It’s important to know what type of wood your garden furniture is made

from so that you can select the best product for the job.

Hardwood garden furniture is most commonly made from hardwood types such as teak, meranti or iroko, characterised by the dense nature of their wood which gives it some natural weather resistance. However, it still needs regular care and treatment in order to maintain water-repellency and prevent the wood losing its colour.

Softwood garden furniture is usually made from pine. Unlike hardwoods, softwood has a poor natural weather resistance so it’s vital that softwood is thoroughly protected against rot, decay and moisture damage.

RYADDED WAXESSubstances added to the product to provide water shedding properties. They help to limit water ingress into the wood and so help to protect it from water damage.

BARE WOODWood in its natural state and has no surface finish such as paint, varnish or stain.

DEEP PENETRATINGNormally refers to a system designed to carry active ingredients into the wood (wood preserver) to lengthen protection from insects and rot. Deep penetrating is also used in relation to natural oils which provide longer-lasting nourishment to the wood or when referring to waxes that help maintain water repellency longer.

GARDEN WOOD CLEANERRemoves dirt, slimy growth such as algae, moulds and fungi from exterior wood. Many cleaners contain active ingredients that kill fungi and algae, helping to minimise re-growth. It is advisable to use wood cleaners prior to (re)decoration.

HARDWOODHardwood is derived from trees that predominate in tropical climates. Such trees are slower growing than conifers, giving wood that is denser and more resistant to splitting and cracking. Many species are naturally durable (resistant to rot and insect attack). European examples are oak, walnut, ash, beech and chestnut while tropical examples are mahogany, teak, iroko and meranti.

OILOil products in garden woodcare are formulated using oils from natural and sustainable materials such as linseed, wood oil, etc. They tend to be used on hardwood garden furniture or decking to provide a matt, enhancing and natural finish. Oils penetrate into the wood to nourish it and replace the natural oils lost through weathering. As they don’t form a film on top of the wood they tend to look more natural than stains.

PRESERVERPreservers contain active ingredients that protect the wood from either insect attack, fungal attack (rot) or both. They often come in colours, which makes them a superior alternative to stains due to their additional protective properties. Preserving products may not always be called ‘preservers’, so check that the product prevents rot & decay to be sure you’re buying one.

PRE-TREATED WOODUsually refers to wood that has been treated with a preserver. Wood can be treated by brushing with a wood preservative or can be bought pre-treated such as most timbers sold for decking.

RESTORERA product formulated to remove the grey appearance of weathered wood. It brings back the natural colour of wood and prepares it for decoration and protection via oiling or staining. Restorers will only work on wood that hasn’t been previously stained or painted but it can be used for previously oiled wood.

ROUGH SAWN WOODRough sawn wood is left as it is after the wood trunk has been sawn into planks. It tends to be used for fencing and sheds. All Cuprinol shed and fence products have been specifically formulated for use on rough-sawn garden timbers.

SMOOTH PLANED WOODSmooth planed wood is planed after the trunk of the tree has been sawn into planks. It is usually used for joinery and furniture but also summerhouses, gazebos and higher quality sheds and fences.

SOFTWOODSoftwood is derived from evergreen, relatively fast growing conifers predominating in cooler climates. Softwoods form the main building timbers in Europe, North America and New Zealand. Generally, softwoods are light weight and more prone to cracking, splitting and attack by wood boring insects and wood rotting fungi than hardwoods. Examples are pine, spruce, hemlock, western red cedar and douglas fir.

STAINStains usually give a rich colour finish to wood that allows the grain and texture of the wood to come through. They protect it against the weather whilst still allowing the wood to breathe, which is important as it ensures that any moisture that enters the wood can escape and doesn’t damage the wood from the inside.

We have produced product colours as accurately as printing will allow. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee an exact colour match, and the colours contained in this guide should not be relied on as such. The appearance of the actual colour can be affected by the substrate and the texture of the surface. Wherever colour testers are available, please use them on the actual surface to which the product is to be applied before undertaking the application. This will give you a stronger indication of the appearance of the actual colour. If a colour tester is not available, then try the product on a small, inconspicuous area of the surface before undertaking the full application.
