Shelby’s Sassy Six

Hello Sister Clubwomen, Since April, I have become aware of the honor I have to work with an outstanding group of leaders from across the six Georgia districts, who will be known as “Shelby’s Sassy Six”. When asked “What does it mean to be a sassy girl?”, you may think in terms of the negative meaning of being loud or rude, but this does not apply to “Shelby’s Sassy Six”. These “Sassy Six” Leaders are sassy in the positive term through means of being spirited, confident and lively as they lead GFWC Georgia during the next two years. They are doing

an outstanding job in their role as GFWC Georgia District Presidents. I look forward to seeing many of you during August Institute to be held August 17th – 19th at The Classic Cen-ter in Athens, GA. The 2018-2020 Achievement GOAL Sheet will be included in each Club President’s Packet and will be ready for pickup during Institute. This new GOAL Sheet is a two-year form which is an excellent guideline for your club to use as a calendar reminder for events and dates throughout the year. You may also locate this form at

www.gfwcgeorgia.org then look under Club Re-sources/Reporting & Forms. You will note this new sheet includes a few changes but please note the main change for this form is the new date of January 25th for sending in the completed GOAL Sheet to the State Office. Another item of interest you will be hearing more about from your District Presidents is the new “Shelby’s Sassy Six Challenge District Award”, a Leadership Award between the District Presidents for promoting better communications

and increased attendance during Fall and Spring District Meetings to connect Clubs with their Dis-trict Leaders. At the end of June, I returned home after at-tending the 2018 GFWC Annual Convention in St. Louis, with the theme of “It’s Our Time to Con-nect”, having an opportunity to attend sessions and gather information to bring back to Georgia. The GFWC 2018-2020 Officers were installed, with Mary Ellen Brock as GFWC President, who announced her “Seven Grand Initiatives” chal-lenge. Detailed plans for this challenge will be forthcoming as how GFWC Georgia will step up to meet these challenges. Now, my current words of advice to you is to remember: “A sass a day keeps the basics away - so throw sass around like confetti!” Enjoy your-self as you volunteer! We’re here to interrupt your newsletter reading for a special

announcement…..

P A G E 3 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 1

Ladies, you’ve been waiting for it and I am pleased to announce that reporting for this 2018-2020 GFWC Georgia administration we will intro-duce electronic reporting!

Beginning this reporting year you will be able to submit ALL reports by email. Of course, you will still have the option of using the postal service but we are hoping that the majority of our clubs will take advantage of technology and use email. (Just fyi, those Conservation CSP Chairmen will be mighty happy we are saving more trees!)

There are lots of changes to report-ing this year so I encourage you to have at least one representative from your club at Institute. We will have a reporting workshop at 8:00 am Saturday at our opening session. It’s like going to the doctor…it’s always better to have someone hear the news with you so you can be sure to get it right!

Please mark your calendars now to be with us. In the Saturday Market-place, I will be available to answer questions about the new reporting format and assist you one on one with our new procedures.

As if email reporting is not enough, I will also tell you that there are no more grids on the report forms.

Now that I have your interest peaked, mark your calendars to attend Institute and get all the report-ing information firsthand!

Kim, Second Vice President

Saturday, April 28, 2018, we not only Filled the Trolley but helped promote pass-ing of Marsy's Law that will be on the Geor-gia ballot in November. 2018. We handed out flyers, tees and totes and made people aware of what the law is all about. The goal of Marsy’s Law of Georgia is to elevate victims’ rights to a Constitutional level so that victims of violent crimes will be afforded the same Constitutional protection as criminals. Victims of violent crime and their families deserve to have guaranteed Constitutional rights, to be treated with respect and dignity within our system of criminal justice, have their voices heard in key judicial proceed-ings, and their safety considered when setting bail and release conditions.

Central East District - Debby Vanderbunt I started my adventures with the Federation as a charter member of the Covington Junior Woman’s Club in July 1984. (There was an earlier Covington Junior Woman’s Club that had folded), honors include, 10th District Junior Clubwoman of the Year and in 1987, Covington Junior Woman’s Club Family of the Year. Later, I helped form the night time group of the Covington Woman’s Club which formed the Heartland Woman’s Club, honors include clubwoman of the year for our club in 2017. I have held many offices in the district as well as well as state positions. I have been married to my hus-band, Bruce, for almost 51 years. We have two boys, Derek (lost to

cancer at age 39) and Dustin, age 45. I have two grandchil-dren, Evelyn, age 16, who helps me with some of our woman’s club projects and Garret, age 14. My hobbies are gardening, cooking, and playing duplicate bridge in hopes of becoming a Life Master shortly. I lack less than one gold point in achiev-ing this goal. My symbol is the Pineapple with the theme Be a Pineap-ple, Stand Tall, wear a Crown and be sweet on the in-side. Scripture: “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” Romans 12:13. Quote: “There

are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a mira-cle.” Albert Einstein. District Project: “Fill the basket” to help relieve hunger in your community thru Action Minis-tries. I hope our district makes a difference in our counties so that few if any go hungry. She has chosen Domestic Violence Awareness as her District Project with the belief that this remains one of the most significant women’s issue of our time. Patty has confidence that GFWC members can harness their energy to continue to improve and solve this ongoing problem in our society. She looks forward to serving as your new GFWC Georgia NE District President and work-ing with this great group of dedicated women who have stepped up to serve as the new NE District Officers. Congratulations and Thank you Shantelle Grant, Jill Bagley, Dana Skelton-Sanders, Barbara Reynolds, Shug Latimer and Mary Bob Fox! Patty

Patty was born in Germany to a US Army veteran and a German-American mother and feels very fortunate to have lived and travelled all over the world growing up. She has been married to her husband John for 38+ years and has two grown sons - Nick who lives with an Autism Spectrum disorder and Eric who is recently engaged to a lovely young lady from Ringgold and busy working on his PhD in Chemistry. Several years ago, she retired from a career in Strategic Sourcing and began looking for ways to connect and serve her community. She joined the GFWC Lilburn Woman’s Club in early 2009. Patty has selected the Dragonfly and a theme of ‘Transforming our Communities and the World.” Throughout the ages and all around the world the dragonfly has been a symbol used for wisdom and transformation. Other qualities of the dragonfly that she feels corre-late back to GFWC values are longevity, diver-

I am very proud to be serving as the North West District President. I will work diligently to engage all clubs from small to large clubs, from the newest to the oldest clubs and from the big city to the rural clubs to come together to share ideas, recognize accomplishments and to inspire all to become more involved and create a vision of GFWC Georgia beyond the club level all in the spirit of a memora-ble fellowship experience. I chose the hydrangea as my symbol as it is a flower that is deeply symbolic and meaningful. It can express a wide range of feelings from apology to joy while also being graceful and beautiful. The plant comes in a wide range of colors, sizes and versatility. As club-women we express the same charac-teristics. Like a cluster of flower petals

I look forward to hearing the many ideas and projects that are completed over the next two years. In Federation Spirit, Jessica Hall

Back-to-school It is time for back-to-school! Here at the Education CSP we are busy getting ready for Institute which is the GFWC Georgia Federation “back-to-school” time. These are some suggestions: • Provide back-to-school supplies for elementary schools involving the community in a supply

drive. Most schools have lists of required supplies, extra dry erase boards and markers, flash drives, hole punches and small stickers and toys for incentives are welcome.

• Preschools and Head Start programs always need manipulatives such as magnetic letters, counters and sight word games. Have a Back to School Party theme for your August or September meeting to collect these.

• Ask school librarians what they need, especially middle school. • Sponsor a “Cool to be in School” program to honor students with perfect attendance. Hold multiple

ceremonies to keep the idea fresh. • Help a teacher organize their room before students arrive. • Create Just-in-Case Boxes with “emergency teacher supplies” (lip balm, gold stars mints, nail file,

etc.)
