READINGS FOR THE WEEK July 30 - Aug 3

Beginning today, the church gives us ive weeks of Sunday gospel readings from John. It’s as though we are taking a break from Mark to hear from another evangelist. Throughout these ive weeks we will be reading from John chapter 6, wherein we have the multiplication of the loaves followed by Jesus’ walking on water, and the bread of life discourse. The theology and symbolism in John 6 is profound and has inspired centuries of contemplation and rich exegesis. We remember that the story of the multiplication of loaves is told in each of the four gospels, the only miracle

story shared by each. Last week we heard Mark’s setup to the feeding of the ive thousand, but this week we hear John’s version rather than Mark’s. The two stories have many similarities: two hundred denarii, ive loaves and two ish, the crowd numbering ive thousand men, and twelve baskets of leftovers, to name a few. But there are some differences to the stories as well. John’s theology is ultimately Christology. John has an intense focus on Jesus. In Mark’s version of the multiplication of the loaves, the disciples come to Jesus with their concern about moving the people along before they have to feed them. In John, Jesus takes the initiative in asking Philip about feeding the people. And there is something equivalent to an editorial note saying that Jesus asked this question only to test him. Again, John’s gospel shows Jesus clearly in charge, clearly taking the lead, clearly in the driver’s seat. Even when he asks a question it is merely to test someone. The Eucharistic overtones so prominent in Mark are also present in John but in a different way. Rather than for four key verbs used by Mark, John uses a Greek term for the fragments (Klasmata) that were collected and gathered into the baskets. This Greek term is used by the Didache(an early church book written in the irst century, parts of which are akin to a catechism) to speak of Eucharist. Finally, upon witnessing this sign of the multiplication of the loaves, the crowd explicitly recognizes Jesus as a prophet. No doubt the story of the prophet Elisha and the multiplication of the loaves from today’s First Reading was in mind. Jesus realized the crowd wanted to make him a king, so he makes a speedy solo exit. The multiplication of the loaves, with its Eucharistic overtones, its prominence on Jesus and his ful illing human needs, and the growing recognition by the crowds that he must be a prophet demonstrate how pivotal this episode was and continues to be.

WEEKLY MIRACLE This week marks the beginning of a kind of “liturgical detour.” We have been listening to Saint Mark’s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John’s Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and ishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord’s statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the “bread of life.” Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements—bread and wine—into the Lord’s Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing. © J.S. Saint Louis High School Apostolic Service Hours Program

Helping SMdP and Teaching Service Luke Ledet, sophomore, (parents Regina and Scott Ledet) and Grif in Gibson, junior, (parents Traci and JJ Gibson) lent a helping hand this week at SMdP. These two young men pulled weeds, trimmed hedges and much more. SLCH requires all students to put in between 10-25 apostolic service hours a year, depending on grade level. SMdP gladly bene its from this worthy teaching program.

For such an overwhelming response to our Adopt-A-Child School Program. Through your generosity we were able to help 8 families children this year. DebbieStewart Thank You...Thank You!

Demand for food donations from Catholic Charities (CC) has grown - they need our help. Catholic Charities has asked our parish to help in collecting 280 jars of peanut butter a month. SMdP parish has designated the 2nd Sunday of every month as “Peanut Butter Sunday”. The next Monday the peanut butter collection will be delivered to CC by our KC group.

Thank You Richard Triche Your Cabinet Donation is a Blessing Richard Triche donated his services, time and materials, to build a beautiful new cabinet (left) for the work sacristy area hallway. This new cabinet will store essential items for the Mass and also be a prep area for funerals and many other sacramental services. Also, thank you to Chuck Kuehn and Southern Marble, who also donated the granite countertop for the cabinet project. This lasting donation will serve others for years to come.
