What is the Golgi Apparatus?

• An organelle located within the cell• Acts as a “warehouse” for receiving , sorting,

shipping and some manufacturing products• Products are modified and stored and then

sent to other destinations

Anatomy of the Golgi• Cisternae- flattened membranous sacs• Cisternae separate internal space from

cytosol• Cis Face- receiving side of the golgi (located

near the endoplasmic reticulum (ER))• Trans Face- shipping side of the golgi

What does it look like?

Functions of the Golgi

• Helps modify carbohydrates by removing certain sugar monomers

• Manufactures some macromolecules (like pectins in plant golgi’s)

What allows it to function?

• Cisternae contains unique groups of enzymes

• Enzymes allow the golgi to manufacture and refine product

The Golgi Model Today• Was considered to be static• New evidence gives rise to the Cisternal

Maturation Model of the golgi• Targets products by adding “identification tags”

such as phosphate groups to products• Transported products may have external

molecules that help with determining destinations
