In this quote, Dede is seen as a tree that refuses to die. She consistently “plucks” herself of things that may deter of her goal of educating everyone about the heroic sacrifices of her sisters.

The quote from the story shows that although many do not hear of her story, the survivor, she has committed her life to ensuring that all Dominicans know the story of the sacrifices made by her sisters.
