Dear Fellow Alumni: As the largest Georgetown alumni club in the world, the Georgetown Club of Metropolitan Washington, D.C., represents more than 50,000 local alumni with programs and events to develop and strengthen our ties to alma mater. Our core mission is to serve as a bridge between Georgetown and its alumni from all schools and programs to foster a lifelong relationship with the University and fellow alumni. Each fall, the Club provides an annual report to update the alumni community about the Club’s membership, activities, and programming over the past fiscal year. Thanks to the efforts of the Club’s leaders and volunteers, the Club achieved significant milestones this year, as you will see. Some of the highlights include:

• During the 2016-2017 fiscal year, the Club continued to have one of the largest membership rolls among all of Georgetown’s regional clubs;

• The Club planned, promoted, and directed approximately 32 unique Club events between June 30, 2016 and June 30, 2017, along with game watches for many of the Men’s Basketball away games; and

• The Club’s communications and social media platforms have continued to see increased growth, with more alumni engaged and receiving Club-directed messaging about events and programming.

The Club continues to grow and expand as evidenced by the wide array of events and programming we offer. This year, the Club was the winner of two FY 2017 Alumni Club Recognition Awards from the Georgetown University Alumni Association (GUAA). Our Club won the Community Service Program Award for its volunteering efforts at Family Day at the Air & Space Museum in March 2016, as well as the Educational Program of the Year Award for its Spiritual Sunday Spring Lunch Series at Dog Tag Bakery in the Spring of 2016. Last year, the Club was proud to receive the Social Program of the Year Award from the GUAA for the Club’s Dinner with Alumni Program and the Community Service Program Award for its Georgetown Community Cleanup. This followed the Club’s receipt of the GUAA Club of the Year Award in 2014. All of these honors highlight the hard work of our alumni volunteers, both past and present, who have made the Club what it is today. We should all be proud to be home to the flagship club of the GUAA. We want the Club to be an effective part of your lifelong Georgetown connection. We encourage all local alumni to join our ranks. For our members, we offer events, programming, and special opportunities that reflect the University’s extraordinary blend of scholarship, networking, spirituality, service, athletics, and unforgettable social events. Find out how you can get involved today by visiting www.dchoyas.org. We are Georgetown! Hoya Saxa,

Membership During the 2016-2017 fiscal year, the Club continued to have one of the largest membership rolls among all of Georgetown’s regional clubs. Free membership is offered to recent graduates and any currently-enrolled student in a degree-granting program at Georgetown, and the Club was delighted to see so many take advantage of this great opportunity. This engagement with students and recent graduates mirrors the GUAA’s ongoing efforts to bolster alumni-student connections. In addition, once again, the Club also offered free membership to administration, faculty, staff, Jesuits, and parents of current students living within the Club’s geographic limits. While the Club’s overall membership remained static from last fiscal year, this is the expected result from a long-term effort to review membership rolls, issue reminders to alumni with lapsed membership, and remove members who remain intentionally lapsed. Unlike other regional clubs, the Club’s location and proximity to Georgetown means that its membership is large but often changing. The Club’s membership therefore must be carefully managed to accurately reflect student and alumni transitions in and out of the Washington, D.C., area. Moreover, lapsed members tend to be those who were initially offered free membership and therefore their removal has no impact on the Club’s budget. As of June 30, 2017, the Club had 1,938 official members. This represents nearly a 25% increase from the same time last year, partly due to a member-only event that also served as a membership drive for the Club. The Club’s membership remains diverse with 372 members from the Class of 2011 and prior; 969 members from the Classes of 2012– 2016; 41 members from the Class of 2017; 381 members who are current students; 55 family memberships; 20 members who are parents of current students; 97 members from the Georgetown faculty and staff; and 3 members from the Jesuit community. The Club also has an additional 2,627 contacts, consisting of non-members who have attended events or visited the Club’s dchoyas.org website. This 19% increase in non-member contacts during the past year demonstrates the strong appeal of Club events to alumni and non-alumni alike, regardless of official membership.

Communications

During the 2016-2017 fiscal year, the Club continued to communicate with its members using numerous platforms. In addition to event-specific broadcast e-mails for signature events, the Club continues to send an electronic newsletter highlighting upcoming events and recent University news. This newsletter reaches nearly 35,000 alumni in the D.C. area and remains a critical marketing tool for both the Club and University alumni initiatives. With an open rate of 15%, the most recent newsletter was viewed by over 4,000 area alumni. The Club also posts daily on social media using its Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Georgetown.Alumni.Club) and Twitter account (@DCHoyas). As of June 30, 2017, the Club had 2,204 “likes” on Facebook, a 7% increase from last year, and 801 Twitter followers, a 13% increase from last year. The Club’s Facebook activity reaches nearly 1,500 individuals each week, on average. In addition, 82% of the Club’s posts receive a response or comments from followers. Active social media engagements serves as a driver for high event attendance as well as fundraising. Over $36,000 was raised by area alumni in 1789 minutes as part of the 2017 Blue and Gray Day Challenge. Much like the diversity of members, the Club’s Facebook followers also span all age groups and are fairly evenly divided between males and females.

Events and Programming The Events and Programming Committee is the umbrella committee responsible for designing and implementing events for Club members throughout the year in a variety of settings. Led by Meredith Karam and followed by Sean Redmond, the Club planned, promoted, and directed approximately 32 Club events between June 30, 2016 and June 30, 2017. The Club’s events and programming in the past year included the following:

Signature Events Welcome to the Neighborhood (W2N) The D.C. Hoyas, along with our sibling clubs in many U.S. and international cities, participated in the annual Alumni Association-sponsored Welcome to the Neighborhood event on September 15, 2016. In 2016, W2N was held at Hawthorne, which is owned by a Hoya alumnus. The event drew over 300 registered guests. At this fun-filled happy hour, older alumni and new graduates alike could enjoy one of their few opportunities to network and make and renew friendships across Hoya generations. Over 1,200 Welcome to the Neighborhood attendees turned out in neighborhoods in cities all around the world! Holiday Party As Jay Gatsby would say, “A little party never killed anybody,” so over 100 Club members celebrated the holiday season Gatsby-style at F. Scott’s on December 8, 2016, sadly the last time that F. Scott’s will be available for our party after many years there. Guests enjoyed a performance by Georgetown men’s a cappella group, the Chimes, heard holiday greetings from the then executive director of the Alumni Association, and danced to holiday music provided by a Georgetown alumnus deejay. Members also gave back, at registration, to the Chimes in support of its annual trip to Georgetown’s signature John Carroll Weekend. Advent Mass and Brunch Every year, the D.C. Hoyas provides alumni with the opportunity to come together during Advent for Mass at Dahlgren Chapel and brunch at 1789 Restaurant. On Sunday, December 18, 2016, approximately 40 attended Mass and were welcomed to the festively decorated John Carroll Room at 1789 for a brunch buffet that included Sweet Potato and Bacon Hash, Quiche, Salmon and other scrumptious dishes. Guests listened to Holiday music as

they ate, and were joined by Interim Vice President for Mission and Ministry Father Howard Gray, S.J., and Holy Trinity Pastor Father Kevin Gillespie, S.J., who spoke after the meal about Georgetown's Jesuit heritage and the importance of Advent. The brunch gave D.C. Hoyas a chance to step back from the commotion of the Holiday Season, enjoy good food and company, and remember the spirituality associated with the time of year. At the conclusion of the event, each attendee was given a handmade Georgetown Christmas ornament.

Educational Events D.C. Alumni Reception & Conversation with Tony Arend & John McNeill: “The State of the University, the State of the World, and the State of the Planet” On September 21, 2016, the D.C. Hoyas gathered at the Wagner Alumni House for an informative discussion with two highly-regarded Georgetown Professors, Anthony Arend and John McNeill. Professors Arend and McNeill's joint presentation covered the State of the University (including the upcoming Centennial celebration of the School of Foreign Service), the State of the World, and the State of the Planet (including global environmental developments as well as discussion of issues impacting the D.C. metropolitan region). Guests enjoyed a

light reception after the presentation. Anthony Clark Arend is a prominent international relations and law scholar, tenured professor (a Georgetown graduate!) and Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Affairs at the School of Foreign Service. John R. McNeill is one of the world's foremost environmental historians and a tenured professor in the History Department as well as a faculty member in the School of Foreign Service.

Sommelier Events Fall Winery Trip to the Vineyards at Dodon On October 22, 2016, approximately 30 Hoyas boarded a bus at Healy Gate that took them to the alumnus-owned Vineyards at Dodon in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, the first foray into Maryland for this popular annual event. Guests were presented with information about the long history of the property, which has been in the same family’s hands for many generations, and the reasons that it is ideal for producing grapes. The budding and experienced oenophiles also enjoyed several featured wines that were presented by a dedicated wine educator. The wines were paired nicely with a very enjoyable lunch, and guests enjoyed their own purchases of wine to bring with them back to their homes. As usual, the event was a big hit! Sparkling Wine Tasting One of the Club’s most enduring Sommelier events is its annual sparkling wine tasting during the week between Christmas and New Year’s. The annual favorite was held at the City Tavern Club in Georgetown on December 28, 2016. Guests enjoyed a guided tasting by Jody Jackman from Winebow, who presented five fine wines, including the Imperial 2011 vintage Cava, Pierre Gimonnet Champagne Cuve Cuis 1er Cru de Blanc, Barnaut Champagne Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru, Le Mesnil Prestige Cuvee 2005, and the Marenco Brachetto d'Acqui. Members also enjoyed some light appetizers and an all-around great time! Whiskey and Spirit Tasting In the Sommelier Committee’s experience, spirits tastings are typically very popular, and our Twin Valley Distillers Tasting was no exception. On April 27, 2017, the D.C. Hoyas gathered at the City Tavern Club in Georgetown for a special event open to club members only. The event, which was advantageously priced, featured locally produced spirits from Twin Valley Distillers. Attendees enjoyed light fare and a tasting that included eight spirits, including single cask and small batch bourbon and rye whiskeys, as well as rum and a coffee liqueur.

Community Service Events Food Drive At our Club’s Holiday Party on December 8, 2016, alumni brought in generous donations of canned goods, pasta, snack foods, and breakfast items for N Street Village, a local shelter that provides homeless and low-income women with emergency and long-term support, such as housing, meals, and job training. The response from the alumni who attended was overwhelming with over 100 food items collected. The volunteer coordinator at N Street Village was extremely grateful and thought our timing just before the holidays could not have been better. Wreaths Across America On the morning of December 17, 2016, we joined with the University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the Hoya Hoop Club, and Hoyas Unlimited to lay wreaths on each Arlington Cemetery gravesite. As part of National Wreaths Across America Day, we participated in 1 of over 1,100 simultaneous wreath-laying ceremonies across America and around the world. Through this ceremony, we remember our fallen veterans, honor those who serve, and teach our children the value of freedom. Despite the wintry weather, it was an emotionally powerful event. We plan to continue this unique tradition! MLK Day of Service Once again, our alumni club partnered with Georgetown University’s Center for Social Justice for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Because of the forecast for freezing rain, the event was held on-campus only. After a breakfast of bagels and coffee, volunteers participated in three service projects. One served our Georgetown neighbors experiencing homelessness by putting together much needed hypothermia kits, and two served chronically and terminally ill children by making crafts and letters. This was followed by small group reflections.

Georgetown Neighborhood Clean-Up

On April 1, 2017, alumni, university staff, Georgetown residents and current students joined forces to beautify the area of West Georgetown. The morning started out cool, but turned into a beautiful day. We met at the Car Barn patio before breaking into groups and canvassing the surrounding neighborhood. Rakes, shovels, gloves, and drinking water were

provided by Georgetown University’s Office of Neighborhood Life in order to collect trash from the streets, pull weeds in nearby parks, and clear debris from storm drains. They also conveniently arranged for a Georgetown garbage truck to stop at every corner to pick up our trash bags. It was a great way to get back to the Hilltop and give back to the community. Martha's Outfitters Service Event Due to the overwhelming generosity of local D.C. residents, there was plenty for Georgetown alumni to do at Martha's Outfitters. Martha's Outfitters is a community thrift store that not only provides an affordable shopping option, but ensures no-cost clothing and housewares to thousands of neighbors in need. Our many volunteers brought multiple bags of donations to the sorting area where we sifted through the many, varied items. Household items were separated into bins; clothing was inspected, categorized, placed on hangers for display, and then brought to the merchandising area. The many customers kept our alumni busy searching for specific items, returning empty hangers, and at the check-out counter.

Men’s Basketball Events Basketball events are traditionally the Club’s most widely and frequently attended events, and bring together Hoya alumni of all ages and schools. Away Games For the 2016-2017 season, D.C.-area gamewatches were held in one location, Penn Social in Chinatown/Penn Quarter, for the second straight season. These gamewatches brought together the Georgetown Club of Metropolitan Washington, D.C., Hoya Hoop Club, Hoyas Unlimited, Casual Hoya, and Stonewalls all under one roof. Over the course of 8 holiday and weekend away gamewatches, including a 130-person turnout against Syracuse, crowds of alumni and friends enjoyed Penn Social's food and drink specials (with our own newly designed and purchased Georgetown Club of D.C. koozies) and the company of fellow Hoya fans, along with several big screen televisions and sound throughout the bar tuned into Hoya basketball. Men’s basketball gamewatches were overseen by D.C. Club Membership Chair John Crisafulli. Home Games In conjunction with Hoya Hoop Club, the D.C. Club co-hosted pre- or post-game events for every men's home basketball game. The majority of these were held at Gordon Biersch in Chinatown/Penn Quarter.

Alumni Services and Social Events Over the course of the year, the Club organized events intended to help educate D.C. Hoyas on topics of interest, and bring D.C. Hoyas together to socialize. Some of these events included: Homebuying Seminar Another popular event for local alumni is the club’s Hoya Homebuyers Seminar series, hosed by alumni in the real estate industry. On January 12, 2017, D.C. Hoyas gathered at the Wagner Alumni House for another sold-out event. The discussion welcomed Hoyas looking to buy their first place, invest in their first rental property, or move up in the real estate market in 2017. Local real estate expert and nationally-awarded Realtor Harrison Beacher (COL’08) gave an overview of the current market trends and best practices along with co-presenter Matthew Sines of Towne/Fitzgerald Financial. There also was a question-and-answer session after the presentation as well as a reception with light appetizers, soft drinks, and wine.

Catholic Engagement and Spirituality On April 5, 2017, D.C. Hoyas ventured to the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies Auditorium for a conversation about Pope Francis organized with the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought & Public Life at Georgetown. The panel discussion featured Fr. Pat Conroy, S.J, who hosted the Pope when he visited the Capitol in 2015, Mark Shriver, author of “Pilgrimage: My Search for the Real Pope Francis,” and Michelle Siemietkowski (COL’92, G’98), the Director of Graduate and Undergraduate Student Formation in Georgetown’s Office of Mission and Ministry. It also explored what Pope Francis’ message means for Georgetown alumni and students, as well as other young adults in their personal, spiritual, professional, and public lives. A brief reception followed the panel discussion. Hoya Happy Hours Summer Neighborhood Hoya Happy Hours To reach out to our many members throughout the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area, we continued our Neighborhood Hoya Happy Hours. On July 28, 2016, Hoyas and friends simultaneously gathered at Uncle Julio’s in Bethesda, Maryland, Il Fornaio in Reston, Virginia, and Right Proper owned by alumnus, Thor Cheston, in Washington, D.C. It was a chance to meet other Hoyas of all ages and schools and enjoy great happy hour specials.

Halloween Hoya Happy Hour Focusing our efforts on one location, we held our Halloween Hoya Happy Hour at Mission, owned by alumnus, Fritz Brogan. We dressed in costumes, sipped margaritas, and nibbled on Halloween candy. Amidst the Halloween-themed decorations, we all had a great time meeting up with old friends and making new ones.

Winter Neighborhood Happy Hour At our Winter Neighborhood Happy Hour at Paladar in Rockville, Maryland, everyone enjoyed mojito and sangria cocktails, yucca fries, tacos, and deviled egg appetizers. Hoyas exchanged business cards and very much appreciated our club making an effort to hold events in the suburbs. By bringing together Hoyas within their own communities, we hope to continue to strengthen our alumni network.

Spring Neighborhood Hoya Happy Hour Continuing our quarterly tradition, Hoyas again mixed and mingled in Arlington, Virginia at the Liberty Tavern, a generous sponsor of our annual fundraiser, University Row. Happy hour specials included Smirnoff Mules and Aperol Spritzes. It was another great opportunity for us to meet Hoyas and friends!

University Row at Virginia Gold Cup The 19th Annual University Row at the Virginia Gold Cup was held on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Great Meadow Park in The Plains, Virginia. This legendary Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase classic has run each spring since 1922 and traditionally heralds the spring social scene in the local D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and Mid-Atlantic region. For those involved with their local alumni clubs, University Row is the place to network, see and be seen. Formed in 1999 by the Washington, D.C. area alumni clubs of William and Mary, James Madison University, and University of Virginia, University Row has become the largest party at the Virginia Gold Cup. Overseen by the Alumni Events Alliance, University Row is entirely volunteer-run and all profits benefit alumni programming and undergraduate scholarships. This year, there were seven tents at University Row, and approximately 1,000 guests in attendance. Georgetown purchased a half tent and invited alumni from Georgetown as well as alumni from our partner schools (i.e., American University, Howard University, Boston University, and others) to buy tickets to our tent. The Georgetown half tent was one of the first to sell out, proving that despite lower event tickets sales than in the previous year, University Row continues to be a popular event for D.C. Hoyas to attend. By purchasing a half tent at the event, the Club earned both a spot on the University Row Steering Committee and the right to vote on all event logistics including catering, transportation, and sponsorship. The Georgetown University Row Steering Committee team was led by Meredith Karam, and included Club Community Service Chair Ping Chen.

Alumni Sports In addition to the sports we love to watch, there are also those we love to play, and the Club sponsors three successful alumni sports teams that welcome and include alumni of all ages, skill levels, and schools. Most of our alumni sports teams participate in the over 60-school strong Capital Alumni Network (CAN), which is a league of college-affiliated teams associated with their respective alumni chapters in the D.C. area. Georgetown’s alumni teams are known for on-field and off-field success, sportsmanship, and fun. Over the past year, dozens of D.C. Hoyas played in alumni basketball, flag football, and softball as part of the CAN program. The Club’s alumni sports were coordinated by D.C. Club Membership Chair John Crisafulli, who also plays on the softball team and coaches the basketball team. Softball The D.C. Hoyas’ CAN Softball team finished the 2016 season as one of the top squads in the 64-team league, with an 11-3 overall record and a division championship on the heels of a 7-0 mark in division play. The team's big wins came over league powers Florida, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, and Georgia. The Hoyas advanced through the first weekend of the league tournament and won their first game of the second weekend over UConn before falling to eventual runner-up Maryland in the Round of 16. As of this writing, the Club is off to another great season in 2017, and with a 9-3 record has already secured its second straight division championship. Our distribution list includes nearly 100 local Hoyas, approximately 25 of whom are regular contributors to the team in one way or another, plus a strong core that has played together for a decade. The group includes undergraduate and graduate alumni spanning nearly 20 years, and covers all skill levels. The Hoya softball team is led by Coach Steve Wanczyk (MA '04), Assistant Coach Mark Murphy (SFS ’06), and Assistant Coach John Crisafulli.

15

Flag Football The Club’s CAN flag football team finished the 2016 season 6-4, good for fourth place in the Ali Division. Big regular season wins came over Penn State and Villanova. In the tournament, the team beat Villanova again before falling to Johns Hopkins, who went on to win the tournament for the third year in a row. Each team is responsible for providing referees for other teams’ games. The flag football team includes players from multiple schools and class years (and even a few significant others) and is led by Coach Wynne Kelly (COL '00) and Co-Coach Thomas Quinn (SFS ‘07) .

Basketball The basketball team, led by Coach John Crisafulli and Coach Nick Hart (MSB '10), finished the season in third place in the Stead Park Division with a record of 5-3. This included huge wins over league powerhouses Syracuse (the two-time defending champion) and Notre Dame. The team consists of players of all skill levels, including former Hoya basketball players on both the men's and women's teams. The Hoyas finished the season with a loss to Indiana in the league tournament.

Undergraduate Engagement The Club organized the seventh annual Dinner with Alumni Program during April 2017. This marked the sixth year the Club has spearheaded this program focused on student-alumni engagement. We are proud and honored that this program won the “Social Program of the Year” Award from the GUAA in 2015. Students enjoy chatting and networking with a Georgetown alum over dinner, get to learn what life is like after leaving the Hilltop, and learn about the different career opportunities available to Georgetown alumni. Of course, students also appreciate the opportunity to get away from campus for a delicious meal. For us Georgetown alumni, we all would have loved a local alumnus or alumna to host us and some of our friends for a delicious dinner. That may not have been part of our college experience, but now alumni have a chance to give back to Georgetown by hosting current undergraduate students for a meal.

Alumni who sign up for this program agree to host a certain number of students at their home or at a local restaurant of their choice to give the students a chance to meet and learn from them. This year, we were fortunate to have approximately 57 alumni, including various members and leaders of the Georgetown

University Alumni Association Board of Governors and Board of Regents, as well as the D.C. Club, graciously and generously offer to host current approximately 160 sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Working with the Office of Advancement, the Club managed the student registration process so that the students could choose the alumni host that best aligned with their interests.

Graduate and Professional School Engagement

Georgetown University Law Center (GULC) Engagement Club President and Law Center Liaison Eamonn Moran, has continued the Club’s efforts to connect and reconnect alumni from Georgetown Law with the larger Georgetown community, and encouraged and facilitated Club membership. The Club helped market and promote several Georgetown Law events, including the Georgetown Law Women’s Forum and the Law Center’s Annual D.C. Alumni Luncheon. In addition, the Club partnered with the Office of Alumni Affairs in June to help market and promote a panel discussion at the Law Center titled “Current Issues for Athletes and Sports Unions.” The panel included distinguished sports professionals. All Georgetown University and Georgetown Law graduates and students were invited to join leaders from some of the leading players' unions from the nation's top sports leagues. This faculty-led panel touched on a wide range of interesting issues that are faced by professional athletes, their families, and the sports themselves. The panel was immediately followed by a networking reception. The Year Ahead

Our purpose is to connect Hoyas to Hoyas and foster lifelong ties to Georgetown University. We endeavor to do so by providing a robust events and programming calendar to interest alumni and students of all ages. We remain focused on efforts to increase membership, reach alumni of varying ages, backgrounds, and interests, and ensure that leadership has access to a wide range of viewpoints, which is critical given the Club’s proximity to the University and highest concentration of alumni in the world. We look forward to continuing to enhance Georgetown’s presence in the nation’s capital and promoting the professional and personal development of area alumni through education, social interaction, professional networking, athletic opportunities, and service to those less fortunate. We invite you to join us in these endeavors!
