Thermal recycling
- Applicable for meltable synthetic fibers
- Non-applicable for natural fibers, PAN, PVA, Aramids
- Fibers are melted into processable polymer liquid, which is used for extrusion or spinning of lower value products,
- Such as; plastic plates, packaging boxes,
oil protection bars, buckets. pipes
- Applicable for all fibers: the only existing technology for cotton - Cutting and shredding machinery necessary for defibration - Cutting/Shredding Carding Bonding Yarn spinning Nonwovens Weaving
Mechanical recycling
Possible utilization of recycled fibers
• Nonwovens: – Thermal insulation materials

Chemical recycling
• Applicable for synthetic fibers, mainly PET
• Fibers are transformed back to original • monomers by using chemical reactions • polymers are synthetized again from • same monomers
• - Methods for PET: glycolyse and
methanolyse
Chemical Recycling of Cotton
• Cotton has been recycled up to now by mechanical methods
• In textiles, the polymerization degree depends on chemical
modification (pretreatment, bleaching, dyeing, finishing) during
manufacturing and degradation during end-using
• In some articles with minimum modification and less degradation, the
DP can remain quite high – suitable for the raw material for
regenerated fibers
• Scientists at Stockholm's Royal Institute of Technology have
developed a way of recreating cotton (Renewcell)
• A group of Swedish companies (e.g. H&M) presented the world's first
garment made entirely from recycled cotton and the scalability of this
process looks promising • Cotton clothes are shredded turned onto a slurry and non-recyclable pieces
are removed, followed by the creation of molecular solution • The cellulose in the solution is regenerated in rayon yarn by using spinning
technology

• The production of polyester fibers accounts for about 50-55% of total
global annual fiber production
• Polyester is made from petroleum-based chemicals; its raw material
is crude oil
• Polyester production involves numerous processes, for creating the
polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer, which is then extruded
and spun into polyester fibers
• Polyester production is energy-intensive and relies on a finite, non-
renewable natural resource that is utilized in many other ways as
part of everyday life for energy, fuel, and plastics production
• About 65-70 percent of global polyester production is used for
textiles, of which more than 65 percent is produced in China
• The majority of the remaining 25-30 percent is used in the
manufacture of PET beverage bottles.

Chemical recycling of PET Long-term properties
• An invention relates to a process for treating polyamide-containing carpet waste by extracting the polyamide 6 and polyamide 6.6. from the carpet waste with an extraction agent containing an aliphatic alcohol (methanol) and water
• For PA 6 the extraction process is carried out in higher temperature 100 ºC – 150 ºC and for PA 6.6 at 140 ºC – 180 ºC
• The separated polyamide can then be recovered from the extract and recycled for further use
• Carpet waste containing two polyamides can be treated in accordance with the present invention so as to separately recover each polyamide.
• The process according to the present invention provides a high yield of the polyamide.
• The presence of other constituents normally present in carpets does not interfere with the separating and recycling of the polyamide
• After the extraction the polymer is precipitated, dried and used for further applications

• Recycled PA 6 cloth can be used as the only raw material to
prepare single polymer composites (SPC) by partially melting the
PA6 fibers
• During the process, part of PA6 fibers is melted to fill the gap
between the remained fibers at a temperature in the melting
temperature range of fibers
• The matrix was in situ formed by recrystallization of the molten
part and bonded the remained unmolten fibers together with
cooling. Critical parameter is the processing temperature (222–
228°C), on the partially melting behavior of PA6 fibers
• According (DSC) and (SEM), and tensile tests, the processing
temperature of 226°C, 31% of PA6 fibers were exactly molt to
form the matrix
• Tensile strength of prepared SPC achieved a maximal value of
138 MPa that was 105% higher than the one of neat PA6

• The chemical reutilization of polyamide 6 containing carpets for ϵ-
caprolactam recovery offers some economic benefit and is performed
on a technical scale with the help of the Zimmer-process.
• By this process polyamide 6 is depolymerized with steam and
phosphoric acid.
• An alternative to this process is the thermal depolymerization –
catalyzed or non-catalyzed.
• The kinetic parameters of the thermal depolymerization of polyamide 6,
the thermal depolymerization in presence of sodium/potassium
hydoxide, and the thermal depolymerization in presence of phosphoric
acid are alternatives
• Based on the kinetics of the catalyzed or non-catalyzed
depolymerization a stepwise pyrolysis procedure is designed by which
the formation of ϵ-caprolactam from polyamide 6 can be separated
from the formation of other pyrolysis products.

• Carpet waste disposed of in landfills each year in the U.S. is about 2-3 million tons and
about 4-6 million tons per year worldwide.
• Carpet waste for soil and concrete reinforcement requires only a simple and
inexpensive shredding process.
• For soil applications sorting is not necessary.
• For concrete reinforcement, only PA and polypropylene carpet should be used.
• It is also possible to mechanically remove PA face fibers from a nylon carpet to
produce PA resins and use the less-valuable polypropylene backing for concrete and
soil reinforcement.
• Studies on the properties of fiber reinforced concrete with carpet waste fibers have shown
that waste fiber reinforcement can effectively improve the shatter resistance, toughness,
and ductility of concrete.
• The use of low-cost waste fiber for concrete reinforcement could lead to improved
durability and reliability pavements, columns, bridge decks and barriers, and for airport
construction as runways and taxiways.
• The use of carpet waste for soil reinforcement is shown to increase the triaxial
compressive strength and ductility of soil.
• Field trials show that shredded carpet waste fibers (to 70 mm long) can be blended into
soil with conventional equipment. The availability of low cost fibers from carpet waste
could lead to wider use of fiber reinforced soil and more cost-effective construction.

Mechanical recycling of PP
Low Price recycled polypropylene is available in markets such as recycled fiber,
recycled polypropylene granules, high tenacity anti-crack recycled polypropylene
fiber, recycled 7dx32mm polypropylene hollow fiber, nonwoven recycled
polypropylene fiber and toy raw material recycled polypropylene staple fiber
The mechanical properties of PP tensile strength, Young`s modulus and melt flow
index were compared with the recycled ones during recycled 14 th times in order
The test specimen was a dog bone, for the testometric machine in order to find
out the tensile strength and young`s modulus, and recycled granulates, for
the melt flow index machine in order to find out the melt flow index.
The material was recycled by using a plastic shredding machine and the dog
bones were created with an injection molding machine.
The recycling and testing part was done in the plastic laboratory located in
Arcada - University of Applied Sciences. The school, Arcada in this case,
provided the material used and the machines to perform the tests with.
