balls, ensure feeding stations are well out of the way of cats and enjoy the company of our feathered friends throughout the winter!Happy Gardening www.thegardencentregroup.co.uk

Frack Free Warsop held an exhibition at the start of October which was well attended by people who wanted to know more about Ineos’ proposals to turn our area into an unconventional gas field. Quite a bit of interest was prompted by seismic survey trucks and equipment starting to appear in the fields around our homes! Thanks to the efforts of our Chairman, Warsop Parish Councillor Roy Butler, the event was televised on BBC East Midlands, helping to further raise awareness that this threat is real and is happening NOW.

Cllr Roy Butler interviewed by BBC East Midlands Today at the Frack Free Warsop Exhibition

People attending the exhibition came from Warsop and surrounding communities, wanting to find out more about how the industry’s processes will affect their homes and families. After reading the information on display and chatting to some of our volunteers, there were several concerns that were raised by people at the exhibition, most notably the following:

Coal Mining AreaAs our area is riddled with old mine workings, a number of people were deeply concerned that this industry could even contemplate drilling here. Several people who worked in the coal mining industry stated that our area is heavily faulted and that some old workings had been abandoned without structural support making collapse more likely. Consequently, there could be a risk of surface damage should fracking take place and trigger seismic activity, as happened at Preese Hall in Lancashire in 2011. An independent report commissioned by Cuadrilla at the time stated “most likely, the repeated seismicity was induced by direct injection of fluid into the fault zones” lubricating the rocks and allowing them to slip past each other, triggering earthquakes. In turn, the earthquakes caused deformation of the well casing, and subsequent leaking of gas within the well (Greenpeace; Unearthed, 15.6.2015). Well integrity failure is what could allow the toxic chemicals and gases involved in fracking processes to seep into surrounding rock; if it happens adjacent to water bearing-rock, this could lead to contamination of the aquifer. It was reported in the Northwich Guardian that, in a debate on fracking, Professor Peter Styles of Keele University said “There’s no way you would ever do fracking in any area of previous… coal extraction because it’s too dangerous.”Concern was also expressed over the lack of clarification from the government on exactly what recompense there would be for any damage to land and property should sudden subsidence or collapse occur and whether Ineos would be able to use the fact that our area is already prone to mining induced seismic activity to escape responsibility.

House Prices and Insurance PremiumsOther concerns raised related to house purchases and house insurance costs; it came to light that when buying property in the Warsop area, searches have not revealed the situation regarding Ineos’ permits to carry out exploratory drilling across the countryside. The Petroleum Exploration Development Licences held by Ineos for our area were awarded in 2015 and the government have been actively supporting the industry, yet our group were informed by a recent house purchaser that no information appeared on searches carried out for their house buying process as recently as a few months ago. The government carried out a study in 2014 into “Shale Gas Rural Economy Impacts” which controversially indicated:• an anticipated reduction in property prices of up to 7% in areas near drilling operations• higher insurance premiums for homes within 5 miles of shale gas sites due to the risk of explosions • residents health could suffer due to noise and pollution

Warsop's Fight to be

FRACK FREE • fracking risks would industrialise previously pristine rural areas and cause increased traffic and congestion • locals may miss out on most of the skilled jobs the industry creates. So even though we have had the seismic survey process taking place around us for several months and Ineos actively looking for sites for exploratory drill pads, it seems prospective house buyers have not been informed! A poll in October last year, reported on the Tepilo.com website, showed that 64% of those surveyed would be reluctant to buy a house near a fracking site.

Radioactive Waste Treatment and DisposalSome discussion took place relating to rumours of plans to use the future abandoned wells as storage for radioactive waste; scientists at Sheffield University recently won an award for research work on “Deep Borehole Disposal of Nuclear Waste”! The flow back fluid produced by fracking is a NORM waste, (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) as it picks up naturally occurring radioactive materials during the underground processes. The issue of disposal of millions of gallons of toxic, radioactive flow back fluid also caused concern. According to Drill or Drop website, a site has been identified by campaigners as a possible destination for fracking waste at FCC Environment Treatment Facility in Ecclesfield, Sheffield, which has appropriate environmental permits to treat fracking waste and which is now covered by Ineos’ Injunction! Campaigners fear the treated effluent could eventually be sent to the Blackburn Meadows treatment site and discharged into the River Don. Other concerns raised related to the high number of HGV tankers needed to transport all this radioactive waste along our roadways to the treatment sites, possibly several thousand movements per well.

Ineos Safety RecordVarious other topics arose including Ineos’ poor track record on health and safety and the dependence of the government on self-regulation by the industry in meeting regulation standards, together with what impact there might be on our countryside especially for Sherwood Forest and other sites of historical and natural interest.

By and large, general reactions from members of the public who attended seemed to be a sense of disbelief, puzzlement and anger that the government could be in favour of something that has so many hazards for the public and for the environment; many people put their thoughts into action by signing our petitions and planning objections. The event was rounded off with an informative and thought-provoking look at the unconventional gas industry by guest speaker Mr Dennis May, who described the fracking process, the impacts of the industry and gave a look at our existing energy supplies and where the growth sectors are (clue: green in colour!).If you missed the exhibition and want to find out more, a good starting point is the Medact report “Health and Fracking” and its recent update “Shale Gas Production in England” (www.medact.org). There are lots of informative websites online – have a look at Friends of the Earth, Frack Free Nottinghamshire, Drill or Drop, or visit any of the Facebook pages for the local groups, new ones popping up almost daily in response to the imminent threat of this industry in our area.

Council dog service wins RSPCA award hat-trickMansfield District Council's Dog Control Service has achieved a 2017 Gold Stray Dog Footprint Award from animal welfare charity, the RSPCA, for the third year in a row. This prestigious award ensures that all stray dogs are treated humanely and safely while under the care of the council. This includes: • having an effective out of hours service • the provision to treat any sick animal • assessment and re-homing policies • a commitment to scanning and checking the ID of all recovered dogs • a micro-chipping service for a minimal fee • promotion of responsible dog ownership • appropriate training for officers in dog handling, behaviour and welfare.Since micro-chipping was made a legal requirement for all dogs last year, the number of stray dogs picked up in the district has decreased from 547 in 2015/16 to 460 in 2016/17. The percentage of identifiable stray dogs picked up has improved since micro-chipping was made a legal requirement, from 61% in 2015/16 to 64.5% in 2016/17.And the number of dogs reunited with their owners after being picked up by the council has also improved. In 2015/16, 74% of dogs picked up by the council were reunited with their owners and in 2016/17, that had risen to 78.75%. The majority of those dogs were pets who were picked up by the Dog Control Officer, scanned for a micro-chip, identified and returned directly to the owners without having to enter kennels. Where this happens, there is no fee for returning a stray to their owners - providing their pets are not recorded by the council as being regularly picked up as a stray. Efforts by the council to reunite stray dogs with their owners and find homes for unclaimed dogs has included an increasingly popular campaign on Facebook. The council's Facebook page publishes photographs of missing and abandoned dogs which have achieved a staggering 950,852 views over the past year - up from 778,629 the previous year.Cllr Bill Drewett, Portfolio Holder for Safer Communities at Mansfield District Council, said: "Well done to the Dog Control Service for their 'hat-trick' in offering a golden service to our four-legged customers who have gone walkabout rather than walkies."And what an amazing response from the public in trying to help reunite these lost pets on Facebook! It is proving a really popular tool and, along with micro-chipping, is helping both to bring down the number of strays and increase the number of lost dogs reunited with their owners."If you find a stray dog, try to secure it and contact our Dog Control Service on 01623 463189 (01623 463050 out of hours) or email [email protected]. If you have any concerns about dangerous dogs, contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101. Photographs of stray dogs are published on facebook.com/mymansfielduk.

BEN BRADLEY MP DROP-IN SESSIONS & SURGERIES

Your Local MP’s Update

I’ve been at Conservative Party Conference this month, and I made sure I took the chance to put across constituents’ views on Brexit when I met with Brexit Minister Steve Baker. He was very clear that we are leaving the EU in March 2019 and that by that point a substantial amount of control will be back in our own hands, including having full control of our own laws. The implementation period that's been discussed is after we've left, and is to help UK business to transition and protect jobs in this country. The Government are committed to honouring the referendum result and getting the best deal possible, and I'll continue to ensure that Warsop has a say in the process. I also had the opportunity to get up on the main stage before the Prime Minister’s speech and talk about Mansfield live on the BBC, to tell the world about what amazing potential we have. I have begun a series of meetings designed to bring different organisations together to talk about the issues associated with homelessness. We need to all work together to see if we can find a solution, so I am bringing together the councils, charities, the police and local businesses. The first meeting brought together people from the various councils to talk about how I can help them, and resulted in a really good discussion and points for me to take up with the Minister. I want to hear about the things that matter to you here in Warsop because I know you often feel that you don’t have as much of a voice as residents in town. That’s not fair and I want to help, so I’m sending out a survey across as much of Warsop as I can over the coming months to get your views. Please do take part (it’s free!) and let me know what you think.Ben Bradley

A walk through our local woods or a visit to the country parks at Edwinstowe, Clumber, Rufford or Thoresby Park will be rewarded by sights of changing leaf colours and carpets of fallen leaves. If there have not been any hard frosts the colourful displays of fungi can be equally special. It is good to note that hedgehogs are doing well in some parts of Warsop. Numbers have fallen in recent years, partly due to changes in garden fashions. Concrete plinths around gardens, the loss on untidy areas and the increase in paved areas may have contributed to their decline. Any piles of wood or leaves can provide a winter home for a hedgehog although a custom built shelter is even better. If there are hedgehogs around your home this may be suitable gift to request for Christmas. If you are planning a bonfire remember to check it for hedgehogs, preferably by moving the materials to the fire site just before you light it.The Footpaths Group are partners in the Future Greens project that involves carrying out conservation-based tasks on green spaces and on the rights of way network within the Warsop area and will help to enhance the local area. If you are interested in taking part in these tasks on one morning a week get in touch with Andy Hollis at [email protected] or 07708875094. This type of work can be good fun, good exercise and a fine way of contributing to your community or gaining skills that may help with your career.Hedge cutting will be one of the priorities on our work session in the next couple of months. Several hedgerows need annual management to prevent them from invading public footpaths. We try to leave the hedges crops of haws, sloes or hips until birds have consumed these hedgerow fruits.Egrets have returned to the Hills and Holes again this winter. If you have seen a bird that looks like a white heron, it is an egret. There are now two types of egret around Warsop. Little Egrets have been visitors for the past few winters and this year a Great White Egret has been seen at Budby Flash during September and October. Little Egrets are about half the size of a heron and have a dark bill and yellow feet. The Great White Egret is around the size of a heron with a yellow bill and black feet and legs. Our next group walk will be on Saturday 18th November. We haven't decided where to go yet but I suspect it will involve woodlands and fungi! Contact us if you would like to join us or check our Facebook page facebook.com/Warsop1816.

Silver gilt for MansfieldMansfield has been awarded a silver gilt in the East Midlands in Bloom competition.

The district was just two points off a gold and lost out to Northampton which topped the City category. The judges were taken on a tour of the district in July, including parks, allotments, community gardens, local nature reserves, as well as the town centre. Mansfield BID won its category for the second time and were awarded a Silver Gilt Award and also the Judges Award for the improvements around Tesco Valley to rear of Four Seasons, for creating a bio-diverse retreat and wildflower garden.During the whistle-stop tour, judges spoke with residents from Vale Court, volunteers from Maun Conservation group and pupils from King Edward Primary School, who made sticky card collages using flowers and leaves found at Quarry Lane Nature Reserve.

In Mansfield Woodhouse, they visited the Little Roots Children's Community Allotment at Longyards allotments and toured St Edmund’s Church Community Orchard, meeting fundraisers and volunteers.Last year, Mansfield also achieved a silver gilt award in the East Midlands in Bloom cities category, winning the City category, and was awarded a special Judges' award for improvements made to the River Maun conservation area and the environmental education and involvement of children. The competition is judged on work to improve surroundings through the use of plants and landscaping and how towns create sustainable environments and develop community projects.Cllr Andrew Tristram, Portfolio Holder for the Environment and Wellbeing, said: “I would like to thank all the volunteers who do so much to make this district the green and pleasant place that it is.“Next year we will be trying our best to get that gold standard and reclaim the winning title in the City category."

Sherwood Win 1st for VegSherwood Junior School Gardening Club entered the ‘Our School’ section at The Mansfield Garden & Craft Festival on 2nd September 2017.

Our entry was a display of photographs showing the children planting, nurturing, growing and harvesting some of the 16 vegetables and fruit currently thriving in our garden. We were filled with pride to be awarded 1st place for our entry, considering our club started in late April this year and we had no idea what the judges were looking for! Several of our club members and parents turned up for the awards ceremony where our prizes were £100, a planter filled with gardening tools and bulbs, a plaque and a certificate. All of which are proudly displayed in the reception area of school. We also entered one of our runner beans into a competition at Rhubarb Farm, Langwith and again were very excited to be awarded 3rd place for our 17 inch bean. Our success has motivated us – not only to consider the Science, Health and competitive aspects of our club but also to inspire other schools to make the most of their gardens. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Ken Scott from the very bottom of our hearts for making our success possible! His hard work and commitment has inspired us all to be ‘gardeners of the future’. He really is our inspiration! Mrs Norma Johnson, Sherwood Junior School

The Friends of ThynghoweThynghowe and the forgotten heritage of Sherwood

Around November 6th there will be a series of events around the country marking the 800th anniversary of the Charter of the Forest. This charter would have had an impact on the lives of Warsop folk as it tackled the worst abuses of Forest Law which applied to all the land within Sherwood Forest. In the years leading up to the charter the boundary of Sherwood had been extended to include most of Nottinghamshire but the charter restored the boundary to its earlier line that followed the River Meden.Market Warsop would be inside the Forest with Church Warsop outside and free from Forest Law. However, things did not turn out to be that straightforward! (More next month, or come along to the Old Warsop Society's meeting in March for the full saga)The Friends of Thynghowe Autumn Workshop will be held on Saturday 11th November in the classroom at Sherwood Pines between10am and 2pm. This will another of our popular workshop sessions where we provide a forum for experts and enthusiasts to pool their knowledge and theories about the past of Sherwood Forest. Topics will include the latest research into Thynghowe, the impact of the 1217 Charter of the Forest on northern Sherwood Forest and a look at how old maps illustrate the evolution of routes through the Forest around Thynghowe. No need to book, just turn up. Park in the main Sherwood Pines car park (charges apply). Tea and coffee will be available and it’s not far to the cafe.On Friday 17th November you are welcome to join us at 10am when we meet at the Warsop Windmill forest barrier for a few hours in the forest managing the landscape around Thynghowe. Tasks could include clearing the birch and bracken regrowth on the slopes of Thynghowe, restoring the ancient hedgerow alongside the track leading to Thynghowe from the north by planting hawthorn and checking for rhododendron regrowth on the areas previously cleared. Good fun and good exercise - and there may be cake!

Warsop Men's Probus After a minute silence for deceased  member Bill Jackson President Hugh Ashton  introduced new member Mike Wojciechowski. After a short business meeting  members had a talk by Peter Birchinall entitled ''Life and Times of an old Rocker'' Peter, like many young teenagers wanted to play a guitar and paid £20 for his first one and he could eventually play a few chords. Later he talked his way into a group by claiming he could play Bass, he then bought a bass guitar for £75 complete with an amp and had lessons and in two weeks was playing in the group 'Thym'. He played with them for 10 years and told of his experiences in clubs,  pubs, hospitals and old people's homes. After a comfort break in the stable bar 18 members had lunch in the Fitzherbert room. The next meeting will be October 18th at the Parish Centre when member Bill Power will talk about his award of his BEM.  Hugh Ashton, President

Warsop Parish Church Retreat, 22-24 September The weekend retreat was held at the Hayes Conference Centre in Swanwick and was attended by 23 members from St Peter and St Paul’s, Warsop, and St Augustine’s, Sookholme.  In our meetings together we were led by Rev’d Jennie Sharpe on the themes of “Hospitality”, “Hospitable God”, and “Hospitable Church”.  In all this the Parable of the Prodigal Son provided a focus for our thoughts and prayers.  On Saturday afternoon some enjoyed a walk from Matlock by the River Derwent and some visited Cromford Mills and  the Canal.  On Sunday morning we joined together for a celebration of Holy Communion led by Rev’d Angela Fletcher.  Fun, friendship and excellent food made for a most enjoyable and worthwhile time together.  Thanks to Rev’ds Angela and Jennie, and Claire Melless for all their work in planning and preparing for the Retreat.Charles & Frances McLaughlin

A Poignant Moment by Steve Dunn

Artistic WarsopIn this feature, we are offering a chance for the many talented artists we have residing in our parish to showcasing their artwork.Above is a seasonal masterpiece submitted by returning artist Steve Dunn. Steve had these comments about his art work:"This piece is called 'A poignant moment'. Because it would seem summer has gone, I thought I'd try something autumnal. "It's turned out a bit melancholic I think, a couple, perhaps an old farmer & his wife, stood by themselves in their field next to their bonfire, watching it burn away whilst in the distance it's obvious others are having lots of fun."More of my work can be found on my Facebook page 'Stevie Dunn Art'. Commissions accepted. Thanks."If you would like your artwork featured, please email a good quality image saved as a jpeg to [email protected]

Thanks go to all the members of the group and the volunteers who turned up on the day to lend a hand to remove the fallen trees blocking the water flow of the river. It was a brilliant turn out! Also not forgetting the ladies who provided the drinks and sandwiches and a big thank you to the gentleman who offered to take away and dispose of all the rubbish.Three days of hard work saw a vast difference opening up the view of the park to passers by. The friends group and volunteers are to make a day available each week  to finish the work,' but as they say many hands make light work?Times and dates that we shall be on the Carr's will be placed on the notice boards. We provide the tools, gloves and good company, if you can spare an hour we would be grateful. Come and join us!Future plans are to continue with a general maintenance of the banks in the spring to allow the flora and fauna to establish naturally. Our next meeting will be: Tuesday 7th November at 6-30pm, at Plough Inn, Church Street, Warsop.

Friends and volunteer's spent three days removing dead wood and clearing the river banks of rubbish and over grown shrubbery in an effort to allow the ground to breath new life along its length.

Woman to pay £577 for dropping cigarette buttA Mansfield woman has been ordered to pay a total £577 for dropping a cigarette butt in the town.  The littering case, prosecuted by Mansfield District Council, under Section 11 Environmental Protection Act 1990, was heard by Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on 6 September 2017.Rachel Childerley, 29, of Linton Close, indicated no plea to the court and the case was proved in her absence. She was fined £220 and ordered to pay costs of £313.87 and a victim surcharge of £44. The court was told that she was spotted dropping a cigarette end by a council Neighbourhood Warden near Oak Tree Primary School in Mansfield on 15 March 2017.After the case, Cllr Bill Drewett, Portfolio Holder for Safer Communities, said: "We want Mansfield to be a clean and tidy place to live in, work in and visit, and cigarette ends are considered to be litter. "This woman had the opportunity to pay a £75 Fixed Penalty Notice for dropping litter but she failed to pay it which is why she is now facing a much heftier financial penalty as the case was taken to court. "The messages from this court case result are clear: do not ignore a Fixed Penalty Notice issued by Mansfield District Council because we will take you to court if you don't pay it, and, ultimately, don't drop litter in this district."

Cyclist ordered to pay £580A 22-year-old Mansfield man has been ordered to pay a total of £584 for cycling in a prohibited area in the town centre.Christopher Cobb, of Commercial Gate, was prosecuted by Mansfield District Council for breaching the council’s Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO). The case was heard at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on 27 September 2017.He indicted no plea to the charge and the case was proved in his absence. He was fined £440 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £100 and victim surcharge of £44.The court was told that on 11 April 2017, a council Neighbourhood Warden noticed a man riding a mountain bike from the Market Place towards Mansfield Library, which is prohibited under the PSPO. The cyclist was advised of this and he dismounted. But about 10 minutes later the warden saw the same man riding his bike again in West Gate. The man dismounted but was stopped by the warden and issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice. After the case, Cllr Bill Drewett, Portfolio Holder for Safer Communities, said: “Cycling has been prohibited in the pedestrianised area of Mansfield town centre to protect pedestrians. "There are alternative routes around the town centre or cyclists can act in a responsible fashion and get off and push their bicycles through the town centre.“This cyclist had the opportunity to pay a much lower fixed penalty of £100 but chose to ignore it which is why he is now facing a much higher penalty as a result of the case having to go to court.”
