COLLECTION TODAY is for the Catholic Education Service

Education Sunday is a day of celebration for all those involved in education. The Catholic Education Service’s theme for Education Sunday 2017 is 'gathered in my name'. Education Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate and give thanks for all the students, staff and parents who work so hard in and for Catholic schools. visit www.catholiceducation.org.uk/images/Christ_at_the_Centre_1.pdf

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY CHURCH - next Tuesday lunchtime As we are attempting to become a dementia friendly church the following meeting may be of interest. Several people have already expressed an interest in this area. Gaynor

Hammond, the minister at Hope Baptist Church, is coming to talk with those interested on Tuesday Sept 12th at 12.30pm in the lounge. This will last about an hour. Please let Kay know if you are interested. Apologies for the time of the meeting but it was the only available slot for the speaker. Further meetings will be at a later time if that is felt appropriate. Kay Pierce

FUNERAL OF CARDINAL CORMAC MURPHY-O’CONNOR

This will take place on Wednesday 13 September at Westminster Cathedral. His body will be received into the cathedral on Tuesday morning, before lying in state throughout the day. Cardinal Vincent Nichols will celebrate Solemn Vespers at 5pm that evening and Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham will preach. The Requiem Mass, which will be a ticket-only event, will take place at noon the following day, celebrated by Cardinal Nichols. Archbishop George Stack of Cardiff, who served as an auxiliary bishop for over ten years under Cardinal Murphy O’Connor, will preach. Paying tribute to the cardinal after news of his death was announced on Friday, Archbishop Stack said he was “a man of deep faith, great humility and extraordinary insight.” Cardinal Cormac was “always full of compassion, seeking to find what was good in each person. His gentle humour put everyone at their ease in his company.” The parish church of Our Lady of Grace in Chiswick, West London, where the cardinal spent much of his retirement, has also announced that it will receive the cardinal’s body at 8pm next Sunday September 10 for parishioners and visitors to pay their respects. The church will remain open late and there will be a rosary followed by Compline. At noon the following day, Monday 11 September, Bishop Mark O’Toole of Plymouth will celebrate Mass at the church, before the cardinal’s body is removed to Westminster Cathedral. There will be a further opportunity for people to attend a memorial Mass for Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor three weeks later, on Wednesday 4 October, at Westminster Cathedral. May he rest in peace.

BEREAVEMENT TRAINING DAY

Over the last few months we have held a Mass in St Mary's on the First Saturday of each month followed by refreshments in the Hall. So far this has been well received, so thank you to all who attended and also to all those who have helped prepare for each event - especially for the wonderful cakes that have been baked. In the Archdiocese of Liverpool, Maureen Knight coordinates bereavement activities across all the Parishes. Maureen has kindly offered to come to the Halifax Deanery to provide a Bereavement Training Day for those interested in how friendly support is offered. This will take place on Tuesday 26th September in St Alban's Church Hall (St Alban's Croft, Off Huddersfield Road, HX3 0AZ). The day begins with coffee at 10.30 (a light lunch will also be provided) and finish at 16.00. There is no charge for this event. If you wish to attend please contact Caroline Walsh by Friday 15th September (i.e. this Friday) on 07826818872.

CARITAS LEEDS LAUNCH CARITAS LEEDS will be formally launched by Bishop Marcus on Saturday 23rd September at Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College in Leeds between 1:00pm-5:00 pm. It will consist of addresses by Bishop Marcus, Dr Philip McCarthy, Chief Executive of Catholic Social Action Network (CSAN) and the coordinator of Caritas Leeds. Participants will have the opportunity to attend a number of short but engaging workshops and networking.

THE SEASON OF CREATION The Season of Creation runs from 1st September through to 4th October (the feast of St Francis of Assisi). It is when Pope Francis and Christians around the globe will pray for the care of creation. Last year over 300 Season of Creation events were held around the globe, many of them ecumenical, in a beautiful display of Christians coming together in prayer for creation. There is a global online prayer service which you can join on 19th September. – see the website details below to find out how to join this. But, What could you do in your parish to celebrate this season? If you are not sure then there is plenty of help at hand. A website has been specifically set up to help liturgy groups with lots of ideas that can be adapted to particular church community circumstances. There are ideas for ecumenical services, as well as ideas specifically for Catholic situations. Go to: http://seasonofcreation.org/ This is a global initiative that is part of the Global Catholic Climate Movement and which is fully supported by CAFOD in the UK (Dan Hale, Head of Campaigns at CAFOD is a member of the GCCM Steering Committee). When you go to their website one of the first things that hits you is a map showing where in the world events have already been planned. There are a lot – but not so many in the UK. If a special event is too much effort then think about Sunday liturgies and how some of the ideas can be incorporated into these. We can all do something.
