Steve ThomasOxfordshire Community Churches

It is a privilege to recognise, honour and appreciate the faithful years of service of Geoff and Mary Norridge. Since the late seventies they have served pastorally within Oxfordshire Community Churches, first as elders within the church in Merryfield House, Witney, then as leader of Kidlington Covenant Community (both of these churches were forerunners of OCC itself ), then as one of the full-time ministries of Oxford Community Church. In the mid-nineties they moved back to Witney to lead Witney Community Church, and were instrumental in the planting of separate congregations in West Witney and North Witney. In the early 2000’s, they were released to a translocal pastoral ministry, developing the Marriage Course, Celebrate Recovery, and Parenting courses with OCC, and the Pastoral Training Course for the Salt & Light family of churches.

We love Geoff and Mary, and recognise their love for God’s people over the years. For me, they have been loyal friends and fellow-labourers, and I personally esteem them very highly. We value them so highly, that they will continue to work for us within 20% of their time, which obviously still gives them a larger chunk of their life to be loving grandparents, to perhaps live at a slightly gentler pace, to travel somewhat in ministry, to continue to lead the Pastoral Training Course for Salt & Light, but probably not to retire! Is there retirement in the Kingdom of God? Most of us doubt it!

We also want to mention that Bryn and Dorothy Franklin, who have had several different periods of working with OCC, are now no longer formally part of our OCC staff, but will continue to be associated with us, and see OCC, and particularly the apostolic ministries team of OCC, as their pastoral base. They will continue to travel widely in ministry, and we look forward to seeing them from time to time. We also love and honour them, and are grateful for our many years of fellow-labouring together in the work of God’s kingdom. May their prophetic gifts continue to be used by God in many different places!

The e-mail read, “We would like an article of 400 words about your history with OCC and what the next season holds for you both.” Mmmm! Almost 40 years in 400 words. Now, that would be a miracle, especially when those years have been full of adventure, challenges, faithful friends and blessings.

The story really began in January 1972. We had been Christians for about 6 years, but were spiritually dry, as were our friends, Dave & Chris Richards. Spiritual thirst led us into the baptism in the Holy Spirit and life has never been the same since. Our eyes were gradually opened to a host of new understandings and revelations: the Kingdom, church as people, every member ministry, gifts of the Spirit, healings and (in due course) Christian education and so on.

We moved into community in Merryfield House, Witney in 1974: two couples, two children (ours), two single young ladies and a dog. It had shades of Acts 2 (except the dog) as we lived ‘all things in common’ and saw God provide in miraculous ways.

Very quickly, our weekly charismatic ‘all comers’ meeting developed into a house church (Witney CC) and by the end of 1976 both Dave and I were in full-time pastoral ministry.

We became friends with a Baptist pastor, Steve Thomas and his pastoral assistant, David Freeman. Roger Cole turned up with his flute. Many joined the church, including: a Methodist local preacher, Bryn Franklin, John Ellwood (now The King’s School principal) and his future wife, Celia, teenagers like Mark Mumford (now leader of S&L’s UK team). (Mark’s future wife, Nesta lived with us for some time.)

In 1980 (and now with 5 sons), we felt the Lord say it was time to move out of community and re-plant a languishing church in Kidlington. Our leadership team there included

Barrie & Mary Wood, Cedric & Audrey Hobbs and Kieran & Gwen Murphy. The fellowships in Kidlington, Witney, Cote, Chippy and Wantage became Oxfordshire Community Churches under Steve’s leadership as we realised that we were “stronger together”.

When I was prayed in as pastor of Kidlington, there were many significant prophetic words including God’s intention that “out of a village (Kidlington) would come a city (Oxford CC)”. In due time, Steve moved to Oxford and we worked together establishing the new church with its student work.

For years, we’ve carried a concern for godly family life. We’ve written and run marriage preparation and parenting courses and residential weekends. Subsequently, invitations came for us to minister around the UK and in other countries. That was and is a tremendous privilege and very humbling (we know where we’ve come from!).

After a couple of years pastoring Wantage, in 1995 we went back to Witney to take on the lead from Roger Cole, and soon one became two as West Witney was planted. In 2002, Gary & Jackie Pizzey took the lead of North Witney, releasing us to serve more widely, including pastoring several OCC pastors and developing the family life work, S&L Pastoral Training Course, Celebrate Recovery, etc.

So what now? We don’t see ourselves as ‘retired’, but we have laid down some things in faith that others will pick them up. Last year, Geoff felt he should refit his study as a prophetic declaration that there was more to do. That was confirmed by a number of prophetic words about further fruitfulness (including seeking God for a 10-year plan!). So we’re going to find space to seek the Lord for the next phase of service.

One thing is clear: Having begun in the Spirit… there is no other way to live.

Mike Beaumont writes about Bryn and Dorothy Franklin:“Bryn and Dorothy are the very best of Oxfordshire! Bryn grew up in Stonesfield and Dorothy in Long Hanborough, where they met at the Methodist Fellowship Club. Two years later, in 1965, they married and settled down to life in the county, Bryn working at British Leyland and then at Crawford Colletts. It was another 10 years before they became involved with the charismatic group at Merryfield House in Witney (down the road from The King’s School), having been invited to leave their Methodist Church when they were baptized in the Spirit and started praying for other young people to receive this experience too. And so began a 35-year involvement with what would become known as Oxfordshire Community Churches.

“Bryn and Dorothy threw themselves into life at Merryfield, soon becoming one of the pastors (part-time in 1979 and full-time in 1980). In 1981 they helped plant the church at Carterton (it would later die, but it’s back again!) before returning to Witney to release Steve Thomas to church-plant in Oxford 1985. In 1990 they joined Steve there, where they worked hard among both town and gown.

“In 1995 they were seconded to Basingstoke for a year, returned for a year, then went back to Basingstoke again before joining Barney Coombs in Vancouver in 2002. In 2006 they rejoined us in Oxfordshire once again. 2010 saw them retire from OCC’s paid employment - though one doubts very much whether they will actually retire from God’s work! In fact, as you read this they will be serving God for 7 weeks in Uganda!

“So, what can we say about Bryn and Dorothy? Here’s some personal reflections:

“First, they really work as a couple. While it’s often Bryn that we see ‘up front’, he would be the first to say he couldn’t do it without Dorothy’s unfailing support and prayer. Indeed Dorothy is as bold and fearless as Bryn is when it comes to praying for healing, deliverance, or receiving the Holy Spirit!

“Second, they are immensely caring. Many of us have experienced their love and big-hearted friendship, expressed in a kind word, phone call, visit, or a prayer and word from God. Bryn might get your name wrong – but you will always feel loved!

“Third, they are great examples of how to pray, sticking faithfully at it, often for people and things that many of us forget.

“Fourth, where would we have been without Bryn’s incredible prophetic gifting among us, a gifting we have seen grow in depth and accuracy over the years. There have been key words to us as a group of churches – like how God wanted to ‘dollop us out like rice pudding across the county’ that spurred us on to church-planting. There have been countless words to individuals – countless youngsters in The King’s School, for example, have been inspired with accurate words to encourage them in their experience of God’s intimate knowledge of them and to spur them on for the future. I myself have received words at key times in my life and ministry when God has re-directed or encouraged me – and I know I’m not alone!

“For all of this, we honour them today! And our prayer is that ‘retirement’ proves to be enjoyable – but anything but retirement!”

COMES FROMWhere does Christ’s glory come from? It comes from ten thousand places: galaxies, glow-in-the-dark fish, healings, people getting changed by the gospel—the list is long. But one place may be a surprise: Christ’s glory comes from the boasting of God...

Think on these words from John’s gospel: “When [Judas Iscariot] had gone out, Jesus said, ‘Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once” (John 13:31). Difficult, densely packed words. And strange words—especially when we realize Jesus is speaking of his suffering and death. (Glorified? By dying?) But they are true words: words to rattle our cage, and blow up the world.

My own words here risk the sin of over-heated prose. In this case it’s worth the risk. Jesus in John connects his glory to his suffering. He says, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified…[Unless] a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (12:23-24). Notice the link here between Christ’s death and his glory. And recall the words we quoted above—spoken when Judas heads off to betray Jesus: “Now is the Son of Man glorified…God will also glorify him…at once” (13:31-32). Jesus’ focus here is not his enthronement in heaven or his return on the clouds, but something nearer at hand: his death.

God glorifies his Son by sending him to the cross? Really?

Yes, really. And here is why: God glorifies Jesus in his death by testifying to the turning-point power of that death. When I was a boy my grandfather had a four-wheel drive Jeep. When set in its lowest gear range and with the 4-wheel drive engaged, it could go nearly anywhere. It could charge through rivers and up steep slopes and over boulders a third its own height. It could haul enormous loads. I was only 12, and not yet a Christian. For me, that Jeep was the closest thing in my world-view to omnipotence. I would brag about it to friends. Trekking through the mountains of New England,

I’d boast: “My grandfather’s Jeep could handle this.” They’d roll their eyes (they’d never seen the Jeep). But I knew!

What was I doing? I was glorifying that Jeep. I was boasting about it.

What does God do when someone comes to him for help or mercy? What does he do when someone wants to be restored but thinks they’re so far gone that it can’t happen?

Here’s what he does: He boasts. He glorifies his Son. He says, “My Son can handle that!” He boasts. Let’s let that sink in. And he boasts about his Son.

The boast of God goes something like this: “My Son’s sacrifice was so full and so final that it doesn’t matter what you’ve done. My Son’s sacrifice was the turning point. It was greater than Israel’s sin and the disciples’ sin and your sin. It was greater than the damage people have done to you, and the damage you have done to people. Of course he called his suffering his glory: it was how he brought down the enemy and released my grace! It showed how great he was. When Jesus died I was in it: he was glorified and I was glorified in him. Your world thinks suffering and glory can’t go side by side. But they can. So if you’re looking at boulders and sin and an uphill slope, remember that the cross showed my Son’s greatness—and mine. When he died, it wasn’t just about suffering. It was about glory. He and I were showing off.”

This is gospel—good news. Fear gets dethroned when we heed the boasting of God. His Son—glorified in dying—can handle our uphill slopes and our downcast hearts and our repair bills and our relational barriers and our muddled minds.

OXFORDCROSSING OVERThe Summer-Autumn transition always brings change; in Oxford church we’ve seen significant events recently in our life together. We started studying Joshua in September, looking at ‘Crossing Over’, and God spoke clearly to us about maturing our relationships with Him and one another, and becoming more closely involved in His plans. At the end of September, Steve Thomas brought a key word that summarised this: crossing over in faith and working to win our territory with God, no longer just sitting back for gracious blessing but actively partnering with Him to see His kingdom come more fully into our lives and localities. We’ve had excited, growing anticipation as we’ve looked for what God is already doing, and have started re-aligning ourselves with Him.

NEW CHURCH MANAGERIn August we thanked Peter Allen for his faithful service as Church Manager for the previous two years, and welcomed Andrew Clark as his successor. Andrew graduated from KBCTC in July along with his wife, Georgina. He feels a newly-awakened passion to see individuals and groups in the church realise their purposes in God, and a conviction that the united church reveals God’s wisdom and will be used powerfully by Him to extend His kingdom.

The last six months have seen lots of changes in the church. We are now in our big new building on Sundays – lots of room for growth and children’s work etc. – We love it! Answers to prayer have also been a bit of a hallmark. People getting healed, people getting jobs and folk getting new homes.

Great also to witness the joy and wonder of folk newly becoming Christians! Lots of change too in some people moving on and out of the neighbourhood but also others moving in, so a mixture of sorrow and joy there.

OXFORDDEAN COURTWe have a cluster that’s driving an exciting project to open a new Community Centre in a dis-used Social Club building in Dean Court. We’re working with other local folk to create a facility that will benefit the whole community, out of which we hope to run our Kids Club, Pensioners’ lunches, dance classes and much, much more!

THE KING’S CENTREWe recently organised a work party to maintain the building and to signify our commitment to seeing this ‘barn for the harvest’ used well. We’re thankful that God has provided this resource for nurturing, training, and sending.

CHRISTMAS CONCERTWe’re delighted to host London Community Gospel Choir (www.lcgc.org.uk) before Christmas, on Tuesday 7th December. This is a top-quality professional choir and will naturally lead into our presentations of the Gospel at Christmas. It’s going to be a great event to invite our non-church friends and colleagues to. We’d also love it if people came from other churches. The event is ticketed, and we want to see the hall filled, so contact us oxford@occ.org.uk or 01865297420 to book your places now!

We are getting towards the end of ‘Mind the Gap’ - a course helping churches put some joined up strategy into out-reach – it’s been good and as a result we have a load of events lined up to get stuck into – great fun!

On the teaching side of things we are in the middle of a mammoth study of Revelation – by popular request! – which is fairly demanding but greatly rewarding for all concerned.

The Leys Youth Programme (LYP) is a charity started in 1999 by members of the Leys Community Church and is still supported by the church. It has grown from small beginnings (2 volunteers, 3 young people and a football attended its first ever session!) to become the largest youth work organisation on the Blackbird Leys and Greater Leys estates. Sadly, these estates remain the most deprived areas in the county – a fact highlighted by the average life expectancy being 10 years less than that of residents of North Oxford.

The overriding aim of LYP is to bring hope for the future to young people, some of whom have given up on expecting anything positive out of life. We achieve this aim by running a number of projects which include 5 weekly football clubs (for boys and girls), 3 weekly dance clubs, a weekly cheer leading club, 2 weekly art

clubs, a gaming club, a board games club, youth clubs, a large number of mentoring groups, special events and one-to-one mentoring and advice. All of our activities are far more than ‘social events’ for the young people, many of whom suffer from educational underachievement and low self-esteem. Through our projects we build constructive relationships with young people and are able to demonstrate that their expectations in life can be far greater than they often believe.

Mentoring provides the means by which educational underachievement, low self-esteem and expectations and relational breakdowns can begin to be countered. Long-term mentoring relationships, which begin before the teenage years, will also reduce the risk of involvement in crime, drug misuse and entering into early motherhood. In 2006 the success of the mentoring provided by the

So, term has started. The children are back at The King’s School and Stepping Stones. The North Witney church have started meeting at New Yatt Road again after an enforced break over the summer. The development is finished!

It has been really exciting to see the building in action in a variety of ways in the last couple months. It was a rush to finish before the start of term, but the builders got there.

THE LEYS

STUDENTSThe end of the summer term is always a sad time for students, as degrees come to an end and old friends head off in search of new adventures with God. But returning to Oxford after the holidays is a bit special, as we start to get excited about who God will send to us next. Last year’s freshers are now taking up their places as this year’s leaders, and every autumn sees a new passion and vision emerging for the year ahead. This September, we started preparing early by heading to Birmingham for a Fusion Student-Work Conference. We listened to some good teaching and received lots of practical ideas and encouragement for seeing students come to know Christ and getting stuck in at a church during their studies. With only 2% of university students currently attending a local church, we’re praying and planning to lead our university friends to Christ on a BIG scale! So this year we’re looking to move on and develop our small groups, each of which has an out-reach focus. We’re hoping that we’ve ironed out any minor teething problems we encountered last year, and we’re eager to see prayers and actions bear fruit. We’ve already started to see some amazing and really faith-building miracles; prayer for a back injury resulted in some Roger Cole-style arm growing and complete release from pain! We’ve also received a lot of prophetic words about anointing, being set free from fear and stepping out in faith. A couple of students attended the course on how to set up and lead a Student Alpha group, which took place at Holy Trinity Brompton. The talks were inspiring, the teaching was practical and helpful, and the people who went were both challenged and motivated to see Student Alpha courses become a functioning part of our small group activities. This term, we’re planning and preparing for the Love Your Uni event on 30th Oct, where we hope to go out onto the streets to encounter God whilst serving and talking to the Oxford students. We’re so excited about building a community of students who are not only walking closely with God, but who are equipped and motivated to take His love out to their friends and the people of Oxford. Leys Youth Programme was recognised with the award of a 5-year Big Lottery Fund grant, one of only 5 such grants awarded nationally. The LYP Futures Project was launched as a result. The project is designed to tackle the key underlying issues faced by girls and young women living on the estates. This project continues to be hugely successful and, as a result of this success, the Horizon Mentoring Project for young men was launched in May 2008 with the backing of BBC Children in Need. We have just started to work in partnership with the Oxford Academy, the local secondary school, to provide mentoring for Y7 and Y8 young people. In all of our work the long-term aim remains the same – to be part of bringing about a brighter future for the young people of the Leys and, as a result of this, a brighter future to the whole of the community.

There have, of course been teething troubles and snagging issues to resolve, but it is already clear that this is a wonderful provision for the school, the church and the community. Thank you Lord!

At the last Celebration in September, we had the fantastic privilege of seeing the end of a major financial faith leap. In 2001 having already raised over £1million pounds, Oxfordshire Community Churches purchased one half of what is now The King’s Centre.

A year later, we purchased the other half and work continued to refurbish it for our use.

Only 8 years later, God has continued to provide and at the end of September 2010, we were able to make the last payment on a mortgage that lasted until 2017!

We asked Steve Jones to give us an update on what the future of The King’s Centre might be now that the loan has been paid off ...

A few years ago, a senior Anglican leader said to us, “I’m responsible for hundreds of Grade 1 and 2 listed buildings, and I’d happily swap quite a few of them for your Kings Centre!”

It’s been 9 years now since Oxfordshire Community Churches bought The King’s Centre to be a hub of spiritual life for many people and many churches, providing a venue for ministry that serves people not only in Oxford but much beyond. This vision is already being fulfilled, but there is much more to come!

Earlier this year, it was agreed to make a few changes that would help us implement our vision for the Centre more effectively. Firstly, a new group of ‘Kings Centre Governors’ was created, who will invest time, energy and ability to support the Centre staff and to explore future possibilities for development. Secondly, these Governors have appointed Stuart Waddington to a newly created part-time position as ‘Centre Director’. Thirdly, we made some changes to our financial systems to make it easier to develop a business plan for the Centre’s future.

So, we are entering a new season of ministry development through the Centre. In the coming months, we will be asking OCC members to contribute to the process of discovering what more God wants to do through this amazing facility.
