Nikiana Lambert (6 Orange):

‘I feel like the library is the most

comfortable and cosy place in our

school, filled with uplifting posters

and decorations that always

make you feel at home. The new

furniture additions make up the

perfect relaxed reading area one

would expect to find at a school!

The library is also a place where

I’ve bonded with my friends and

made new friendships with the

people visiting! ’

Katerina Kaloutsou (6 Blue):

‘I find the library very

important since it holds

c o u n t l e s s i n t e r e s t i n g

information from books

varying from encyclopaedias

to novels. I can always rely on

the library to find some peace

so that I can concentrate and

study. My favourite part about

the library is the events

organised there such as the

Halloween movie party we

had. ’

by Efthymia Stavridou of ‘6Orange’

If we need a place to concentrate, study,

research information on the internet and enlarge our knowledge

through a variety of books, the school library is the most adequate choice!

A great number of students visit the library every day to collect information about their essays

and tests and they even stay after school to take advantage of the numerous books the library

provides on each topic.

Here are several students’ opinions

about the importance of the library in our school:

Loukis Menelaou (6 Blue):

‘The environment of our

library is very welcoming

and friendly which makes it

very pleasant for me to

work there. The numerous

resources available ranging

from the text books for

every subject to computers

with internet access allow

me to do my research and

dedicate some time for my

studies in an area where I

can focus. ’

NEW LIBRARY CORNER THE READING CORNER !!!

Undoubtedly, what teachers say

to students of all ages, that a

book is a door leading you to a

new world and a new experience,

is true! And there is an

explanation behind this: let's

assume that you have never

been to the USA and you win a

trip to New York City for 5 days.

When is that, that will get you to

actually know New York? And the answer is your senses! You will witness the

breath-taking view with all the NYC lights, you will hear the sounds, taste the NYC

food, smell, touch things. However, this really costly trip can be replaced by a

book, since a skilled writer can activate your senses in a way you will get to feel

NYC almost to the extent he would feel it if he was there.

Of course, even in that occasion when you have not visited New York without

physically being there, a book can surely borrow some magic from NYC and offer

it to you!

Our school's library made the innovation to give us some magic by creating the

Reading Corner, a really cosy corner within the library, that you definitely need to

visit !!!

Book Review by Aikaterini Krasha, of ‘2 Blue’

The book thief is the story of a small girl, Liesel,

(during World War II) who was sent away from her

mother with her brother, who died on the trip there.

During his funeral, a book was accidentally

dropped by someone… never to be found again

due to the thieving of Liesel, and that's how her

book-thieving "career" started. Meanwhile, this

story is being narrated by Death, who is not quite

what we imagined him to be. He became interested

in Liesel, especially after reading her diary. But

back to her story. She is just getting used to her

new home, her best friend Rudy, her loud mama

and "best in the whole world" papa...

When tragedy strikes and the sirens start their

"song of death" a little too late, Liesel is left as the

only survivor in the town.

It is a very fascinating story, and helps the reader understand a little more about how it was during WW2, as well as be less afraid of death.

The literature prize of the European Union 2014

Makis Tsitas was honored for his novel

"Μάρτυς μου ο Θεός" (God Be My Witness)

released in 2013 by Editions Κίχλη (Thrush).

The announcement for the awards, which are

bestowed to the best young and emerging

authors in Europe, was made during the

International Book Fair in Frankfurt

Wednesday, October 8th, and gave Greeks a breath of hope, as

people can still create, even while living in the midst of an economic

crisis.

As stated by Mrs. Vassiliou, the European Union Commissioner responsible for Education, Culture,

Multilingualism and Youth, "the awards recognize the best young and emerging writers in Europe,

regardless of their country of origin or their language. They are intended to draw attention to the top

writers of Europe’s modern literature, encourage cross-border sales and promote the translation,

publication and reading of literary works from other countries".

The new EU program entitled "Creative Europe" grants financial support to translation projects,

helping writers to attract readers beyond their national and linguistic borders.

Each winner receives a cash prize of 5,000 euros. However, what is important is the additional

International projection they gain. The publishers are encouraged to apply for funding from the EU,

in order for the prize-winning works to be translated into other languages, thus accessing new

markets.

School's out for summer, which means we can finally put

down those textbooks and

indulge in a fun read.

Summer Reads

The Summer I Turned Pretty:The Summer I Turned Pretty:The Summer I Turned Pretty:

Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything

magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters

are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place

away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most

importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys

that Belly has known since her very first summer--they have been

her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one

summer, one terrible and wonderful summer, the more everything

changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all

along.

The Maze Runner:The Maze Runner:The Maze Runner:

If you ain’t scared, you ain’t human.

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can

remember is his name. He’s surrounded by strangers—boys

whose memories are also gone.

Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limit-

less, ever-changing maze. It’s the only way out—and no one’s

ever made it through alive.

Everything is going to change.

Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she

delivers is terrifying.

Remember. Survive. Run.Remember. Survive. Run.Remember. Survive. Run.

Past Events

Every day can be a movie day, so why not enjoy the movies you like at the comfort of

your school library? During the LIBRARY WEEK, which took place on the first week of

March, a series of our most beloved movies were projected and everyone was invit-

ed to join in! The week’s kickstart movie was “Maleficent”, a fantasy movie based on

the famous story of Sleeping Beauty, but told from the villain’s perspective.

“Maleficent”, has won our hearts because it is not only about hate, it is rather mostly

about love and the jealousy that comes with it. Besides, it is a Disney movie, and

everyone has got to love Disney movies!

Page 9: The G C School - The G C School - Library News · 2019-09-23 · Book Review by Aikaterini Krasha, of ‘2 Blue’ The book thief is the story of a small girl, Liesel, (during World

Following that was “Taken 2”, which after the success of “Taken”, follows the story of a couple

who are kidnapped and held as hostages by the father of one of the kidnappers which were

killed during the rescue in “Taken”.

On Wednesday, we watched “Despicable Me 2”, which is the sequel of “Despicable Me”. In this

adventure of Gru, the minions and his fostered girls, they are in search of a new villain who

was thought all along to be dead and in their quest some are lucky enough to have found true

love.

Next on the list is the “Iron Lady”, a fantastic movie which illustrates the entire life of Margaret

Thatcher, brought to life after the death of her husband. In short, the spectator is following her

life from girlhood to becoming Britain’s Prime Minister as she becomes entangled in the webs

of her past.

Last but not least was “Megamind”, a fantasy movie in which after the destruction of a hero, the

villain prevails but soon becomes bored of the mundane world which he now lives in, so he

strives to create a new hero which he will secretly train and hope to later destroy. But what

happens when the hero becomes the villain and the villain is forced to become the hero? In

hope that the movie week will attract students, the Head Librarian has organized a book fair,

provided by Philippides Paperworks, in an attempt to promote the act of reading and most

importantly enjoying a good book. Last but not least, the highlight of the event was probably the

official announcement of the “Poster Design Competition” in which the winner was

congratulated and received her reward. So, what’s to lose?

P A G E 9

2nd of April of 2015, Aikaterini Krasha of ‘2Orange’received

the prize of €100, for having won the ‘Library Poster Design

Competition’.
