Cloud Computing is the solution

What can be done?

Defining Cloud Computing

Cloud metaphor for Internet – add computing

Many Cloud Computing definitions- differing opinions

- one thing in common – Services provided via the Internet

A Definition:

Cloud computing encompasses any subscription-based or pay-per-use service that is offered in real time over the Internet

Page 11: The Future of Technology Presented by: Saurabh Jain saurabh.jain@icsi.edu / +91-11-45341035 Cloud Computing

Page 11

Cloud Computing Model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access

to a shared pool of configurable computing resources like networks, server storage applications, and services that can be rapidly acquired, used and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

Cloud Computing customers do not own the physical infrastructure rather they rent the usage from third party provider.

They consume resources as a service and pay only for resources that they use.

Sharing resources improves the speed of computing when the servers are unnecessarily left idle.

If yes, How ?

Do you make use of Cloud computing?

Service Models of Cloud computing

Page 17: The Future of Technology Presented by: Saurabh Jain saurabh.jain@icsi.edu / +91-11-45341035 Cloud Computing

Page 17

Complete application is offered to the customer, as a service on demand

Single instance of the service runs on the cloud and multiple end users are serviced

On the customers’ side, there is no need for upfront investment in servers or software licenses, thereby reducing costs

Software as a Service (SaaS)

Page 18: The Future of Technology Presented by: Saurabh Jain saurabh.jain@icsi.edu / +91-11-45341035 Cloud Computing

Page 18

A layer of software, or development environment is encapsulated & offered as a service, upon which other higher levels of service can be built

Customer has freedom to build his own applications which run on the provider’s infrastructure

PaaS providers offer a predefined combination of OS and application servers to meet manageability and scalability requirements of applications

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Page 19: The Future of Technology Presented by: Saurabh Jain saurabh.jain@icsi.edu / +91-11-45341035 Cloud Computing

Page 19

Provides basic storage and computing capabilities as standardized services over the network

Servers, storage systems, networking equipment, data centre space etc. are pooled and made available to handle workloads

Customer free to deploy own software on the infrastructure

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

Private Cloud: Cloud infrastructure deployed, maintained and operated for a specific organization.

Cloud deployment models

Community Cloud: Cloud infrastructure shared among a number of organizations with similar interests and requirements. Helps limit Capital expenditure as establishment costs are shared among the organizations.

.. contd.

Cloud deployment models

Public Cloud: Cloud infrastructure available to public on a commercial basis by a cloud service provider.Enables a consumer to develop and deploy a service in the cloud with very little financial outlay compared to the capital

Hybrid Cloud: Cloud infrastructure consists of a number of clouds of any type.Clouds have ability through their interfaces to allow data and / or applications to be moved from one cloud to another. Can be combination of private and public clouds that support the requirement to retain some data in an organization, and also the need to offer services in the cloud.

More secure

Challenge VHW Benefit

Theft • Virtual Workstations centralized

Roaming users and data loss

• Access centralized data• Data encrypted •Restrict users downloading to USB, CD and DVD drives from home, hotel and laptops

Unauthorized access to sensitive data

• Physical access to data restricted as it resides in a secure data centre

• Access to sensitive data restricted through enforcement of permissions

Users unsecurely connecting to data

• Complex password authentication

Management and Support

Challenge VHW Benefit

Manage and support multiple end user devices complex and time consuming

• Manage and support standard VD in data centre much simpler and more efficient

Mix of Operating Systems: 2000, XP Pro, Vista …

• Standardization on all VD

Different software versions

• Create one standard VD image with all applications preloaded e.g.:

Office, Adobe Reader, QuickBooks, Simply Acct etc.

• Users more productive Time consuming to perform patch management and security updates

• Centralized management and support of VD

Long wait time to resolve user issues

• Self healing - most issues can be resolved by logging off\on VD – takes less than 5 minutes

Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery

Challenge VHW Benefit

Back up failure • Test restores performed

• Data backed up every 4hrs\ day \ week \ month \ year

Data loss due to:

• user error

• corruption

• hard drive failure

• Quickly able to recover data therefore limiting downtime and lost productivity

Distaster strikes and business continuity

• Quick and cost effective

• Data backed up and stored on multiple devices

• Devices stored in multiple locations

Hardware and Licensing

Challenge VHW Benefit

Purchasing hardware and licensing every 4 years – expensive

• Never purchase hardware and licensing again

• Lead time for hardware instant

Obsolesence• Never worry about upgading to the latest

hardware\software version again Upgrade RAM and hard drives inefficient

• Very quickly add more RAM and hard drive space on the fly

Space issue • Frees up space on users desk

Noise and heat • Thin clients has significantly less noise and heat

Heavy laptop• Do not have to carry heavy laptop around –

access anywhere, anytime

Green benefits of Cloud Computing

Servers

Virtualize therefore reduce # servers e.g. 5 to 10 virtual servers to 1 physical server

Less space required Reduced power

Workstations Thin clients and hence reduced power – 8watts compared to 80watts Virtual workstations running on servers – 30 to 70 wks to 1 server

IT Support Workstations that are not used are switched off Maintenance performed real time

Environmental Lower carbon emissions – less power needed Recycle / reuse old equipment
