Philanthropy Update 2012

By Michelle Burdette As you know, the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation helps Alpha Gams achieve their goals by awarding scholarships and grants and also supports the Fraternity's philanthropic efforts by awarding grants to diabetes organizations. This year, the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation turns 50! In honor of their 50th anniversary, they are asking for our help by considering making a donation to the Foundation. The details of the challenge can be found on the Foundation's website at http://alphagammadelta.org/agdfoundation/50thanniversary You can also get involved from a philanthropic perspective on a local level! The Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter continues to place a huge emphasis on philanthropy, and we several events planned this year that support our philanthropy as well as local initiatives. - The JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes will be held on Sunday, September 23rd. The Alpha Iota Chapter will be voluteering at the walk and welcome any alumnae that may be interested in voluteering with them. Last year we had a great time greeting the walkers, assisting with scavenger hunt and passing out refreshments. Anyone interested in voluteering should contact Michelle Burdette at [email protected]. - December 4th we will continue our long standing tradition of holding our annual Shoebox Ministry at Nina Williams' house. We will put together shoeboxes with personal/necessity items for the Cleveland area shoebox ministry. This is a great event to spend time with your sisters and give back to the community before the holidays. Further details on these events as well as other events that come up throughout the year will be included in future emails and on our Facebook page. We hope to see you at one of these events!

In addition to the calendar events on page 1, the GCAC Jr. Circle has a few special events planned just for themselves. Expect a great night on the town ladies!

Greetings from the Alumnae President

I hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer and finding plenty of time to spend with family and friends. 2012 is moving at a break-neck speed--Christmas will be here before we know it! The past year has been a great one for our Alumnae Chapter and we have some great events on the calendar for the rest of 2012 and 2013. We hope you will be able to join us for a few evenings! I also want to take a moment to thank our Alumnae Chapter officers--they volunteer their time and efforts month after month and their dedication is inspiring. I hope you enjoy this edition of the Gold Dust and we hope to see you soon! Loyally, Kerry Jackson-Woloszynek AI '02

Down the Road at IHQK

By Kina Kerst Alpha Gamma Delta has a new home! International Headquarters and The Foundation staff are now located at 8710 N Meridian Street in Indianapolis. At over 18,000 square feet, the new IHQ is more than double the size of our previous home.

In 2011, Alpha Gamma Delta unveiled a new logo and embarked on a branding campaign, encouraging members to “Live with Purpose,” inspired by the Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose. The point of the Purpose and the tagline Live with Purpose is to determine your own path to achieve these ideals. And the ideals themselves are simple. Be there for your sisters. Take care of yourself and those around you. Be the best you can be. Know that what you matters and you can make an impact in the smallest of ways. That's living with Purpose. We are growing! In December, Theta Psi was installed at Austin Peay in Tennessee, while on May 9, two chapters were installed at St. Joseph’s College in New York: the Brooklyn campus (Lambda Beta) and Long Island chapter (Lambda Alpha) welcomed 60 new initiates. This fall, Alpha Gamma Delta is colonizing at the University of South Carolina, Villanova Spring 2013 and Appalachian State in 2014. We will recolonize at UCLA (Delta Epsilon) and University of Southern California (Delta Alpha) Fall 2013. How can you help with the upcoming colony? Be a Pearl Sister! Once our colonization recruitment events are held at University of South Carolina, IHQ will match each new member up with an alumna volunteer who will encourage her throughout her new member period. Pearl Sisters do not need to live close to the colony in order to participate. Communication can be anything from chatting on Facebook or Twitter to sending her cards, emails or phone calls. This is a great opportunity to convey that an Alpha Gam sister is always close! Apply to be a Pearl Sister http://fs3.formsite.com/alphagammadelta/form16/index.html

My Life as a Leadership Consultant

By Maria Carbenia Over the past year I have had the opportunity to serve in one of the most rewarding roles our Fraternity has to offer. As a Leadership Consultant, I have had the privilege to travel across the country visiting our collegiate chapters, each visit offering a unique chance to be inspiring but also to be inspired. The Leadership Consultant position is focused on two areas: people and purpose. We strive to enhance the member experience and to further the ideals of our organization. Throughout the year I made forty-two visits to chapters everywhere from Texas to Massachusetts. I also had the opportunity to work on extension and colonization for two of the Fraternity’s newest chapters: Lambda Alpha Chapter- St. Joseph’s College, Long Island and Lambda Beta Chapter- St. Joseph’s College, Brooklyn. I came off of a year on the road with thousands of frequent flyer miles and a whole new outlook on the power of the sorority experience. If we are living with purpose then we will without a doubt impact the world and each other. As I prepare to embark upon my second year on the road, I am looking forward to continue building new relationships with our members across North America while continuing my personal and professional growth.

Pictured at left is Leadership Consultant, Maria Carbenia, with fellow Leadership Consultants at an event during colonization at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.

Alum Chums For those of you who want to become involved with the Alpha Iota collegiates on a more personal level, being an “alum chum” is for you! By being an alum chum you show the collegiates that AGD is a lifelong commitment, not just a hobby during their 4 years of college. You can mentor our current collegiates showing them how Alpha Gamma Delta can help them achieve their full potential. New alum chums are needed for the upcoming recruits of 2012-2013 school year. Anyone who is interested should contact Linda Rist Ochs at [email protected] or (440) 353-3481

By Kina Kerst Alpha Gamma Delta’s 47th Convention was held in St. Louis, MO from July 18-21, 2012. Alpha Iota Chapter was represented by Chapter Advisor, Michelle Rafal Burdette, Chapter President Anissa Miranda, VP Recruitment Sarah Thaxton, and Leadership Consultant, Maria Carbenia. The Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter representation included Kina Kerst, VP of the Alumnae Chapter and Province 23 Director; and Sheri Kellner, Area G Coordinator. After arriving in St. Louis, Greater Cleveland Alpha Gams didn’t know which way to run first. We shopped for new Alpha Gam merchandise, found our way to the Gateway Arch, posed for crazy Foundation pictures, and negotiated a limo ride with an unsuspecting chauffeur. As we were introduced to many new sisters from around North America, we met up with AI Leadership Consultant, Maria Carbenia, to catch up on her journeys from the prior year. Wednesday evening, International President, Jackie Brannon Stutts, called the Convention to order and delegates of new Alpha Gam chapters entered with their respective flags. A crowd erupted with cheers and tears upon the arrival of the Alpha flag, followed by Delta Upsilon, Theta Psi, Lambda Alpha and Lambda Beta. We also received updates on upcoming colonizations at University of South Carolina, Villanova, San Diego State University, University of Southern California, UCLA, and Appalachian State, and the anticipation of initiating 1000 new charter members. Have you ever wanted to attend a birthday party with nearly 700 sisters? We celebrated the 50

th Birthday of

the Alpha Gamma Foundation at a Birthday Luncheon, complete with cupcakes and noisemakers. Benita Wilson Dick, Foundation President, announced a donation of $100,000 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation during the last biennium and the awarding of over $10,000,000 (yes, million) in scholarships since the Foundation’s inception! The most emotional time of convention was the Ritual Services and the Honors of Epsilon Pi Service. Following our Epsilon Pi dinner, two Alpha Iota’s received Epsilon Pi honors: Michelle Rafal Burdette – Arc of Epsilon Pi, and Sheri Kellner – Arc of Epsilon Pi with Diamonds. The evening ended with not one, but two sisters being awarded the Circle of Epsilon Pi, the highest award given by the Fraternity to an alumna member who has given faithful, distinctive, creative and continued service to the Fraternity.

Alpha Gamma Delta Convention 2012 Recap “Live With Purpose”

Friday morning started with more awards. Alpha Iota collegiate chapter was recognized as a Jewel Chapter for raising over $2000 for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. On Saturday morning, 300 Alpha Gams met for the Defeat Diabetes One Step at a Time one-mile walk. Afterwards, the Awards Luncheon was a special event for Alpha Iota. The ladies came home with the Most Improved Scholarship award for chapters with 51-99 members, and received Honor Roll for Chapter Efficiency and The Rose Bowl (scholarship). Additionally, they were recognized for Strive for Pi, Quota and Totals. The Final Business Meeting began with a $5000 Foundation check presented to the JDRF of Greater St. Louis and Southern Illinois, International Council retirements and a closing slide show. And finally what everyone was waiting for was the announcement of the 2014 Convention: Indianapolis, July 9-12, 2014. Live with Purpose. One of the most memorable times of the week was the formal Feast of Roses banquet that culminated in the Chapter Roll and over 500 candles illluminating the room. As the evening ended, it was touching to hear everyone’s unique experiences of how Alpha Gamma Delta has impacted their lives and shaped them into the women they became. I am so happy to be part of this exceptional experience. Live with Purpose.
