“Night Sky”

The image is from my imagination, as if I am lying down on the ground looking up at the atmosphere –

amazing, all the stars going around.

You can also see the river and the trees with the moon light shining on the water, it makes me feel

relaxed, providing a real sense of peace and calm.

If you are interested in Samantha’s art or you would like to find out more or information on art

programs, check out pages 15 – 18 or contact Peta Mitchell on 3139 3205 or email

We will look at the general management of diabetes, healthy lifestyle recommendations and who you can go to for assistance and support in managing the condition.

The Mental Health Volunteer Program has been an essential part of the service and well over 120 people have been part of the program since its inception in 2005.

Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds. For example, people with a lived experience, carers, professional students, and people who just want to help.

Volunteers are invited to be involved in many areas within the service primarily the Acute Inpatient

Units, the Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Units, and the Community Care Units. Volunteers visit

usually once or twice a week for a few hours, helping around the facilities, offering support and

companionship to consumers of the service.

To become a volunteer, you need to contact the above number or email for an application. Once we

receive your application we then contact you to organise an interview. If you are successful you are

then placed on a list for the next Volunteer orientation day. Once this is completed you can start.

We generally have two to three orientation days a year depending on demand.

The Cadence Research Team is looking for better treatments for people with psychosis. We want sustained recovery for everyone who experiences serious mental illness, with no harmful side effects.

Cadence CoMET (metformin)

We are looking for volunteers to determine if receiving metformin medication on initiation of clozapine treatment assists with minimising weight gain in people who experience schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.

Metformin is commonly used in the management of diabetes and has been shown to assist with mild weight loss in people without diabetes.

The trial is a randomised placebo-controlled trial. The term randomised indicates that you will be selected into either the metformin or placebo group completely by chance. A placebo is a medication with no active ingredients. It looks like the real thing but is not. This clinical trial will randomise participants in a 1:1 design, which means there is an equal chance of being in either the metformin or the placebo group.

Study details:

• 24-week double blind clinical trial

• Physical health measures and assessment of adverse drug reactions will be conducted weekly for the first 4 weeks whilst titration of trial medication occurs and then monthly for duration of trial

Problem Management Plus Group Program

Date Time Venue

August, weekly sessions for 7 sessions

1:00pm- 2:30pm TBA- North Brisbane Location

PM+ is a program designed by the World Health Organization (WHO) for individuals 18+ from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

PM+ is a brief and free low-intensity psychological intervention. It’s called ‘problem management’ because the program uses problem solving counselling or problem-solving therapy and includes other behavioural strategies too. The program aims to address both psychological problems such as stress, fear, feelings of helplessness, loneliness, and where possible, practical problems such as financial stress, family conflict, visa concerns, and health issues.

The program uses cultural support workers (individuals who may come from the same country/ethnic group as the participant) who are also trained in the WHO PM+ program. Participants can pick up to three concerns and, with the support and guidance of the trained peer support worker, learn and identify strategies to solve and manage the issues. This will equip the participant with new tools and techniques to use if ever a new problem was to arise in the future after PM+ involvement, such as learning deep breathing for relaxation.

Stepping On is an evidence-based falls prevention group program designed for adults aged 65+ with a severe and enduring mental health concern who have experienced a fall or are concerned about falling. Stepping On is a seven-week program developed by Occupational Therapists that aims to address the major risk factors for falls and support older adults to improve their self-efficacy, explore different coping strategies and encourage behavioural change to reduce their risk of falls. The program is designed to challenge individuals to realistically appraise their falls risk and provide a forum for developing knowledge of safety practices.

The program incorporates exercise and education to reduce falls and fear of falling as well as improving quality of life and daily functioning for consumers. It uses a set of 6 practical exercises specifically designed to improve strength and balance and covers a range of falls education topics including home and environmental hazards, vision, medications, community safety, bone health and footwear.

The Stepping On program follows a closed group format in which participants attend a 2-hour session each week for a period of 7 weeks. There is also a post-completion phone call or home visit and a two-month booster session.

North Brisbane Partners in Recovery

Working together to make things better

North Brisbane Partners in Recovery (PiR) works with adults who have long-term, severe problems

with their mental health. To get help from us, people need to:

• have a mental illness that is severe and persistent

• have multiple and complex needs that require support from more than one service

• require assistance to get the help they need from these support services

• have no coordination of support services in place (or these coordination arrangements are not working)

• want to work with us to make things better, and

• live in the North Brisbane, Moreton and Somerset area. We help people to get the support they need to get their lives back on track.

Working together – with people

At North Brisbane Partners in Recovery, we work alongside people to help them get the support they

need. Our PiR Coordinators help people to:

• plan and work towards recovery

• find the right places to get help

• make sure that different services meet their needs

• coordinate different services

• solve practical problems – like housing and health needs

• keep working towards recovery. Working together – with support services

At North Brisbane Partners in Recovery, we work with support services to help them meet the needs

of people who have persistent mental health problems. We help services to:

• understand the needs of people who have complex needs

• know the various support services available in the region

• liaise with other support services to fully meet the needs of participants

• improve the services that are available in the local community. We help different support services to work together so that people with complex needs don’t fall through the gaps. Getting support from Partners in Recovery

If you or someone you know may benefit from our support, please phone us on 1800 752 235. You’ll

be able to talk directly to one of our PiR Coordinators. We will ask some simple questions to help us

understand whether we can help. No GP or other formal referral is required. You can also make an
