This is a story that happened a long time ago. The location was somewhere ona south tlantic island! a"out #our hundred miles o# the coast o# $ra%il! Southmerica! as the story goes. $ut lets not get ahead o# oursel&es!! #or the storydoes not start there. 't starts in Syracuse! New Yor(! )S! on a street named*elaware.

There in +,-,! li&ed a man named Thomas oegle and his wi#e /arge. Soon!un(nown to them they were to e0perience a catastrophic e&ent. This terri"le

e&ent would change their li#e #ore&er. Thomas was a scientist (nown around theworld. 't was "ecause o# his wor( and (nowledge! that he and his wi#e /arge1s li#eand world would soon come to a crashing halt.

Thomas oegle! was commissioned to in&estigate a mysterious island in thesouth tlantic. Here a party o# e0plores went and su"se2uently disappeared! a#ter#alling gra&ely ill. Thomas put together a do%en o# the #inest scientist and e0pertsthat he (new o# His wi#e /arge wanted to accompany him on the &oyage.gainst his "etter 3udgment he said /arge could go i# she wasn1t an imposition.



So o## they set! sailing out o# New Yor( 4ity. The un(nown and what e&erdangers lay in wait in the seas they chartered! lay ahead. 't would ta(e wee(s tillthey reached their destination. Plenty o# time #or them all to imagine the outcome o# their ill #aded trip.

't was early springtime and the seas pro&ed especially calm! #or the tlanticOcean. The ship was slow so their arri&al would "e late! "ut they weren1talarmed. E&ery"ody was "usy in studying their indi&idual tas(. They all werewondering what their #ate might "e! "ut each was a#raid to as(.

The tension on the ship you could cut li(e a (ni#e. The &oyage was long andtedious! "ut /arge too( it in stride. Tom oegle was ama%e at his wi#e1s emotionsunder duress. She had remar(a"le restraint! which he gladly mentioned.

The &oyage was ta(ing longer "ecause o# an eerie calm sea. The closer they got to the island a cloudy mist was all they could see. Thomas

oegle (ept a 3ournal! each day he ma(es an entry. '# there was somethingmysterious he wanted it elementary.

Thomas (ept writing in his 3ournal a"out the strange circumstances. O# calmsea! with #og and mist and an occasional #lying #ish that would 3ump out o# thewater and glide #or #i#teen to twenty #eet. oegle also notice a strange #ungusgrowing on the side o# the ship. Se&eral people de&eloped a cough and had greenmucous o# their lips

They were only days #rom doc(ing on the mysterious island. The party sensetheir appending doom and the #ear they were compiling. Thomas and /arge

could tell the uneasiness o# all that were a"oard. oegle had to ta(e a stand hecould no longer ignore.

Thomas made an announcement to e&eryone on the ship5 We1&e "eencommissioned to do a 3o" here. ' (now you all are uneasy a"out what1s "eenhappening to us the last wee( or so. $ut we ha&e a 3o" to do! that we1re "eingpaid #or. ' don1t want any lip. We will lea&e this God #orsa(en place when the 3o"is done.

s they doc(ed the ship and wal(ed upon the shore. The "each! the land andthe trees were co&ered with #ungus and their spores Thomas could not "elie&e

what he saw! he stopped to clear his thoughts. oegle (new what he was #acing adanger that could not "e #ought out in any normal way.

The harm to his crew was already done. He remem"ered his past e0periencewith #ungus was not a happy one. 't was the hardest thing to (ill! &irtuallyindestructi"le. So Thomas made a decision no one could lea&e! their #ate wassealed in an ine&ita"le end.

ll that was le#t #or Thomas was to ma(e entries into his 3ournal. 't was their



only proo# to (eep their memory eternal and with the hope that thedocumentation would possi"ly pro&ide some answer. ll a"oard now were sic(including Thomas and /arge. They were all in#ected "y the #ungus and the spotswere getting larger.

His 3ournal would tell the story o# the horror they all went through. Their

e&entual demise o# which they all couldn1t help "ut (now. What was this mystery#ungus! where did it come #rom6 Would it spread through out the world ande&entually we all would die.

So one day grew into another and the strong attended to the wea(. /argepro&ided as much care to her #ailing hus"and Thomas. His situation loo(edmighty "lea(. Thomass &ision was getting "lurry . He could only see up close.When writing in his 3ournal! he had to "ring the "oo( close to his nose to see.

Thomas was getting wea( now! in his 3ournal he had trou"le ma(ing entries.$ut as #ar as documenting the #acts! it "ecame e7elementary. He reached o&er to

touch /arge! all he #elt was slimmy grunge. s he loo(ed in horror! all he saw wasa Grey Wet Sponge.
