Rossi was the most famous Jewish musician ofthe late Italian Renaissance. For most of hisadult life he worked as a composer andperformer for the ducal court at Mantua. In anera when Jews enjoyed few legal rights orprivileges, Salamon Rossi was granted specialfavor. For example, in 1606 a ducal orderpermitted him to refrain from wearing theyellow badge that all Jews were required to wearat that time. Besides madrigals, trio sonatas, andother secular instrumental works, Rossi alsocomposed a significant collection of Jewishservice music, published in 1623. The title of thecollection, The Songs of Solomon, is a punningwordplay on Rossi’s own name, alluding to thebiblical Song of Songs. Psalm 128 is a six-partwork from this collection, which treats eachphrase of text with a new musical idea. Varietyis created by the use of differing numbers ofvoices, meter change, imitation, and aconcluding polyphonic treatment of the text“shalom al yisrael.”
