These basins contain 10,000 – 12,000 cubic Km.
of economically extractable water
Over extraction in these basins has resulted in seawater intrusion in the coastal aquifers with TDS levels reaching 7000ppm in the Tripoli region
In a recent study conducted under the supervision of the UN Centre for Environment & Development in the Arab Region & Europe CEDARE, the Nubian Basin (of which Kufra is part)
was estimated at containing 373.3 x 10^12 m3.If the neighboring countries extract water at a rate of 1380
MCMY it is calculated that the reserve would last 4860 years.

The agricultural development plan aims to:
•Realize the highest possible rate of self-sufficiency in grain and fodder crops.
•Increase the capital investment and job opportunities in the agricultural sector.
•Produce raw materials for the food processing industry.
•Encourage and support agricultural settlement.
The agricultural development projects are being carried out in three regions in Libya:
•Benghazi Plains Region – net irrigated area 30,000 hectares 14,000 hectares to be developed as large farm projects.
•Jefara Plains Region (Tripoli) - net irrigated area 80,000 hectares 1,500 hectares to be developed as large farm projects.
•Al-Ghardabiya Plains Region (Sirt) - net irrigated area 20,000 hectares 5,400 hectares to be developed as large farm projects.
Investors with experience in the field are invited to participate in:
• Implementation• Operation• Maintenance• Management and product marketing
Of the large farm projects
American Companies have already invested in the development of Large Farm Projects:
- 1300 Hectares – Benghazi Plains Region (this will be increased to 14,000 Hectares in the future) - 800 Hectares – Tarhouna - Valmont Valley supplying Irrigation equipment - Case supplying agricultural equipment
Agricultural Land Developed 130,000 hectare approx. ( 20,000 farms )
About 100,000 existing farms will be supplemented with irrigation water from the project which will have great impact on their productivity and encourage the settlement of farmers and their families, hence a positive
impact on the value of their property
THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT
We can conclude that, adequate fresh water supplied by the gigantic GMRA project, have become an integral part of the infrastructure (including real estate) in all domestic, agricultural and industrial aspects, both in rural and urban areas, so as these areas grow, the need for infrastructure increase.
THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT
Which results in:Encouraging people in rural areas to stay in their land, due to Agricultural expansion.
THE GREAT MAN-MADE RIVER PROJECT
In urban areas, the real estate prices will escalate due to the improvement of the life standards.
