    THE HISTORY OF DISCOVERY DAY

    WRITTEN BY: LEONARDO AKAGAC

A man set sail from the calm land of Spain to the boisterous

and rough Atlantic Ocean. This man only has one goal in his mind

which is to find a way to India. After 70 days of sailing the deep blue

oceans, the Columbus’ crew was filled with unrest and restlessness.

However, they finally spotted a green luscious land filled with spe-

cies that were undefined to the old world. Columbus set foot on the

island and spotted an abundance of a certain animals that he was

quite familiar with which was a turtle. Due to this, he named the

whole island “Las Tortugas” and then proceeded to search for other

land masses. 167 years later, Britain conquered Las Tortugas and

dubbed its name that we know so well which is the Cayman Islands.

To truly remember Christopher Columbus sailing to many

islands and land masses, 6 countries had decided to celebrate Dis-

covery Day which are Brazil, Haiti, Colombia, Dominican Republic,

Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands. However, Columbus never truly

discovered the Islands since Native Tribes such as the Caribs were

already on the land masses and islands before Columbus arrived.

Nevertheless, Cayman Islands and many other countries celebrate

Discovery Day by just taking a day off. At the end of the day, even

though discovery day is quite a misnomer of a name, it still good to

remember history of Cayman and how it came to be.

  • “God showed us how much he loved us by sending his one and only son into the world so we might have eternal life through Him.” 1 John 4:9

    WRITTEN BY: ZARIAH ANGLIN

The verse 1 John 4:9 is our

    monthly scripture verse for the

month of May. This verse emphasiz-

es how much love God has for us. He

was willing to make the ultimate

sacrifice so that we would be able to

live eternally in heaven with him.

However, just because he made this

sacrifice, does not mean we should take advantage of it by living our

lives actively sinning. We must repent, ask for forgiveness, and try to

live our lives in a way that follows his dreams for us. We must try to

lead good Christian lives, following the Bible’s teachings, worshipping

God, and treating others as we would want to be treated.

    PARENTS AND PASTRIES

Parents and Pastries was a fun event that combined a

thank you for parents and musical numbers from our students’

award-winning NCFA performances. The event featured perfor-

mances by The Grace Band, Recorder Ensembles, Infant Choir,

Key Stage One Choir and Key Stage Two Choir and more. The

older students performed a guitar piece, xylophone rendition of

The Flintstones and more by the Grace Band. Parents were treat-

ed to a dessert afterwards as a small token of our appreciation.

We thank you for your support parents and hope this event

brought a smile to your face!

  • BIOLUMINESCENCE BAY GRADE 8 FIELD TRIP

    WRITTEN BY: RILEIGH MCCARTNEY

The Grade 8 Class went to The Cayman Bio Bay on 4th of May for

a science fieldtrip to see the bioluminescent Protista that we have been

studying. Protista can be seen better by the human eye because Hurri-

cane Ivan caused the ocean to be more shallow and have warmer water,

which makes them more visible. The Protista is a microscopic organism

that can be seen all over the island. Anything that moves in the water

makes them glow. For example, if you take a cup of water from The Bio

Bay, you wouldn’t be able to see anything, but if you were to shake it, the

Protista would magically light up. In fact, they are too fast to be videoed

or photographed. As a class, we were offered snorkel gear and noodles

to play with and then went out exploring these tiny creatures for several

hours. We constantly noticed that even when you are not moving, the

Protista glow and they are like microscopic little flashlights. The more

you move, the brighter the flashlight. You can especially see them in the

seaweed and turtle grass. Unfortunately though, if you move too much,

you may get what seems like a sea itch or a jellyfish sting which can be

cured by ointment or vinegar. Despite this, we all had a fantastic time

and learned more about our home, the kingdom of Protista and our

    beautiful island. 3

  • FOCUS ON THE SENIORS!

    WRITTEN BY: KIMBERLY RUSSEL

The seniors had the pleasure to celebrate their hard work

and accomplishments, throughout their years being at Grace

Christian Academy. The phrase “Senior Week” is designated to

the seniors every year with the purpose of them either travelling

overseas, doing fun activities on island, or a stay-cation. This year,

the seniors did a combination of independent studying, at home

and participated in fun activities in Cayman. On Wednesday, May

23, seniors went to have lunch at Brooklyn and then watched a

movie afterwards- “The Life of the Party”. On Thursday, May

24th , seniors went to Locked Inn Cayman, which involved a num-

ber of rooms to escape from using a key, that is only found by

completing the puzzle. They were about five different rooms in

total and the seniors decided and chose the “Asylum” room. Origi-

nally, the seniors were supposed to attend the Crystal Cave and

also a Boat day. Due to the weather conditions the seniors were

unable to go forth with those events but is planning to have a boat

day closer to graduation. With the remaining days of the week,

Tuesday and Friday, the senior students had the opportunity to

study for their final exams, approaching in June. The seniors

could not have had a senior week without the help of every stu-

dent and teacher who supported us in our fundraising events.

With that, I want to say a special thank you to everyone who

helped us in raising money for our senior week, couldn't have

    done it without you!

School gets out on June 19th, and during our

summer break, I want to encourage the Students of

Grace Christian Academy to not use social media.

Instead you could relax on the beach, maybe snap a

few pictures and use them on Throwback Thursday

or start a new hobby. But let’s be honest, social me-

dia is hard to avoid. Even so, summer is a time off school, when we

are supposed to relax, so lets do that and rest up for next year. It’s

also a great time to study, review and read so we can become the

    best students we can be!

    WRITTEN BY: DAIRILYS

    EBANKS

On May 26, a few stu-

    dents attended the Junior

    Achievement banquet and two

    went home victorious! Ashley-

Jade Peharie tied for VP of Pro-

duction of the year. Besides that

    award, Ashley-Jade Peharie

along with Zariah Anglin were selected to attend the Next Generation

Leader conference in London, Ontario Canada. This will be their second

consecutive year present at the conference. This conference will span

from August 19-24 and students in the Junior Achievement program

from all around the globe will be present. During this conference stu-

dents will be put into teams and asked to complete different tasks as

well as sit in and listen to lectures. It is a marvelous experience and the

two young ladies are more than excited to be attending once again, con-

cluding their years in the program. We wish them the absolute best and

to have a fun and enjoyable time while representing our school as well

    as the island!

    INTERVIEW WITH MR. CRISPIN

    WRITTEN BY:: YANI DIAZ-GONZALEZ

Grace welcomes a new staff member, our new Bible

teacher, Mr. Crispín. So far he enjoys Grace and the family-like

feel to it. Before coming to Grace, he worked as a music teacher

and in retail. He is also the worship director at his home church.

During his free time he enjoys playing the guitar, bike riding, go-

ing to the beach, and listening to music. We are so happy to

welcome him into the Grace family and look forward to great

    lessons in Bible class!

    ART NEST CREATIVE FIELD TRIP

    FOR GRADE 5 STUDENTS

    WRITTEN BY: GEORGINA HEALEY

The Grade 5 Class journeyed on a trip to Art Nest on May

4th,2018 where they engaged in an art project based on the sci-

ence unit they were covering at the time o n the Sun, the Moon,

and the Earth. They created a planet project where they took

chalk pastels, using them to create a planet, and were taught how

shade correctly, how to make a drawing look 3D, and how to

draw rings around the planets. All in all, it sounded like a great

experience and they made some beautiful paintings!
