TRANSCRIPT
"Come, you thankful people, come; raise
the song of harvest home. All be safely
gathered in ere the winter storms begin;
God, our maker, doth provide for our
wants to be supplied. Come to God's own
temple, come; raise the song of harvest
home."
Thus begins one of our most beloved
Thanksgiving hymns. We do have much to
give thanks for as individuals, citizens of
this nation, members of our family,
residents of our neighborhoods, and
members of our congregation. I'd like to
use this article to invite you to a special
time of thanksgiving. On Sunday,
November 18, our renovated Education
Wing (old Fellowship Hall!) will be
completed, and we are inviting you
to join the congregation in
giving thanks for the
progress thus far.
The excitement
will get under way
at 4 pm on the afternoon of
the 18th. There will be hors
d'oeuvres in the Narthex as we
gather. Shortly after 4, we will
sing a hymn and join in a prayer
of thanks to our Great God
who continues to bless and
p r o v i d e f o r o u r
congregation. After
that, we will cut the ribbon and begin
tours. There will be a nice, leisurely
hour to explore the first half of our
completed building project, to ask
questions, and just soak in our new
building.
Then at 5, we will proceed into the
sanctuary for a meeting to discuss
and vote on the 2013 budget. The
Church Council has been working hard
to present a solid budget proposal
which balances our desire to grow and
reach new people with our recognition
of the resources which God is giving to
us. Above all, we continue to trust
that the Good Shepherd will continue
to provide for His flock and send His
Holy Spirit to lead and guide us in our
decision-making. We should be able
to conclude around
6 pm so that you can
be home for dinner and
the evening
football games!
I'm thankful for the
wonderful progress we
have made together on
this building project and
look forward to joining with
you in thanks on the 18th.
Serving Him,
Pastor Ben

It has been said many times that the best
plans are often sidetracked by unforeseen
conditions. We had fully expected that we
would be able to move into the refurbished
Education/Administration area of GSLC by
the end of October, however a few delays
have postponed that plan and we now are
on plan B, which moves us in by mid-
November.
Painting is complete, floor coverings are in
place, bathrooms are tiled and ready for use,
administration area is relocated and
functioning, all classrooms have doors in
place, the Shepherd’s Shed will be gone and
hopefully so will the blue rest rooms. The
HVAC system is up and running, lighting is
100%. We will be ready for the November
“open house”.
One sticky point yet is that our total parking
area will not be complete when we make
use of our temporary Certificate of
Occupancy and move in. The addition of the
new fellowship area has taken away several
spaces that were close to the Church
entrance. These spaces will never return and
we are asking you to consider other places
to park. The drive beside the Church (parallel
to Takeda) is now a ‘One Way’ entrance and
is access to the front of the Church parking.
We encourage you to use either the
neighboring dentist’s lot or across Enota in
the shopping center. Please do not drive into
the front of the Church parking spaces from
the dentist’s parking lot, limited viewing
makes entry unsafe. Our parking lot, when
finished, will accommodate more cars than
before we remodeled, so your patience
please. We hope to be complete by March 1,
2013.

We are excited to move to our new
offices and classrooms sometime in
November. We will need a lot of
help moving boxes and furniture as
well as unpacking those boxes and
setting up the rooms.
Watch the Sunday bulletin
announcements for the exact
dates of the move.
And practice your “happy dance”
because the porta-potties will be
gone!!

CALLING ALL FACEBOOK FRIENDS!
Good Shepherd has a
Facebook page. We post
upcoming events and keep
people current with what’s
happening at Good Shepherd.
Different studies indicate that social media
(Facebook being the most popular) is an
important tool in “word of mouth”
advertising.
“Word of Mouth” or referrals are the best
way to get someone to do something.
Here’s where Good Shepherd comes in –
we need your participation. If you would
“Like” the Good Shepherd FB page, and
then “Share” upcoming events, you’ve
Page 3 NOVEMBER 2012
spread the word for us to your other
Friends – and their Friends. Please don’t
discount the importance of this one small
thing you can do for the work that Jesus
called us to do in the great commission!
Wait a minute – you mean if I “Like” and
“Share”, I’m evangelizing? ABSOLUTELY -
and in a POWERFUL way.
We are setting a goal of having 10,000
“Likes” by the end of the year – and
25,000 by the time we start our third
service in March. YOU will be a BIG part of
this effort. Those of you with kids on
Facebook – they will play a crucial role in
this effort by sharing with their Facebook
friends.
Sunday, Nov 4 will be voting day for
Thrivent members! You will select the
chapter board for 2013. Ballots for
members will be available after both
services. Pick up your ballot and vote as
you enjoy refreshments provided by
Thrivent.
A reminder to Thrivent members:
Thrivent’s Choice Dollars program is
continuing, but with two important
changes: (1) As of January 1, 2013, the
recurring direction option will be
Kathy
discontinued, and (2) Thrivent members
must direct their choice Dollars for 2013
by March 31, 2013 or they will be unable
to do so for the remainder of the year. It’s
important to meet that March deadline so
that GSLC can continue to depend on this
source of support. If you want to see
whether you qualify for Choice Dollars or
to direct your amounts to GSLC, call
Thrivent at 800-847-4836. When the
automated system answers, say the
words, “Choice Dollars.”
It’s easy to list the blessings in life: good health, family, a satisfying career, a comfortable home. We might even be thankful for things others take for granted such as freedom and clean drinking water, reliable transportation and food enough to eat. Then there are the little things, such as gardens, sunrises, pets and coffee. But what about life’s storms or unanswered prayers? Should we be thankful for these? Loss and hardship remind us of our dependence on God. He uses trials to draw us closer to him, to show us that he is our rock and refuge. In misfortune and grief, we discover God’s comfort and strength. Should we not, then, be thankful for the storms, too?
On Veterans Day we honor men and women who have
served and sacrificed in one of America’s armed
services. As we remember America's veterans on
November 11, we would do well to read again the third stanza of Katherine Lee Bates' America the
Beautiful:
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife, Who more than self Their country loved,
And mercy more than life! America! America!
May God thy gold refine, Till all success be
nobleness, And every gain divine!

Lutheran Women in
Mission!
At last month’s
zone rally in
A t h e n s , w e
studied Women
of the Old
Testament, and
discovered that they are “Women
Like Us,” our theme for the day. The
rally included a fashion show of
aprons depicting women of the Old
Testament (the same one we used
at the Sisters in Christ Tea last
January), and we made more
“plarn” (plastic yarn) to be made
into mats for the homeless (shown
in photo), as well as tying quilts
for Lutheran World Relief.
Also last month, at the district
convention, new district officers were
elected and new
mission grants
for the 2012-
2014 biennium
were selected.
A list of those grants
was distributed on LWML Sunday.
Watch for more information and lots of
photos from the convention in the
district LWML newsletter, the Evangel,
coming out around
November 20.
This month, several
women from our
congregation will
travel to Gatlinburg,
TN for a weekend
retreat. The facilities
and location are
beautiful, as you can
see in these photos.
There is still room for
a few more women -
see Celina Haupt if you are interested.
On November 17 we will meet for our
annual planning session, when we make
plans for the events/activities for the
coming year, and also to determine the
disbursement of the funds collected at our
yard sale.
Due to construction, we are unable to have

Several members of our

We also met and discussed
the national youth gathering
that is coming up in July. We
are also adding a mission

to spend time in Texas doing
service. I am super pumped
about this!!! May God bless
you and please pray for our

Another acolyte
training session is
planned for Sunday,
November 4 during
the Sunday school
hour. This is for
youth who are in 5th
grade or above.
The youth are planning to have an Angel Tree again this year, even with the challenge of “where to put it?” They are a creative group, so look for something different! The Senior youth and 8th graders will set up the tree and decorate it on
November 4 during the Sunday school hour. Gifts and monetary donations can be brought in through December 2. The youth will shop for gifts on December 9 after second service. This year they will go through a local group (like DFACs, but this is not determined yet). They hope to help at least 2 - 4 families at Christmas time.

Guatemala Mission Trip Pam Jovaag

Hola! Escribo desde la clinica de la Santa Cruz en
Amatitlan, Guatemala.
Our team arrived safely on Friday, October 19. Janet,
Betty, Chris and I were soon on our way to our mission
field destination of Amatitlan. The afternoon and
evening were filled with forty-plus children ranging in
age from infant to sixteen. These children arrived full of
energy and anticipation. The children sang from their
hearts as Pator Abdiel played the keyboard and Brenda
led the singing with motions. You could feel God’s
presence as the budding faith of these children was
shown through their contagious smiles,
energetic song motions and enthusiastic
outpouring of the words. This truly was a
sight to behold to see the conviction of
these children’s faith.
This gathering is a weekly event sponsored
by Castillo Fuerte Lutheran Church
in Guatemala City and hosted at the Santa
Cruz Medical Clinic in Amatitlan. This
mission of medicine and children’s ministry
began in 2008 as an outreach ministry of
Castillo Fuerte Lutheran Church. Two
brothers and their wives have made this mission
outreach their priority. Pastor Abdiel Orozco and
his wife, Brenda, run the children’s ministry and
Dr. Elry Orozco and his wife, Liz, operate the
medical clinic and host the visiting mission
teams.
Sunday we traveled back to Guatemala City to
worship at Castillo Fuerte. All in all, we
understood most of what was
being spoken and sung since it is
s im i l a r to our o rd e r o f
service. Everyone is so gracious, and communing with our brothers and
sisters in Christ was very spiritual and uplifting. We were able to
experience “one body, many parts” in person as First Corinthians, verse
13 states, “For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body, whether
Jews or Greeks, slave or free, and we were all given the one Spirit to
drink.”
Today, Monday, we begin assisting Dr. Elry in the medical clinic and
organizing the small pharmacy, discarding outdated medicines and
updating the inventory. The medical clinic will be open each day this
week while we are here to assist. The afternoons will be spent working
with the children that participate in the children’s ministry. Brenda and two
teenagers from the Castillo Fuerte youth group will come each day to assist us.
This is where we will introduce the puppets, scripts, crafts and outdoor activities.
We praise and thank God each day for giving us this incredible opportunity to
share our faith with the beautiful people here in Amatitlan. The ministry vision of
this clinic and children’s ministry is “Nuevo Vida,” New Life. Together with our
help, the Orozco brothers, their families and church, want to give the hurting and
impoverished mothers and children in Amatitlan hope for eternal life through
Jesus Christ and hope for a better future here by educating the families in
Scripture, nutrition, health and vocations.

JOSE AND CESAR GUTIERREZ
Jose Gutierrez, age 16, and his brother
Cesar, age 15, were left orphaned when their father died in December
of 2011 after a lengthy illness. Their mother died in 2007 of liver
failure. The boys have extended family that live across the street to
help watch over them. Cesar finished the 5th grade but did not want
to go to high school but would prefer to go to mechanical school. A
sponsor has come forth to pay for this, and we will be enrolling him in
mechanical school
while we are there.
Jose has never
gone to school and
does not know how
to read or write. He
learned from a very
early age due to his father’s illness
how to help his dad with the horse
and cart business. He wants to
continue in his father’s footsteps.
Of the existing houses that we
evaluated on our last trip, theirs was
the worst of any we saw. There is
barely anything holding it together.
A small wind would knock it down. There is only one bed for both boys to share. The
caning is broken so they lay cardboard over the
bed to cover the hole. There is nothing else in
the house besides what you see here.
On November 2, 2012, Suzy Eberle will be traveling with BASIC Nicaragua to Chinandega,
Nicaragua once again to help the people there. They will be building 5 houses, sponsoring 84
children with school scholarships for the 2013 school year, and seeing approximately 1,200
patients in the vision clinic, supplying them with eyeglasses and medicines. Below are the
profiles of two families who will be receiving new houses on this trip.
CLARA AND SERGIO MENDOSA-PALMA
Clara Mendosa-Palma lives with just her son, Sergio. He works
in the sugar cane fields part-time during the season (November-
February). She washes clothes and irons part-time but both
incomes together are still not enough. Sergio studied a long
time ago but hasn't been in school for years. Clara has
something wrong with her right eye and is supposed to have eye
surgery but is
scared. She takes
drops instead of
having the surgery.
They often go
without meals
because there
just isn’t
enough money
to buy even
beans.

This is Clara’s kitchen. The cement
blocks on top of the wooden platform
is where she sets her pot to cook. The
fire is built in-between the blocks.
Notice the black plastic roof falling
down and the light coming in through
the hole in the roof.
This is an inside view of Clara and
Sergio’s house. Notice the gaping
holes in the walls and ceilings.
Clara is a very religious woman.

LCEF (Lutheran Church Extension Fund) Doug Fuge
In November, many churches conduct stewardship
campaigns. Sadly, many church members associate the
word stewardship only with pledge cards, budget
discussions and a challenge to give more generously.
Actually, stewardship deals with managing everything
God has given to us — our brain, body, talent, time and
spiritual life. It’s our total response to God’s gifts.
Stewardship campaigns give us an opportunity to re-
appraise our lives as a whole. Are we glorifying God with
our minds, bodies, talents, property, financial resources,
etc? Are we using our gifts to spread Christ’s gospel? How
are we showing our love to God and the church?
Taking inventory of our stewardship is a meaningful experience. Consider God’s
indescribable goodness toward you, as well as your response to his showers of blessing.
That will reveal the quality of your stewardship.

Burned your turkey to a crisp?
Don’t despair!
Craig Boldman and Pete Matthews,
authors of Every Excuse in the Book
(Mjf Books), offer reasons to be
thankful for a blackened bird:
• You’ll get a good upper-body
workout from carving the bird.
• No one will get food poisoning
from undercooked poultry.
• You can move straight to dessert.
• You won’t have to deal with
weeks of leftovers.
• Pets won’t pester you for scraps.
• It was time to test your smoke
alarm anyway.

When Paul wrote to the
church in Rome, he
addressed his letter “To
all God’s beloved … who
are called to be
saints” (Romans 1:7,
NRSV). Paul regarded his
fellow believers in Christ
who lived in Rome as
saints, that is, people
who are holy. Why could
he say this? Because Christ had given them His
holiness in a divine exchange on the cross. Therefore
all believers in Christ can be referred to as saints.
About 700 years after the church began, leaders
designated November 1 as All Saints’ Day to honor
people whose lives reflect Christ dwelling within them.
Because of what God has done for us in Christ, all
Christians can wear the label of saint.
