THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 20, 2020

Holy Eucharist – 10 AM

TTTTHE HE HE HE LLLLITURGY OF THE ITURGY OF THE ITURGY OF THE ITURGY OF THE WWWWORDORDORDORD

Prelude “Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland” arr. by Gregory Hamilton

“Shepherd’s Pipe Carol” by Dale Wood

After the prelude, a bell is rung three times. This ringing of the bell does not merely announce the start of the opening hymn; it is a call to quiet ourselves.

We hope you will take advantage of this invitation to be still.

Opening Acclamation and a Prayer for Light

The Celebrant says

Blessed are you, holy and living One. People You come to your people and set them free.

The Celebrant says a Prayer for Light.

Grant us, Lord, the lamp of charity which never fails, that it may burn in us and

shed its light on those around us; and that by its brightness we may have a vision of that holy City, where dwells the true and never-failing Light, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect of the Day

The Celebrant bids the assigned collect, saying

The Lord be with you. People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son

Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16

A lector reads the first reading from Scripture, first saying

A Reading from the Second Book of Samuel.

When the king was settled in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from

all his enemies around him, the king said to the prophet Nathan, "See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent." Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that you have in mind; for the LORD is with you."

But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan: Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the LORD:

Are you the one to build me a house to live in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"

Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the LORD of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies.

Page 5: The Fourth Sunday of Advent - trinitybend.org

5

Moreover the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be established forever.

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm – Canticle 15: The Song of Mary Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55)

The People sing the Psalm following what is known as “Simplified Anglican Chant.” Each half-verse of the Psalm is sung on the reciting note up to the last accented syllable (in bold print below). When there are an odd number of verses, the last verse repeats the final two bars.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; * for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed: * the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him * in every gener-ation.

He has shown the strength of his arm, * he has scattered the proud in their con-ceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, * and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel, * for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

The promise he made to our forebears, * to Abraham and his children for ever.

Second Reading – Romans 16:25-27

A lector reads the second reading from Scripture, first saying

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans.

Now to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the

proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith -- to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Amen.

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

Gospel Hymn “The angel Gabriel from heaven came” Hymnal 265

As the Gospel Book is brought forward, the following is sung.

Page 8: The Fourth Sunday of Advent - trinitybend.org

8

Gospel – Luke 1:26-38

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called

Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.

And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”

But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.

The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”

The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.”

Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”

Then the angel departed from her.

Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon – The Rev. Jed Holdorph

An Affirmation of Faith

The People say an Affirmation of Faith, adapted from Laughing Bird Liturgical Resources.

We believe in God, creator and lover of the earth, origin and destiny of us all.

We believe in Jesus the Christ – God coming to us in the fragile promise of a baby yet unborn –

who emerges as the herald of hope, God's laughter in the face of despair.

Plunged into death and hell, he broke free the captives,

and is leading the way to the land of promise, where justice and peace will flourish.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who implants the seed of truth,

brings us to birth as the body of Christ, and empowers us to confront and transform all that is corrupt, degrading and deceitful.

We believe in the coming reign of God. Announced by the Baptist,

it has drawn near to us in Jesus, and will be consummated in the glorious marriage of earth and heaven, when all who have passed through the world's deep sorrow will be gathered into the joyous fulfillment of God's desire.

As we work for the coming of that day, let us pray, Come, Lord Jesus, Come!

The Leader of the Prayers says the following words of introduction.

God of wonder and awe, as we watch for your signs in sun, moon and stars, we pray to you saying, “Come, Lord Jesus, Come!”

The Leader then continues

The people add their prayers for the church, silently or aloud.

The people add prayers of intercession and thanksgiving for the world, silently or aloud.

As we work for the coming day of our God, let us pray, People Come, Lord Jesus, Come!

For this community, that our love may grow with knowledge and insight as we discern the gifts and the challenges around us.

The people add their prayers for the local community, silently or aloud.

11

For those who have died. For the fullness of their joy in you, and their place in the company of heaven, that they too, may be present while we wait.

The people add their prayers for those who have died, silently or aloud.

As we work for the coming day of our God, let us pray, People Come, Lord Jesus, Come!

The Celebrant concludes with the following (or another suitable) collect.

Creator God, we praise you for your love in coming to us. Give us grace to accept the Christ who comes in your name, and the courage to be Christ for others. Amen.

The Exchange of the Peace BCP, p. 360

As able, all stand and prepare to greet one another in the Lord’s name, the Celebrant first saying

The peace of God be always with you. People And also with you.

Please greet any who may be near with a word of peace.

Birthday/Anniversary Blessings (along with other special prayers/announcements)

We offer prayers for members of the congregation who celebrate birthdays and/or anniversaries this week.

For birthdays:

Watch over your children, O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For anniversaries:

O gracious and everliving God, look mercifully on your servants. Grant them your blessing, and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor and keep their promises and vows; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

While the table is prepared, members of the congregation may make offerings of money. If you are able to support the ongoing life of this congregation, please continue to offer a check or use your credit card as you have in the past.

If you’d like, you may also make an online donation @ https://trinitybend.org/donations/.

We appreciate the generosity of the people of this congregation. Your financial support makes it possible for us to continue our essential ministries in these challenging times and your gifts ensure our vitality as we look ahead to the time when we will be able to gather together once more.

Once the table is prepared, the People sing the following, using the tune of Hymn 380.

Be present at our table, Lord: Be here and everywhere adored; These creatures bless; and grant that we may feast in fellowship with thee. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B BCP, p. 367

The People stand. The Celebrant, whether bishop or priest, faces them and says

The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Page 13: The Fourth Sunday of Advent - trinitybend.org

13

Celebrant and People

The Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Page 14: The Fourth Sunday of Advent - trinitybend.org

14

The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with [ and] all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

Lord’s Prayer

Presider As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name,

your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread BCP, p. 364

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept.

Then may be sung or said

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following or some other words of Invitation

The Gifts of God for the People of God.

and may add Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Communion Music “Mary’s Cradle Song” by Max Reger

Prayer after Communion

The ancient tradition of the Church reminds us that when it is impossible to be present at a celebration of the Eucharist, and to receive Holy Communion, the desire to be united with Christ (and the People of God) in the Sacrament is enough for God to grant all the spiritual benefits of Communion.

The presider invites the following prayer to be said by all:

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church where the Holy Eucharist is celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. And since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

(from A Prayer Book for the Armed Services)

Blessing of God’s People in Advent

The Celebrant offers a blessing, using a form specific to the season of Advent, saying

May Almighty God, by whose providence our Savior came among us, sanctify you with the light of his blessing and set you free.

People Amen.

Celebrant May the one whose second Coming in power and great glory we await, make you steadfast in faith, joyful in hope, and constant in love.

People Amen.

Celebrant May you who rejoice in the first Advent of our Redeemer, at his second Advent be rewarded with unending life.

People Amen.

Celebrant And the blessing of God Almighty, most holy, glorious, and undivided Trinity, be with you always.

People Amen.

Caroling begins at 5:45 pm, followed by the liturgy itself.

Both of the Christmas Eve celebrations will include lots of familiar Christmas carols.

Bilingual New Testaments available for Trinitarians Trinity’s Latino Opportunity Visioning (LOV) team is making a bilingual New Testament available. These NT's offer both languages in parallel columns, English from The Good News Bible and Spanish from Dios Habla Hoy. Both paraphrases are well-written and easy to read (reading difficulty like that of a newspaper).

Complement your daily reflections by seeing how texts could be expressed in Spanish -- a great way to learn the language! These New Testaments are available in the church office (free -- 1 per household -- or for a donation of $5-$6 to cover our cost if you wish). First come, first served! Please call the church office at 541 382-5542 to make sure they are available and someone is there to buzz you in.

Any questions? Contact Betsy Warriner at [email protected].
