Motherhood is the biggest gamble in the world. It is the glorious life force. It’s huge and scary — it’s an act of infinite optimism.

My Mother: She is beautiful, softened at the edges and tempered with a spine of steel. I want to grow old and be like her.

It may be possible to gilt pure gold, but who can make his mother more beautiful?

To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power.

Our Volunteer Program is 70 Strong! Thank you, Charlotte!

A retired Hospice Program Director, Charlotte has a long history of volunteerism. Charlotte helped develop the Interlakes Community Caregivers volunteer program, and in 2016 helped to set up the Volunteer Program at Taylor Community.

As a result of Charlotte’s work at Taylor Community, we now have a very active volunteer base of 70 individuals who log more that 300 service hours each month!

Charlotte Leavitt, Taylor Community

Volunteer Coordinator AND

Joseph D. Vaughn Award Recipient!

Thank You from Charlotte

Thanks to the residents and staff of Taylor Community for being a part of my receiving the “Vaughan Award.” Yes, your volunteer service and the staff including volunteers in their services were necessary for the recognition that I received. Therefore, I share this award with each of you!

Governor Sununu greeted all and read the proclamation declaring the month of May “Older Americans Month.” The Joseph D. Vaughan Award began 57 years ago, by Joseph D. Vaughan, who advocated for “older” residents while serving in the New Hampshire legislature. It is presented to an individual or couple 60 or over in each of the 10 counties of New Hampshire, who have given outstanding service. As each award was presented the details of their service were read. It was interesting to hear the variety of volunteer services. It included driving people to appointments, setting and cleaning up for special suppers, assisting with church related programs and many other services.

Again, thanks to all Taylor volunteers and staff for all you do to help others, our friends, neighbors and community. I share this award with you!

Dear Residents,

It has been requested more and more often lately that we publish a resident directory which includes email addresses. For many, email is a very convenient method of contact, and for some, preferred.

Past policy has been that we do not share email ad-dresses at all, and it is not noted in our resident data-base whether or not individuals have “okayed” sharing this information.

Our Resident Telephone List is an internal document for Taylor Community Residents only; it is not shared with outside parties by Taylor Community.

Residents with email addresses on file at Taylor Com-munity will soon receive an email asking about their email preferences. Please be sure to reply to the email if you do not want your email address published in the directory. You need not reply if you want yours to be published.

Email addresses of residents who have chosen to be included will be added to the directory by June 15.

Four days after setting sail for New York City, with 2,223 people on board, she hit an iceberg at 11:40pm on April 14, 1912 and sank at 2:20am on the morning of April 15. 1,517 people were lost. Scam Alert! Don’t Call Back!!!

The FCC and State Police are warning of a surge in Robo-Calls known as the “One-Ring Scam.”

The scam targets potential victims with a series of “one ring” hang-up calls, usually from the 222 area code, often in the middle of the night. The scammer hopes you’ll be concerned enough to call the number back to find out what’s going on. If you do, the trap is sprung!

Your return call acts like a 1-900 number, ringing up a huge toll charge you’ll see on your next phone bill.

Prayer Shawl Ministry at Taylor Community Do you like to knit or crochet?

This group was previously known as the Prayer Shawl Ministry at the Sanbornton Congregational Church. The name has been changed to be more inclusive, and also because we meet at Taylor Community.

We thank Karna Feltham for her many contributions, and welcome Beryl Charlton for her willingness to lead the group! Nan Baker will assist Beryl when not away.

If you are interested in joining this fun group, they meet the first and third Tuesday of each month in the Dry Craft Room at Woodside, from 1—2pm. Several members like to meet at Noon in the Bistro for lunch first and would be pleased to have you join them.

Staff Spotlight Susan Denopoulos Abrami

I first met Susan in October of 2015 when she came to Laconia to interview for the Vice President of Operations position. I liked her right away. And even though I needed to go through the process of interviewing several additional candidates for the position, I pretty much knew from that moment that Susan was the ideal candidate. She has since proven time and again that the decision to hire her was the right one. The consummate professional, Susan presents the perfect blend of knowledge for the job and compassion for the individual.

In a short period of time, Susan has steered the resident experience at Taylor Community through many changes. When she arrived, there were ten residents residing in our Nursing Center and turnover amongst staff was high. The staff that remained was operating a bit differently from one shift to the next. Now, over three and a half years later, the Center is at full capacity, staff turnover is at an all-time low, and her team of caring professionals is operating as a well-synchronized team. The residents have never had a stronger voice advocating for them.

Susan has always been firm, fair and consistent. Never once have I seen her lose her composure. She was and is very good at encouraging initiative and cultivating teamwork. She has always been a good listener and is always there to offer guidance and support to a team member, a family member or a resident.

A college professor of mine once said, “A manager always does things right but a true leader always does the right thing.” Susan is always about doing the right thing, always concentrating on what truly matters: the resident experience and showing each and every employee a level of respect and appreciation each one deserves.

Most of us would agree that being able to leave a legacy is something we all desire to do. Susan has succeeded in doing this. Taylor Community is so much better off for having Susan bless us with her presence these last several years. Let’s hope we can all say that when it is our time to retire.

Susan, now that the time for your departure grows near, let me finish by saying congratulations on a truly impact-ful and meaningful career. Thank you for the time you have spent at Taylor Community. It has been my pleasure to work alongside you. I am proud to have been able to count you as part of the Taylor Team and even prouder to call you a friend.

May 29 — The Red Violin The intricate history of a beautiful antique violin is traced from its creation in Cremona, Italy, in 1681, where a legendary violin

maker (Carlo Cecchi) paints it with his dead wife’s blood to keep her memory alive, to an auction house in modern-day Montreal, where it draws the eye of an expert appraiser (Samuel L. Jackson). Over the years between, the violin travels through four different countries, where it has a pro-found impact on all those who own it. Community House, 7pm.

Lecture Program

May 16 — Grief, Neighbors, and Walking Each Other Home

In the later decades of our lives, we all walk a path that includes the loss of loved ones and neighbors. Yet, we do not have to walk this path alone. To borrow the title of a wonderful new book by long-time friends, Ram Dass and Mirabai Bush, we are all Walking Each Other Home — bearing witness to the joys, sorrows, and stories of our lives — helping each other hold a spiraling mix of grief, love, and hope. How do we nourish ourselves and our neighbors during times of grief, loss or sorrow? How do we taste and share joy and wonder along this path? What does it mean to walk each other home? Speaker Dan Kusch is the Spiritual & Bereavement Care Coordinator at Central NH VNA & Hospice. He facilitates bereavement support groups in the region and at Taylor Community that offer opportunities for participants to walk with each other through the experience of grief.
