INTRODUCTION

Are you spending enough time thinking about the world’s largest English speaking population?

In a future that promises continued disruption, India will be one of the world’s greatest influence economies. Accessing the country’s potential requires a dose of pragmatism along with a bit of imagination. It is, after all, a land of endless untapped possibilities:

■ Over 800 million mobile phone users with an unprecedented increase in smart phone users due to 4G

■ The largest growth of television channels witnessed in the history of media and entertainment

■ One of the fastest growing markets for social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

■ A more open and forward-thinking political and investment climate than ever before

You probably spend a lot of time thinking about China. Transformers earned more than $300M at the box office in China just a month back. The country is opening more screens per year than Bollywood films are being released – that’s quite a feat! The type of convergence between media and technology witnessed in the US is becoming ubiquitous in China as well. If you’re involved in entertainment without a China focus, you’re behind the curve.

There are a lot of reasons why you probably don’t think too much about India. For one, Transformers didn’t even come close to crossing $20M in India. In fact, Hollywood’s share of the Indian box office is less than 15% and with average ticket prices in India well under $1 per ticket, it’s not surprising that most executives put India strategy as one of their “long term strategic objectives”.

India is more relevant today in the global M&E ecosystem than perhaps any other country on the planet, but will require new thinking to make better bets and realize that potential.

We are bringing together business and thought leaders from the M&E industry for a day of discussion, ideation and innovation. We hope, with our collective imaginations, we can glimpse into the future.

Together, we will discuss opportunities that the M&E industry in India has to offer to the world. We’ll pair this along with several substantive topics – from business to talent to tax and regulation – from an Indo-US lens.

The schedule provided below is simply a framework and guide for our discussion. We look forward to your partnership to engage in a collaborative conversation. We know the sessions below cannot be completely exhaustive so we’ll be sure to address as many of your “hot topics” as possible!

Television is no longer limited to linear story telling as many of today’s formats embrace social media and retail therapy.

Jason Blum

FOUNDER & CEO, BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS

Jason Blum is the Founder and CEO of Blumhouse Productions, a multi-media production company that has pioneered a new model of studio filmmaking- producing high-quality micro-budget films for wide release. Since its launch in 2000, Blumhouse has produced more than 30 feature films including the highly-profitable Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge and Sinister franchises. Eight of Blumhouse’s recent films have grossed a combined $1 billion at the worldwide box-office on budgets under $5 million.

Blumhouse’s The Purge, its first production under its first-look deal with Universal Pictures, opened to more than $34 million on its opening weekend with a budget of just $3 million. Insidious: Chapter Two from FilmDistrict, grossed over $40 million on its opening weekend with just a $5 million budget.

Page 19: The Future of Media and · PDF fileWhy are the best stories and story tellers gravitating ... Anjula Acharia-Bath is an entrepreneur, ... most prominent attorneys assisting top Indian

19

Blum’s model began with the original Paranormal Activity, which was made for $15,000, released by Paramount Pictures, and grossed close to $200 million worldwide, making it the most profitable film in the history of Hollywood. Blumhouse also produced the phenomenally successful sequels Paranormal Activity 2, Paranormal Activity 3 and Paranormal Activity 4.

Blumhouse’s upcoming micro-budget wide releases include Jessabelle for Lionsgate, The Purge: Anarchy and Ouija for Universal and Paranormal Activity 5 for Paramount. For Halloween 2012, Blumhouse built The Blumhouse of Horrors, an innovative and frightening haunted house experience in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. Blumhouse’s Los Angeles-based movie production team used its expertise in horror film production, storytelling, and movie set design to transform the Variety Arts Theater into a fully-immersive and chillingly intense Halloween attraction. In 2013, Blumhouse invited horror fans to experience The Purge: Fear the Night, a live-event inspired by the backstory to the feature film.

RESEARCH@NDA

Research is the DNA of NDA. In early 1980s, our firm emerged from an extensive, and then pioneering, research by Nishith M. Desai on the taxation of cross-border transactions. The research book written by him provided the foundation for our international tax practice. Since then, we have relied upon research to be the cornerstone of our practice development. Today, research is fully ingrained in the firm’s culture.

Research has offered us the way to create thought leadership in various areas of law and public policy. Through research, we discover new thinking, approaches, skills, reflections on jurisprudence, and ultimately deliver superior value to our clients.

Over the years, we have produced some outstanding research papers, reports and articles. Almost on a daily basis, we analyze and offer our perspective on latest legal developments through our “Hotlines”. These Hotlines provide immediate awareness and quick reference, and have been eagerly received. We also provide expanded commentary on issues through detailed articles for publication in newspapers and periodicals for dissemination to wider audience. Our NDA Insights dissect and analyze a published, distinctive legal transaction using multiple lenses and offer various perspectives, including some even overlooked by the executors of the transaction. We regularly write extensive research papers and disseminate them through our website. Although we invest heavily in terms of associates’ time and expenses in our research activities, we are happy to provide unlimited access to our research to our clients and the community for greater good.

Our research has also contributed to public policy discourse, helped state and central governments in drafting statutes, and provided regulators with a much needed comparative base for rule making. Our ThinkTank discourses on Taxation of eCommerce, Arbitration, and Direct Tax Code have been widely acknowledged.

As we continue to grow through our research-based approach, we are now in the second phase of establishing a four-acre, state-of-the-art research center, just a 45-minute ferry ride from Mumbai but in the middle of verdant hills of reclusive Alibaug-Raigadh district. The center will become the hub for research activities involving our own associates as well as legal and tax researchers from world over. It will also provide the platform to internationally renowned professionals to share their expertise and experience with our associates and select clients.

We would love to hear from you about any suggestions you may have on our research reports. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected]
