May 5, 2011

On behalf of the people of Hawai‘i, I share a warm aloha to all of the racers, crews, families and spectators of the 2011 Race to Honolulu, the 46th sailing of the biennial Race to Honolulu. I applaud the Transpacific Yacht Club racers for their courage to embark on the 2,225 nautical mile journey to Honolulu, Hawai‘i from Los Angeles, California. As participants prepare for their journeys, I share a quote from Mau Piailug, a famous Micronesian navigator who was best known as a teacher of traditional, non-instrumental way finding methods of deep sea voyaging: “If you can read the ocean, you will never be lost.”

I commend the Transpacific Yacht Club Board of Directors for their hard work and dedication; their efforts have helped make this event a success. The Transpacific Yacht Club has perpetuated the oldest open ocean race in the world that began with the first race dating back to 1906. Again, mahalo to the Transpacific Yacht Club for hosting the 2011 Race to Honolulu. It is my hope that the travels of each of this event’s racers are safe and that their reunion in the Aloha State is memorable. I share with them my best wishes.

It gives me great pleasure to extend my warmest aloha to all participants in the 2011 Transpacific Yacht Race from the West Coast to Honolulu this summer.

We are honored to welcome the world-class sailors, navigators and yachtsmen who will cross the Pacific in this 46th Transpacific Yacht Race first conceived by King David Kalakaua in 1886. I salute the captains who have prepared their boats and crewmembers for the rigorous physical demands and team work required for this challenge conducted nearly every year since 1906.

Deepest appreciation goes to the event organizers and participants for the positive attention and significant revenue this event generates for the islands. The ongoing success of this competition is a tribute to the planners and organizational committees that have made this a world-class exhibition of sailing talent.

On behalf of the people of the City and County of Honolulu, I extend best wishes for another safe and successful race.

MEssAgE FROM MAYOR PETER B. CARLIsLE

Greeting Transpac Fans: As Mayor of Long Beach, it is once again my pleasure to extend a heartfelt welcome to all who come out to celebrate the Departure Festival for one of the world’s greatest sailing races - the 46th Biennial Transpacific Yacht Race. As the host city, Long Beach is proud to be able to create the Transpac Walk of Fame, recognizing all of the events winners over the past 100+ years. Initially, when these stunning memorials were unveiled for the start of the 2007 Transpac, it was then that everyone fully understood what an extreme honor it is to have the Crews and the Club calling the City of Long Beach their “home port” for a while. A special recognition is extended to all who have worked so diligently over the years to ensure the success of Transpac – particularly, our local Long Beach clubs – Shoreline and Long Beach Yacht Clubs, and also the Honolulu Committee and themembers of the Transpacific Yacht Club. On behalf of the citizens of Long Beach, I wish the skippers and crews of the 46th Biennial Transpacific Yacht Race, and all who come out to participate and support, a fun and safe journey to Hawaii, and ask you to send over a warm “Long Beach Aloha” to all our friends and neighbors in the City of Honolulu and the great State of Hawaii. Congratulations on another successful event!

Welcome to the 46th running of one of the world’s great ocean races . Transpac brings together a wide range of competitive boats and sailors for an exciting downwind race through strong trade winds, beautiful blue water and tall cumulus clouds . Since the time I raced my first Transpac in 1971, many things have changed and many things have stayed the same . The ocean, of course, is always out there, the same ocean, but also different every time . And when you are halfway, you are further from land than any place else on earth . Ala Wai Harbor and the Ilikai Hotel were relatively new back then, but I remember the Aloha welcome well as a lasting tradition for the race . One thing that has changed is the faster boats have gotten much, much faster . In the early 1980s, Santa Cruz 50s were in Division 1, but these days they are several divisions down . There is room for everyone in Transpac and competition to fit their sailing style . The three photos on the cover of this program further display three very different sailing styles . Better yet, all yachts are eligible for the overall corrected time victory . In the late 1960s, 73-foot industrial strength maxis like Blackfin and Windward Passage were fierce course record contenders and both were winners of the “shortest elapsed time” Barn Door trophy . With a good breeze and lot of work, these boats could sail the course in less than nine and a half days . At the time, a Cal 40 was the best bet for a corrected time victory, and even today, a well-prepared, well-sailed Cal 40 is still in the hunt . Returning to the cover and Neville Crichton’s R/P 100, Alfa Romeo, a 100-footer, sailed the course in 5 days 14 hours to win the Merlin trophy for the shortest elapsed time for boats with power winches and movable ballast . It should also be noted that Alfa was also the first monohull ever to sail the course in less than half of the time of the original record holder, that being the 86-foot schooner Lurline, which 105 years ago, set the original course at 12 days 6 hours . Next on the cover is John Kilroy’s modified TP 52 Samba Pa Ti, which completed the course 7 days 8 hours to blow the doors off the fixed ballast, manual winch Barn Door competition . The crew will tell you that racing to Honolulu on a TP 52 is a bit like racing to Honolulu on a 49er . The third photo is Alejandro Calzada’s S&S 57 Charisma, winner of the Aloha division for traditional cruising yachts . This is the class for those who want to race the boat they have, eat real cooked food, and enjoy a glass of wine with dinner . Transpac is considered by many to be an adventure of a lifetime . With a great mainland sendoff, spectacular racing across the Pacific, and a wonderful Aloha welcome in Honolulu it is a “don’t miss” race on any serious sailor’s resume . Last of all to skippers and crew, I thank you in advance for saying “mahalo” to your hosts while you are having a grand time in Honolulu .

Bill Lee Commodore, Transpacific Yacht Club

HOnOLuLu

On behalf of the 2011 Transpac Honolulu Committee, as well as the Kaneohe, Hawaii and Waikiki yacht clubs, I want to extend an aloha greeting to all participating skippers and crewmembers, along with their families and friends . As usual we have an eager cadre of 600-plus volunteers lined up to support finish line communications, escort vessels, mooring, inspection and various information and other administration needs . We also will continue our long tradition of providing hosts for aloha greetings for every entry . This is a unique and distinguishing feature of our race and I would remind skippers and crewmembers to be generous with their mahalos to their hosts . I encourage participants, families and friends to stop by the Transpac Race Headquarters, affectionately known as “The Shack” to see some new improvements and features designed to let us serve you better . Due to gracious donations by the Transpacific Yacht Club board and several board members, we have been able to make some needed structural and cosmetic improvements as well as equip the Shack with some new technology to help friends and families track their crews’ performance on the race course and ETAs . We must ask for everyone’s cooperation with the mooring arrangements this year . Unfortunately one of our nearby marinas in Keehi Lagoon was heavily damaged by the recent Japanese tsunami so the Ala Wai harbormaster is providing temporary mooring space to approximately 60 refugee yachts . We will be working closely with the Ala Wai harbormaster and the Hawaii and Waikiki yacht clubs to handle both the Transpac finishers and the temporary marina guests . I also want to thank several new sponsors including Tommy Bahama, the new Disney Aulani Resort and Pepsi Cola Hawaii who are contributing product and/or treasure so that we can continue to improve the post-race environment here in Hawaii .

In 1925 an article appeared in a local newspaper to the effect that Kaneohe Yacht Club members had unanimously passed a resolution protesting the action of Honolulu customs officials (sic) for seizing a small quantity of liquor on board the vessel Eloise, a Transpac racing yacht . The skipper of that yacht, Commodore John Piver, subsequently donated a trophy to the KYC, which was known as the “Piver Cup .” The resolution read, “Resolved, that the Kaneohe Yacht Club, in special meeting hereby assembled does protest with all its strength against a continuance of the practice of searching incoming registered yachts which plainly are not engaged in illicit traffic for liquor or any other contraband . . . .” (The History Of Kaneohe Yacht Club, page, 21) Today Transpac yachts must surrender fruits, vegetables and animals . How times have changed! The KYC’s tradition of supporting Transpac began less than a year after the founding of the club in 1924 . We are proud of our long association with the race and we look forward to many more years of successful Transpacs ahead . Once you arrive here in Hawaii, we hope you won’t forget that the island extends well beyond Waikiki . Please join us at KYC here on the lush, green windward side of Oahu . We pride ourselves on being a family club with amenities for the sailor, fisherman and landlubber that include a bar, casual and fine dining opportunities, a swimming pool and a tennis court . Jump on a boat for a ride around the bay on a Thursday Night Happy Hour race or simply enjoy a Mai Tai on the lawn and watch the sun set over the Ko’olau Mountains, but do come to see us! The KYC will also host the traditional racing-ending Plywood Cup fundraiser for United Cerebral Palsy Hawaii on Saturday, July 23 . We hope you will all join in the fun to raise funds for this worthy cause . Mahalo to all the volunteers who make this race successful, it couldn’t be done without you . To all racers, we wish you a safe and fast passage, a sincere KYC Aloha upon arrival, and our heartiest congratulations on your accomplishment . Hana Hou!Lou Ickler, Commodore

The Waikiki Yacht Club offers a friendly aloha to all of the skippers, crew, family, supporters, and volunteers who are involved in Transpac 2011 . We look forward to having you as our guests . The Waikiki Yacht Club is a wonderful place to relax, swim, shower, eat and drink, from morning to night, and for reviving your spirits in our tropical locale . For those who need to stay connected, we have free wireless Internet service . Free coffee with be available 24/7 complements of Hawaiian Paradise Coffee from July 18th to the 24th . We invite everyone to enjoy our wharfside, umbrella-shaded tables, where you can listen to music while enjoying island-style pupus and cold, refreshing drinks . Or you can choose to relax by our pool, while never being far from wait service and locker rooms . As always, our Waikiki Yacht Club shuttle will provide complementary transportation between our club and the rest of the Ala Wai Harbor . Food service at our club is available from 8:00 a .m . until 9:00 p .m . every day . Our dining room is open for lunch Wednesday through Friday 11:30 a .m . to 2:00 p .m . and dinner on Wednesday and Friday from 6:00 p .m . to 9:00 p .m . We also serve an excellent Sunday brunch starting at 10:30 a .m . to 2:00 p .m . The Waikiki Yacht Club will host the famous ‘Mount Gay Rum Party’ with the great red Mount Gay souvenir hats, on Thursday, July 21st . In addition, and new for this year, will be an ‘Aloha After Party’ following the awards ceremony on July 22nd . This will be a unique and special party to recognize everyone who played a part in the 2011 Transpac . We look forward to having a great time and we hope to see all of you there . The Board of Directors, members, and staff of the Waikiki Yacht Club are proud to be a part of the great tradition of Transpac and our congratulations to all of the racers on your downwind ride to paradise .

a decisive Transpac moment can come as early as the first day, if one boat picks a lane and goes off unchallenged—and if that turns out to be the right lane. Or the decisive “moment” can develop over a few days, or many days, in much the same way. In any crossing from the West coast to Hawaii, the navigator’s key decision is where to aim the boat to keep it safely south of the calms of the pacific High pressure Zone. Usually that means bending south and adding extra miles for the sake of better winds. But every year there is always the possibility, however unlikely, that this year is different, that this year is a rhumb line year. If you haven’t got it already, the commitment is called, picking your lane. and switching lanes, as in sailing laterally across the racecourse, is expensive. If you are reading this ahead of Transpac 2011, you can be sure that picking a lane is the hottest topic going between navigators and skippers. The must-win boats (for example, Magnitude 80 or Horizon or Bella Mente) have already recruited their pick of talented, fearless downwind drivers. In the polar opposite, the aloha class, the boats (for example, Dr. paul Edwards’ catalina 42, Wind Dancer, or ross pearlman’s Jeanneau, Between the Sheets) have already rounded up their own, chosen people for their own special, self-defined experience. If you are reading this after the race, picking the lane will still be one of the hottest topics, along with that round-down in the black squall, along with that wonderful (or perhaps gawdawful) meal that Binkie served on the fifth night out, along with whatever ineffable fright or marvel or unspeakably-funny oopsie that will forever jump out for everyone aboard, whenever they meet again, wherever they meet again.

That is the beauty of the game that we play, a tradition since 1906, passed down from generation to generation. passed down as a gift. If you live Transpac, you know this. If you are new, welcome. You’re going to love it. What finer witness could we present than Yoshi Murase, who has been racing Transpac since 2001, and with a bit of a commute to the start line, at that. Murase’s boats, named Bengal, come all the way from Japan, about 5,000 miles, to make the Transpac start. He pined for the adventure for years, he says, and finally did it and keeps coming back because, “We feel genuinely close to the people, and we appreciate the aloha hospitality. We want to be great friends to all. and, we learn from each race. On a chart, the race might look monotonous, but the reality is very different.”Questions of the Hour can Magnitude 80 capture the Barn Door again, now that the classic Barn Door Trophy has been set as a prize for boats with a fixed-keel? With Magnitude now reconfigured to a fixed keel for the sake of the quest? could Bella Mente play the spoiler as she continues her West coast tour? It takes a race to know after setting a doublehanded record in 2009 in an Open 50 with Mark christensen, philippe Kahn chose to “de-turbo” an andrews 68, ex-Equation, now Pegasus, and race fully-crewed in 2011. “We plan to sail her surfing to Honolulu like a Moore 24 as opposed to sailing across the waves, reaching, like a Melges 24,” Kahn said. “I surf and I love surfing, and what we want is to have fair racing with the other boats in the ‘70s’ class using the Transpac Orr rating. We hope to get more people wanting to do this and

have some great pacific Ocean sailing.” De-turboing meant that the mast on Pegasus was shortened by 12 feet, and the keel was shortened, with a smaller bulb and a few thousand pounds of lead added to the bilge. The bowsprit is gone, and the boat’s new short poles, Kahn said, can be gybed easily with a crew of three to five. also in the “70’s” pack are such familiar names as Alchemy, Grand Illusion, Holua, Cheetah, Condor, Pendragon VI, Peligroso and Pyewacket, with Bill Mcclure sailing Pyewacket as a sort of tribute to roy Disney, but with local sailors instead of pros. This group should have great head-to-head competition. Then there is the 69-foot Bella Mente, line honors winner in the 2006 newport-Bermuda race, owned by Hap Fauth of chicago and born “turbo’d.” Fauth’s crew was caught up in a race to the race after breaking the mast en route to cabo last spring, with a new boat in-build and lots to think about. For them, getting across the start line will truly feel like a vacation. Very hot boats in the midsize range include the likes of ricardo Brockman’s Vincitore, Jeffrey Urbina’s CaZan, chip MeGeath’s Criminal Mischief, and the Tp52, Patches. add Lorenzo Berho’s Peligroso to Vincitore along with Jorge ripstein’s Patches and you have a three-boat contingent from Mexico, which puts our neighbors to the south ahead of our neighbors to the north, by one entry. Of those, the Open 60, O Canada, is a standout, skippered by 2009 Melges 24 world champion and 2007 doublehanded Transpac winner richard clarke. completing our 3-2-1 countdown of internationals is perennial competitor and long-distance commuter from Japan, Yoshiko Murase with his Ohashi 46, Bengal 7. and we’d better add Katana to our list of hot midsize boats. “Dr. Laura” schlessinger, who had Tim Kernan design Katana as a Transpac boat, has made a fast ascent through sailing after her sudden, spasmodic conversion from motoryachting. In seven years, schlessinger has gone from profound surprise that she could possibly like sailing to being totally

committed to it. “sailing empties you of the daily junk,” she says, “and that’s the meaning of life, to put amazement into every day.” some of the hottest competition should be found among the six santa cruz 50s. Wayne Zittel, skippering Hula Girl, figures you have the best of all worlds, “any time you come this close to having a one-design fleet. We went against Deception and Horizon racing newport-cabo, and we could see that Horizon is the benchmark. It’s very well prepared, very well sailed. We’ll race Hula Girl with six J/World clients and three coaches. In doing these things, it’s always fun to watch the dramatic learning curve. In a week, the driving gets so much better.” Which may not be unique to a teacher-student entry. Only two boats are sailing doublehanded. alex Mehran and Jesse rowse have Truth, the Open 50 that carried Kahn and christensen to a doublehanded record in 2009, and Greg constable/Doug Backhouse are the “other” canadian entry with the Fast 40, Narrow Escape. One of the verities of long-distance handicap racing is that you race your class, and the weather determines whether a big boat or a small boat wins overall. Often enough, the smaller end of the scale is the place to be, and in 2011, that end of the fleet includes two J/125s, a santa cruz 37, and a Hobie 33. Will a four-day head start see them crossing the Diamond Head finish line alongside the big guys? among the nine entries in the aloha class, Eric Gray’s Gracie has only one race veteran in the crew. plenty of new blood there. also in the aloha group, Traveler returns after using the 2007 race as leg one of a circumnavigation. Michael Lawler’s north Wind 47 visited six continents and covered 31,145 miles, Lawler says: “We crashed the King of Tonga’s coronation, rescued fishermen off naui—they would have died—and eventually crossed the other pond with the atlantic rally for cruisers. But we also spent eight months in the south pacific, because we liked it so much. What I learned is that cruising is the art of fixing your boat in exotic places.” perhaps, this time, Hawaii is exotic enough.

The Transpacific Yacht race, or ‘Transpac” as most sailors call it, vies with the Bermuda race on the U.s. East coast as one of the two most enduring long distance sailing events in the world. However Transpac’s open ocean racecourse that measures some 2,225 nautical miles, far overshadows the Bermuda race that also was first raced in 1906. It should also be noted that Transpac’s historic first contest might have occurred nearly a decade sooner had san Francisco’s pacific Yacht club accepted Hawaii’s King David Kalakaua’s invitation to race to Hawaii for his 50th birthday celebration in 1897. Unfortunately, for reasons unrecorded, his royal offer was never acted upon. still, shortly after Hawaii became a U.s. Territory, Honolulu businessman and yachtsman clarence Macfarlane discussed creating such a race with Los angeles businessman and south coast Yacht club member Harry sinclair. Macfarlane agreed to sail his 48-foot schooner to san Francisco, as much to show other yachtsmen it could be done as to meet them there for the start of a race back to Honolulu. Unfortunately, Macfarlane sailed into san Francisco Bay on May 13, 1906 just 25 days after that city had been devastated by the great earthquake and fire. still, he somehow managed to contact sinclair and they agreed that Macfarlane should sail down to Los angeles where they could organize a race to Honolulu from there. The first Transpac race began off L.a.’s san pedro breakwater at noon on June 11, 1906 between three yachts: Macfarlane’s La Paloma, sinclair’s 86-foot schooner Lurline, and charles Tutt’s 112-foot ketch

Anemone flying the new York Yacht club burgee. Anemone, under an earlier agreed upon handicap system, was the scratch boat and had to give Lurline and La Paloma 12 and 27 hours respectively. Twelve days, nine hours, and 59 minutes after the start, on a passage so fast it was only eclipsed once in the next four decades, Lurline crossed the finish line off Oahu to become Transpac’s first elapsed- and corrected-time winner. Transpac has been raced biennially with few exceptions since 1906, and after 45 contests, it has created its own colorful history. The following are some of its historic highlights:

•Theracewasruneveryeven-numberedyearfrom1906through 1936, except for 10 years during World War I. It then changed to odd-numbered years in 1939 so as to not conflict with the East coast’s Bermuda race.

ROY E. DISNEY In fond memory

One thing to know about roy Disney is that he came to grand prix racing the slow way. First he sailed modest family cruisers, and he was drawn into sailing bit by bit. Then he discovered Transpac. It was the beginning of a love affair that enriched roy’s life and the Transpacific Yacht race as well. The man commissioned custom ocean racers and raced all over the world, with great success. But Transpac? He sailed fifteen Transpacs. He served on the Board of the Transpacific Yacht club and was always about the business of making Transpac better. Transpac was his passion. He said, “I raised four kids on this race.” Shamrock was roy’s first Transpac ride, in 1975, and he loved that boat, but Shamrock was an s&s centerboard yawl and wrong-wrong-wrong for racing downwind in the trades. slip-sliding all the way to the Diamond Head Buoy proved the point. For the next race roy chartered a santa cruz 50. now, instead of fighting the boat down the waves, the crew found themselves fighting each other for the delight of helming a boat that wanted to go straight and fast. roy held onto his dear Shamrock—now she was declared a cruising boat—and along the way there would be four new race boats, each in turn named Pyewacket, after the cat in the Disney movie, Bell, Book and candle. But these were downwind flyers, every one.

Pyewacket II, a santa cruz 70 with son roy pat skippering (roy was nursing a broken leg) in 1997, became the boat that finally beat Merlin’s 20-year-old record, taking the mark down to seven days and change. come 1999, roy was back in the saddle and riding Pyewacket III, an r/p 75 that shaved the record by four more hours for a time of 7 days, 11 hours, 41 minutes. The same boat in 2002 went east and set records in the newport-Bermuda and chicago-Mackinac. an attempt in 2007 to reclaim the Transpac record with a cant-keeled, extended pyewacket IV did not pan out, but this is becoming too much like a list of races and records. Those who knew roy Edward Disney, inevitably referenced in the press as “nephew of Walt,” knew him as dead-set loyal to his crew, who were equally loyal to him. He was generous and gentle, but driven, with a fertile and creative mind. He made his nature movies and championed his animations, he made his Morning Light Transpac movie, and he cared deeply about the Disney heritage. During the heights/depths of his bitter battle to oust Michael Eisner from the helm of the company that roy feared was losing its soul, he told the new York Times, “You want to know what really set me off? It was the word ‘brand.’ Michael Eisner kept talking about Mickey Mouse as a brand. He’s not a brand. He’s a mouse.”

GO TOwARD THE lIGHT Transpac and the ULDBBy Kimball Livingston

In the story of Transpac and the ULDB, it is no coincidence that california lies upwind from Hawaii. However, there is no rational explanation of the santa cruz phenomenon and how, or why, a small town tucked into the sheltered bight of Monterey Bay should experience a boatbuilding spasm that rocks our world to this day.

But it did. Which is not to claim that every critical element bubbled up out of santa cruz. To get our story right, we must begin in southern california, with a man who knew what he wanted in a boat, and it wasn’t anything already on offer. and we must touch base with a man of the islands, who believed it was time for a Honolulu boat to win the Honolulu race, a man prepared to go out on a limb to make that happen. We begin, long before the term Ultra Light Displacement Boat was coined, much less in need of the acronym, ULDB. We begin with George Griffith, Transpacific Yacht club member #1 in 2011 and long before, in the 1960s, the godfather of the cal 40. Bill Lapworth did the naval architecture, yes, but it was George Griffith who sketched the midsection that defined the ride. It was Griffith who insisted upon a fin keel, spade rudder layout and a structure that was radically-light for the day. It was Griffith who guaranteed the builder—purely a gamble—a series run of 10. Then, in their Transpac debut, 1965, cal 40s ran 1-1 and 2-2 and four more cal 40s placed in the overall top 10. In a race already rich with history, a new ethos was born. Transpac celebrates downwind, tradewind sailing, and it was no longer necessary, and certainly no longer cool, to wallow downwind, stuck in the water. sailors began to speak of “surfing” to Hawaii. It was a new day. The cal 40 had its critics in the old guard until, year by year, it proved itself on both coasts as one very good boat. The castle keep had been breached. You might call the cal 40 a ULDB-of-its-day, but Griffith never endorsed the label. In this writing, your author contacted Griffith and a heap of other veterans as to the origin of the term, Ultra Light Displacement Boat, ULDB, and came away with lots of speculation but no answers. certainly the term was in widespread use in the 1970s as a means to identify the new, light boats that were coming, notably, out of santa cruz. Designer alan andrews pointed me to a page in royce’s sailing Illustrated crediting Windward Passage (first to finish, 1969, 1970) as the first big ULDB, with a D/L of 100, and quoting designer Bob perry saying, “If you have to draw the lines I would suggest zero to 110 for ULDBs, 110 to 160 for light displacement boats. The cal 40, considered light in the 1960s, had a 250 D/L ratio.” and here is a little fine-tuning from andrews: “In more modern boats, the sail-carrying power has increased tremendously, so they carry bigger rigs and actually plane in many conditions as opposed to just surfing.” as the sixties wound down, MOra—the Midget Ocean racing association (rIp)—was a hotbed of activity on the northern california coast. Bill Lee credits Don Goring with having the first ultra light in

santa cruz; Goring’s 30-foot Starbuck had been built in south africa. at the same time there was buzz about an inaugural “MOra Transpac” for boats 30 feet and under. The prospect inspired santa cruz surfer /sailor George Olson to build a boat with the goal to go insanely fast downwind. What would become Grendel was born of having, as Olson put it, “a lot of cal 20 stuff lying around.” a bit of research on what we might call a Model T computer convinced Olson that a cal 20 rig would work for a light 24-footer (think 2,000 pounds displacement) so a 24-footer is what he built. The MOra Transpac never happened, but Grendel was a happening in herself. The boat was launched in 1968 and won a MOra season championship and a distance race that finished in Ensenada. Olson had got his numbers right. But the Grendel story was just beginning, because Olson’s friend and fellow in this madness, ron Moore, refused to let Grendel’s male mold go to waste. With the beam stretched to suit the eyeball, the mold produced a second one-off, Summertime, that became the prototype of the Moore 24, something of a legend in itself. and so the stage was set for a fellow named Bill Lee who, ahem, actually had an engineering degree. Lee had arrived in santa cruz in 1968 and soon was at work on a 30-footer that became Magic. rather than use solid glass, Lee chose a cored sandwich for his hulls, for lighter displacement. Magic was launched in 1969. next came the 36-foot Witchcraft for art Biehl, who racked up a string of successes in downwind races to Mexico. and then came stu cowan, a man on a mission “to bring First Overall and the King David Kalakaua cup back to Honolulu.” as cowan relates it, a bit of research led to the discovery of some glowing press accounts of that Witchcraft thingamajig, a product of Bill Lee and his then-partner, Biehl, in Magic Marine Boat Works. along with Honolulu sailmaker Tommy nelson, cowan flew to Witchcraft’s home port of Marina del rey, california “to try her out. Before we even got her out of the harbor, I decided this was the right design.” The right design to bring an overall Transpac win to Honolulu. The result was a commission for Lee to design and build a 35-footer that would become Chutzpah IV. Launched in april, 1973, cowan’s new boat weighed in at 7,000 pounds compared to his previous

Chutzpah 1973 finish. Crew: L to R: Steve Fletcher, Bruce Nelson, Tom Nelson, Stuart Cowan, Jacob Van Heeckeren, Jim Gannon (crouched).

Chutzpah, a 35-foot Herreshoff displacing 18,500 pounds. To crew the race that year, cowan recruited Jake van Heeckeren, a northern california sailmaker who had navigated a 1969 Transpac win on the cal 40, Holiday II, plus nelson and three more people who qualified as among the best helmsmen going. Chutzpah was the smallest and, by a country mile, the cheapest of 58 boats entered in the 1973 race, including 15 in class D. While van Heeckeren (a ph.D in mathematics) worked with Bill Lee to design the rig and sail plan to the IOr-magic number of 27.5018, cowan cheerfully told anyone who would listen that his boat was going to win the ‘73 Transpac. For that, he relates, he was “laughed out of every yacht club from the royal Thames to the royal prince albert.” Even the friendlies at his home club, Waikiki, were not putting their bets on Chutzpah. Obsessively light-loading with a diet of freeze-dried foods, obviously different, the Chutzpah crew stuck out like a sore thumb and drew attention from the rating committee, which a few days before the start bumped the rating to 31+. But that wasn’t enough, if you were in the anti-ULDB camp. Chutzpah crossed in 13 days, 13 hours, 36 minutes, 53 seconds to win on corrected time, class D and overall, by 3:07:55 over a cal 40, Ariana, which finished 2-2. The slender rocketship from new Zealand, Ragtime, now based in southern california, edged out Windward Passage for line honors by a heart-pounding 4 minutes. some f igured such a lightweight flyer as Chutzpah was unsafe for sea, an accusation not supported by the ocean miles that ULDBs have sailed since. Other people, without being anti-ULDB, saw the new boats as a problem of apples and oranges. The rule of the day, IOr, rated a boat according to its performance on all points of sail, but the 2,225-mile official length of the Transpac, in a textbook year, breaks up into a day or so of beating, a few days of close reaching, and then a lot of reaching and running before the trades. no apologies, that’s the attraction. But how to handicap it? as George Griffith recalled many years later, “For several races we went through the tortures of the damned. can you race light boats versus heavy boats and make it mean something? It was a period of frustration. Everybody had an axe to grind.” Meanwhile, Bill Lee declared “Fast is fun” and continued to ignore the IOr rule in favor of the type of boat that he liked. Transpac Yc committees, in their turn, increased the ratings of the very light boats, credited some of the heavier boats, and hoped for the best in ‘75. By way of adjustment, the ratings committee lopped 8:46:52 off Ragtime’s allowance for the 1975 race. Ragtime then placed 7th in class a, 52nd overall while winning her second-in-a-row first-to-

finish Barn Door Trophy by eight hours over Ondine. The rating hit to Chutzpah was roughly four hours, but then, there was that four-day stretch during the race when her mileage was only seven miles short of the mileage of Ondine, at 79 feet more than twice her length. can you race light boats against heavy boats? Chutzpah would repeat as class D and overall time allowance winner, finishing on elapsed time ahead of all the class D boats, all the class c boats, seven B’s and one a. Winning for Honolulu, a second time. Bill Lee designs took seven of 19 trophies, and a consensus began to develop that apples versus oranges was a problem deserving a solution. such as, dividing the fleet into ULDB and not. THE 1977 RACE stands out for many reasons. The pacific High performed like a champ, producing chamber of commerce conditions all the way. The race saw the debut of the first big ultralight from

santa cruz, Merlin—a boat designed to get Bill Lee to Honolulu in time to make every party, it would become part of Transpac lore—with Merlin faced off against Harry Moloshco’s copycat Drifter that was rushed through design and construction barely in time to make the start. and yes, the fleet was split. a formula was drawn up to define a ULDB, and 10 lightweights were assigned to “Division II.” They were the smallest grouping in the race, with a size range of 35 feet to 69 feet. and that, you might believe, was a problem of its own. Drifter led Merlin past the West End of catalina, both of them trailing Kialoa and Windward Passage, then the course record holder off a 1971 crossing of 9:09:06:48. Under the new formula, Passage sailed in the regular division, not ULDB. she would eventually finish ahead

of Kialoa but correct to second to Kialoa’s first in class a. By day four, however, the Passage record was clearly at risk, and the race for line honors was all about Merlin and Drifter. add another four days, and the duel was incredibly tight, with Bill Lee and Harry Moloshco both checking-in to the finish line committee on the evening of day eight. With lots of wind in the Molokai channel. With Merlin closing at the more favorable angle of sail. With tension mounting. Hallelujah, they were arriving at party time. Merlin came first across the Diamond Head finish line just past 9 o’clock in a time of 8:11:1:45. Drifter arrived only 17 minutes later—the crew not knowing whether they were first or not—followed by Ragtime in the early next morning, in the wake of celebrations that ran most of the night. Lee remembers ‘77 as, “a battle between the old and the new. The heavy boats with big rigs versus the light

boats with little rigs. all in the days of amateur crews, real food, Dacron sails, and celestial navigation.” Between Chutzpah’s double wins in ‘73 and ‘75, and Merlin’s Barn Door win in ‘77 that shaved 22 hours off the existing record, ULDBs had come to Transpac to stay. Over the years to come, the emerging new-generation Transpac fleets edged closer to the ULDB range, and by and by the whole sport moved. soon Transpac entered the era of the sleds, production boats from Lee in the form of santa cruz 50s and santa cruz 70s, custom boats from the likes of reichel-pugh and alan andrews that reached speeds in the twenties, under control. They became the new standard even before carbon fiber came along to make the high-end boats lighter yet. The Transpac course record now belongs to neville crichton’s all-carbon cant-keeled 100 footer from new Zealand, Alfa Romeo, which sailed the 2009 race with a rating of -32.997 and finished with an elapsed time of 5 days, 14 hours, 36 minutes, and 20 seconds—but no Barn Door. Instead, the Barn Door was reserved for fixed-keel boats, and fourth-generation Transpac sailor Trisha steele donated the Merlin Trophy for boats in an “Unlimited” division. The inaugural Merlin Trophy went to Alfa Romeo. Think of this as an early-21st century quandary of apples versus oranges. not since 1977 has there been a fleet split by a standard of displacement. Meanwhile, in 2011, an “average” boat looks more like Double Trouble, an off-the-shelf J/125 with a displacement/length ratio of 74, and the Transpacific Yacht club goes out of its way to drum up interest from “traditional, heavy cruising-type yachts” to encourage them to sign up for the aloha class and come on along. Our second century is just beginning to unfold.

Transpac Trivia

Transpac was a great love of Roy E. Disney. So were his Pyewackets. But that left plenty of room for his passion for the crossword puzzle. Roy was a contributor to your 2011 Transpac Crossword Puzzle, and we dedicate it now to his memory, for all that he did for Transpac.

Mir found admirers wherever she sailed. One of them was John scripps who had sailed his 89-foot ketch Novia del Mar in several Transpac and Tahiti races but lost her in a fire off the coast of Mexico. It wasn’t long before he started looking for another boat and heard Mir was for sale. He had raced against her a number of times and in 1973 became her new proud owner. John’s son paul and family now enjoy sailing her out of the san Diego Yacht club. Mir, in russian, means “Highest point of perfection,” and she is now named Miramar, which in spanish means, ”seeing or enjoying the sea. such a wonderful way to treat a lady!

Forty-two years ago, in the 1969 Transpacific Yacht race, the 79-foot ketch Mir, flying the burgee of the royal Vancouver Yacht club, dismasted near the Diamond Head finish line. Members of the press and photographers aboard a nearby powerboat witnessed several knockdowns as the gusting trade winds overpowered her. a short distance from the finish line another heavier gust came down out of the mountain valleys laying Mir almost flat in the water and the spinnaker collapsed. The helmsman steered her off the wind and when the sails filled the rig collapsed! The plucky crew quickly cut away the rigging and mast and sailed her over the finish line stern first with a spinnaker flying from the mizzenmast. It was like a shot heard around the world when the pictures and story hit the press. FotoBoat photographer richard cleveland took a sequence of shots in color, as did Lois Kennedy of sEa Magazine in black and white. To this day the shots of the Mir dismasting are found in many homes and yacht clubs. Her resourceful owner, George O’Brian, after finding that getting a new mast would take months, had a telephone pole stepped in the vessel for the sail back to the coast. Over time, Mir has enjoyed quite a life. Designed by Jarl Lindblom, her keel was laid at the aBO Batfarv yard in abo, Finland in 1943, launched in 1949, and finished at the plym yard in stockholm sweden in 1950. Her first owner Wilhelm Hedensjo sold her in 1953 to Harry Greb and she found herself being sailed from sweden across to canada where she enjoyed sailing out of the royal canadian Yacht club on the Great Lakes. Illness caused Harry Greb to sell her and she was sailed to puerto rico where she lay idle and in need of attention. Mir later found her way back to Toronto and was sold to George O’Brian who sailed her out of the royal Vancouver Yacht club in the swiftsure races and to Mexico and finally to Hawaii in the 1969 Transpac.

HOW THE WORLD LEARNED OF THE YACHT MIR’S DRAMATIC TRANSPAC FINISHBy Bobbie Jennings

In 1969, my first year with the Transpacific Yacht race, I was the assistant to communications chair Ernie Ernshaw (a KGMB anchor), who served as both the fleet and media contact. We used HaM radio in those days to talk with the fleet and the escort vessel, and a landline phone to reach the press. Our “press room” was on his boat, near Transpac row. Usually he’d head up to the Hawaii Yacht club for a “quick one” around 2:00 p.m. and often not return, leaving me to receive messages via HaM and pass out press releases on the phone. On the afternoon of Mir’s scheduled arrival, Ernie had already departed for the club. suddenly, from the ship-to-shore radio came a voice that said, “Ernie, this is hot news. Listen to this...” and the voice proceeded to tell me the yacht Mir had had a bad knockdown and with just a few hundred yards to go to the finish line, had broken its mast, and the crew had rigged the mizzen and was coming across the line backward. This report was from a helicopter flying above the finish line and the speaker was Bud Thompson. With no knowledge about radio protocol, I simply - without call letters - thanked the helicopter and turned to the HaM set to tell the Escort Vessel and Tp Officials. again, without any call letters, I repeated what I had heard. “Get that lady off the horn” someone shouted. I explained who I was, but they still insisted I was crazy and had my facts wrong. so I called the helicopter back (again, no call letters; just “Bobbie to helicopter”) and asked them to repeat what they had said. again they repeated the same story. so back I went to the HaM set and passed along the information once again, and once again was told to put Ernie on the horn with some reasonable explanation. I replied that Ernie was “indisposed” and I was in charge, but after a few more back-and-forth conversations I said to heck with them and began preparing a press release for the media. The Transpac officials finally learned I was correct in my reporting, and thanks to a photographer from california, the photo of Mir taking the knockdown was captured for magazine covers, as well as the huge framed enlargement on the wall of the Waikiki Yacht club. Ernie, incidentally, received over a dozen “unlicensed-user citations” from the Fcc! (End note: Ernie passed away later that year and I became the media-dubbed “Voice of Transpac”. I haven’t missed broadcasting a Transpac on local radio in 40 years.)
