The Giver Journal Topics

Do one a week for the next six weeks. Each journal entry will be collected on Friday.

You will keep the returned/graded papers in your reading binder in the novelsection.

1. Short StoryWrite a short story about the future of the world. Your world of the future can begreat or terrible. Your story can be serious, or humorous. Your story needs a title ,characters, a beginning, middle, and end . It should be 200-250 words.

2. Rules Free write on the topic: Rules. Just go ahead and write!However...if you need some help coming up with what to write...here are somequestions you can answer: Do rules make life easier, or harder? What are theimportant rules that affect your life the most? Are rules & laws necessary or unnecessary? Why do we have rules, if it is our human right to be free? Think aboutThe Giver , too. Are their rules good or not ? (100-150 words)

3. Memory Department Story First, imagine there is a Memory Department Store--a place where you can buy (andsell? and trade? and repair?) memories. For your journal, design an advertisement for this memory store. Use a piece of unlined paper. The advertisement should havewords and pictures-you can design this on a computer or you can draw it. I amlooking for creativity and imagination.

4. MemoriesDescribe 4 memories you have. Pick 2 memories you think of as happy , and 2memories you think of as sad. Describe each memory, describe why it is happy orsad , and then try to imagine what your life would be like without that memory . (Thatis a hard thing to do, but try.) The description of each memory should be at least75 words for a total of at least 300 words)

5. SamenessWrite about Sameness as it really does exist in our Junior High. Write about the dressand behaviors of different groups you know of. Think of popular clothing, haircuts,ways of talking, etc. It sometimes seems like people go through ceremonies and haveto get the same styles. Are people afraid to be different? (100-150 words)

6. .New IdeasDescribe something (or things) new you learned or thought about while readingThe Giver or working during this unit. (100-150 words)
