The Flinders University of South Australia was established by state legislation in 1966, and was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, on 25 March 1966.
The University is situated on an attractive sloping site of 165 hectares at Bedford _Park, I I kilometres south of the city centre. The site affords extensive views towards the central business district and St Vincent Gulf.
The University commenced operation in 1966 with just over 400 students and approximately 90 academic staff. At that time, the academic work of the University was organised in four Schools - Language and Literature, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences.
On I January 1991, as part of restructuring of higher education in South Australia, Flinders University merged with the Sturt Campus of the former South Australian College of Advanced Education.
The University now has over I 1,300 students, over 70 I academic staff and around 858 general staff, with total annual funds of some $145m.
Early in 1992 the University was organised into the following four Faculties:
• Education, Humanities, Law and Theology
• Health Sciences .

Each Faculty is governed by a Faculty Board, chaired by an elected Head of Faculty, and comprising representatives of the academic and general staff, and students.
A wide range of qualifications is offered through the Faculties, including bachelors degrees, honours degrees, graduate certificates, associate, advanced and postgraduate diplomas, masters degrees (research and coursework), PhDs and higher doctorates.
The University has a diverse and lively student population. Just over 63% of students are' women, around 37% of students study on a part-time basis and the University has approximately 673 external students. There are approximately 550, overseas students undertaking courses and, in· addition, there is a rich diversity of ethnic and language backgrounds in the student population.
Staff of the University have established an enviable record for research. Income from external granting bodies is approximately $25m, and the University has one of the best records of any Australian university in attracting external research funding on a per capita basis.
