THE LANDLORD’S REVIEWAs we are well into the winter months, we’ve given our monthly beer boy, Paul, a good ‘ol stout from Marston’s to review this month, Oyster Stout 4.5% vol. Apparently in London back around the time of Dickens, Oysters and Stout were described as the poor man’s meal. There are no oysters in Oyster Stout, which is good for me as it would’ve put me off my fish and chips! It has a creamy smooth flavour which has a hint of chocolate to it too, and was nicely topped off with a slight coffee flavoured head. It was purchased from Tesco’s but available from many other outlets.

DOWNHistory: David is one of the country’s elite coaches, having gained the RFU Level 4 coaching award. His impressive experience of the game has seen him coach the England Schools side between 2000 and 2005 and England Junior National Academy camps both at home and overseas. He is the Director of Coaching at Bournemouth Rugby Club and for a number of years was Head Coach of the Dorset and Wilts Senior XV. His expertise and vast knowledge of the game has lead to him mentoring individual players up to international level. He is highly regarded by his peers.

The new season is now well under way and the new additions to the Lions squad have made an impact but the standard is high and the players have to work extremely hard. The first four matches saw the Lions beating the other two promoted clubs, Canterbury and Chinnor at Chapelgate. The trip to Redruth was made all the more sweet when the Lions brought a losing bonus point back home and they could have stolen the game right at the death. However, Shelford, Worthing, Henley and Gloucester’s Premiership Academy team from Hartpury College were all very big, powerful and ruthless in their finishing. Lions aspire to play in the same style as the top teams in the league but

that remains work in progress. The immediate challenge is to play with the same intensity against Southend, Taunton and Launceston as that will yield victories which will move them to a higher place in the League.

Ben Stevenson joined the Lions from Premiership club London Welsh and he been highly influential so far this season. His speed of thought and vision has given the Lions an edge in all areas of the pitch. Luca Firetto has returned from Italy where he played professional Rugby and Adam Higgins has returned from Canada where he played last summer. Bryanston School teachers Tommy Booth, a former Welsh junior international and George Drake, a former England Students International both bring a wealth of experience to the club.

Its great fun playing in the National Leagues and everyone is enjoying the challenge. However, winning is all important and that has to be the main focus for the Lions in the next few weeks.DAVID IS SPONSORED BY BONSAI LOUNGE

The average Christmas day feast apparently contains a jaw-dropping 6,000 calories – 4,000 more than women are supposed to consume daily and 3,500 more than men.

An average portion of potatoes roasted in corn oil contains 9g fat whereas a baked potato will only contain 0.4g fat. Try baking small potatoes instead of the traditional large ones.

A portion of roast turkey with skin on has 5.8g fat, by cutting off the skin will you will make a fat saving of more than 50%.

You could save yourself another couple of grams of fat by making your bread sauce with skimmed or semi-skimmed instead of whole milk.

Go for larger servings of Brussels sprouts and carrots. These are low in fat and high in antioxidant nutrients provided you don’t boil them to death.

The traditional chestnut stuffing is much better for you than sausage meat and a 100g serving of the former will trim away around another 90 calories.

By saying no to a slice of streaky bacon, you will save 84 calories and 6.7g fat.

THE EATOn average, the 25th December is a 6000 calorie day, up to three times our normal intake! With Christmas Day fast approaching and the potential for the waistline expanding, we’ve got some easy tips so you can fill your belly without scrimping on your feast. It doesn’t have to be about overeating and filling yourself with empty calories. Just by making a few alterations, you can gorge on a great lunch without worrying about the aftermath. You can even pack it full of nutritious vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to help you get a head start on the New Year health kick.

Look out next month for some healthy New Year recipes to start the year as you mean to go on.

SPORT FLICKS

The big screen has seen some pretty amazing sports

inspired films over the decades from old school

classics to modern greats. So, we’ve dusted off some

DVD’s from the vault and pressed play on the antique

VCR to recap and review two movies each month

with a sporting theme.

Jerry Maguire 1996. TOM CRUISE, CUBA GOODING JNR, RENEE ZELLWEGER

A ‘feel good’ film about Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise), an elite sports agent who grows a conscience, gets fired and starts out on his own with only one client. From having it all to losing it all, Maguire takes on the task of rebuilding his status and clients in the field with the help of one believer, an ex co-worker and single mother, Dorothy Boyd (played by Zellweger). Along the way, he realises what his life was missing, and faces the harsh truths of re-building his empire, this time with integrity.

Coach Carter 2005. SAMUEL L. JACKSON, RICK GONZALEZ, ROBERT RI’CHARD

A true life story of controversial champion coach, Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) who takes on the bad attitude Richmond High School basketball team to teach them there’s more to life than crime, drugs and even the game. Carter sets out to clean up the players both on the court and in their personal lives by imposing a strict regime for good grades and respectful behaviour as requisites to being granted permission to make the team. Carter is provoked to locking the team out of the gym until their grades improve, causing objection from the community.

What we thoughtCombining drama, comedy, romance and sport, Jerry Maguire is a good, easy to watch flick. It’s got something for the guys, something for ladies, good acting, and a solid script. Although full of quotable lines that were said by every other person back in ’96, the film actually has a lot more going for it with a strong storyline by writer/director, Cameron Crowe.

What We Thought

There’s little original about Coach Carter. A well used plot of a schoolteacher elevating his pupils to achieve their full potential. But, what prevents Coach Carter from being dismissed as a case of déjà vu, is the strong performance of Samuel Jackson in the title role. All in all, we enjoyed the film, inspiring, but not life changing.

TUNEAGEDJ Charles Music to train to

We have enlisted the help of international music director and PRIVA night club resident, DJ Charles Brafman, to keep your iPod packed with the latest sounds to inspire you to go the extra mile during your training.

Music is at a great point right now with my iTunes overflowing with new, quality tunes! Here are three tracks to get you moving through December.

One good thing

about music,

when it hits you,

you feel no pain.

Bob Marley

The 21 year old superstar from Kosovo has had some great hits including her huge track with DJ Fresh - ‘Hot Right Now’. She’s back with ‘Shine Ya Light’. A super catchy track. However I don’t like the original, but, The 2 Bears have totally flipped the remix to make it a dancefloor banger. Bouncey, garagey, housey. This track has it all. Check it out as soon as you can!

This new sound of hip hop is huge in London right now with T.I. & Lil Wayne hitting the nail on the head with this club track. It’s a simple, infectious beat that gets girls dancing like crazy. I’m liking the way hip hop is going. It seems to be going back to basics. Try listening to it without bobbing your head, I dare you!

Shine Ya Light (The 2 Bears Remix) - Rita Ora

Ball - T.I. & Lil Wayne

Gold Dust (Shy FX Remix) - DJ FreshShy FX, drum’n’bass legend, has given this already massive track a great freshen up by adding in some Ska elements. A feel good track that is guaranteed to get you off the sofa and out running! I always drop this track when people are looking a little tired in the club towards the end of the night.

Until Next Month, Enjoy!

THEBOSS

Page 13: The Game Magazine - December 2012

fter playing more than 250 games for Bournemouth, the Cherries legend now finds

himself back for his second spell as gaffer. The man who clearly has the right influence at the club has managed to re-kindle the fire in the dressing room giving the players a new lease of life on the field. The league one team have since become a fearless force on their march up the table. The Game chats to Eddie Howe about his move back to AFC Bournemouth and his great start as boss.

Firstly, congratulations on coming back to Bournemouth! How does it feel?It feels good to be back. I’ve been really warmly received by everybody which makes such a difference. To be liked by your supporters at this stage is a great feeling. We’ve started well so it feels really good.

Was it a hard decision to make to step down a division? From a professional point of view, dropping a division was quite difficult but the decision for me was bigger than that. There were a lot of issues behind in terms of ‘off the pitch’ and I had to look after the people who are closest to me and make the decision that was best for my family. From that respect, once I knew the opportunity had arisen, I knew it was the right call to make.

The team seems to have found a new life since you’ve returned; what’s your secret to the success? It’s definitely no secret. I think it’s a mix of having good players, a good spirit, getting new found confidence again and getting the players to believe in themselves. I think that’s so important and I have to say, since we came back, the players have been magnificent and excellent in everything we’ve asked them to do so I can’t compliment them enough.

What changes did you make on your return?I think we changed the balance slightly of the team and made a couple of personnel changes - players that had been injured and come back into the team. I don’t know what had gone on previously, but we made changes to the training because we’ve always trained in a certain way and at a certain intensity so we continued that. This would have been different, I’m sure, from before. So, subtle changes but I don’t think anything hugely different. Players playing to their full potential and playing with confidence would be the biggest thing.

Do you miss being out there playing?Yeah, I’ve been retired from playing for a while now so I’ve had long enough for it to sink in and to know that my new role is on the coaching side. But, in saying that, there are still times when you think I’d love to get the boots on again and run around. I think I miss the fitness side a lot and you take that for granted.

A

13

Page 14: The Game Magazine - December 2012

The club had only won one league game before you came back, you must be ecstatic with the impact you have had?Yeh, I think football is a great game when you’re winning and when you’re getting a result. The feeling around the stadium and with everyone associated with the club has been excellent. We just want to keep it going as long as we can, that’s our next challenge. There’s a real buzz out there at the moment and it’s a joy to see people happy and the town really enthusiastic about the football club again. That’s our biggest challenge - to make sure that continues.

You must have made a few mates in the game over your career, who is your best mate in football? That’s difficult. With most of my close friends, I’ve ended up managing them and then ended up falling out with them because the player/manager relationship is very difficult. I’m gradually losing friends as time goes by! No, in all seriousness, I do have some close friends. Richard Hughes is probably my closest. Of course, now I’m managing him so our friendship has had to take a back seat now we’re working on a professional level but he’s someone that I respect a lot.

What is your favourite way to unwind after a game?My favourite would probably be walking the dog. Sounds boring but it relieves a lot of stress and there are beautiful places to walk around here; on the beach and in the forest. I’ll take Eric, my boxer, for a walk or play with my little boy but sometimes that can be quite stressful!

If you didn’t get into football, what route would you have gone down?If I hadn’t gone into football, I would have probably gone to university and got some qualifications. I’m not sure what in but it would have been sports related I’m sure. I enjoyed academic work and studying and I’ve taken that into my coaching and take it seriously so probably something along those lines.

Any guilty pleasures?!Yeah, I have one…listening to my favourite band, which is AHA. I’m quite proud of it. People say I should keep it quiet but they are my guilty pleasure.

Past or present, who is or was the best player ever?Ever? Really tough question. I think I will have to relate it to my era and who I’ve seen. It’s difficult to judge people from previous times. I haven’t seen anyone better than Messi, I don’t think. I know a lot of people say the same which is quite boring, but I haven’t seen anyone better.

…and the best manager ever?I was actually having this discussion yesterday so good timing for that one. My immediate thought was between two and again I’m relating it to my era so it’s Brian Clough or Sir Alex Ferguson. Their records and what they’ve achieved in the game is unbelievable.

What is your best moment in your footballing career as a player or a manager?I think I always thought my playing career would have been my pinnacle but the season we stayed up which was my first season as manager at Bournemouth when we beat Grimsby, was fairytale stuff really from where we were and the troubles we’d encountered that season. So, I think that will always be, although I never say never, one of my highlights because there were people’s livelihoods at stake and the future of the club at stake so it was an achievement I will always be very proud of.

Finally, finish this sentence – ‘I Love Bournemouth because...’…the people support their football club in a positive way.

Thank you to Eddie Howe for talking to us and we wish you continued success at Bournemouth.

When we first came in, our initial targets were to win a few games and try and build things slowly and things have taken off for us. I still think our expectations have to be sensible. We’re not looking too far ahead because we know things can change very quickly but I’d say at this moment in time, the play off’s would be a realistic ambition.

The Game talks to Miles Lee-Hargreaves, Bournemouth based local turned international star of surfing, about

the surf scene on the south coast.

Name MILES LEE-HARGREAVES Sport SURFING

iles started his love of the sea from the age of three and since then has proved he is just at home in the water as on land. He began taking surfing seriously when he was six years old and first took

part in competitions when he was ten. He has become a major rising star internationally, training and competing in the best waves around the world. Now sponsored by Billabong and Adams Surfboards, he continues to go from strength to strength in his chosen sport.

Thanks for talking to us, Miles... what got you into surfing? Thanks for the opportunity! It was actually my Granny who is South African,

she was always in the sea bodyboarding and when I went over there on a family holiday, I tried it and then eventually progressed into stand-up surfing when I was around 10 years old.

Tell us a bit about your surfing historyI started bodyboarding from a young age which then developed into stand-up surfing. I had a strong group of really close friends around the same age and we all learned together, pushing each other to get better. Having someone to go

in with on those windy, cold days was great! I still surf with the same group of friends and that competitive spirit from a young age I think really helped me to get to where I am today.

...and about some of your biggest competitions... One of the biggest wins for me was the Under 16’s British Junior Championships when I was only 14. I’ve also competed in three ISA World Junior Surfing

championships as part of the British team. It’s been amazing to represent my country on more than one occasion. The weekend just gone (28th October) was one of my biggest personal wins where I won the Pro Junior division (under 20) of the Scotland leg on the UK Pro Surf Tour.

THERE IS A PATH FOR EVERYONE AND YOU ARE NEVER JUDGED FOR WHAT YOU DO AS EVERYONE

IS DOING IT PRIMARILY FOR THE LOVE OF BEING IN THE SEA AND THE FEELING OF RIDING WAVES

Where do you want to see your surfing progress? I want to try and make a career out of it in the future but at the moment I want to progress onto the European Pro Junior Tour and try to do well on that.

Are there any places you’ve not surfed yet that are on your list to visit?Yes, Hawaii for sure! It’s the place you go to try and make a name for yourself and next year I really want to go. Its also such a challenging place to surf so it really tests and improves your ability.

What are you training for next?I’m always training to try and keep as fit as possible but my main goal in sight at the moment is to try and qualify for the British Junior team for 2013 for a 4th year in a row and then after that it is to compete on the European Pro Junior Tour in the summer of 2013.

What do you think of the surf locally in Bournemouth? It’s not as good as say Cornwall because of its location and many of the swells rarely get up the English Channel, however, when it does Bournemouth and the surrounding areas have some amazing waves which not many people know about!

What surf report do you use to check out conditions locally? I use lots of different sites from magicseaweed to BBC weather. It’s so hard to predict what the weather is going to do so by looking at more than one site you can get an average forecast.

What’s your favourite surfing hot spot in the surrounding area? It’s a bit of a secret so I can’t really say but when it’s good, it’s one of the best places in the country.

And your favourite hangout place?Got to be the beach!

Finally, what’s the best place you’ve ever surfed? I’m so lucky to have been to so many amazing places but I would have to go with Australia. There is such a large variety of waves and it’s hot!

TEAM HOYT:

GOING ONE STEP FURTHER

he bonds between a parent and child are steadfast

and unconditional but in this incredible story, a

relationship between a father and son presents an

unparalleled unity that is both moving and inspiring.

In 1962, Rick Hoyt was born with cerebral palsy after the

umbilical cord had wrapped around his neck in utero

constricting the oxygen to his brain. Doctors encouraged

his parents to institutionalise Rick claiming he would be

nothing more than a ‘vegetable’. Rick’s parents decided

against the Doctor’s advice after noticing the way their

baby boy followed them with his eyes when they walked

around the room. They took him to a children’s hospital in

Boston where one of the doctor’s told them to treat Rick

like any other child. Every day, his mother, Judy dedicated

hours on showing her son individual letters and she stuck

signs on objects around the house. Very soon, he had

learnt the alphabet.

Rick’s mum and dad continued to help him develop and

would take him swimming and teach him words as any

parents would do. They fought for people to see past his

limitations and observe his intellect and ability to learn.

Ultimately, their vision was to get their son included in the

community, take part in sports, receive a good education

and eventually get a job.

When Rick turned 11 years old, he was fitted with an

interactive computer specially built by a skilled group of

engineers. The invaluable tool meant Rick could highlight

letters in the alphabet and spell out words by tapping a

head piece attached to his chair. He famously surprised

everyone when his first words weren’t “Hi Mom” or “Hi

Dad” but were “Go, Bruins!” The Boston Bruins ice hockey

team was playing in the finals that season. From those first

words ‘spoken’ by Rick, it was clear he was a fan of sports.

T

Rick started at public school and went on to graduate

from Boston University with a degree in Special Education.

The visions Rick’s parents had wished for their son were

happening but his father, Dick was inspired to continue to

drive his son forward, literally.

In 1977, Rick heard about a charity run taking place for

a paralysed athlete. He asked his Dad if they could take

part. Dick was no runner but he said “yes” to his son and

they completed the 5 mile race, second from last. After

the race, Rick told his Dad “Dad, when I’m running, it

feels like my disability disappears.” That was enough for

Dick. Team Hoyt was born. He had found something he

could do for his son. A sport he could get involved in

just like everybody else. Dick improved his fitness levels

significantly and trained with bags of cement in the

wheelchair whilst Rick was at school.

For Dick and his son, every race, tournament and

competition they ran from that point forged the exclusive

relationship they have. Not only was Dick getting fitter, he

was giving his son a freedom he could feel by taking part

in sport as a team. As at November last year, Team Hoyt

have competed together in an incredible 1069 endurance

events, including 69 marathons and six Ironman triathlons.

In 1992, they ran and biked across the United States in 45

days completing a staggering 3,735 miles.

Dick says that there is something that gets into him when

they are running that makes them able to go faster as

a team. Rick tells his Dad that if he was physically able,

the very first thing he would do is not to compete in a

basketball or football match but would be to have his Dad

sit in his wheelchair and he would push him.

Team Hoyt’s message is ‘Yes you can. You

can do anything you want to do as long as

you make up your mind, you can do it…’

The White Christmas DipCHRISTMAS DAY 25TH DECEMBERBOSCOMBE

The White Christmas Dip is an annual charitable event in aid of Macmillan Caring Locally. Taking place near Boscombe pier, the fancy dress swim, now in its fifth year, is expected to be the biggest yet with a target to raise £5,000 for the charity.

Last year’s event saw over 70 dressed up fundraisers have their Christmas morning dip in the sea. It began in 2008 when John White and his family decided to take part in the Spartans Annual Christmas Day Swim. After dressing up in some old fancy dress outfits, they got to the pier but no-one else was there. They decided to go for a dip anyway and the occasion grew from there each year. This year, ‘The Dip’ will take place at 10.30am and all participants should be there for 10.15am. If you can’t face the water, why not go for some fresh sea air and cheer on the swimmers!

FIS Ski Cross World Cup18TH/19TH DECEMBERVAL THORENS, FRANCE

Ski Cross is summed up like this: - A group of skiers. An extreme ski run. Who can get to the bottom and cross the finish line first? It is a type of skiing competition derived from one man’s idea back in the 1980’s to make downhill ski racing more varied and exciting for spectators. Since the late nineties, it has often taken a back seat to Boardercross but more recently it has been brought into the limelight by becoming an official category in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The sport takes place on runs with different terrain features such as moguls, jumps and banks. The majority of races start with four or six competitors who race in a series of quarter finals, semi finals and final rounds in the quickest times using freestyle and traditional racing techniques. The adrenaline fuelled sport requires great strength and endurance, not to mention exceptional skill.

What is the course like?• 800 to 1200 meters long.• 150 to 250 meters vertical drop.• The course has a series of features: turns, traverses, bumps, jumps, moguls. • There is a timing system used for races.

THE GAME EXPERT:

RUSSELL JOLLEY

In January 2013 The Conditioning Centre is hosting the ‘Bournemouth Bobcats American Football Club Testing Combine’ to assess the strength, power and agility of their players. With that in mind I thought I would show you how to increase your power to get faster, more explosive and more agile.

IMPROVE YOUR POWER

n the November issue I said that strength is the foundation. If that’s

the case then power is the show piece of sport. Almost every sport requires you to run faster, jump higher, hit harder or swing quicker than your opponent and all these abilities come from being able to produce the most force in the shortest possible time = POWER. Luckily it’s very trainable and I spend a lot of time working on it with my athletes. First we develop strength, without it you just won’t have the horsepower to get big gains in your speed and your progress will be limited. Then we train across light and heavy loads to maximise rapid force production.

In all these exercises keep the sets short to make sure you produce the highest power possible, don’t confuse it with fitness training, all reps should be perfect and maximal effort with limited fatigue. You should be performing these exercises 2 – 3 times each week to see real gains after approximately 12 weeks. It is important to increase the weight a small amount each week as long your technique is still correct. You could also try some basic linear periodisation with the Hang clean reps: In weeks 1-4 do 4 sets of 5 reps, in weeks 5-8 do 4 sets of 4 reps, in weeks 9-12 do 5 sets of 3 reps. This will allow the load to increase as the reps drop and keep your power improving.

A great stretch to help with jumping and sprinting is the bench hip flexor stretch. It will loosen your hip flexors and allow you to get full use of the big muscles of the hips by maximising their range of motion. It can also help reduce back pain by returning the pelvis to its natural position. Make sure to tense your glutes while holding the stretch and you should feel it up the front of the thigh and into your hips.

If you add one, two or all three of these exercises to your programme you’ll see your acceleration, speed, vertical jump and agility all increase.

So here are my 3 favourite exercises for developing power:

The Squat JumpBody weight or add light load through holding dumbbells or a barbell. Continuous jumps for max height. Do 3 sets of 10 reps.

The Kettlebell SwingGreat for the explosive hip drive. Make sure to keep a flat back and use the hips not the arms to create the power. 3-5 sets of 10 reps.

The Hang Clean

Heavier loading; anything from 40-100+kg depending on ability and strength. Explosively jump the bar from your knees to your shoulders making sure that your hips create the power not the arms. Do 3-5 sets of 3-5 reps.

oe Laurence’s boxing background

came from his father who is from

the travelling community. He

and his brothers all inherited

the fighting blood that got them into

the ring. He started off as an amateur

boxer when he was 13 years old and

fought in several amateur fights up until

he was 21. He then got into MMA, met

Jeff (Lawson) and started learning the

ground game. The flyweight fighter

had a number of amateur semi-pro

fights and turned professional in 2011.

He had four straight wins getting into

the top 12 UK rankings. His last few

fights have been tough against ranked

opponents and he is focusing on

coming back better and stronger next

year with a view of making it into the

top 10 UK rankings.

Thanks for being our ‘Hard and Nails’

contender for December.

What’s the worst injury you have had?

I took a bad elbow hit to my forehead

from a pro fight and needed seven

stitches. Another that stands out was

when I had an open dislocation with

the bone in my toes popping out of the

joint. Those two have to be the worst.

What’s the longest tattoo sitting

you’ve endured?

It was five hours, a half sleeve on

my arm.

Have you ever thought you were going to

die in a fight?

When I got the cut from elbow to my

head I knew I was injured pretty badly

but I wanted to continue fighting as

the adrenalin kicked in. Oh, and every

hangover, it feels like I’m going to die

from a fight!

What’s your favourite (music) track to

train to?

Clubfoot, Kasabian.

Would you take a bullet for your

best mate?

No, I wouldn’t.

Have you ever been arrested?

When was the last time you cried?

When I lost my last fight. I hate losing

but I’m a good sport.

How many knock outs have you made?

I made a few TKO’s in my boxing days

but haven’t knocked out anyone from

a strike in MMA. I have choked two

opponents unconscious though!

Do you have any scary scars?

I’ve got loads of scars. My forehead, my

head on my body…the list goes on. I’m

full of scars!

If you were an animal what would you be?

I’d be a vicious monkey!

What’s the hardest training session

you’ve ever had?

It’s got to be the ‘shark tanks’ preparing

for a fight. It’s a sparring session where

a fresh man comes in every minute. You

just get absolutely battered. They’re all

hard and horrible!

TENNIS

Andy Murray gained the biggest title in his tennis career on 5th August in the Olympic Men’s Single final claiming the gold medal against Roger Federer. Following his loss to Federer in the Wimbledon final earlier in the summer, this straight set win of 6-2 6-1 6-4 in front of the excited centre court spectators was the most significant accolade to

SWIMMING

Smashing his own personal record and knocking two seconds off the British record, Micheal Jamieson rightly earned his 200m breaststroke silver medal in the Aquatics centre on 1st August. Born into a sporting family, his mother was also a competitive swimmer and his father played professional football. The capacity crowd of 17,500 were on their feet in the last 50 metres in anticipation of Jamieson’s close race against his leading opponent.

Hungarian Daniel Gyurta clinched the gold by only fifteen hundredths of a second. Jamieson’s silver was the 100th medal for British swimmers in Olympics history.

Team GB’s Rebecca Adlington went on to superbly scoop bronze medals in both the 400m and 800m Freestyle. Theolympiclegacy

GET INVOLVEDSwimming is an activity suitable for all ages, from children to adults and for all different levels, there are courses running at the local pools in the area for those who want to give it a go. Tuition is essential for beginners from qualified coaches to help you accomplish the different techniques involved in developing a strong stroke safely.

When combined with healthy diet, swimming is a great way to get fit, burn calories and strengthen your body. A 30-minute swim can burn up to around 440 calories and can equate to 45-60 minutes of land-based exercise. It’s good for the health of your heart, to lower blood pressure and can help with the prevention of some serious diseases.

“It was everything I hoped it would be - the crowd bringing

me down the final 50m was the greatest experience of my life.”

Michael Jamieson

Even though it’s over, the remarkable event that Great Britain so competently hosted has sparked a surge of sport in our country. Following the London 2012 Olympics, there has been an incredible uptake of popularity in sporting activities with children, young people and adults inspired to have a go at a new pursuit or encouraged to return to a sport of their past. We’re looking back on some of our achievements from the Games and where you can get involved locally.

his competing history. Federer’s flawed performance from the start gave a personal belief to Murray who became the first Olympics British gold winner of the men’s singles in 104 years.

Murray claimed medal number two just hours later in the mixed doubles final with partner, Laura Robson but had to settle for silver after Belarusian top seeds Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi won gold. They lost 2-6 6-3 10-8 in a champions’ tie-break decider.

GET INVOLVEDThere are over 23,000 tennis courts in the UK and plenty in our area for you to give this exciting and active sport a go. Most clubs can offer equipment or there are plenty of places both online and on the high street where you can get reasonably priced rackets. Tennis is a great aerobic activity whilst burning fat and strengthening the heart. Suitable for all ages, it is a low-impact sport improving balance, co-ordination and all-round fitness.

What was your favourite part of

the course?

Definitely finishing it. When you get to the

last section and realise the end is in sight

and then actually getting your feet back

on terra firma…that was my favourite part!

The climbing wall was really good and a

bit more physical. It was more than just a

mental challenge and I think it’s a good way

of working out. I’ll have to get back here to

work on my guns. It’s just when you have a

fear of heights and look down, the higher

you get the harder it is to get to the top.

Any wobbly moments around the

course?!

YES!, I was on the wobble the whole way

round and it was windy today so that

made it even worse! The instructor even

suggested that I try to get round the

confidence course blind folded to build my

trust..... It won’t repeat my response, but

apologies to Natalie the instructor for my

abrupt reply.

How hard was it from 1 – 5 (one being easy

five extremely difficult)

I like swimming and I like water generally so

the surfing was a 1. I’m terrified of heights so

this probably couldn’t get any worse other

than pushing me off the top of a building!

Leaving room for something that’s even

harder, I would give it a 4.

Would you do it again?

In the highly unlikely event that I ever get

invited to a corporate team building day, I

would definitely test my fears again. I will

however come back to the climbing wall and

I know that my kids will love this when they

get a little older. In summary, I can certainly

recommend Altitude as an excellent family

day out or for an innovative team building

challenge. Be warned PRIVA staff, I’ll be

booking us in soon.

Well done, Josh for completing your

second mission.

Look out for next month’s ‘Have a

go hero’ challenge where we will

be sending Josh off to the slopes

at Snowtrax for his first ever

skiing lesson!

PHOTOGRAPHY: PAUL WHITTAKER

The Game magazine has set

local nightclub owner, JOSH

SIMONS the task of trying out

some of the top activities on

offer in the local area as he aims

to become the ‘Have a go hero’.

Last month, Josh braved the

cool waters of our coastline to

conquer surfing. We thought

it looked a bit too easy so

we’ve upped the game literally

and sent Josh off to ‘Altitude’

at The Littledown Centre for

some adrenaline pumped high

rope action. Will Josh rise to

the challenge and become

Bournemouth’s very own Tarzan

or will the vertigo take over?

MISSION 2 ALTITUDE

BEFORE

Hi Josh, tell us how you felt after last

month’s challenge?

I found the surfing great fun, but if I’m

honest quite easy and I knew you would

come up with something a lot more daring

this month. When I walked up to the

outdoor assault course I realised you had

confirmed my deepest fears and upped

the stakes.

How are you with heights?

Not good if truth be told. I’ve always

known that I was scared of heights but have

never really put that fear to the test... until

today that is. Altitude certainly lives up to

its name and the thought of today’s task

has confirmed that I have a serious fear of

heights.

Have you ever been on a High Rope

Adventure course before?

No, never. I’ve stayed well clear of them. I

may have the chest hair of Tarzan, but that is

the only similarity.

How are you feeling about this task?

I just don’t want to do it, it’s that bad. (Josh

actually looks a pale shade of green) But

whatever doesn’t kill you will only make you

stronger..... at least that’s what they say.

AFTER

How do you think it went?

I’m still shaking! It was like living out my

worst nightmare, step by step but at the

same time it was quite exhilarating and I feel

like it was personal achievement finishing

the course as opposed to backing out. I

wanted to back out at every point but I

didn’t and I’m pleased I got round.

Harrington Utd Est: 2002MANAGER : JONO MARVIN

Formed by Ian Walton in 2002, the team comprised of a group of spotty 18 year olds who had enjoyed successful times in the Bournemouth Youth League. One of the most gifted players at the time Mark ‘Harry’ Harrington was involved in a serious car accident which sadly resulted in him being confined to a wheelchair.

Harrington United was formed in Mark’s honour and the ‘Mighty Harries’ entered Bournemouth Division 5. Over the years they gained promotion to Div 1 and also reached the odd cup final. We sadly lost Phil Saunders and Stu Stone in recent years. They are both greatly missed by the team.

The current managerial team of Jono Marvin and ‘Grey R Murray’ has been in place for three years but they could face the sack at the end of this season!! We should be known as the ‘nearly men of the Bournemouth league’, we always seem to miss out but will never give up on our dream of taking Harrington United FC to the Premier League…

The Clown – who keeps team spirits high? Fred Murray, always up for a laugh but the most comical things about him is his pants; some of the pants this guy wears would take your breath away. I think he personally keeps Primark’s £1 pants bins in business…always good for a laugh in the changing room.

Best Tekkers – who has the skills to pay the bills? We are lucky enough to have many skilful footballers. Fred Murray, Jimmy Rowley and Ryan Toms to name just a few but the guy that stands out for the ‘Mighty Harries’ would have to be Gavin ‘Sicknote’ Haynes. This is shown is a recent You Tube video. He shows some great skills whilst helping city kids in a ‘local police

in the Community’ programme. Check it out on You Tube - Dorset Police Officer on ‘Street Soccer Challenge’. Tekkers sicknote!

The Cheat – who loves a dive? Well that’s an easy one, Club Captain Sean Read. He doesn’t dive to cheat but he does go down very easily, you always know if he is really injured though…if he screams out in pain, there’s nothing wrong with him, he’s just lost the ball and fallen over hoping to get a free kick. Top lad but a big girl!

The lightweight – who’s first to let the side down? This season many have let us down but the guy who is never around when you need him is Chris ‘Nose’ Walton, he pays for a tracksuit, gets a squad number and shirt at the start of the season (extra small shirt, as he’s a bit of a pretty boy) but very rarely plays.

Mr Vain – who absolutely rates themselves? Unfortunately, we have a squad full of vain wannabees. They all like to take care of themselves, dress to impress and talk about how well they played.

Biggest liability on and off the pitch? Oliver Barnes, our fantastic centre half…if he had a brain he’d be dangerous. If he’s not moaning at our players he’s fighting theirs, he was top of one of the league statistics lists last season…worst discipline. Trying to stop him drinking on a Friday night has been my biggest problem, he seems happy just paying the fine every week for going out the night before a game.

Worst Dress Sense – Who needs to update their threads? We have many very dodgy looking team members, tight tops, very skinny jeans, coloured trousers and some very interesting footwear but if I had to name one in particular I would have to say Chris ‘Nose’ Walton again, he always looks like he got dressed in the dark.

Biggest Bottle Job – Who always ducks out of a tackle? We used to have a player called Nathan Hunt, unfortunately he no longer plays for us but Nathan was a fantastic footballer and a great lad to have around the place but not sure I ever saw him make a tackle. As he has left I would say we don’t really have any bottlers. We all like a tackle which is great.

The team social spot – Where is your designated club house on a Saturday Night? We go back to ‘The Brit’ after every game where they put on some amazing food. Many of our players like a drink so team nights out are always full of adventure, best thing is our Assistant Manager, John ‘Grey R Murray’ being, shall we say in his twilight years and finishing off as the most drunk and the last one home. What an absolute legend.

Who’s the longest in the shower? Well that’s a very easy one…Rimmel Williams, magnificent. It could however be Matty Saunders but he’s never had a shower after football so he could be the longest in the shower but no one knows.

Super Fletch UpdateAt the time of writing we are now ten games unbeaten in all the competitions, and we are absolutely flying as a squad.

There is something special when a team goes into a match feeling as if they cannot be beaten, that is the mindset that you need to instil and harness if you want a successful team.

But the facts are there - we are just making up for lost time. It doesn’t matter how good our form is, the cold, hard truth is that we are playing catch up in this division.

We didn’t have a great start to the season, and we didn’t get points on the board, so even though we are the in-form team in npower League 1 we still have a mountain to climb. This means we cannot afford to be complacent. As a squad we may be flying and looking forward to every challenge that comes our way, but we must first concentrate on being solid; not conceding goals, playing the right way, and then the rest will come.

The festive period is upon us and the flurry of games around Christmas can make or break a teams’ season. Let’s hope we can give the supporters a well deserved present this year and come out the other side near the top of this division, and ready for the second half of the season.
