GREENFIELD HILL CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH
FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 9:30 A.M.SERVICE
We love kids! But sometimes services are too long for even the happiest child. So ... • For infants we have nursery care in the Church House, first floor. • For children age 3 through 2nd grade, summer Church School takes place following the Chidlren’s Message • And if your kids get squirmy, the Church Parlor has toys; the service is amplified in the Parlor
and the seats are comfortable!
Prelude The Musical Clocks F. J. Haydn (1792) (Written for a famous musical clock in Vienna.
Played on a flute organ operated by the clock mechanism)
Call to Worship in unison:
Listen!
Listen, we say. Listen to the breeze. The waves. The birds. The trees. The children.
The laughter.
Listen, we say, in Church. Listen to the voice of God coming to us in
lots of ways. Listen to God speak to us in ancient scriptures, in
old hymns, in preacher’s words, in silence, in a kind word, in a
friendly welcome, an offering, a benediction.
Listen, also, Holy God – listen to our words, our hearts, our prayer.
In litening we worship.
Amen.
Silent Prayer
* Summer Chorus Sweet, Sweet Spirit (sung twice) Hymnal, no. 261
* Prayer of Confession: We confess, Loving God, to mistakes, errors, failures, shortcomings,
sins, large and small, known and unknown, in thought, word, or
deed. We bring You our worst asking You to help us to our best.
Amen.
(silence for individual prayers of confession)
3
* Hymn Joy to the World Hymnal, no. 143
(A Christmas reminder during summer’s heatwave)

Invitation to the Lord’s Table
Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen.
Sharing the Bread and Cup (All are warmly invited to receive Communion. TODAY’s Holy Communion will be shared without interruption. Alida will introduce it, the Deacons will bring the bread and
the cup. Take each as it is brought to us. )
Children’s Dismissal Our younger children (ages 3 through those entering 2nd grade) are invited to the Church House for church school class. Parents may pick up their children immediately following the
worship service in Room 4, on the lower level.

Words to Today’s Music
Thine, O Lord Is the Greatness from I Chron.29:11-13 (Pew Bible, pg 399)
Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power and the glory, the victory and the
majesty; for all that is in the heaven and earth is thine. Both riches and honour
come of thee. In thine hand is power and might; to make great and to give
strength unto all.
Now therefore, our God, we thank thee and praise thy glorious name. Thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all.
Words to Thee Will I Love
Thee will I love; my strength, my tower, my joy, my crown!
Thee will I love with all my power, in all my works, and Thee alone,
Till Thy pure fire fills all my soul with chaste desire. I thank Thee, uncreated Sun, that Thy bright beams on me have shined.
I thank Thee who hast overthrown my foes and healed my wounded mind,
whose enliv'ning voice bids my freed heart in Thee rejoice.
Thee will I love- my joy,my crown, my God! beneath Thy frown or smile.
Thy scepter or Thy rod, what though my fleshand my heart decay? Thee shall I
love in endless day! Thee will I love, my Lord, my God.
Don’t forget… refreshments on the front lawn immediately following worship!
Come on out and enjoy!
Thank You!
You have given us an outstanding summer at Church. You
came to worship. You fed the hungry at our Soup Kitchen.
You led a 300 person workcamp to Appalachia. You taught
140 at Vacation Bible School. You volunteered for
Operation Hope’s Tag Sale, CONECT’s Voter Registration,
and CT Challenge’s Bike Ride for Cancer Survivors.
Thank you!

CHURCH NOTES
WELCOME! Worship happens when God and people come together. Church
exists to help that happen. Sunday services provide regularity, continuity,
intentionality. Your presence is the key ingredient.
NEXT WEEK’S SUNDAY SCHEDULE….
Sunday, September 9th – Kick-Off Sunday and Deacon’s Picnic!! * Worship at 9:00 and 10:30 am * Sunday School at 10:30 am (for this weekend ONLY) * Picnic for all at 11:30 am – food, music, bounce house, ice cream truck, kids crafts and games, and great people!!
Visitors: We are glad you are with us today. Want to know more? Take a bag
home from our Visitors’ Table, just outside the front door! If you are interested in
joining this church, please just speak with Alida!
At our service this morning you have been greeted by Deacon Ellen Waugh and
Junior Deacons Allison Milicia and Devenny Widmer. Junior Deacons
assisting with Church School are George Wyckoff and Amelia Yoder.
A note about children in worship: We love them! But if you’d prefer to enjoy
worship on your own, our Church Nursery for infants-toddlers is across the
street in the Church House. Special beepers/pagers are available to parents so
that they may be quietly contacted during the worship service if their child
misses them! If your child in worship becomes restless or unhappy, please make use
of the Parlor (through the double doors by the choir loft, or head outside and
through the side doors). There is a comfortable space there for your child to
play with toys and a speaker which carries the service!
A special thank you to our Member Involvement Board for the wonderful
refreshments after service! Join them out on the front lawn for refreshments
after the service to see friends, old and new!
Flowers on the altar are given by Lynn Davies in memory of her parents,
Nessie and Jim Rankin.

morning they will be talking about Birds of the Air.
Our church school classes share a morning snack during their class
time. If your child has any food allergies, we ask that you alert your
