RAPID ROHAN KEEPS NOTHING IN RESERVEPoole Pirates reserve Rohan Tungate has made short work of success since joining the Dorset side this season and is holding nothing back whatsoever as he pulls in the points for his new club. His swashbuckling style has captured the hearts of Poole fans as they witness his determination on the track which has already been rewarded with some big scalps on the Wimborne Road shale.

Having cut his teeth in British Speedway last year with the Premier League’s Ipswich Witches, rapid Rohan is now forging ahead in the top flight with the Pirates for 2013.

Pirates’ Speedway boss, Matt Ford, has often stated that it’s his whole team of seven riders that have to pull together to bring home the points and, this year, he has

been thrilled to see that some of his lower order men have been delivering in spades. At number seven in the line-up, young Aussie skid kid Rohan Tungate has been startling the fans and pundits alike with some brave and daring displays of riding at Wimborne Road this year. He and British starlet, Kyle Howarth, have combined to give a much needed “sting” in the tail of the Pirates’ track attack.

Diminutive Tungate, who weighs in at just over eight and a half stone, joined the Pirates during the winter to embark on his first full season as a top flight regular and has certainly proved his worth on the shale.

The little man with a great big heart has kept the Dorset faithfuls on the edge of their seats at Poole Stadium and has been a major feature in dozens of wheel to wheel tussles around the Wimborne Road circuit.

“We have had something of a difficult start to 2013, mainly due to early season injuries and a couple of riders not quite hitting their best form,” says Ford, “our reserves have been a real spark of inspiration though and have been giving us something that every team craves, a number six and seven that can really score points... It just makes such a difference to the team and supports the top guys when they are not fully firing.”

For “Rapid” Rohan it’s been a dream start to his Elite League career; he even finished as the Pirates top scorer on their visit to Wolverhampton earlier this year.“I think the guy has a terrific attitude,” continues Ford. “When we first got together to talk about coming to Poole there was absolutely no hesitation because he was as keen as mustard to join us. There was no real negotiation to be done; he just wanted to come here.”

Tungate’s determination to perform for the Pirates was underlined just a few weeks ago when, after two unbeaten rides at Wimborne Road, he smashed into the safety fence at full speed in his third. The gritty speedster was quickly on his feet to the cheers of the crowd and, despite a painful groin injury which caused him to miss the rest of the match, he was delighted to take his place in the side 24 hours later at Peterborough.

Ford sums him up brilliantly, “I think, despite his small frame, his stature is steadily growing and it is his destiny to be around for a long time to come!”

SUNSHINE BRINGSNATIONAL LEAGUE SURVIVAL Once the rain clouds over Chapel Gate lifted and the Sun shone, so did the mighty Lions in their bid to retain their status as a National League Rugby outfit at the end of their first ever campaign at Level Four of the game.

After spending an uncomfortable week sitting in the relegation zone, a stunning ten try victory over basement boys Barking restored the balance before an equally impressive victory away at Canterbury ensured that survival was almost certain. The win at Canterbury typified the determination of the players and a five try haul was a just reward for a well-disciplined performance. On the final day of the regular season a 29 -14 win against Dings yielded another five league points which would ensure safety, though the Lions were sensible in leaving nothing to chance as a highly improbable shock result for Lydney at Hartpury College was only foiled in the last minute with a try to Hartpury. So, we live to fight another day and we will have another crack at National League Rugby next season.

There have been some inspirational performances throughout the season by a committed group of players led from the front by captain Alan Manning. His record of 92 consecutive appearances at Tight Head Prop and captaining the side 97 times is the envy of everyone in the game. 35 year old Loose Head Prop “Butch” Carrell has matched Alan’s commitment and he has played a major role in our dominant scrum. Hooker Fraser Wilford completes a Front Row that has battled hard all season. Losing Tim Sward to a triple fracture of his cheek bone was a bitter blow although Jonny Peart has stepped up the plate to fill his shoes with Tim Collier lending his vast experience on occasions.

We bid farewell to talisman Lock Callum Forrest who heads off to the Southern Hemisphere on his travels and he will be sadly missed as he epitomises everything that the Lions stand for in terms of playing and helping to coach the junior sides. The back row has seen some exciting players in various combinations. Tommy Booth has had an outstanding first season at Chapel Gate and combined well with both straight running Chris Hughes and fleet of foot Gavin Hart. The seven shirt has been shared between the pocket battleship Tom Vaughan Edwards and Charlie Grace with James Bovett also making some impressive appearances.

The Back Division included the ever present Sam Hardcastle at scrum half who scored 11 tries and Dan Pollard who converted to Full Back and scored 156 points to finish in the top ten points scorers in the League. George Drake and Ben Stevenson are both former junior England Internationals and they showed their class at Fly Half. Scott Chislett, Ben Stewart and Eddie Edwards performed well in the Centre whilst Dean Pearce’s dislocated shoulder was a bitter blow for the side. Wingers Dan Connolly and Jaryd Robinson ran hard all season causing problems for many defences.

However, the squad would have been nothing without the valuable contributions of Ben Fetherston, Andy Spikings, Luca Ferretta, Sam Veneroso, Anthony Fitch, Luke Andrews, Will Brookes, and Paul O’Brien to name but a few. My thanks go to the committee and all the back room staff who have worked so hard in this marathon season. We look forward to seeing you all at Chapel Gate next season.

Another cracking Bournemouth 7s Festival took place over the end of May Bank Holiday weekend. Packed with amazing sport, music and entertainment, around 20,000 festival fans enjoyed the three day event which has created quite a reputation over the last 5 years.

enowned as the largest rugby, netball and music event in the world, the famous festival saw over 300 teams competing in

their specific fields.

With a few subtle differences to last year, the event was again extremely well run. The ‘feel good’ vibe hit you from the moment you entered the turnstiles and the friendly atmosphere was soaked up whilst walking around the outer circuit, past the incredible skill of the Animal Tour riders and the new sport for 2013, Dodgeball. It made a popular debut...the enclosed arena was swamped with cheering spectators watching as the frenetic and exciting battle transpired inside.

The sun shone down on games played by teams from all levels of rugby. From teams who were clearly out to have fun to players who were competing at a higher level, the games constantly flowed and didn’t fail to entertain over the two days. The colourful array of kits on the pitch mixed with the bright festival flags and banners created a vibrant spectrum of colour that added to the buzzing feel of the event.

The main Carlsberg Beer tent was host to thousands of festival followers dressed in the themed ‘traffic light’ fancy dress code, kits, Disney characters, cavemen, cheer leaders plus

many more crazy creations the event is used to seeing. Walking through the festival ‘village’, the many caterers offering a wide selection of foods to suit all tastes were packed with people sat in the sun, tucking in to some fresh and delicious food.

Performing in the ten different arenas were live bands, DJs and spectacular acts and the Kids Zone had facilities perfect for families ensuring the festival had something for everyone. The Cuban Brothers headlined with an epic set on the Sunday night, performing in Bournemouth as part of their 2013 World Tour.

The exclusive V.VIP Celebrity Lounge hosted international stars including former England Captain, Lewis Moody and Welsh and British Lions players, Jamie Roberts and Alex Cuthbert. Ticket holders relaxed in the luxurious surroundings, listening to the DJ sets whilst mingling with sporting stars and enjoying great views over the main field. The games concluded with the main Viper 10 National Cup which was won by the Templar 7s and the Viper 10 Blades winning the Viper 10 Netball Cup.

This year’s Bournemouth 7s was undoubtedly the best yet. The combination of sport and music just works so well and it has never failed to be the must attend event in the area. With players out to play and people out to party, the weekend has an atmosphere that would struggle to be topped by some of the giants of the national festivals. All in all, what a perfect weekend to celebrate the close of the sporting season and kick start the UK’s summer festivals with a blast.

Ingredients

1/2 lb Saltfish (dried, salted codfish)12 fresh ackees or 1 medium onion1/2 tsp black pepper3 tbsp of butter1/2 a hot chilli pepper (ideally Scotch Bonnet)1 sweet pepper1 chopped tomato1 sprig fresh thyme or 1 tsp dried thyme

As a young boy, Floyd Gordon would help his grandmother in the kitchen. She taught him the secrets and styles of mixing Caribbean flavours, herbs and spices. One of her favorite dishes was Ackee and Saltfish a recipe Floyd would love to try and cook with her.

He patiently would watch and learn as she cooked and infused all the ingredients to make this special dish as she explained the history behind the ingredients and the dish itself.

Still today, if you speak to Floyd he smiles as he makes this dish.

Brought to you by Rhumbar Caribbean Bar and Grill

Method

• Bring a pan of cold water to the boil and gently simmer the fish for 20 minutes (until the fish is tender).

• Chop the onion, sweet pepper, chilli pepper and tomato.

• Remove the fish from water and allow to cool. Remove all of bones and skin then flake the flesh of the fish.

• Add the tomatoes and flaked fish and stir-fry for another 10 minutes

• Add the Ackee and cook until hot throughout. Stir gently to avoid breaking-up the Ackee

• Serve with Rice and Peas and add salad to garnish.

Our local film man, Dan, has been armed with two

classic sports themed flicks to review for us this month. Dan has worked

as a visual effects artist on some blockbusting movies

including Star Wars and The Dark Knight. If you’re after a film night in with a beer and

some popcorn, give these classics a try.

Any Given Sunday

Any Given Sunday is a stylishly shot American football feature, directed by Oliver Stone.

Tony D’Amato (Al Pacino), is the head coach of the Miami Sharks, a winning team who had led the field four years previously. Now with a young new team owner, Christina Pagniacci (Cameron Diaz), who has little empathy for past victories, is focused on the financial gain and rebuilding a new line of attack within the team. When she refuses to renew aging star player ”Cap” Rooney (Dennis Quaid), a 39-year-old quarterback, a third-string rookie quarterback, Willie Beaman (Jamie Foxx), goes on in his place and instantly becomes the newest young star but consistently plays outside the rules with little regard for his team mates or coach.

With his a headset on fame and money, anything goes. Pushing relations to boiling point between Beaman, the coach and Pagniacci things quickly ramp up into a fight for control and leadership for aging coach who refuses to give up his intensity. Any Given Sunday also stars James Woods as the team’s doctor, LL Cool J as a star running back, Jim Brown as a former football great turned Sharks’ defensive coordinator, Elizabeth Berkley as Tony’s favourite prostitute, and Charlton Heston as the football commissioner.

What we thought...

It’s always good to watch Al Pacino doing what he does best, plenty of shouting and Italian posturing. But equally it’s interesting to watch now super star Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) in one of his earliest films.

Kingpin

Kingpin is a 1996 American slapstick comedy film directed by the Farrelly brothers and starring Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid, Vanessa Angel, and Bill Murray

Roy Munson (Woody Harrelson) is the next big thing in the Pennsylvania bowling leagues of the 1970s and is lined up to play against wisecracking egocentric Ernie McCracken played by the legendary Bill Murray. McCracken tempts him into running a scam that goes so badly wrong; Munson’s bowling hand is comically torn off ending all hopes of stardom. Oddly he chooses to replace this amputation with a hook, which he then covers with a grotesque rubber hand.

More than a decade later Munson’s name is synonymous with failure. While on a futile trip to sell bowling supplies, he encounters Ishmael (Randy Quaid), an Amish youth who secretly practices bowling against his religion. A million dollar bowl-off in Reno against the hated McCracken, makes Munson go to extremes to enter Ish in the tournament. But, Ish isn’t as good a bowler as first thought. After an altercation at a mobster’s private alley, they flee with the tough guy’s sexy moll (Vanessa Angel), who competes with Munson to control guileless Ish’s destiny.

What we thought...

This film is a great slapstick comedy; any fans of Bill Murray won’t be disappointed as his sleazed villain is a real scene-stealer.

The year is flying by and we are nearly half way through! Hope your fitness is keeping on point? I have put together 3 tracks I’m playing/loving right now. They should keep you motivated and push you that extra bit harder in the gym! Download them asap and put them on the MP3 player.

So Good To Me (MK Remix)

Chris Malinchak I absolutely love the original of this track. Perfect summer vibe. This remix by the master ‘MK’ takes it up a level, but still using a lot of elements from the original. A looped build up with a really bouncy drop. Uplifting and happy. Get on it!

Blurred Lines

Robin Thicke Feat T.I. & Pharrell I’ve been a big fan of Robin Thicke for a long time! I was a bit late on picking up on this track up, but now I’m dropping it in every set. With added funky vocal from Pharrell and a very cool flow from T.I. this is another banger for the gym.

Reverse Skydiving

Hot Natured ft. Anabel Englund Hot Natured who brought you the huge hit last summer ‘Benediction,’ is back with another huge tune. Reverse Skydiving has a very cool funky bassline and a catchy vocal. Hitting all the right notes with the new surge of deep house that is sweeping the commercial market, this is set to be another big hit! If you like things a bit harder/deeper I suggest you check out the ‘Shadow Child Remix’ which is what I’m playing right now ;)

Until next month,Keep up the hard work!

The Game talks to local BMX legend, Jon Moore about Bournemouth BMX Club and how to get involved with this great sport.

BOURNEMOUTH BMX CLUB The club started and the track was built on the current site in 1981 and is located on Iford Lane. The club has regularly held annual national and international events. It has approx 100 fully registered members. The club is currently running number 2 out of 20 in the region and 8th nationally out of over 70. On any week, the track, which is open to the public outside of training hours, is used by 200 people up to a national race weekend when over 2500 people descend upon it.

The club holds regular coaching and club nights normally on a Wednesday. This is self funded and the club is currently trying to raise funds to bring the track up to the new (post Olympics) international UCI standards.

Riders to watch out for:

CLUB

Jon MooreAs a kid I used to race from 1981 to 1985. I then started racing again in 2006 after taking my godson down to Iford to see if the track was still there. It was and sadly I seemed to get the same buzz as I did when I was a 16 year old. I’m sponsored by Dialled Bikes who provide all my equipment and bikes, they are a British Mountain bike and BMX Manufacturer. Regionally, I race in the Super Cruiser Category which is a class that includes all the top riders aged from 16-50, yes 50! When I’m not riding, I enjoy Surfing, spending time with my daughter and putting up with my friends’ terrible dress and sense of humour.

As the first anniversary of last year’s unforgettable Olympic Games approaches, one company who is embracing the Olympic legacy is New Forest Water Park, in Fordingbridge, Hampshire. They have recently been awarded a grant by Sport England to provide adapted facilities for disabled wakeboarding and to provide an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional boat watersports.

The Jury family have been successfully running the Park for over 20 years and are proud to present a 5-pylon Wakeboard Cable (a bit like a ski lift system) to provide enhanced facilities over one of their two stunning lakes, situate in 50 acres of breathtaking Countryside.

Mark Jury, MD of the park comments, “We are a family run business and are proud to continue to offer a relaxing holiday at the Park, with the added thrill of water sport amenities. We are also delighted to formally welcome on board our main sponsor, Voltz Energy Shot, who will be empowering this activity to breathtaking new realms”.

NEW FOREST

The Rixen 5-Pylon Wakeboard Cable System, is a first for the South Coast, whereby The New Forest continues to be one of the UK’s top tourist destinations and the Park is aiming to host both National and European wakeboarding championships in the future, in order to secure an international reputation. Wakeboarding is one of several applying sports presently being considered for Olympics 2020.

In addition to the skiing, New Forest Water Park’s facilities include paddle boarding, kayaking, fun water sports (from inflatable rings/banana rides) to private island fishing, plus lakeside and woodland camping facilities (with real fires!). After a day spent on the water, visitors can then enjoy Italian catering from the Park’s newly installed state of the art Pizza oven, accompanied by live music in their Clubhouse, with panoramic lakeside views.

The Game speaks to Mark Jury, Managing Director of New Forest Water Park, at the cable opening event.

Congratulations on the cable opening today, how do you see it enhancing the park’s facilities? The cable will enhance the water park because it will open the sport up to so many more people. It’s much cheaper, you can get six people at any one time going round so more people can do it. It should do what snowboarding has done for the winter games, if it gets into the summer Olympics.

What impact will it make on the environment?Cable waterskiing is much ‘greener’ than using a boat because it uses electric instead of petrol. It also has a much better effect with regards to the erosion to the banks.

Who can try it out?Everyone! You can start from 6 years old on our straight line cable, one-on-one with a qualified instructor. Once you’ve gained a certain level on that you can move onto the main cable. You have to be 11 years old for the main cable unless you have a parent there who can take you and we make sure they are proficient swimmers. To learn from age 6, is great.

How hard is it to get going? The beauty of cable skiing is because you are being pulled up, and not through the water as you would with a boat, it’s a lot easier. The great thing about it is that it’s very easy to be able to attain the next level. It’s great fun, it’s physically challenging but the steps to actually gain a better achievement are very small.

The Water Park is also helping people with disabilities to get involved with watersports, can you tell us more? We’re working with Southern Waterability. Their aim is to give active people with disabilities the chance to learn a sport which they wouldn’t normally do and the response we have had already has been fantastic. We’re working towards more people being able to take part in watersports and the new cable has been built with this in mind.

Can you sum up the fantastic new facility this Cable Park offers? It’s the only cable in 86 miles, it’s one of the tallest in the country, it uses the latest technology and we’re the first in the South. It has the best obstacles, through our sponsorship with Voltz, that money can buy and which are certified by the IWWF to be able to hold international competitions on them.

Finally, we’ve heard a lot of buzz from watersports lovers locally about the new cable, how do you think it will encourage more people to get involved? The South Coast is a great spot for watersports enthusiasts. To get value for money, calm water and somewhere that has all the facilities, the water park has it all. The lake itself is surrounded with wonderfully mature trees so when it’s blowing a force 8 gale, you can still come and enjoy the facilities as you would on a calm sunny day. There is a huge kitesurfing community in this area; when it’s windy, they won’t be here, they’ll be out on the coast, but when the wind drops, this new facility saves them driving all the way to London, they can now come here.

THIS NEW CABLE WILL OPEN THE SPORT TO A WHOLE NEW WORLD, FROM ENTHUSIASTIC BEGINNERS TO THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED,

PLUS ADVANCED RIDERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO PERFECT THEIR JUMPS AND TRICKS. MARK JURY, MD OF NEW FOREST WATER PARK

RASPBERRY KETONE:FAT-BURNER IN A BOTTLEWhat is Raspberry Ketone? For years, we have been drawn to raspberries because of their vibrant colour and sweet, tangy taste. Nutritionists are now learning that these fabulous fruits also contain ketones and believe that they are as healthy and beneficial to the body as they are delicious! Leading US Physician, author, and talk show host, Dr. Oz, even recommends raspberry ketones for aiding in weight loss. When speaking on the topic of raspberry ketone supplements he stated that they were “The #1 miracle in a bottle to burn your fat.” In fact, raspberry ketones seem to be one of nature’s best kept secrets for helping people live healthily, boost their energy, and feel great!

Watch the Doctor Oz video at:www.doctoroz.com/videos/miracle-fat-burner-bottle

The ScienceRaspberry ketone is the primary aroma compound of red raspberries. This compound regulates adiponectin, a protein used by the body to regulate metabolism. Raspberry ketone causes the fat within your cells to get broken up more effectively, helping your body burn fat faster. To get the same benefit from the whole fruit, you’d have to consume 90 pounds of raspberries.

Available from The Game Sponsor VoltzVoltz Raspberry Ketone 600mg is the highest strength PURE Raspberry Ketone available. It’s 100% natural and UK manufactured in our GMP facility. We never use any filler ingredients or chemical compounds. Each dose is safe, effective, and contains no stimulants. 100% PURE Raspberry Ketone, don’t buy cheap extracts or poor quality formulas.

Meet the Pro Brett Pitman

THE REDS ARE

GOING UP

20

The Game talks exclusively to Brett Pitman, Jersey born AFCB striker. With over 200 appearances with Bournemouth and a professional career goal count of over 100, we ask him about the recent promotion, team antics, the loyal AFCB fans and thoughts on the approaching new season in the Championship.

THE REDS ARE

GOING UP

Congratulations on winning promotion to the Championship! How did it feel to finally clinch it?A bit of relief to be honest! But obviously overjoyed…it’s what we had been working towards for the whole season. It’s a mixture of relief and joy. More joy, but, in the back of your mind you do think, ‘thank god that’s over’ and we’ve done what we set out to achieve. It was nice to achieve that with a good group of lads.

Can you tell us about the celebrations? We heard the word Vegas mentioned?!Yeah, there were 16 of us who went out to Vegas for 4 nights. The Chairman and Maxim Demin paid for us to go which was a nice gesture and the lads had a good time. It was nice to get away as a little bit of a reward and was great to get some sun and have a good time with my mates.

The team didn’t have the best of starts to the season, and then Eddie returned... Was this the biggest factor to the team’s success this year?I can’t really comment on what happened at the start because I wasn’t there either but Eddie returning changed the course of the season. It’s not rocket science to work that out. He came in and the results were there from that moment on. If he had been in from the start of the season and with the points tally they were on, we would have won the league by a ridiculous margin, so that says everything.

And on a personal level you had a fantastic season, scoring 19 goals in 24 starts including a run of 8 consecutive games. Were you eyeing up Defoe’s record?I knew it existed but I always said going into the Tranmere game, if it stops on 9 because we go up, I’ll be happy with that. It stopped and it’s nice, in a way, it’s over because people stop talking and asking about it. Obviously to score 8 games in a row which coincided more importantly with 8 wins in a row was a really nice way to get promoted.

21

Out of the goals you scored, did you have a particular favourite?Probably the one away at Shrewsbury was my best.

You were voted ‘League One player of the month’ in March. How did that make you feel? It’s nice to be recognised to be doing well but, you don’t get those kinds of rewards without your team behind you. I think in that month, we won every game bar maybe one and it definitely helps when your team is winning. You can’t score goals on your own; you need your teammates around you.

This is your second spell at the club, how did it feel to return and what factors did you consider before making your decision on the move? There were a lot of factors. The main one was when Eddie came back. I wanted to work with him again; we had a good relationship before. Coming back down here and being surrounded by people and a club I knew well played a big part, as well as the club being so ambitious.

How does the current team compare to previous teams?I think it’s a totally different club now. There’s obviously the financial backing and our squad is 20/25 players whereas before, it was 13/14 maximum. We had very good players before but I would probably say this squad is stronger.

So the season is over and it’s time to relax, what are you up to?I’ve got a 1 year old, he keeps me busy! But, apart from that, playing golf and getting a couple of holidays to enjoy some sun!

And when will preseason begin? We’re back on the 22nd June, which is early this year with the season starting a bit earlier.

How much are you looking forward to playing in the Championship again? It will be nice. It’ll be a test for our team. There are not many of us that have played in it, about 3 or 4. It will be a test, but, I think our squad is good enough to cope and hopefully excel in it.

How different to League One do you think it’ll be?I think the jump from League One to Championship is quite big. It’s probably bigger than League Two to League One but like I said, we’ve got players that are good enough and as a team, hopefully we’ll start well and take confidence from that.

Finally sum up the season for us in one sentence? We achieved what we set out to do.

Quick Fire Questions:Who is the best player you’ve ever played against? Defoe or Bale when we played Tottenham in the pre season friendly.

Who is the best player you’ve ever played with? Darren AndertonWho is your best mate in football? Probably Shaun Cooper or Warren Cummings.Who do you think is the best player of all time? Messi. If you weren’t a footballer what would you like to have been? A golfer.Do you have any pre-match superstitions? Loads! I always tie my laces in the same spot on the pitch before kickoff, that’s probably the main one.Who are you most looking forward to playing next season? To be honest, they’re all going to be good games. Brighton will be a good game because of its location. It’s almost like a derby without being ridiculously close. That will be a good one in their new stadium. In Bournemouth, what are your favourite places to:Eat: Café ShoreChill: My house!Play: The Casino or PrivaFinally, describe AFC Bournemouth fans in 3 words...Patient, loyal and excited!

Thanks for talking to us Brett. The Game wishes you and the team all the best for the new season in the Championship.

On the back of last month’s SOS Business Breakfast we thought we would take this opportunity to remind readers about the power of networking and the benefit it can have to your business and staff. Master networkers are individuals who realise that networking is a life skill. Networking events seem to be everywhere nowadays so take advantage of the plethora of events that take place across Dorset each month. These are opportunities to raise your game, stand out from the crowd and be noticed as a professional mover and shaker. Great networkers realise these occasions are about connecting with different cultures, ages, special interests groups and networks to advance themselves in the business community. This is about making strong connections, identifying synergies, sharing interests and how you can align yourself to make contact with spheres of influence, and forming win–win strategic alliances and mastermind groups.

Developing your personal ‘elevator pitch’ is also a must for these occasions. This is something that very successful, global leaders and company founders speak strongly about. In a nutshell this is a 30-60 second overview of yourself as a business person that will hook the listener in to impress with what you do, and how you do it. In essence an elevator pitch is a brief, persuasive speech that sparks interest in you and/or your company. Elevator pitches should be interesting, memorable, and succinct. They need to explain what makes you or your organisation, product, or idea, does as well as it does and why it’s unique. The latter is incredibly important.

Julie Cook-Hughes, Managing Director & Founder of SOS recruitment

Standing out from the crowd in business

Once you have your elevator pitch ready use it to introduce your company to potential clients and customers. Make sure when drafting your pitch you identify your goal, explain what you do and practice! The art is in the delivery too.

The recent SOS Business Breakfast as mentioned above saw over 100 business professionals attend at The Cottonwood Boutique Hotel to share common interests and swap business ideas. The Founder of SOS, Julie Cook-Hughes, welcomed guests throughout the morning and gave an exciting speech about the world of recruitment today. Guests were treated to hearing the Leader of Bournemouth Council provide a useful insight into the Council’s plans for supporting business, enterprise and community over the next decade. The business breakfast proved a high success all round, having the Dorset Chamber of Commerce present, as well as AFC Bournemouth too.

A variety of businesses benefit from the event and this is only the start of Business events, hosted by SOS recruitment, to come. SOS have been providing temporary, permanent and contract recruitment across the south west for 13 years so whether you’re looking for staff or a great new job, talk to us about your requirements.

“The SOS Breakfast Meeting was a great opportunity to get introduced to other local businesses and talk about ways to work together. We’re looking forward to the next one!”

Steve CrawfordMD, Live Elite

“The breakfast event hosted by SOS was a great success. I met lots of new businesses, had a chance to put faces to names and enjoyed listening to the talks from the presenters.”

Thanks for talking to us, Jordan...what got you into kitesurfing and how long have you been doing it? I started kitesurfing when I was 12 years old. My dad had been kitesurfing for about 14 years before, and after one session, I was hooked! I’m a keen sports man. I played football, rugby, took part in athletics and participated in anything else the school could throw at me! But, kitesurfing is my passion.

What do you love about it the best? As many kitesurfers know, going high is a great feeling. Also perfecting a new trick, which feels good to land. The sense of freedom and being at one with the sea is epic!

Tell us about any comps or wins you’ve had...I started competing 6 months after I had initially learnt. At my first competition on the British Kite Tour, I managed a respectable 3rd and ended up 4th overall in the under 16s and landed a 2nd place podium at the finals in Blackpool. The year after that, I was determined to get a better result, and in 2012, I became Junior Champion and Youth Vice Champion UK! In May 2013, I headed out to France for the European Junior Kitesurfing Competition. I ended up 9th in the freestyle and 6th in the boarder cross in the 14-15 categories. It was a hard competition and the level of riding was really high!

28

Do you take part in any other water sports?Yes, in fact, I enjoy most water sports. I started with kitesurfing and the other water sports followed. I often go to the cable wake boarding when there is no wind, surf when the surf is good,

sometimes in Poole or we head down to Croyde. I also had my own RIB when I was eight and have pretty much grown up around boats and the water.

What do you think of the conditions locally in Poole and Bournemouth and along the coast? There are so many different spots which makes the conditions good in any direction of wind! Water sports enthusiasts who live on the south coast take their local spots for granted, and believe me; I’ve been to some pretty awful places around the UK kiting. One place

comes to mind, Redcar, with the power stations as a back drop!

What surf/wind reports do you use? There are many wind forecasts available on the web. My favourite weather station is XC weather as it’s easy to see what the direction of wind is, by showing a picture of the UK along with an animation of different weather fronts that are coming in. I also use ‘In The Elements’ which is a local webcam that is in Poole harbour, to see live footage of what the conditions are.

Where is a good place for people who may be thinking about giving it a go?Poole Harbour is definitely the ideal spot to learn kitesurfing and

many different water sports. Its shallow waters are a fantastic place to learn and gain the confidence. The bay is nice and enclosed and gives you a sense of security. Easy Riders are the top dogs to get a lesson for kitesurfing with years of experience. Andy Gratwick, founder and owner of Easy Riders, has an excellent reputation for quality teaching, and is also BKSA head of training.

What’s your favourite kitesurfing hot spot in the surrounding area? I have many local spots which are great to kite in around the surrounding area. My favourite is Poole Harbour in a NW wind direction but when the

wind is a north to an easterly, I like catching the ferry to Swanage and kiting at Bramble Bush Bay or Studland. The best spot is the secret spot though...

And your favourite hangout place? My favourite hangout place is with the guys in H20 sports, or down the beach on a windy summers day with all the kiters. When there is no wind, you will find me on my half pipe in my garden skating with my friends or at the cable.

Finally, where in the world would you most like to kite surf? If I had to pick a spot to go to it would either be South Africa or Brazil. Both amazing spots and I hope to go there soon to get some training in over the winter months, ready for another year of comps and events.

Thanks for talking to us, Jordan and we wish you all the best with your kitesurfing in the future.

The Swell

HAVING POOLE AS MY LOCAL SPOT IS SWEET.

How do you balance your studies around your training?Studying and training is never really a problem for me. If I go kitesurfing after school, I make sure that I get my work done when I get back home! If I’m away at a competition, I revise when I’m not on the water!

What are you training for at the moment? This year, I am training for the Junior World Cup in Spain. This comp is in July and it’s the first World Cup for the Juniors. I am looking forward to this competition, as it will be good to test myself along with the world’s best junior kite surfers!

What’s your best or favourite trick? My favourite tricks are ‘blind judge 3s’ and ‘hintenburgers’ because they feel really powerful and look good when you land them! I also love to do ‘shifty 5’s’ and ‘Slim 5s’ because I’m stoked when I land them! When the wind is strong, I also love to do massive kite loops because you’re living on the edge and they‘re dangerous!

Have you ever been in an accident?Luckily, I haven’t had a real bad accident. I have had a few nasty crashes but nothing too serious. Nothing that a good rest doesn’t sort out overnight!

THE SOUTH COAST IS PROBABLY THE BEST PLACE TO KITE AROUND THE UK.

Pure Warrior is a local clothing brand with a difference. It was created to raise money to make a difference to one person’s life but have grown and evolved to inspire and support many. The formidable strength and courage of athlete, Naima Mohamed, was the inspiration behind the brand. With Captain Naima sadly gone, the clothing line continues to thrive just as her memory shall live on. Now we honour her with the Pure Warrior brand, helping to raise money for cancer research and cancer support foundations through every purchase made.

she battled Cancer right to the end. I also am a member of the WBC World Boxing Council, the WBC boast great champions, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali to name but a few, with the WBC I work to combat bullying, we, the PURE WARRIOR team plan to work very hard against bullying, we want to educate by way of school talks, workshops and leading by example. Many of the most high profile athletes were bullied as children, who ever would have thought Mike Tyson was heavily bullied? He was.

What sports do you and your fellow founders take part in?I, myself, box. I have been a huge boxing fan since I was 14, I love the sport, it’s an art, not brute force and ignorance as a lot of critics will have you believe. I have always enjoyed taking part, the training, competing and everything about it. In 2008 I formed a boxing club, the club has gone from strength to strength and now in its 5th year, we are fortunate to have the former English Champion, Steve Bendall, as our coach and trainer. We really could not get a better trainer; a true warrior himself and good friend. Dale since the age of 11, has been involved with American Football. He has competed at the very highest level in the UK and throughout Europe. He is now a coach for the Bournemouth Bobcats where he shares his knowledge and skill to the new era of American Footballers, the fastest growing sport in the UK. Rachid last year took up American Football and recently has started boxing… maybe the next champ? Ha ha.

Can you tell us about some of the sports men, women and teams who Pure Warrior supports? We support a number of sports people and teams. We are currently sponsoring Tom Welch, an upcoming amateur Super Heavyweight boxer. He has just turned 18 and we are enjoying working with Tom very much, he is based in Brighton. (pictured above)

How can people get involved ?People can get involved with Pure Warrior in many ways, we like to get involved with people and organisations that do good and inspire others, we are currently putting together fitness boot camps, we are making the most of the summer and helping to promote a fitter, healthier way of living, for all people, of any age or ability. Also, we are working closely with as a local restauranteur whom is compiling a very healthy menu. This will be called the WARRIOR menu. We held an open evening to launch our WARRIOR FEAST; it was a great, a wonderful night, a gathering of warriors, friends and family. We really welcome anyone or business that think we could support what they do or vice versa, with the main aim of improving people’s lives.

www.purewarrior.co.ukwww.purewarrior.co.uk/boxingPURE WARRIOR facebookPURE WARRIOR@MASPromotions

Hi Marc, can you tell us about Pure Warrior and what gave you and your co-founders the idea to launch the clothing range?PURE WARRIOR was formed in Nov 2012 to raise money for Rachid’s (co-founder of the brand) sister who was battling cancer; she was receiving treatment in San Diego, USA at a cost of $1,000 a day. After putting on an event and raising £4,500 for her, she unfortunately lost her battle and died just before Christmas. By this time we were so passionate about the brand we had produced that we vowed to continue and use it as a way of inspiring others, supporting others and donating to worthy causes.

Which charity do you support and how do you fundraise? We have recently donated £1,000 to children with Cancer, this was a donation of our profits, Dale, Rachid and I felt that it was the right thing to do. We have not done anything to fundraise as yet, purely given our own profit from clothing sales we have made.

‘Pure Warrior’ is a great, strong name for a brand, what was the inspiration behind it and what does it mean to you?Well, the name PURE is very significant as we have strong beliefs on how we do things, who we work with and what we want to achieve, we want to support and inspire those that face adversity or have been told they can’t achieve, with our help we want them to achieve. Naima was a WARRIOR as

The Pure Warrior clothing range is more than a t-shirt or hoodie to wear out and about... It carries our values, raises money for charity and spreads the message of the Pure Warrior brand. ASAHI BRITISH BEACH POLO CHAMPIONSHIP 201312 & 13TH JULY – SANDBANKS BEACH

As a highlight of the South coast’s summer season, the Asahi British Beach Polo Championship will return to Sandbanks, Poole for its sixth year on the 12/13th July 2013. Supported by some of the best arena polo players the hotly anticipated beach festival promises more excitement and glamour both on and off the pitch. England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales will be competing with Ireland, keen to retain the title after a gripping final against Wales last year. There is floodlit night beach polo on the Friday evening, visiting international polo teams and of course the ‘bonkers’ beach polo after parties. Arena polo is a spectacular spectator sport and played on a stunning Blue Flag beach (preferably sundrenched!) brings the very best out of the players and guests. The thorough bred ponies and high goal players love playing on the beach in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd. Jack Kidd who is a regular for England at the Championships says ‘I have been lucky enough to play polo all round the world - Sandbanks is still one of my favourite weekends of the year. The polo is insanely competitive, the guests are always on great form and the beach parties well - they are simply the best!’

Whether visitors are dining in the waterfront Sandpolo Hospitality marquee, enjoying the exclusive VIP experience, soaking up the atmosphere with General Admission tickets, or just choosing to sit outside the fence on the purpose built beach viewing area it is a chance for polo and Sandbanks to show off its attributes to about 5000 seasoned and new supporters each year. To complement the polo The Asahi British Beach Polo Championship offers a host of other activities such as ‘have a go’ polo, the Oakley Ladies Beach Volleyball, fashion shows, the charity Audi V Polo Pony race and the vibrant retail village. The polo is an excuse to dress up (or strip off for a quick swim), stay up late and indulge.

Founded by Johnny Wheeler and David Heaton-Ellis the publicity for the inaugural Championships in 2008 was kick started by Piers Morgan drawing people’s attention to Sandbanks as ‘Britain’s Monte Carlo’ .

Despite the onset of the recession a growing number of businesses use this ‘boutique’ event to entertain clients, reward their staff and promote their brands. Whilst sponsorship is still an important revenue stream new ideas such as camel polo (stand by for the elephants!), floodlit beach polo, equine displays and the appearance of the odd celebrity has kept people talking about the event and coming back year on year. So why does the Championships keep returning to Poole? Johnny Wheeler says ‘a cooperative council and a large stunning easily accessible beach are the vital ingredients for us as event organisers. Some good weather, the best polo players and an enthusiastic crowd is pretty important too’.

AFTER DARK AT SANDBANKSPolo players and supporters have something of a reputation for letting their hair down. The polo ‘beach after parties’ at Sandbanks provides seasoned and new comers to the sport with a very cool but exciting place to relax, socialise and dance until the small hours of the morning. On the Friday evening Cocoloco will increase the party tempo after the floodlit beach polo match with the most original DJs connecting with the mixed generation audience. The closing party on Saturday night brings an unmissable eclectic mix of Amika – London sounds to rock the Jurassic coast. With the title sponsors Asahi beer providing a refreshing balance to the flowing champagne and excellent food to fuel the dancing it is rare to see people leave the beach before the 1am survivors photo.

QUOTE THE GAME

morale really isn’t a problem for us as we operate as an extended family, supporting one another through everything, both on and off the derby track.

Who is your sporting role model?I’m in awe of all the people who take part in the London Marathon year after year. Watching it always makes me cry as it restores my faith in mankind. Runners like Mo Farah and Usain Bolt inspire me too, because doing what they do doesn’t involve any equipment, just pure human brilliance.

Have you had many injuries?Oh yes! Mega bruises are kind of a given in this game, and I suffered a spiral fracture to the ankle when I was a rookie London Roller Girl. I was in plaster for eight weeks, have a metal plate and five screws in my ankle and the scar to prove it. Roller girls wear scars and bruises with pride – they show that we are constantly learning, pushing and bettering ourselves.

Highlights so far include? After our first public home game in Bournemouth in December 2012, I stood aside with my dad, looked out across the hall at all these amazing women skating for their county and said, ‘I did that’. The realisation that not only had my dream of running a roller derby team come true, but that I had helped all these incredible people achieve their dreams of becoming ‘roller girls’ was awe-inspiring.

What are your hopes and goals for the future?I want DRG to continue to grow, succeed and, most importantly, change lives for the better. My short-term goal is to build up our local fan base in Bournemouth and across Dorset, and to raise the money to enable the league to travel around the UK to compete. Roller derby is an unfunded sport so the only money we have comes from us, the skaters. Further into the future, I’d like DRG to grow large enough to support various teams i.e. home teams, an experienced all-star travel team and intermediate B and C travel teams. I’d love to start a men’s team too. On a more personal level, I have unexpectedly been awarded ‘Best Blocker’ by opposing teams on two occasions and I plan to continue pushing myself to truly be the best blocker I can be.

Find out more:www.facebook.com/pages/Dorset-Roller-Girls/173804386023479

charlie

simondsWhat got you in to skating?I’ve been skating most of my life, about 25 years I’d say. My dad used to take my brother and I to a roller disco every Saturday afternoon when we were little. I fell in love with skating and have had wheels strapped to my feet ever since. I first read about roller derby in a magazine article about London Roller Girls. I took one look at the photos and thought, ‘I want to do that!’ I joined them a few weeks later.

You are co-founder of the team, when did you decide to form the Dorset Roller Girls and why?I eventually left London and came home to Dorset. I missed roller derby incredibly and wanted to start a league of my own. I was contacted by Grace (soon to be Grace Disorder) who’d discovered roller derby in a similar way to me and wanted to start a league but knew nothing about the sport. She brought Ester in to the mix (Gill T. Pleasure) and the combination of her business experience, Grace’s people skills and my knowledge of derby was all we needed to get the wheels in motion.

Tell us about any competitions or wins you’ve had? This winter we took part in the first South West UK tournament, organised by various roller derby leagues in the South West. It was our first public bouting season and we were delighted to come third over all, with some big wins against Wiltshire Roller Derby and Kernow Rollers. We’re now organising some home games here in Bournemouth for this summer before the tournament starts up again in November.

As coach, how do you motivate the girls to keep up morale?I coach all DRG rookies while ChuChu Rocket coaches the Travel Team and the rest of the league. Teaching women to skate and watching their confidence and self-worth grow week by week is such a rewarding experience. I hadn’t ever taught anyone anything before DRG got started so I approached coaching the only way I knew how, with honesty and passion. At the first meeting we had back in January 2011, I told the group that my aim as coach was for all of them to end up far more skilled than me and, in most cases, that’s exactly what’s happened, so I must be doing something right! Keeping up

We’re speaking to local women involved in different sports across the area to find out their motivation, passion and story about their desire to compete.

I’m Cannon Fire, Co-Founder and Director of Dorset Roller Girls (DRG), Dorset’s first and only roller derby league. Roller derby is a full contact sport played by women on quad roller skates. Two teams skate around an oval track and each team has one point scorer, a fast, agile skater called a ‘Jammer’. Her aim is to fight her way through the ‘pack’ made up of all the other skaters, lap the pack and repeat as many times as she can in two minutes. For each member of the opposing team she passes she scores a point and, at the end of the hour-long game, the team with the most points wins. The aim of the pack skaters, the ‘blockers’, is to assist their jammer and stop the opposing team’s jammer by getting in her way or knocking her over. It’s a fast-paced game for women of all ages, shapes and sizes.

Keep some parts of the session

competitive: This always get the juices

flowing and more work done.

In the average gym you are left to your own devices, to fend for yourself to try to get what you want from training. For some this is great, they know what they’re doing and what they need and they smash it. For others it can be a real problem; unsure of what to do and no one to guide them, they are floundering. I see it all the time when I go to commercial gyms; there are loads of things that people are doing that hold them back from making real gains. So I thought I would help lay out a few tips to make your training more effective and ultimately speed up your progress towards your goals.

Keep a training journal: How can you get better if you can’t remember what you

did last time?

Leave your phone in the locker room:

Way too much time is wasted on

phones.

2

6

7

Have a training partner: Someone

to motivate you will always help; ideally

they’ll be a bit stronger than you are so will push you harder.

Lift with good technique: If you don’t

you’ll get hurt, then you can’t train and will get

nowhere.

Stop the half reps: It’s been proven again and again and again that for the

biggest increases in size and strength you need to

do the largest pain-free and safe range of motion that

you can.

Make small improvements regularly: Your body needs regular overload to keep

getting better. Small increases in weight will keep you improving while keeping

your technique safe.

His dedication to improving his athletes and his personal drive to get better every day make him a coach who leads from the front and gets results.

36

9

Warm up: There’s no debate, warming up helps you train

harder and safer. You’ll lift more weight and get more results.Pick a few major lifts and stick with them: Make consistent

progress on 3 or 4 big compound lifts by training them for months at a time. That way

you’ll really get strong.

Ditch the gloves guys: If you can’t handle slightly sore hands and calluses then get out of the gym.

11Keep moving: Most people

don’t need big rests between sets. Get off the bench

and pair it up with another exercise to get more done in

the same time.

Don’t go to the gym: Sometimes the best thing for your training

is a change of environment; get outside and do something different. A bodyweight circuit in the park, hill sprints, beach

training. Use your surroundings to keep you fresh.

Intellihouse FC was founded to bring a group of friends together who had

all played for different teams and levels over the years. Founded by the current player/manager, Steve

Clarke, Intellihouse play their football in Hayward Sunday Division 7. Now

in their second season and based at Chapel Gate in Christchurch,

Intellihouse have settled into a well-oiled machine (sort of!) and were

awarded the coveted Bournemouth FA ‘Team of the Week’ accolade in

February, following another fine performance.

MANAGER: STEVE CLARKE

The Clown – who keeps team spirits high?

That has to be Richard ‘Jonno’ Johnson, purely for his legendary dance moves when we’re out on the town. You’ll find him on the dance floor busting out his Ricky Gervais style moves, whether there’s anyone on there with him or not. I believe he’s currently working on a new move called ‘the badger’, so watch this space.

Best Tekkers – who has the skills to pay

the bills?

It’s a tossup between Joe ‘Jordan Henderson’ Singer and Lee Sham, but I’d say Joe, as Lee normally ends up losing the ball before getting a pass away! Dan Hayward gets a mention, as whenever he gets possession he starts singing a Brazilian samba tune whilst juggling the ball at his feet.

The Cheat – who loves a dive?

We’re an honest bunch (no, really!), so we don’t like to cheat, but the guys would probably say me. I spend most of the time on the floor, but I’ll maintain that as a defender, I have to go in hard and inevitably get hurt. I’ll never live the pitch side ambulance incident down either, after directing the ball into my own net using my face and getting concussion. It wasn’t a dive, honest ref!

The lightweight – who’s first to let the

side down?

Simon ‘Violent’ Leonard. You’d think with a nickname like that, that he’d not let anything get in the way of playing on a Sunday morning, but he’ll use any excuse to get out of a game after making himself available. From the sniffles to work commitments, he’s dropped out more than every other player in the team put together over the last two seasons!

Mr Vain – who absolutely rates themselves?

That’s Dave ‘Fire FM’ Taylor. His hair is always immaculate when he steps on the pitch, and he’s

always dressed immaculately when he arrives at the game. His luminous orange and blue boots scream ‘look at me!’ as well. He plays in goal and out on pitch, and to be fair he’s pretty tasty at both – but he’ll always let you know when he’s had a good game.

Biggest liability on and off the pitch?

Definitely Martin ‘Deano’ Dean. Match fit for Deano is one hour’s sleep and a few litres of Jack Daniels in his system. When we’re out on the beers, he’s the first one to order in the Jager-bombs, and the last one standing, whilst leaving every other ruined player in his wake.

Worst Dress Sense – who needs to update

their threads?

James ‘Crofty’ Crofts. Every week he’ll roll up on his moped sporting a bright orange coat that can be seen for miles. Safety first, I agree, but there’s no accounting for taste there, and the helmet really sets the ensemble off. Dan Hayward gets another nod also, offending everyone’s eyes with a Liverpool shirt every Sunday!

Biggest Bottle Job – who always ducks out

of a tackle?

Matt Cowley (sorry Matty!). He’s about the same height as Peter Crouch and should be winning everything in the air, but whether he doesn’t want to mess his hair up or what, Aaron Lennon would get a head on it before him!

The team social spot – where is your desig-

nated club house on a Saturday Night?

Normally round one of the lads houses playing Fifa or poker until 5am. Either that, or tucked up in bed nice and early, getting all the rest needed to provide a stellar performance at kick off in the morning.

Who’s the longest in the shower?

Big Dave King. Enough said!

We’ve recruited local nightclub owner, JOSH SIMONS to work through our list of challenges trying out some of the area’s best activities and to be our ‘Have a go hero’.

osh valiantly survived the heat at Bikram Yoga last month. We thought it was time to get him out in the fresh air and try a sport

which is becoming quite a craze at Meyrick Park. Touch Rugby is played with mixed teams and has all the pace and excitement of rugby, but without the hits!

Thinking back to your last challenge, how did you feel after your session at Bikram?I felt enlightened. Bikram is great for the mind. I asked the instructor if she could teach me to do the splits. She asked me how flexible I am. I told her I can’t make Tuesdays :-)

This month, you’re going to be playing Touch Rugby with Oakmeadians RFC. Have you played any rugby before?I used to bunk off Rugby at school to play Golf. My Rugby teacher hated my guts. I actually got drafted in to play in one Sevens tournament which we remarkably won. I managed to not take a hit all day. Fast hands.

Are your fitness levels up to the challenge?!The last time I ran properly, I weighed in at under 12stone. A long time ago.

Have you done any preparation for this one?10 Marlboro Lights today and 3 strong Espressos. Never felt more ready.

AFTER…You look like you’ve had a good workout and you lasted well on this one, how did you find it? It was great. I love competitive sport generally. You are working out without realising it. It beats the treadmill which I find mind numbing.

This was your first challenge as part of a team, how do you think you did? There is no ‘I’ in team. I played with a great bunch of guys, plus one very athletic girl too. They take it seriously but also have fun. A great mix...

Now you’ve tried Touch Rugby, do you think you’d give full contact a go?!Absolutely no chance I’m playing full contact! This is the perfect alternative though. All the technical parts of rugby remain, without taking any big hits from 7ft 20st Hulks. I don’t need that at my age.

Describe ‘Touch Rugby’ in three words...Technical, competitive, sociable.

Do you think you’ll take part again and did you enjoy it?I would definitely play again. Touch rugby is a great sport and the group that were playing made the whole experience really enjoyable. I’m a relative novice but picked up the rules in 5 minutes and towards the end I felt like Jeremy Guscott in his prime. Highly recommended!

Well done Josh and get ready for next month’s challenge!

CHERRIESUp the

The ebb at the club was low, the ‘rollercoaster’ was plunging at break neck speed towards the hard floor of League One. It would take something huge to bring this club back together. Step up Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall. The duo had guided the Cherries through a promotion and into a play-off spot in their first spell at the club and, as they trod down the plush green carpet of Dean Court on their return, the fans suddenly believed that things could be turned around on the south coast. That belief transmitted to the players too, “I remember Eddie’s first game, he wasn’t in charge but he was coming to watch, there was just a buzz around the stadium and I think all the lads thrived off it and that’s one of the main turning points of our season,” said club captain Tommy Elphick about the return of the pair. A ‘turning point’ is an apt description. Exactly three months later and the Cherries had gone 18 games unbeaten and were sitting just shy of a play-off place. Little more than a month after that and they were sitting proudly at the top of the table and if it wasn’t for a 96th minute winner for Doncaster against Brentford on the last day, the League 1 title would have been Bournemouth’s. How did the pair manage to change things around with such remarkable speed? This togetherness can be seen clearly on the training field. Howe and Tindall enjoy working with individuals and small groups, performing short drills to fine-tune one aspect of a player’s game before testing this in a short, informal match. “We’re trying to make training enjoyable, trying to bring fun to the group and also have a serious work element.” When asked about his coaching style, Howe replies that he’s “very hands-on”, which you might expect from a man who had a promising playing career before a knee injury prematurely ended it. At the end of the training match, Howe claps his team off the pitch before approaching Harry Arter. He puts his arm round the midfielder and whispers something in his ear before moving on to Eunan O’Kane for the same drill. “I enjoy working with the players, trying to make them better, that would be one of my big passions. A better understanding of the game, technically better, all the

aspects that go to making a great footballer we try to work on all the time.” The focus that has been instilled into the players derives from the training ground. Every exercise is thoroughly dissected beforehand so the players know its purpose. “There’s a lot of method to our madness when we go out and train,” says Elphick. “We work towards a Saturday so we’re not just going out there for the sake of it or to work on things that we don’t need to work on.” Whilst coaching badges, training routines and knowledge of the game are all crucial aspects of management, the interpersonal skills of modern day coaches are often underestimated and it is that communication and family ethos that seems to be the key to the club’s recent success. Tindall echoes Howe’s comments, “I’d like to think we’ve got a good relationship with the players to get the best out of them. I like to think we’re very caring in terms of wanting to make them the best they can be.” Josh McQuoid, a young player who has played for Howe and Tindall at Bournemouth and Burnley, cites the communication of the pair as their strongest asset. “They speak to you a lot and let you know what’s going on. They’ll always tell you straight and won’t muck about but in a good, positive way to improve and help you.” These communication skills transfer off the pitch as well, as Tindall explains, “We put a lot of our personal time into trying to help the players, not only on the training pitch but their lifestyle and any area we feel we can help them with. If it’s not our specialist thing then we’ll try and help them by getting in specialist people to improve them the best they can.” The techniques that Howe and Tindall employ are quite clear. A good relationship between the team off the pitch is the foundation of great football on the pitch. When this is utilised in conjunction with their caring and rigorous approach to training, you can begin to see why the club have been so successful under their guidance. Cherries fans who suffer from vertigo might want to hold on tight because the ‘rollercoaster’ is beginning to climb very high. Article: Jasper Taylor // Pictures: Seeker News

“The first thing we did was try to unite the

players together... get everyone fighting for each other, everyone working towards one

common goal. I think if you’ve got that you’ve

got half a chance.” Eddie Howe

FROM RELEGATION SPOT TO PROMOTION – HOWE? It’s a popular cliché in football to describe a season as a ‘rollercoaster’. Though that tired metaphor is actually quite accurate in the case of AFC Bournemouth this year. Back in spring, as the clocks rolled forward and the nation’s football leagues edged closer to their grand finale, the Easter story had particular resonance with certain fans on the south coast. The story

of the second coming of a man who they worshipped, a man who they believed could perform miracles and make them see the good in life again. Recite that tale to any AFC Bournemouth fan and they’ll probably reply, “Yep, it was great when Eddie returned.” The Cherries started the season under the managerial partnership of Paul Groves and Shaun Brooks, who had previously been managing the youth team. It was no secret that they inherited a good group of individuals, who, as a squad, could easily be challenging for promotion. The team remained as individuals though and, for whatever reason, the pair couldn’t unite them and they lost their jobs in October with the club fourth from bottom after just one win.
