fluke 805 vibration meter

The Fluke 805 is not a vibration pen; it’s a meter. Even better, it’s a Fluke meter. A Fluke meter that eliminates the confusion of vibration screening and provides reliable measurements customers can trust to make critical go or no-go maintenance decisions.

Most vibration pens and other screening devices currently on the market provide an overall number for vibration condition and some also provide an overall number for bearing con-dition. Due to pain points caused by inadequate design and measurement technology, customers consider the products to be unreliable, difficult to understand and are generally viewed as a hassle. Some experts and customers even refer to them as toys. Until the new Fluke 805 Vibration Meter, that is.

The Fluke 805 is far superior to its competitors on very front including feature set, form factor and brand promise. It provides quantifiable results of bearing condition, overall vibration and temperature, assesses condition severity using text-based alerts, and exports and trends data using built-in templates. Our customers told us what was wrong with the other vibration screening pens and devices. We listened, and the Fluke 805 Vibration Meter is our answer. We made a more accurate, more user friendly tool to improve day-to-day machine checks, so customers can keep their facilities and plants up and running. See below for direct quotes from our customers about their pain points with competing products, and the Fluke 805 solutions to those problems.

The Problem with vibration pens The SoluTion The fluke 805

unreliable “Vibration pens are fine for what they are. We check whether the machine exceeds the alarm level or not. But that is pretty much it. It does not provide us a clear picture of machine condition. They do not provide enough data to provide good value to a ‘true’ reliability program.”

reliableA meter—not a pen—that measures overall vibration as well as specific variables like bearing condition and temperature to provide a more complete picture.

inconSiSTenT“The pens only work well when applied exactly correctly and they’ve caused a lot of false alarms mostly because of technician error. I want a measurement I know will be consistently reliable, no matter which of my guys is taking it.”

rePeaTableA combination vibration and force sensor tip that compensates for user variance (force or angle) yielding accurate, repeatable readings.

manual“The data from the pen needs to fit into our existing operator rounds tracking program, which means I need to be able to upload it to Excel—easily.”

auTomaTedData management capabilities for matching existing equipment IDs and exporting data to Microsoft® Excel for trending over time.

confuSing“I don’t understand what the numbers mean. What indicates a problem?”

STraighT-forwardA four-level severity scale for both overall vibration and bearing condition using textual alerts (Good, Satisfactory, Unsatisfactory, Unacceptable).

difficulT“They’re a pain to use—I have to input a lot of data—not just RPM range and type of equipment but shaft diameter and actual RPM.”

eaSy One tool with sensor sensitivity to a wide range of frequencies (overall vibration 10 Hz to 1,000 Hz, bearing condition 4,000 Hz to 20,000 Hz) covering most machine and compo-nent types, and a straight-forward user interface that minimizes the user inputs to RPM range and equipment type.

Target audiencePrimary target audience: Frontline mechanical troubleshooting teams and machine operators of high-end process facilities that are implementing predictive maintenance practices (petrochemical, pulp and paper, primary metals, utilities, food product, etc.)Product usage:• Scheduled machine condition checks• Tracking long term overall machine health

Secondary target audience: Contractors and consultants providing vibration or mechanical maintenance and analysis servicesProduct usage:• Quick checks on-site to understand client machine condition• Recommend to clients for in-between visits

Selling to the 805 customer

Product elevator pitchA reliable and seamless operation is the key to any successful manufacturing facility. Unexpected machine failures derail production and can result in expensive repair costs and lost revenue opportunities. To prevent unplanned downtime and repairs, maintenance teams need the ability to spot and solve problems before they become bigger problems. The best way to do this is through daily checks of machine condition and the best tool for the task is the Fluke 805 Vibration Meter.

The Fluke 805 is the most reliable and intuitive way to check bearings and overall vibration. The foolproof sensor design helps to mini-mize measurement variations caused by device angle or contact pressure, ensuring you always get an accurate reading. The four-level sever-ity scale quickly assesses condition severity and reports problems using words, not numbers or colors. And data is exportable via USB and can be trended using built-in Mircosoft® Excel templates.

In short, the Fluke 805 Vibration Meter eliminates the confusion of vibration screening and provides reliable measurements you can trust to make critical go or no-go maintenance decisions with confidence.

Questions you may encounter

Question: Why types of machines can I use the 805 on?Answer: Any rotating equipment with roller element bearings. If you would like to obtain severity assessments you can test the following equipment: Chillers, fans, cooling tower drives, centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, air compres-sors, blowers, generic gearboxes (rolling element bearings) and machine tools.

Question: Can I export and trend data captured by the 805?Answer: Yes, with the 805 you can easily export data through a USB connection, trend the readings with built-in Microsoft® Excel templates and plots graphs, and compare the overall vibration readings to ISO Standards (10816-1, 10816-3, 10816-7).

Question: What is Crest Factor+?Answer: Crest Factor+ is a new algorithm that takes the confusion out of bearing assessment. The original Crest Factor algorithm is used by vibration analysts to identify bearing faults. It is defined as the ratio of the peak value/RMS value of a time domain vibration signal.

A key limitation of the original Crest Factor algorithm is that it does not increase linearly as the bearing degrades, making it very difficult to determine the severity of mechanical issues. In fact, the Crest Factor can actually decrease as a bearing nears catastrophic failure due to large RMS values.

In order to overcome this limitation, Fluke uses a propri- etary algorithm known as Crest Factor+ (CF+). CF+ values range from 1 to 16. As the bearing condition worsens, the CF+ value increases, ensuring the user is easily able to recognize the severity of the problem. To make things even simpler, Fluke has also included a four-level severity scale that identifies the bearing health as Good, Satisfactory, Unsatisfactory or Unacceptable.
