Curriculum

An achievement standard is an assertion by someone in authority of what someone (a

teacher or a learner) in an educational context should do or know.

ASN is a data model for these assertions, their source document and the relationships among

assertions and documents.

The problem…• Large repositories of educational

resources are being created • Jurisdictional controls of education include

various forms of mandated curriculum e.g., national curricula (Achievement Standards)

• Metadata mapping educational resources to curriculum supports teaching, learning and accountability

Machine-addressable

form

Semantic-web amenableCurriculum

Repository

ASN Goals…

• Create an international repository of curriculum in machine addressable form that- Are accurate digital representations of curriculum and

their component statements (semantic units);- Are consistent in form; and - Are modeled in RDF and amenable to the - Semantic Web

• Extensible framework to support evolving uses• Open access

Process and result…• Gathered all current and historical

curriculum documents in the United States (In the USA, 761 documents have been

decomposed (atomized) into “statements” derived from document structure and content in excess of 350,000 learning objective statements)

• All documents and statements assigned URI and are dereferencable over the Web

Core Functions SupportCore Functions Support

Terminology

Align means that two or more curriculum statements are similar.

Correlation means that a learning resources is associated (searchable) by a curriculum statement.

Alignment• Direct Mappings–1-to-many

• Inferred (indirect) mappings–Many-to-1• Experimentation in the USA • Automatic machine processing), • defined intermediary statements

(uber /master statements); and • controlled vocabulary

Describe & Relate

• Networked computers and distributed resources need globally unique identifiers (URI) for purposes of establishing unambiguous “identity” (unique local or project identifiers won’t do!)

Given a Web-resolvable URI, an application can retrieve the appropriate text for human consumption.

Satisfying Machine needs…

Global Interoperability

Open source achievement standards data with globally unique, Web-resolvable identifiers (URI) support:– Efficient integration of data from disparate

resource providers–Resource sharing and linking related

ASN TOOLS & SERVICES…ASN TOOLS & SERVICES…

Tools & Services• Batch downloads of curriculum• Mechanism to dereference an ASN

URI • Web Services for interactions with the

repository by metadata generation tools• Searching & browsing interfaces to

the curriculum

An ASN statement is resolvable over the web.

Try IT !!!

Simply paste the unique URI in a browser, and the RDF/XLM will be returned, showing descriptions and relationships.

Future WorkFuture Work

• Statement versioning –Deviation from current document-centric

focus to evolving statements• Vocabulary extensions–Strand map (navigable paths) extensions

& authoring environment• Enhanced array of properties–Continuous discovery of new assertions to

be made

Work in Progress

The Achievement Standards Network is part of the Global Learning Resource Connection;

collaborating to connect the dots between education systems that support teaching and learning.
